A New Chamber DrivenCommunity Development ProgramFor Southern Saratoga County

The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County is embarking on a new project in2013 called the Community Development Program. It’s volunteerism with an economicdevelopment purpose, bringing together the best and brightest in the business worldalong with education leaders, students from grade school through college, communityleaders, elected officials, local residents and civic-minded people.

The program prototype took place at Historic Lock 19 in Vischer Ferry during thepast year. Students from Shenendehowa High School worked alongside engineers fromGE, Momentive and Turner Construction to design a bridge structure that allows accessto the entire lock for the first time in nearly a century, with materials supplied by CurtisLumber. Small businesses and neighborhood volunteers came down to lend a hand. Many valuable lessons were learned during this effort which will be applied in 2013.

During the coming year, the Chamber will help facilitate repairs and historicalresearch at the Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa along with the Ballston Spa CentralSchool District, and in Mechanicville at the historic train station, in support of effortsalready underway by city leadership and the Mechanicville Chamber of Commerce. In Waterford and Charlton, business meetings will help develop the agenda for thenext round of community development projects in 2014.

These exciting developments are quite different from the mostly-networking roleof the traditional chamber of commerce. By working together on community projectsof mutual interests, participants can learn much about each other that might not bepossible in a traditional networking setting. Not only may relationships be madestronger, but creative ideas for building a better future for our hometowns will beencouraged in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

To volunteer for the Community Development Program, please call theChamber of Southern Saratoga County at 518-371-7748 or send an email [email protected] .

Start the New Year with an organizedoffice whether in your home or at work.A clean, efficient space helps your atti-tude, outlook, and time management, making you more productive! Our workenvironment affects us in many ways, let’s make it a positive effect.

If possible, empty your space, clean itthoroughly…carpets, walls, all surfaces.Maybe try a new paint color on the walls.Chalkboard or magnetic chalkboard paintmakes a great accent wall, or even justpaint a square of it on one wall and hanga fancy frame around it. Protect the floorswith a mat under the desk chair. A vinylmat will protect hardwood and carpetedfloors. Make sure your desk chair iscomfortable and supports your back.

Take a look at your lighting, do youhave task and overhead lighting? Are allthe bulbs the right wattage and are all

bulbs are working? Do you have theproper window coverings for light controlon windows? There are products on themarket specially made to control glarecoming through windows that are greatfor offices. Your designer can show youthe options.

Take a look at your desk, is it theright size for both the space and the taskyou need to perform on it? You need theproper tools to do the proper job.

Take inventory of your files andequipment., store anything you don’t useon a regular basis or that is more than ayear old in another location. Add or sub-tract a file cabinet if needed. Discard anyold cords, use cord management systemsfor home office suppliers to label cordsand keep them tidy. Tie up any extralength on the cords, it will make it easierto clean around and look much neater.

Completely clear off the bookcases.Donate any books that you don’t needanymore. Add some decorative acces-sories, maybe a nice looking set of book-ends and a decorative box that serves dualfunction as a business card holder. Addbaskets to hold copy paper. Photos shouldhave coordinating frames and keep themto a minimum at work. Make your book-shelves attractive as well as functional.Maybe paint or wallpaper the back wallof the shelves. Group like items together. All your copy center items like the staples, paper clips, ink all on the same shelf.Have fun with the color of these utilitar-ian items, it will make you smile.
