Historical ContextMockingjay is a science fiction novel by American author Suzanne Collins. The book continues the story ofKatniss Everdeen, who agrees to unify the districts ofPanemin a rebellion against the tyrannicalCapitol. The main inspiration forThe Hunger Games triologycame fromthe story ofTheseusand the Minotaur. In Greek mythology, as a punishment for the killing of the Kings son,Athens was forced to sacrifice 7 youths and 7 maidens, who were put in the Labyrinth and killed by the Minotaur. Theseus decided to put an end to the Minotaur and Kings terror, so he volunteered to join the third group of victims, ultimately killing the Minotaur and leading his companions out of the monster's Labyrinth.

Historical ContextThere are also many parallels between theRoman Empireand the fictional nation ofPanem. Panem came from the Latin phrase "Panem et Circenses", which means "Bread and Circuses and refers to the strategy used by Roman emperors to appease the masses by providing them with food and entertainment.Suzanne Collins describes the Hunger Games as "an updated version of the Roman gladiator games, which entails a ruthless government forcing people to fight to the death as popular entertainment."

Production Friday 30th October 2015 production notes from the film had been released. Information from the director, Francis Lawrence, included:One of the things that Im most excited about is the films final scene, there was a really strong feeling on the set when we got to the scene a feeling that all the history of all these characters through the course of these four movies had built up to this singular moment. I hope audiences really feel that history and also a sense of the future. Everything that has happened to Katniss and all the themes of the story have wound together to come down to this final glimpse of her world, so it was very important that we really get to live inside it. There is more action, more scope and more emotion and most of all the fil brings the story to its moving conclusion.

Production Peter Craig adapted the screenplays for the Hunger Games alongside screenwriter Danny Strong. In an interview on November 1st 2015 Craig said;Theres a lot more plot in it, there were all of the much bigger iconic moments from the book that the fans loved and wanted to see. So the challenge was just how much things stacked up on top of each other. We had to make sure that we were servicing all of it and were true to all of it. Plus, I think all the things Suzanne really wanted to get across in the book were all really inPart 2.
