HUTCHINS OLD BOYS' SESQUICENTENARY November is the 150th Anniversary of the first formal Hutchins Old Boys' function,
held on 22 November 1859. This special issue of The I vied Tower has been produced
to mark this occasion.
A circular forwarded to Old Boys in 1859 probably marks the beginning of the
Hutchins School Old Boys' Association.
Several of those who have beenfrom time to time at the Hutchins School
having lately met, and considered the desirability of having an annual
gathering of old schoolfellows it was unanimously resolved that we should
dine together once a year ...
It has accordingly been arranged that the first of such annual dinners will
take place on the evening of Tuesday, the 22nd instant, at Webb 's - tickets
fifteen shillings each, to be had of any of the Committee.
In order that the boys now at school may participate in the proposed
festivity, Mr Buckland has consented to give a holiday on the 22nd, and
during the day a cricket match will be p layed on the ground of the Southern
Tasmanian Cricket Club between eleven of the former and twenty-two of the
present scholars.
The Mercury reported that the Old Scholars won, 119 and 3 for 65, to the present
scholars' score of 61 and 116. The reporter noted that "the game excited considerable
interest among cricketers, and attracted the fair sex in great numbers". The dinner
afterwards must have been a timelessly typical "Old Boys" function. The Mercury
commented.
The usual loyal, local and cricketing toasts were duly given and responded
to, one and all receiving their due meed of cheers, and the festivities were
prolonged till Morpheus gave his warning.
The cricket match lapsed from time to time, but the Old Boys' function continued. In
the following year it was refined with the addition of the band of the Artillery Corps,
excellent wine and "by general request Mr. Bra m mall sang "Rifleman Form" which was greatly applauded".
The above information is extracted from Geoffrey Stephens'

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS
Sesquicentenary Students v Old Boys Cricket Match -War Memorial Oval 25 November 2009
Ray Vincent Lunch, Hadley's Hotel, 27 November 2009 12.00 Noon
There would be very few organisations that can celebrate a sesquicentenary in the same venue as the original
function. We are therefore delighted that we are able to hold this year's Ray
Vincent Lunch in the same venue as
that first dinner back in 1859. The name
has changed from Webb's to Hadley's
but the venue is still the same!
Please note that this function has
been brought forward one week from
the originally advertised date so that
RAY VINCENT
we can hold it in this venue. This has the added advantage of putting the function into the same week and month as 150 years ago!
A key feature of this year's lunch will be
the announcement of the I vied Tower
Award recipient for 2010.
Seating is limited- bookings are essential. Please complete the form on
the last page of this flyer.
Ray Vincent enrolled in Hutchins as a student in 1923- although his connections
go back further with his grandfather Rev HH Anderson being the third Headmaster.
In fact the current Headmaster and the two Bucklands are the only Headmasters of Hutchins with whom Ray has had no direct family or personal dealings.
Ray was involved with the Old Boys' Association in his capacity as either Secretary,
Assistant Secretary or President between 1926 and 1988. Even the war years and a
term as a Prisoner of War in Java and Timor did not divert him, as he spent his time
organising the preparations for the School's 1946 Centenary celebrations.
He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Hutchins Foundation in 1977.
Ray's son Tom continues the "family tradition" as an active member of the current Old
Boys' Committee.
The Ray Vincent Lunch is held each year in Term Three as a way of marking the
contribution that has been made by Ray.

HSOBA STRATEGIC PLAN 2009-2014 The Old Boys' Committee this year
undertook to develop a new strategic plan for the Association, in support
of the similar process that the School itself has been going through.
The key elements of the plan include
Providing active mentoring that
supports career and personal
choices for students and for Old Boys.
• Developing and promoting social,
sporting and cultural networking
opportunities that extend the
Alumni relationship with the
School and its community.
Are you on line yet?
• Supporting historical and archival
projects of the School.
The plan then identified key activities
in the areas of image and awareness,
events and activities, involvement,
School and School Community links and Governance.
In order to make sure that achievement of the plan becomes a work in progress
Committee meetings have been
restructured so that they follow key
elements of the plan.
Our Old Boys' on line communications directory continues to grow, with
over 1000 Old Boys now registered. It is a great way to keep in touch with
past colleagues and the School. It also helps us keep in touch with you and
let you know of future events.
Registration is straightforward- just go to
www.hutchins.tas.edu.au/oldboys and follow the links on that page.
REUNIONS 2010 Next year's Anniversary Reunion Dinner (for leavers from 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975,
1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2000) will be held on Saturday 7 August. Whilst full
details will be announced earlier in 2010 you might like to make a note now and try
and book those cheap air fares well in advance! These events keep growing each
year, so make a note and book early!
If you would like to help as a year-group co-ordinator please contact Tony Smithies in
the Alumni Office on 03-6221 4206 (email [email protected])
Coordinators needed in Capital Cities We are also in the early stages of
planning a series of interstate (and
possibly international) reunions in
2010. To make this work, we really need to get some co-ordinators "on the ground" in the mainland capitals. Main
tasks will be to be a "go to" contact
both for the School and for the local
members as we get closer to events.
If you would like to help out here
please contact Tony Smithies in the Alumni Office on 03-6221 4206 (email [email protected])
