THE IDEA OF EUROPEAn Essay

GEORGE STEINER

GEORGE STEINER is an essayist, writer, critic, and cultural philosopher. After fleeing the increasing anti-Semitic violence in Europe, he spent a large part of his youth in the United States. He studied at Harvard and Oxford. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, and he is the author of many books, including In Bluebeard’s Castle, Language and Silence, After Babel, and The Poetry of Thought.

In this remarkable short book, the foremost intellec-tual of our age brings a lifetime of erudition to bear on a subject that he has grappled with for decades, and whose future is profoundly uncertain.

The Idea of Europe finds George Steiner reckoning with Europe from a number of different angles. “Europe,” he writes, “is the place where Goethe’s garden almost borders on Buchenwald, where the house of Corneille abuts on the market-place in which Joan of Arc was hideously done to death.” It is, in other words, a continent rich with contradiction, whose many tensions—cultural, so-cial, political, economic, and religious—have for centuries conspired to pull it apart, even as it has become more and more unified.

But what lies ahead for a continent whose borders are growing and economic might is strengthening, even as its cultural identity recedes? A continent where, in Steiner’s words, “young Englishmen choose to rank David Beckham high above Shakespeare and Darwin in their list of national treasures”? This is the trajectory that Steiner explores so brilliantly in The Idea of Europe.

BENJAMIN SCHWARTZ has served in a variety of national security positions within the United States government, including in the Department of State, Department of Defense, and Department of Energy. This is his first book.

A nuclear weapon explodes in a major American city and no one can prove who is responsible. The devastation is horrifying, but even more alarming is the limited options available for the United States government to respond. What happens next?

In Right of Boom, national security specialist Benjamin Schwartz looks at what can—and will—happen after a nuclear explosion takes place in the United States, the event that Presidents Obama and Bush, as well as would-be Presidents Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton, have acknowledged as the greatest single national security threat we face. Hypothesizing an explosion in downtown Washington, D.C., Schwartz maps out the likely ramifications while going deep into history to explore how this event became inevitable in the first place. Drawing from his experience as an analyst at the Departments of Defense, State, and Energy, Schwartz offers a fully panoramic view of a terrify-ing reality.

• A TV series based on the Simon Serrailler mysteries is in the works

Praise for the Simon Serrailler mysteries:

“ Not all great novelists can write crime fiction, but when one like Susan Hill does it, the result is stunning.” —Ruth Rendell

“ As every Trollope reader knows, English cathedral towns can be hotbeds of viciousness and vice. And so it is in Lafferton, where Susan Hill sets her thoughtful mysteries.” —The New York Times Book Review

“ Beautifully written . . . Hill is giving us a timeless panorama of life and death in an English town, one in which a murder investigation is only one drama among many.” —Entertainment Weekly

Susan Hill—the Man Booker Prize nominee and winner of the Whitbread, Somerset Maugham, and John Llewellyn Rhys awards—returns with a gripping new novel, the latest chap-ter in one of the most acclaimed mystery series of our time.

From the outside, the cathedral town of Lafferton seems idyllic, but in many ways it is just like any other place. It suf-fers from the same kinds of crime, is subject to the same pres-sures from a rapidly changing world, and has the same hopes and fears as any number of towns up and down the land.

When Simon Serrailler is called in by Lafferton’s new Chief Constable, Kieran Bright, he is met by two plainclothes officers, who ask him to take the principal role in a difficult,

potentially dangerous undercover operation. He must leave town immediately, without telling anyone—not even his girl-friend Rachel, who has only just moved in with him.

Meanwhile, Simon's sister Cat is facing difficult choices at work, as Lafferton’s hospice closes its bedded units—and at home, as her daughter is presented with a glittering oppor-tunity that they would have to struggle to afford. And all is not well with Simon and Cat's stepmother, Judith, either.

To complete his special operation, Simon must inhabit the mind of the worst kind of criminal. This takes its toll on Simon and—as the investigation unfolds—also on the town and some of its most respected citizens.

