The ISC BULLETIN Organized to help provide Central Illinois youth the best sports programs in the country!
Proudly serving our community since 1945.
23rd Annual Smoker set for Oct. 17 Wardle, Underwood set to appear at annual event
The Independent Sports Club of Central Illinois will host its 23rd annual Smoker on
Wednesday, October 17. This year’s event will once again be held at the The
Warehouse on State, a great banquet and event space in the Warehouse District of
downtown Peoria.
Hungry for college basketball insight? The sold-out crowd of more than 300
college basketball fans never leave disappointed. Or hungry. This is also a big
night for the ISC garnering new membership by those in attendance.
Following tradition, this year’s featured guests are Bradley men’s basketball coach
Brian Wardle and Illinois men’s coach Brad Underwood. Journal Star sportswriter
Dave Reynolds and former JS sports editor Kirk Wessler are again expected to
handle the Q&A portion of the evening.
Planning for the Smoker is six months in the making. Among the tasks
undertaken by organizers include scheduling the venue, the coaches, the
emcees, the caterers, securing sponsors, design/production of schedule magnets
as well as event ticket allocation and distribution.
The Warehouse on State is connected to Thyme Kitchen and Craft Bar at 736 SW
Washington. They will handle the catering this year, with beverages provided by
Baumgarten Distributing. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the program scheduled to
start at 7 p.m.
The annual fundraiser will feature various drawings and raffles, including our $50
cash raffle - top prize of $1,500 – and a pair of Bradley men’s basketball upper bowl
season tickets. To be added to the wait list for 2018, contact Jeff Doeden at (309)
453-3633 or Bill King (309) 369-5128.
Stay up-to-date with the ISC.

youth sports organizations periodically need to make
permanent improvements to their facilities.

buildings, etc. The application process includes a committee
review of each organization.

tive year, the ISC

Turkey Raffle Tickets…Get ‘em in!! Halfway Club winners drawn
Eat Steak!
Delicious “gobblers” just before Thanksgiving!
Enclosed with this newsletter are three $5.00 tickets for the Annual
Congratulations to the eight lucky Halfway Club winners for
taking the time to purchase a raffle ticket, which allows the ISC
to support youth sports. This year’s raffle was drawn
at the August board meeting.
The winners were Jim Spears (January),
Fall Turkey Raffle. Ten winners will
be drawn at the November Steak Fry. This traditional long-term raffle has been very
successful in generating funds that allow ISC to support youth sports in the tri-county area. As you read this, 10 fine turkeys are “giving it their all” to make this ISC raffle a big success!!! So do your part by sending your ticket stubs and $15.00 back in the enclosed envelope. Make sure you put your phone number on the ticket so we can notify you if you’re not planning on attending the Steak Fry. Tickets can also be purchased at the Smoker and the Steak Fry.
Mike Molchin (February), Robert Doyle (March),
Joe Stieglitz (April), Thomas Duncan
(May), Ken Lynch (June), Don King
(July), and Joe Basso (August). We do
thank all for supporting our raffle.
Each year we mail all different sets of raffle
tickets to the membership in the quarterly
newsletters, which totals about 10,000 mailed
tickets. From this process, we receive approximately 250-300
entries, and with supplemental sales at the golf outing, usually
generate between $1,500 to $1,700 in revenue. Deducting the
expense of the tickets and prize itself, the proceeds are just one
of the many ways we can provide financial aid grants to youth
sports organizations in central Illinois.
But we would really like to improve on the 10% return rate we
have on these raffles. This newsletter contains two sets of raffle
tickets – Bradley men’s basketball upper bowl season tickets
and free turkeys. If everyone would mail back just one from
each set, we would raise nearly $8,000.
Support youth sports and participate in these raffles. Just like the
Lottery, you can’t win if you don’t play.

Call out to unpaid members For the last three years we have had approximately 250
people listed on our membership roster who have not paid
their $20.00 annual dues. The unpaid remain on the list
because they had previously been paid members. They have
not been removed because the ISC does not want to give up
on the chance that they might remit the $20.00 annual
membership cost when they receive the new dues letter in
January. Each one of these unpaid former members is on our
mailing list and continues to receive our newsletters. We are
reaching out to you in hopes you will consider renewing your
$20.00 membership and help us provide Central Illinois
youth with the best sports program in the country. When
