June Church Calendar

When is the last time you enjoyed

genuine rest and relaxation? There’s no

disputing the importance of rest.

Numerous articles have been written and

posted online regarding the essential

nature of sleep and rest for good health.

If my memory is correct, one or two of

those articles may have been shared by

our parish nurse in the pages of this

newsletter. Rest is good for the mind,

the heart, the immune system and our

general well-being.

When God created the world, he built a

day of rest into the week. The laws given

to the Old Testament Israelite on Mt.

Sinai turned the rest day (Sabbath = rest)

into a requirement. God’s faithful people

used that break from everyday work to

rest physically, but also to focus on the

God who provided them with spiritual rest

and rescue. At the time of Jesus,

believers were gathering regularly in

synagogues (churches) on the day of rest

to hear God’s Word and pray together.

Summertime is often considered to be a

time of rest and relaxation in our culture.

The inviting weather outside beckons us

to enjoy the outdoors, relax on a patio,

take a walk in God’s creation or find a

lake or pool for a refreshing swim. All

these experiences and more can be

great for recharging our physical

batteries. However, we often cause

ourselves no end of stress trying to

pursue the perfect vacation. We try to

squeeze the maximum amount of

experiences into a limited amount of

vacation time. We chase after the

perfect photos to post on social media to

prove to the world that we really are

having a good time.

(On a side note, an increasing number of

people are falling to their deaths in the

attempt to take “selfies” in dangerously

high spots with steep drop offs.)

Sometimes we return from our vacations

and observe that we “need a rest from

the rest.”

Finding physical rest is important, but

rest without Jesus is only an illusion.

Without the forgiving love of Jesus there

is no true peace. Our guilty consciences

and sin-burdened hearts travel with us to

places like Disney World, the National

Parks or that lake up north. The Devil

wants us to ignore our spiritual

shortcomings. He delights when we use

the beauties of God’s creation or the

wonders of human ingenuity to mask the

realities of our failures to honor God and

love our neighbor. That kind of “rest”

from the burdens of life will end poorly for

all who find their peace without Jesus.

Only Jesus can give us true peace and

rest. His cross and empty tomb assure

us that our sins are forgiven. Baptism

proclaims that we are God’s children,

now and forever. Holy Communion gives

us a foretaste of the fellowship we will

enjoy in heaven. Jesus wants to give us

what we truly need. He knows the

importance of genuine rest. That’s why

he invites us: “Come to me, all you who

are weary and burdened, and I will give

you rest. Take my yoke upon you and

learn from me, for I am gentle and

humble in heart, and you will find rest for

your souls.” (Matthew 11: 28, 29)

God grant you the rest you need this

summer. My prayer is that your summer

rest includes regular worship of Jesus,

the true Giver of rest.

Membership Report (Pastor Woldt)

No incoming or outgoing membership changes this month.

Pastors’ Report (Pastor Woldt) Prof. Earle Treptow of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary has agreed to preach at our

mission festival in August. Prof. Treptow will serve as president of the seminary beginning this summer. District

Conference will be held June 11 and 12 at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. All of our pastors and teachers attend

this conference. No lay delegate is needed. Held door offering for ministerial education students and are very thank-

ful for the generous gifts. A member offered to fill the gap so all students can get $1,000 match from Martin Luther

College.

Buildings and Grounds (Glenn Miller) - Thanks to all involved for a successful Arbor Day! Lighting on campus will

be updated and gymnasium lights ordered. Costs will come out of Building and Improvement Fund. Signage will

occur during next meeting, weather permitting.

Board of Education (Jason Walz) 4K Program- For the next school year, the 4K program has the potential to be

larger than normal. A contributing factor to the larger size is that Mrs. Bintz will be having six students repeat 4K. As

a result, we are at 16 students already. Because we have 6 students repeating 4K, the Kindergarten class will be

another small class, six students. Accreditation work is moving forward by the various committees as they review the

various standards. We should still be on track to complete the review before the end of the school year. Our site

visit has been scheduled for October 14-16 with a “meet and greet” dinner scheduled for the evening of October 13.

In consultation with the teachers in grades 3-8, Mr. Gustafson created new classroom schedules to adjust for

different class sizes and needs of the students.

Board of Elders (Dan Bolha) The Elders reviewed the Called Worker Care Committee report. Items/issues that

needed follow-up were forwarded to the respective boards/individuals that may assist in completing/resolving them.

It was decided that the Thursday night service scheduled for 6:30 PM on July 4th of this year will not be held. Three

new donated Cocktail style tables will be placed in the Gathering Space for use before and after services. Pastors

will invite the congregation at the end of services to introduce themselves and welcome someone that is visiting or

unknown to us as we wait to be ushered out of the pews.

Evangelism Committee (Andrew Loescher) Ramping up for Morning Bible Camp.

New Business Randy Matter has been appointed to serve as Congregational Liaison for Equipping Christian

Witnesses Campaign for Martin Luther College.

Treasurer’s Report (Joshua Boeldt)

PARISH NURSE NEWS

HIPAA and David’s Star!