In the eighth of the successful Simon Serrailler series, the Chief Superintendent is faced with worse crimes than ever, and the town of Lafferton is left reeling

Praise for the work of Graeme Thomson:

“ Better musical surveys are hard to find, and the results are positively life-affirming.” —Paste

“ That rarest of rock & roll studies: expertly researched, restrained yet stylish, and in perfect tune with its subject’s work.” —Austin Chronicle

As a Beatle, Harrison underwent a bewilderingly compressed early adulthood, buffeted by unprec-edented levels of fame and success. The notoriously shy performer mostly ceded the spotlight to his more flamboyant bandmates John, Paul, and Ringo, but after the band’s breakup, Harrison charted a new path all his own. In this elegant, in-depth biography, renowned music journalist Graeme Thomson tracks Harrison assiduously through his many changes and conflicts, from schoolboy guitar-ist to global superstar, God-seeker to independent filmmaker, and marks the perennial struggle of a man attempting to walk a spiritual path lined with temptation.

Drawing on scores of new interviews with close friends and collaborators, rigorous research and critical insight, George Harrison: Behind The Locked Door is a fascinating account of the motives and varied achievements of an often misunderstood man.

MIKHAIL KHODORKOVSKY is Russia’s best-known political prisoner. Prior to his arrest on October 25, 2003, Khodorkovsky had been known as one of Russia’s most successful entrepreneurs and as a pioneering philanthropist. He led the fight against corruption in Russia, encouraged inward investment and promoted civil society. Pardoned in December 2013, he lives in Switzerland and works on behalf of prisoners’ rights.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky was Russia’s leading busi-nessman and an outspoken Kremlin critic. Under his leadership, the oil company Yukos revived the Russian oil industry, and as the company thrived, he began sponsoring programs to encourage civil society and fight corruption.

When he was arrested at gunpoint in 2003, Khodorkovsky became Russia’s most famous po-litical prisoner. Sentenced to ten years in a Siberian penal colony on fraud and tax evasion charges, he was put on trial again in 2010 and sentenced to fourteen years, despite the fact that the new charg-es contradicted the earlier ones.

While imprisoned, Khodorkovsky fought for the rights of his fellow prisoners, going on hunger strike four times. After he was pardoned in 2013, he vowed to continue fighting for prisoners’ rights, and My Fellow Prisoners is a tribute to that work. A moving portrait of the prisoners Khodorkovsky met, My Fellow Prisoners tells the story of lives destroyed by bureaucratic criminality. It is a passionate call to recognize a human tragedy.

In this eye-opening account, Russia’s most famous political prisoner bears witness to his country’s brutal prison system

From Iron and Rust:

Before anyone moved, Honoratus spoke. “Emperor, possibly it would be good to send the head to Rome afterwards, have it burnt in the Forum or cast in the sewers. Such is usually the way with a usurper.”

For an instant Maximinus thought the usurper referred to was himself. His anger flared, then he realized. He could still be astounded at the creative ways in which Senators and the rest of the traditional elite habitually rewrote history, both their own and that of the Res Publica. Soon it would be almost as if they had never hailed Alexander Emperor, never sworn oaths for his safety or held office under him. Thirteen years of rule would be reduced to a fleeting revolt, a momentary aberration.

Blending heart-pounding action and historical accuracy, Harry Sidebottom’s bestselling Warrior of Rome series took readers from the shouts of the battlefield to the whisperings of the emperor’s inner circle. Now, Sidebottom sets his sights on one of the bloodiest periods of Roman history—the Year of the Six Emperors.

In spring AD 235, a surprise attack and the brutal murder of Emperor Alexander and his mother ends the Sev-eran dynasty and shatters four decades of Roman certainty. Military hero Maximinus Thrax is the first Caesar risen from the barracks. A simple man of steel and violence, he will

fight for Rome unconditionally. The Senators praise the new Emperor with elaborate oratory, but will any of them accept a Caesar who was once a shepherd boy? In the north, as the merciless war against the barbarians consumes men and treasure, rebellion and personal tragedy drive Maximinus to desperate extremes, bloody revenge, and the borders of sanity.

Iron and Rust creates a world both sophisticated and brutal, yet firmly rooted in history. Game of Thrones-meets-300: Rise of an Empire, this is a world of intrigue, murder, passion, and war—a world where men will kill to sit on the Throne of the Caesars.

The product of a lifetime’s reflection, The Last Escaper is Peter Tunstall’s unforgettable memoir of his days in the British Royal Air Force and as one of the most celebrated British POWs of World War II. Tunstall was an infamous tormentor of his German captors. Dubbed the “cooler king” on ac-count of his long spells in solitary, he once dropped a water “bomb” directly in the lap of a high-ranking German officer. He also devised an ingenious meth-od for smuggling coded messages back to London. But above all he was a highly skilled pilot, loyal friend, and trusted colleague.

