THE HISTORY OF THE HUT
The Gardens of Peace, Edwin and Ramira Peace’s private paradise situated at the edge of the rugged Florida Everglades, dates back to their inception in the 1920’s. Edwin, a Merchant Marine and German by heritage, made his living sailing the seven seas. After a landing in Tahiti, he met Princess Ramira Stepgee and offered a pocket knife for her hand in marriage. After marrying the Princess settled with Edwin on the property that is now the home of The Hut and the Peace Tropical Gardens.
Mr. Peace chose the tropical climate of the Lee County area to begin his experimental gardens, receiving permission from the Federal Government to import rare tropical plants, turning the gardens into a tropical wonderland. A frequent visitor of the era, Thomas Edison, admired and enjoyed the gardens and is said to have experimented and exchanged plants with Mr. Peace. Many of the rare specimens at the Edison Home in Ft. Myers are there as a result of their friendship.
Edwin and Ramira reared two children, son Oscar and daughter, Lolita. Oscar became a Navy man and Lolita became a famous Tahitian dancer, learning from her mother the Princess. The children inherited the Gardens at Princess Ramira’s death in 1967.
Oscar and Lolita sold the property to Marie Louise Books Rector, who with her husband, owned and operated the famous Newgen Inn, in Newgen, Maine, and The Royal Palm Hotel in Ft. Myers. Marie had a dream to return the Gardens to their once great splendor and to build a majestic, tropical restaurant in the Gardens. The Hut Restaurant was built and opened in the early 1970’s.
The Hut thrived for many years, a spot of countless weddings, receptions and special events, for locals and for a growing tourist trade. Al and Pat Bliss owned the facility for many years and entertainers Gary link and Jerry Dycke called the stage home, entertaining thousands over the years.
By the end of the 90’s the restaurant and grounds had been sold and had gone through several incarnations of revival in the early 2000’s, but never could get back to the glory it once held with locals and tourists. The facility had fallen into disrepair and the grounds were a glint of their once beautiful glory. It closed, and stayed closed for over three years.
In 2010, Tommy Lee Cook, Owner of the Buckingham Blues Bar and Thomas Cook General Contracting, stepped In to save the historic facility. After 8 months of extensive renovation, inside and out, the gardens and new boardwalks were ready to take its rightful place in Southwest Florida History.
