Why develop Contributors?

A contributor is an individual who seeks and aspires to contribute – to self, to organization, and to society.

Such an individual is able to lead a life of fulfillment and increasing self-esteem. As a reward, contributors are also more valued and honoured by others.

The ‘contributor ideal’ is integral to the Indian tradition, and alive in our society. Every organization has at least 5-7% of its individuals who are constantly striving to make a difference to themselves, their teams, their companies, their customers, and society at large.

But we need more contributors who are conscious of their contribution – in educational institutions, in the government, in corporates, and in society.

More contributors implies – projects that get completed on time and to cost, services which work efficiently, systems which are less corrupt, businesses which are efficient and conscious of their role in society, and a society which translates its resources and investment into real improvement in the lives of individuals.

Systematically building contributors

will enable our society to -

– create honest and transparent

institutions;

– build efficient and conscious

businesses;

– deliver projects on time and cost;

– run customer-oriented services;

– channelize resources and

investment into real improvement

in the lives of people CONTRIBUTORS BY CHANCE

‘Effective action’ without ‘human values’ can yield personal benefits for individuals, but lead to a long-term cost to both nation and society.

‘Human values’ without ‘effective action’ can lead to noble ideas, but may not result in real changes in the world around us.

What is needed is a combination of ‘effectiveness’ with ‘human values’. This combination is crystallized in the “contributor mindset”.

Students who adopt and develop the right mindsets early in their professional career are able to bring about a positive and sustainable change in their overall personality. They are able to grow the right approaches to their peers, seniors, industry, and their own future. They become more responsible to society at large, and capable of shaping their own lives.

Universities can play a very important role in developing and nurturing the right mindsets within their students (and thereby “create a pipeline of contributors”).

The educational institution is the birthplace of a contributive society

CREATING A PIPELINE OF CONTRIBUTORS FOR SOCIETY

Building contributors calls

for an expansion of the role

of the educational

institution.

The role must go beyond

“unleashing the power to

contribute” in individuals

Organizations who want to go beyond

workers are looking for such contributors

(since they are the value-creators)

Universities / colleges choose to develop students as contributors (rather than just graduates)

Building a contributor entails changes at three levels. At the fundamental level, it requires the individual to re-examine his/her fundamental axioms of life. Example: What does success mean to me? What is my attitude to success and

failure?

At the personal practice level, the individual has to adopt supporting practices. Example: Contributors practise “trust commitments” by setting clear

expectations, and meeting them.

At the domain application level, the individual must visualize his/her contributions in various role contexts. Examples: contributor teacher,

contributor salesman, etc.

This comprehensive vision of contributorship has been crystallized by Illumine - a knowledge enablement lab - into a rigorous and methodologically sound, scalable pedagogical model. The model has four pillars:

(1) A curriculum framework which has translated the contributor vision into

48 specific “thinking shifts”

(2) A learning methodology that enables “discovery learning” in large classroom

scenarios, across multiple teachers / cultural contexts

(3) An ActivGuideTM - a digital platform that enables scaling of rich-content based

“vision discovery” to large number of students, each at their own pace

(4) A delivery audit framework that enables systematic intervention management,

and integrity of effectiveness of delivery

Institutions can now consciously develop contributors on a large scale

DEVELOPING CONTRIBUTORS IN A SCALABLE AND SUSTAINABLE MANNER

Individuals can be measured,

trained and enabled to

become contributors on a

mass basis.

It is this “teachability” that

makes contributorship so

valuable to our institutions

and society at large

The i-become University Interventioni-become is in conversation with leading public and private universities all over the country to embed the contributor ideal in graduating students through the university channel.

The i-become University Intervention comprises of 2 distinct models - (1) Contributor Initiative for university students (Collaborative Delivery Model)(2) Contributor Initiative for working professionals (Distance Learning Model)

We have developed a unique Enablement Package for each of the above models. The Enablement Package gives a university the capability to deliver the Contributor Initiative across the university on a systematic and sustainable basis. This means -(1) Vision Sharing with the university / college level leadership (2) Capacity-building of faculty for the program(3) Structured Classroom Support Programs for students(4) Study packs for students(5) Examination and Ongoing Assessment Frameworks(6) Continuous Online Mentoring Support for faculty and students

To achieve these enablement goals, a range of engagement media such as ActivGuideTM, Online Contributor Classroom, Mobile support, Social Media, and online libraries using downloadable content are used.

Each Enablement Package enables the university to seamlessly adopt the Contributor Initiative, and scale it quickly across large numbers of students.

Gujarat Technological University (GTU), is one of the larger universities in India, with more than 500 colleges and 400,000 students under its auspices. i-become collaborated with GTU to embed the Contributor Initiative into the curriculum as a complusory subject in all colleges under the university, thereby enabling over 1,00,000 students embark on a journey of contributorship. The program has been a pioneer multi-stakeholder initiative, with CSR Funding from Adani Group.