Without false pride or bitterness, Tunstall recounts the hijinks of training to be a pilot, terrify-ing bombing raids, and elaborate escape attempts at once hilarious and deadly serious—all part of a poignant and human war story superbly told by a natural raconteur. The Last Escaper is a captivating final testament by the “last man standing” from the Greatest Generation.

Praise for the work of Andrew Marr:

“ Lively, readable and engaging . . . vivid character studies and colorful vignettes, some of cinematic brilliance.” —The Guardian

“ Superb, colorful, outspoken, fresh, and richly entertaining. Don’t miss.” —The Times

ANDREW MARR is a former editor of the Independent and BBC political editor. His acclaimed television documentary series include Andrew Marr’s History of Modern Britain and Andrew Marr’s The Making of Modern Britain. He is also a hugely successful nonfiction author.

It’s September 2017, and the United Kingdom is on the verge of a crucial referendum that will determine, once and for all, if the country re-mains a member of the European Union or goes its own way. But, unsuspected by the electorate, and unknown to all but a handful of members of the Prime Minister’s innermost circle, there is a shocking secret at the very heart of government that could change everything in an instant. A group of ruthlessly determined individuals will stop at nothing—including murder—to prevent that from happening.

Andrew Marr’s first novel is a darkly comic tale of deception and skullduggery at Downing Street and Whitehall. Making full use of his unrivalled in-side knowledge of the British political scene, Marr has created a sparkling entertainment, a wholly original depiction of Westminster and its denizens, and a fascinating, irreverent glimpse behind the parliamentary curtain.

Praise for Tulip Fever:

“ Sumptuous prose . . . Reads like a thriller.” —The New York Times Book Review

“ An artful novel in every sense of the word . . . Deftly evokes 17th-century Amsterdam’s vibrant atmosphere.” —Los Angeles Times

“ Elegantly absorbing . . . The sensuality that permeates the book—its vivid, fleshy detail—grounds the fable in experience.” —New York Newsday

In her effortlessly winning novels Tulip Fever and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Deborah Moggach charmed readers and critics alike with her generous prose and hilarious dialogue. With Heartbreak Hotel, Moggach has triumphed once again.

When retired actor Buffy decides to leave London and move to rural Wales, he has no idea what he is letting himself in for.

In possession of a run-down bed and breakfast that leans more toward the shabby than the chic and is, quite literally, miles from nowhere, Buffy realizes that he needs to fill the beds—and fast. Otherwise, his vision of the pastoral countryside will go up in smoke.

Enter a motley collection of guests: Harold, whose wife has run off with a younger woman; Amy, who’s been unexpect-edly dumped by her (not-so) nebbishy boyfriend and Andy, the hypochondriac postman whose girlfriend is much too much for him to handle. But under Buffy’s watchful eye, this disparate group of strangers finds that they have more in common than perhaps they first thought.

A charming romantic comedy that will captivate even the most determined urbanite, Heartbreak Hotel is a supreme entertainment.

ZOË HOWE is a British rock writer whose work has appeared in The Quietus, NME, BBC Music, Holy Moly, and Company, amongst other outlets.

Lyrical visionary, enduring style icon, and one indispensable fifth of post-Peter Green megaband Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks is one of the most recognizable figures in rock ’n’ roll history—very much Fleetwood Mac’s “Queen Bee,” as Mick Fleetwood himself described her. With gold and qua-druple platinum solo albums under her beaded belt, Stevie Nicks has enjoyed the ultimate in rock ‘n’ roll success as a recording artist—but this charmed life has come as a result of hard graft, self-belief, and a devotion to creativity above all; hers has been a journey of intense highs and lows.

This new biography, a celebration of the Stevie Nicks phenomenon, takes us on her journey from peripatetic Midwest childhood to her explosion onto the music scene as chiffon-swathed rock goddess, right up to present day. Including exclusive inter-views with some of Stevie’s associates and collabo-rators from over the years, author Zoë Howe explores the mystique while retaining the magic of this modern-day musical sorceress and wise woman of rock.

