The Environment

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The academic course completion rates at Southwest Tech lagged technical course completion rates by 10% in both face2face and online formats. And…. The overall completion rate for courses delivered online at Southwest Tech was 10% lower than the highest ranking college. 75% vs 85% We needed to do something. So we studied the problem and here’s what we learned: Exercise – paper plates on the head You felt lost, unsure where to go from your starting point. That’s an online student – they don’t have a physical place to go to. They have a web based environment, people on the phone and email. It’s a maze without a map. Online Navigator provides the map and a guide person.

Students' log in activity and grades were checked at the beginning of the semester, at 4, 8, 7, 12 and 15 weeks. At each checkpoint, there were additional students identified who were struggling, and this chart shows those additional students and their progress through the semester. 199 students struggled throughout the semester (30%). Those who struggled received communication with intervention and resource options. 75 (11%) were still struggling at the end of the semester; however, the end results equal in 62% passing the semester.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
put these students top of mind for campus. Find ways to include them – research, copy ideas Example for knowing when to send which resources: student is not submitting work but they have spent a lot of time in the course. They may need calendar tips to know what is due, when, LMS navigation tips. A student is submitting assignments but receiving poor grades – refer them to the academic tutors. A student is doing nothing – refer them to the advisor for a drop. Problem solve and find resolutions for the students
