Conclusions were drawn from:

- Interviews with study participants

Five hundred low-income Chicago youngsters, most of whom did not attend preschool.

Researchers found the most enduring effects were due to:

Exposure to as little as one or two years of pre-school, and intensive early hold hood experiences

accounted for an increase of:

- Motivation

- Intellectual skills

- Social adjustments

Nine thousand dollars is the estimated cost per child for eighteen months of pre-school.

Researchers’ cost-benefit analysis suggests these figure leads to ninety thousand dollars worth of

benefits per child, in terms of:

- Increased earnings less criminal behavior reduced mental health costs.

Among the study results:

Eighty percent of the pre-school group finished high school against seventy-five percent of the others

finished high school.

Additional research offered by the Digest of Educational Statistics show:

- 2 yrs. old in learning car centers demonstrated: greater cognitive skills than children in exclusive

care of parents.

- 4 yrs. old in center-based care were more inclined to develop: early reading scales, expressive

vocabulary, mathematics scales, color knowledge and fine motor skills than those cared for

exclusively by their parents, baby sitters and other care arrangements.