JEREMY REED (no relation) is an award-winning poet, novelist, and counterculture biographer, who has published over thirty books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. He performs with the band Ginger Light.

Lou Reed influenced generations of copyists that took note of his outlaw status, ambiguous sexual orientation characterized by his seventies relation-ship with the transvestite Rachel, his implacable mystique, and his cool and defiant attitude as the narrator of subcultures.

First published in Britain in 1994 and now available for the first time in America, Waiting for the Man, focuses on Lou Reed as rock’s principal literary avatar, paying special attention to his con-troversial lyrics and prototypical garage sound. Author Jeremy Reed (no relation) is a fellow poet—one praised by J. G. Ballard as “the most original poet writing today” and by Bjork as “the most beau-tiful outrageous poet in the world”—and thus he examines Lou Reed’s career through an entirely dif-ferent lens than other rock biographies. Taking in the sweep of Reed’s career from Velvet Underground to the variants of forty years of resistant solo pio-neering, Waiting For the Man accesses the man and his music, with an extraordinary perception and attention to detail.

JOHN LAUNER is on the senior staff of the Tavistock Clinic in London, the leading training institute in the UK for psychological treatment, and is the associate dean for postgraduate medical education at the University of London.

Who was Sabina Spielrein? She is probably best known for her notorious affair with Carl Jung, which was dramatized in the film A Dangerous Method, starring Keira Knightley. Yet her life story is much more compelling than just one famous relationship. Spielrein overcame family and psychological abuse to become a profoundly original thinker in her own right.

Sex Versus Survival is the first biography to put her life and ideas at the center of the story and examine Spielrein’s key role in the development of psychoanalysis. Drawing on fresh research into Spielrein’s diaries, papers, and correspondence, John Launer shows how Spielrein’s overlooked ideas—rejected by Freud and Jung but substan-tially vindicated by later developments in psychol-ogy and evolutionary biology—may represent the last and most important stage in the rediscovery of an extraordinary life.

Praise for Free Radicals:

“ An exuberant tour through the world of scientists behaving badly.” —The New York Times

“ Fascinating . . . Free Radicals reminds readers that scientific advances sometimes require creativity and vision.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer

MICHAEL BROOKS, who holds a PhD in quantum physics, is the author of Free Radicals and 13 Things that Don’t Make Sense. He is a consultant at New Scientist and has a biweekly column for New Statesman.

The atom. The Big Bang. DNA. Natural selection. All are ideas that have revolutionized science—and all were dismissed out of hand when they first ap-peared. The surprises haven’t stopped in recent years, and in At the Edge of Uncertainty, bestselling author Michael Brooks investigates the new wave of radical insights that are shaping the future of scientific discovery.

Brooks takes us to the extreme frontiers of what we understand about the world. He journeys from the observations that might rewrite our story of how the cosmos came to be, through the novel biology behind our will to live, and on to the physi-ological root of consciousness. Along the way, he examines how it’s time to redress the gender im-balance in clinical trials, explores how merging hu-mans with other species might provide a solution to the shortage of organ donors, and finds out whether the universe really is like a computer or if the flow of time is a mere illusion.

“ Arresting and disturbing . . . Lovelock writes wonderfully well. With the authority of age, his voice is that of an elder statesman . . . The result is mellifluous and fluent.” —Nature

“ Though the subject matter could scarcely be more discouraging, Lovelock’s fluent prose and vast range of knowledge make it a surprisingly easy read. . . . His writing has enormous warmth and vitality.” —Financial Times

“ The most important book for me this year . . . Lovelock is the most prescient of scientists. . . . He has given us a handbook for human survival.” —John Gray, The Guardian

Now in his 95th year, James Lovelock has been hailed as “the man who conceived the first wholly new way of looking at life on earth since Charles Darwin” (Independent) and “the most profound scientific thinker of our time” (Literary Review).

A Rough Ride to the Future introduces two new Lovelock-ian ideas. The first is that three hundred years ago, when Thomas Newcomen invented the steam engine, he was un-knowingly beginning what Lovelock calls “accelerated evolu-tion,” a process that is bringing about change on our planet roughly a million times faster than Darwinian evolution. The second is that as part of this process, humanity has the capacity to become the intelligent part of Gaia, the self- regulating earth system whose discovery Lovelock first an-nounced nearly fifty years ago.

