● X (1887-1923) was a Bengali humorous poet, storywriter and playwright who mainly wrote for children. ‘Aboltabol’ was one of his most famous works. X is the father of Y, who has directed 36 films, won 32 Indian National Film awards and a Bharat Ratna in 1992. He was awarded an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement by Audrey Hepburn in 1992. One of X’s much-loved poems is “The ‘Z’ Cow”. Z is an English word, derived from a Hindi/Urdu root, meaning “foreigner” and which was used as a term of endearment for British soldiers posted in colonial India.

Triangulation means simply ‘triangle-ing’, or conceiving three mutually visible reference points, usually on prominent hills or buildings, as the corners of a triangle. Knowing the exact distance between two of these points, and then measuring at each the angles made by their connecting sight-line with those to the third point, the distance and position of the third point can be established by trigonometry. One of the newly determined sides of this triangle then becomes the base for a second triangle embracing a new reference point whose position is determined in the same way. Another triangle is thus completed and one of its sides becomes the base for a third, and so on. ● Only two educational institutions have been awarded Royal British Battle Honours. One is McGill University in Canada which got them for contributions during World War I. The other is located in India and the honours were awarded for contributions during the Mutiny Of 1857. The school was granted the right, on ceremonial occasions, to carry a British Army regimental-style 'colour' or flag bearing its own coat of arms with a picture of the Residency and the words "Defence of Y, 1857". The flag has not been displayed publicly since 1947 as the subject caused some ambivalence. Satish Bhatnagar, author of Bright Renown: X Y comments: "I once asked the principal why the school is hiding the honour. He said he didn't know how the Indian government would take it."

● The company X was founded in 1971 and was one of the very few private industries given permissions which was largely due to the managing director’s “close” relations to PM Indira Gandhi. ● During ‘Operation Vijay’, on 20 June 1999, X, Commander Delta Company was tasked to attack Point 5140. X with his company skirted around the feature from the East and maintaining surprise reached within assaulting distance of the enemy. X reorganised his column and motivated his men to physically assault the enemy positions. Leading from the front, he in a daredevil assault, pounced on the enemy and killed four of them in a hand-to hand fight. On 7 July 1999, in another operation in the area Pt 4875, his company was tasked to clear a narrow feature with sharp cuttings on either side and heavily fortified enemy defences that covered the only approach to it. For speedy operation, X assaulted the enemy position along a narrow ridge and engaged the enemy in a fierce hand –to-hand fight and killed five enemy soldiers at point blank range. Despite sustaining grave injuries, he crawled towards the enemy and hurled grenades clearing the position with utter disregard to his personal safety, leading from the front, he rallied his men and pressed on the attack and achieved a near impossible military task in the face of heavy enemy fire. The officer, however, succumbed to his injuries. Inspired by his daredevil act, his troops fell upon the enemy with vengeance, annihilated them and captured Point 4875.

● He was often called as ‘'Sher Shah'’ in the intercepted messages of the Pakistan army. In the movie LOC Kargil his role was portrayed by Abhishek Bachchan.

● This family was settled in the small town of Kintoor, just outside Lucknow, the capital of Awadh.

● X’s paternal grandfather, Seyyed Ahmad Musavi Hindi, was born in Kintoor. He left Lucknow in 1830 on a pilgrimage to the tomb of Imam Ali in Najaf, Mesopotamia (now Iraq) and never returned.

● In 1834 Seyyed Ahmad Musavi Hindi visited Persia, and in 1839 he settled in Khomein.

● He continued to be known as Hindi, indicating his stay in India, and X even used Hindi as a pen name in some of his ghazals.

This lip-smacking, crunchy dish from Bihar consists of Litti (wheat balls stuffed with Pitthi – roasted and spiced gram flour) and Chokha (char-grilled aubergines or mashed potatoes). It tastes delicious with pure desi ghee on the side.

Awan Bangwi is an ethnic Tripuri cake made from guria rice, onion, ginger, cashew-nuts, raisins, ghee, pork pieces and lard and garnished with various herbs. The cake is wrapped in a special leaf called ‘Lairu’.