Every once in a while it’s a good

idea to review the Health

Insurance Portability and

Accountability Act and how that

relates to us as a congregation.

The act became law in 1996 and

still has a wide reaching affect.

Prior to the law, pastors could

arrive at the hospital and ask for a

list of his members that were

currently in the hospital from a

directory that the facility kept with

church affiliation information.

Now, facilities may still maintain a

directory but information, such as

member names and room

numbers, will only be given out if

the pastor asks for the person’s

room number by name and only if

the patient has given permission

to be listed in the directory. If you

wish to be visited by your

pastor, the best way to ensure

that, is for the patient or family

member (in case of emergency)

to call the church office with

your name and room number

and give permission to be in the

facility directory. Please call the

church office!

Prayer Requests

During Worship

Our pastors are happy to include

your concerns in the prayers

during church but will only do so

with your specific request. The

prayers will be in general terms

only, unless specifically indicated

by the patient or family, in case of

emergency. The pastors, parish

nurse and office staff will share

information with each other on a

“need to know” basis to provide a

Christ-centered health ministry. If

you have any questions about this

please, don’t hesitate to ask one of

the pastors or parish nurse.

Parish Nurse & Confidentiality

Parish nurses, as member of a

health care profession, are advised

to maintain the usual standards of

professional confidentiality unless

otherwise required by law, avoid

policies that conflict with HIPAA,

be sensitive to the needs of the

parishioner, and continue to work

in team ministry with the pastors

and others to serve our

parishioners and others in the

name of the healing Christ.

8

May, 2019

Since the beginning of 2019, I have been making

monthly trips to our clinic at Mwembezhi, Zambia.

That’s a bit unusual for the Malawi administrator, but so

are the circumstances. Following a field trip to Zambia

in the summer of 2018, and in consultation with the

Zambian Mission, CAMMC made the decision to hire a

Zambian National as Clinic Administrator. In late

December 2018, Pastor Dan Sargent who had

somehow managed to include Clinic Administrator

among all his other duties left Zambia to take a Call

back in the United States. With Dan’s departure, so

went a lot of institutional memory, and the person who

would likely train and mentor our new administrator.

Hence my trips to Zambia.

The change in administration has not affected patient

care. The medical side of clinic operations has been

managed very successfully for years by Mr. Jackson

Kalekwa. Jackson is a Lutheran Church of Central

Africa (LCCA) member who is something of a local icon

and as Clinical Officer-in-Charge has led the effort to

provide high quality Christian based health care to the

villages served by the clinic. The clinic was given a

certificate of excellence for its quality assurance

program in health care delivery by the Zambian

Ministry of Health.

In January 2019, Mr. Alisad Banda was appointed to

be our Clinic Administrator. Alisad is a mature Christian

and longtime LCCA member who is married with two

children. Until joining CAMM, Alisad worked for the

LCCA Board of Charities, managing their home-based

health care programs. He is very familiar with the

operations at Mwembezhi as he has been involved in

various issues related to the clinic. He is currently in

the process of completing his degree in Public Health.

Alisad’s background, experience and qualifications

make him a natural fit for the position. Add in a

Christian heart and mind, a character that believes in

hard work, someone who is respectful of the past but

looks for improvement, a desire to learn, a belief in

team building and inclusiveness, plus a great sense of

humor and you can see that hiring Alisda Banda as our

Administrator was an easy decision. Alisad clearly

understands that his role as administrator in Zambia is

to provide Christian leadership and to ensure that the

medical staff at Mwembezhi have the resources and

support they need.

As Alisad goes through the orientation process, he is

gradually learning the job duties such as reporting,

accounting, ordering and delivering supplies, petty

cash management, payroll, vehicle and property

maintenance, insurance, staff discipline and human

resources, licensing, government and institutional

relations etc. Alisad is a quick learner and is doing well

in his new role. We are blessed and thankful to have

him as part of our team.

We have also created a Zambian Lutheran Medical

Council. The purpose of the council is to provide

guidance and support to the clinic – but not to run it,

and to serve as an information conduit to the LCCA

and the Zambia Mission. As an example, budgets,

changes in pay and clinic conditions are presented to

the medical council for their input and advice but are

ultimately approved by CAMMC. The Council is

comprised of five members: Our Mission Liaison

(chair), the Chairman of the LCCA – Zambia, the

Chairman of the LCCA-Zambia Board of Charities, the

Director of African Mission Operations, and the Malawi

Lutheran Mobile Clinic Administrator. Having our

African brothers on the team provides a unique

perspective when dealing with African issues. The

group has only met once, but we are already seeing

positive results as we are making progress in dealing

with longstanding clinic land and housing issues.

One of CAMM’s long term goals is to turn more of the

responsibility for running the clinics over to Zambian

and Malawi nationals. This is a big step in that

direction. We ask that you please pray for God’s

blessings for the future of the medical mission in Africa,

for Alisad and his family and for the Zambian Lutheran

Medical Council.