A Rough Ride to the Future is also an intellectual autobiography, in which Lovelock reflects on his life as a lone scientist, and asks—eloquently—whether his career trajec-tory is possible in an age of increased bureaucratization.

We are now changing the atmosphere again, and Lovelock argues that there is little that can be done about this. But instead of feeling guilty, we should recognize what is happening, prepare for change, and ensure that we survive as a species so we can contribute to—perhaps even guide—the next evolution of Gaia. The road will be rough, but if we are smart enough, life will continue on earth in some form far into the future.

Bestselling author of The Revenge of Gaia James Lovelock—the great scientific visionary of our age—presents a radical vision of humanity’s future

Praised by Lev Grossman as “stunning . . . and very, very wicked,” The Circle, Book One of the Engelsfors Trilogy, introduced six teenage girls with supernatu-ral powers who became the Chosen Ones, destined to fight against the ultimate evil. By the end of the second book, Fire, only four girls remain—the last defense against the mysterious, demonic forces that have been plaguing Engelsfors.

Minoo, Anna-Karin, Vanessa and Linnéa are still coming to terms with Ida's death when evil strikes again, barely a month after the showdown in the school gym. They have no chance to recover, and no choice but to rally together to try to prevent the apocalypse—even while their personal dramas threaten to tear them apart. “ Mishka Ben-David delivers spy thrillers with all the authenticity and inside knowledge of an ex-Mossad agent.” —Simon Sebag Montefiore, author of Jerusalem: The Biography

MISHKA BEN-DAVID was born in 1952 in Israel. He holds an MA in comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin and a PhD in Hebrew literature from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Ben-David served in the Mossad for twelve years, becoming a high-ranking officer, and he is now a full-time novelist living outside Jerusalem. His spy novels are being adapted for an international TV series.

For over a decade, Mishka Ben-David was a profes-sional spy, taking part in secret operations on be-half of the Mossad, Israel’s legendary intelligence agency. But after twelve years of service, Ben-David quit the Mossad and became an acclaimed novelist, describing life as a spy from within. A major best-seller in Israel, Duet in Beirut is Ben-David’s first book to appear in English.

Ronen, an expelled Mossad agent, has disap-peared following a failed assassination attempt against the Hezbollah operative responsible for suicide bombings in Israel. Feared to be on an un-authorized mission, it is up to his former command-er, Gadi, to track Ronen down and stop him from causing harm both to himself and to his country. The physical and intellectual scuffle between the two men becomes one of deeper, moral inquiry.

Written with a master novelist’s terse convic-tion, Duet in Beirut takes us inside a much-dis-cussed but little understood world. As revealing in its psychological acuity as it is in its portrait of life in the Mossad, Duet in Beirut is an essential thriller of espionage and political intrigue.

In this riveting thriller by an ex-Mossad agent, an Israeli spy risks his life to save a Hezbollah leader

Praise for The Forever Marriage:

“ Funny, surprising and gratifyingly honest, this novel poses unsparing questions about love and betrayal and the reasons we make the choices we do.” —MORE Magazine

“ Bauer and The Forever Marriage poignantly and powerfully illustrate the great and often tragic ironies of life.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

“ With lovely prose and fine pacing, Bauer offers a sensitive portrait of a flawed woman coming to terms with a lifetime of regrets.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Forgiveness 4 You is a startlingly contemporary novel about faith and religion in an America addicted to quick fixes and instant gratification.

Gabriel McKenna is an ex-Catholic priest, and with his quiet job at a quiet bookstore, he is—slowly—rebuilding his life. But even at the bookstore, people from all walks of life find their way to him and feel compelled to share their stories and reveal to him their deepest, guiltiest secrets.

One of these people is Madeline Murray, a high-powered advertising executive, who, hours after her weepy confession, has a revelation: If she felt so comforted by this stranger, perhaps there’s something remunerative to his consoling abilities.

Madeline has a vision: a business that will offer a secu-

lar form of confession and forgiveness—the comforts of religion, without the religion. Without knowing exactly how it happened (and whether any of it is morally sound) Gabriel is transformed by Madeline and her colleagues into the centerpiece of the forgiveness brand. And so a therapeutic revolution unleashes itself on America—or is about to, until a terrible secret threatens to torpedo the business and the man at the middle of it. Which would all be bad enough, were it not for temptation—in the form of Madeline herself.

