The Human Body

Life Sustaining Processes

Let’s Take A Look …

Inside the Human Body • Start at 2:50min.

Overview …

1. Respiratory System

2. Circulatory System

3. Nervous System

4. Skeletal System

5. Muscular System

6. Integumentary System

7. Exocrine System

8. Endocrine System

9. Digestive System

10. Lymphatic System

11. Urinary System

Life Sustaining Processes:• Support & Movement• Energy Flow• Regulation• Defense• Waste Management• Gas Exchange• Responds

This weeks topics

HomeostasisComparative AnatomyLevels of Organization

Comparative Anatomy

• Your body is just like a machine.. Only BETTER..!!

• Think about your body:How is the human body similar to non-living objects… ??

Homeostasis

• Staying healthy keeps our body in balance!!

• Regulation of life sustaining conditions is called Homeostasis

Internal Life Sustaining conditions:

• Temperature

Internal Life Sustaining conditions:

• Blood Pressure

• pH

• Blood Sugar

Levels of Organization

• CellsBasic unit of life

• TissuesMade of different cells working together

• OrgansMade of different tissues working together

• Organ SystemsMade of different organs working together

Organisms

BIG IDEA: Working together to achieve homeostasis ….

Topic 2:• Support & Movement

a) Skeletal Systemb) Muscular Systemc) Nervous System

Skeletal System

Function:•Gives the body:

1. Support2. Form3. Protection

Skeletal System

Structure:1. Bones2. Ligaments3. Cartilage

Skeletal System

Structure:

1. Bones

• 206 bones• Store Minerals• Make Blood Cells• Protect Organs• Attachment for muscles

Skeletal System

Structure:

2. Ligaments

• Hold bones together

Skeletal System

Structure:

3. Cartilage

• Protects the ends of bones• Forms Ears & Nose

So.. What are the 3 structures of the Skeletal System?

1. Bones2. Ligaments3. Cartilage

We have 206 bones…

We will learn 22 bones …

Muscular System

Function:

1. Attaches to bones (movement)

2. Allows movement inside the body (blood, food, urine)

3. Generate body heat

Muscular System

Structure:

1. Skeletal Muscles• 600 muscles attach to bones & move

bones at joints

2. Smooth Muscle• Make tubed organs like intestines, blood

vessels & bladder

3. Cardiac Muscle• Make the heart

There are over 600 skeletal muscles …

• We will learn 14 skeletal muscles …

Nervous System

Function:• Sends impulse to muscles &

glands

Structures:• Brain• Spinal cord• Nerve cells• Sense organs (Eyes, Nose, Tongue,

Skin)

How to the 3 Systems Work together?

1.Skeletal System2.Muscular System3.Nervous System

• Nerves send an impulse to the Muscles • Muscles contract & pull on Bones• Bones then cause movement at joints

• Nerves also send impulses to cardiac & all smooth muscles.

• Those muscles contract and cause internal movement for urine, blood & food.