In Forgiveness 4 You, Ann Bauer combines her gift for characterization with a broad American canvas to dazzling effect. Written with verve and confidence, Forgiveness 4 You is an unusually ambitious novel that blends cutting-edge satire with a serious mediation on faith in the twenty-first century.

At once a brilliant satire set in the world of advertising and a serious reckoning with religion, the remarkable new novel by the author of The Forever Marriage

A trillion dollar financial industry is revolutionizing the global economy. Governments and corporations across the Islamic world are increasingly turning to finance that complies with Shari‘a law in order to fund economic growth. Even in the West, Islamic finance is rapidly becoming an important al-ternative source of funding at a time when the conventional finance industry is reeling from the effects of the financial crisis.

From its origins in the seventh century, Islamic finance has sought to develop core ethical principles that are based in the foundations of Islam and Shari‘a. By engaging critically with the complexities of international finance, it has evolved and adapted into a world emerging from the economic and

moral aftermath of a global financial crisis. But with an increasing Western interest, is it able to remain true to the principles of its faith? Can it maintain its ideals of social jus-tice? Or is Islamic finance guilty of the very dangers it seeks to avoid?

In Heaven’s Bankers, Harris Irfan, one of the world’s leading Islamic finance bankers, gives unparalleled insight into the heart of this secretive industry. From his personal ex-perience of working with leading bankers, scholars and law-yers, he debunks the myths of Islamic banking, analyzes its greatest deals and looks to the future of a system that has reprioritized the very nature of money itself.

The groundbreaking and globetrotting exploration of the Islamic finance industry, by one of its leading practitioners

Praise for Raja Alem:

“ Raja Alem’s reputation in contemporary literature [is] similar to Nabokov’s in ours: masterful, erudite, witty, and somewhat dangerous.” —BOMB

RAJA ALEM was born in Mecca and now lives in Paris. She has received many awards in the Arab world and in Europe for her novels, plays, stories, and other writing. In 2011, she became the first woman to win the International Prize for Arabic Fiction.

When a dead woman is discovered in Abu Al Roos, one of Mecca’s many alleys, no one will claim the body because they are ashamed by her nakedness. As we follow Detective Nassir’s investigation of the case, the secret life of the holy city of Mecca is revealed.

Tackling powerful issues with beautiful and evocative writing, Raja Alem reveals a city—and a civilization—at once beholden to brutal customs, and reckoning (uneasily) with new traditions. Told from a variety of perspectives—including that of Abu Al Roos itself—The Dove’s Necklace is a virtuosic work of literature, and an ambitious por-trait of a changing city that deserves our attention.

JONATHAN HACKER is the director and producer of the film Path of Blood. He studied history at Oxford and film at USC. He has directed a wide range of documentaries including the feature length Britain’s First Suicide Bombers for BBC2.

Path of Blood tells the gripping and horrifying true story of the underground army which Osama Bin Laden created in order to attack his number one target: his home country, Saudi Arabia. His aim was to conquer the land of the Two Holy Mosques, the land from where Islam had first originated, and, from there, to reestablish an Islamic Empire that could take on the West and win.

Thomas Small and Jonathan Hacker use new insider evidence to expose the real story behind the Al Qaeda. Far from the image of single-minded holy warriors they present to the world, the bands of sol-diers are riven by infighting and lack of discipline. Drawing on unprecedented access to Saudi govern-ment archives, interviews with top intelligence of-ficials both in the Middle East and in the West, as well as with captured Al Qaeda militants, and with access to exclusive captured video footage from Al Qaeda cells, Path of Blood tells the full story of the terrorist campaign and the desperate and deter-mined attempt by Saudi Arabia’s internal security services to put a stop to it.

“ A cat’s cradle of a mystery with the interwoven stories pulled as tight as a piano wire.” —Martha Grimes

Hailed by A. N. Wilson as “one of the few crime novels I can think of where the ethical twists are every bit as thrilling as the narrative ones,” The Discourtesy of Death plunges us back into the fascinating and morally complex world of Father Anselm.

An anonymous letter sent to Larkwood’s Prior accuses Peter Henderson, an academic celebrity renowned for daring ideas, of a grotesque murder: the calculated killing of Jenny, his disabled partner, believed by everyone to have died peace-fully two years previously from a sudden attack of cancer.

But for this letter there is no evidence, no suspect and no crime. Time has moved on. Lives have been rebuilt. Grief and loss are tempered by a comforting thought: a paralyzed woman, once an acclaimed dancer, had died quickly and painlessly, spared a drawn out illness; a life marked by

agonizing misfortune had come to a merciful end.But now Anselm has been told the truth behind the

soothing lie. He must move cautiously to expose the killer and the killing. He must think of young Timothy, Jenny and Peter’s son. A boy who is still learning to live without his mother.

And so Anselm begins his most delicate investiga-tion yet, unaware that Jenny’s adoring father is also thinking of Timothy’s future; that this urbane former army officer is haunted by the memory of torture and shoot-to-kill operations in Northern Ireland; that he remains capable of anything, if he thinks it’s for the best; that he has set out to execute Peter Henderson.

Death, dying and killing, however, were never so complicated.

CASEY GRAY teaches English at New Mexico State University. His work has appeared in Ploughshares.

Set in the American Southwest, forty miles north of Juárez, Casey Gray’s ambitious, tragicomic, and ultimately redemptive novel follows a group of cus-tomers and employees through the twenty-four hour work cycle as they seek comfort and sustenance in-side of the cinderblock walls of a classic American institution—The Superstore.

On the eve of the company president’s visit to the store, a manager’s drunk text to a coworker leads to a series of consequences as brutal as they are wide-ranging: Everyone around him will be af-fected.

With a cast of characters featuring Ernesto, a local gang member struggling to choose a job pushing carts over a desultory life as a drug dealer; Wilma, a grandmother working double shifts to sup-port her family; and Keith, a high school student with a penchant for filmmaking, Gray offers a star-tlingly humane, utterly contemporary portrait of life on the suburban fringe.

A vision of an America barely getting by and assaulted by crime, corruption, and exploitation in all of its manifestations, Discount is nevertheless a triumphant and big-hearted novel that marks the arrival of a new voice we won’t soon forget.

Immigration, suburban poverty, and big-box retail converge in this audacious debut novel of a nation coming apart at the seams

“ Wrenching . . . Wide-ranging . . . This book is so important.” —New York Daily News

“ A powerful and heart-wrenching story that is unfortunately replicated far too many times by far too many people” —Ken Burns

DW GIBSON is the author of Not Working: People Talk About Losing a Job and Finding Their Way in Today’s Changing Economy. His work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The New York Observer, The Daily Beast, BOMB, and The Caravan. Gibson serves as director of Writers Omi at Ledig House in Ghent, New York, which is part of the Omi International Arts Center. He lives in New York City with his wife and daughter.

If you live in a city—and every year, more and more Americans do—you’ve seen firsthand how gentri-fication has transformed our surroundings. It has so altered the way cities look, feel, cost, and even smell to such an extent that it’s hard to imagine that it could ever have been otherwise.

Over the last few years, journalists, policy-makers, critics, and historians have all tried to ex-plain just what it is that happens when new money and new residents flow in, yet we’ve had very little access to the human side of this phenomenon.

Up and Coming captures the stories of the many kinds of people—brokers, buyers, sellers, renters, landlords, artists, contractors, politicians and everyone in between—who are being shaped by—and are shaping—the new New York City. In this extraordinary oral history, DW Gibson takes gentrification out of the op-ed columns and the textbooks and brings it to life. Gibson explains—in the voices of the people living through it—what urban change really looks and feels like.

In the plainspoken, casually authoritative tradition of Jane Jacobs and Studs Terkel, Up and Coming is an inviting and essential portrait of the way we live now.

P. G. Wodehouse is recognized as the greatest English comic writer of the twentieth century, right-ly admired throughout the world and translated into more than thirty languages. Launched on the twenty-fifth anniversary of his death, this series presents each Overlook Wodehouse as the finest edition of the master’s work ever published— beautifully designed and faithful to the original.

This season, Overlook is pleased to offer the latest two hilarious volumes. The Luck Stone is an early school story with, in Wodehouse’s own words, “a rather lurid plot.” And Over Seventy is an “autobiography with digressions” (Wodehouse’s words, again), rich with the master’s reflections on America, his adopted homeland.

P. G. WODEHOUSE (1881–1975) spent much of his life in Southampton, New York, but was born in England and educated in Surrey. He became an American citizen in 1955.
