Pierce Allman graduated from Highland Park H.S. in 1950. He attended Southern Methodist University on a Dallas Morning News Scholarship, where he achieved many honors. After he graduated in 1954 with a BA in Radio/TV, he served in Strategic Air Command.
After military service, he was a Dallas deejay at KGKO, WRR, KBOX, and WFAA. He was named Manager of Programming and Production at WFAA, the youngest such in the USA. He converted the station into a modern operation and moved into a new building at the Communications Center. He also served as Chair of Dallas News Employee Roundtable. He was named by Jaycees as “Dal-lasʼ Outstanding Young Man.”
He did the only on-scene broadcast of the JFK assassination from the lobby of the School Book Depository Building (later the Secret Service confirmed that the individual who told the telephone location was Oswald on his way out of the building). He has be-come a narrator for the Sixth Floor Museum tour.
He left WFAA at the invitation of Willis Tate to be the Director of Alumni Affairs at SMU, where he converted records to compu-ters and produced the first alumni directory; produced the 50th Anniversary Celebration; wrote lyrics to a new fight song; esta-
blished the Women of Achievement Award (now part of the Disting-uished Alumni Awards); solicited funds and built the Thornton Alumni Center; established Golden Mustangs; “Alumnites”; coor-dinated first season ticket campaign to compete with Dallas Cow-boys and sold a record number – and Mustangs won SWC title.
He left SMU to set up the public relations division at Tracy-Locke. He won a CLIO, a Freedom Foundation Honor Medal and other international awards for his pioneering work for the State Bar of Texas. He then established his own marketing firm; then enter-ed residential real estate in 2003.
He has many awards and memberships, including the Disting-uished Alumnus Award from Highland Park H.S. in 2012; the Dis-tinguished Service Award from the Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He is a Life Member of the HPHS Alumni Asso-ciation, the SMU Alumni Association and the Texas State Histori-cal Association, and a Fellow of the Dallas Historical Society where he received the Jubilee History Maker Award of Excellence, 2011. He is the Vice Chair of the Board of the SM Wright Founda-tion, and was recognized for pilot programs in South Dallas. He has received many other civic and professional awards and honors.

passed away. Please keep Fred and his fami-ly in your prayers. Cindy Cummings led the Pledge of Allegiance and the “Star Spangled Banner.” Richard Stanford, assisted by Ariane Urschler with the mike, introduced our visitors and guests. Daniel Jacob an-nounced the Marketplace advertiser of the week.
Rob Eggemeyer, Chairman of the Vet-erans Support Committee, recognized our clubʼs veterans. Tom Rhodes reported that RCPC has served dinner to the families at Fisher House once a quarter, but Sonny Bry-anʼs has agreed to provide a barbecue dinner every month. The next time will be Thursday evening, Nov. 19 from 6:00 to 7:30pm. Tom mentioned that everyone was invited to help out, but that the location was hard to find, so ask him for directions. Happy Franklin introduced new mem-ber Nate Wey-mouth, who is a professor
and engin-eering con-sultant in energy. Shawn Foster
Cub Amos introduced our speaker today, Commander Edgar K.
Byers, accompanied by three crew members, of the “Dallas” nuclear powered attack submarine. He started by
saying how much the military had in common with Rotary, including a worldwide reach, a similar population, and the provision of human-itarian service. He described the “Dallas” as similar to a nuclear powered sports car which could sail any ocean undetected. There is a crew of one hundred and thirty-five, including fifteen officers. He noted that eighty percent of the worldʼs population lives within 1,000 miles of the coast and ninety percent of the worldʼs trade travels by ship. About $7 Trillion in trade passes through the South China Sea every year. He stated that they are deployed in defense of the U.S., but can attack, search and rescue. They accomplish their mission through stealth and through strength. They have tomahawk missiles and because they are nuclear, can travel long distances. The only thing that limits them is their supply of food; when they leave port, their freezers are full and the decks are lined with canned foods. The crew is all volunteer, and is the best train-ed in the Navy. Many of the crew have prior experience to military service, but have joined for greater opportunities. He was accompan-ied by Tyrone Rock, the Chief of Boat, the highest ranking enlisted man, Machinist 1st Class Joshua Ehret, Senior Sailor, and Mach-inist 3rd Class Patrick Flynn, Junior Sailor. Commander Byers brought a plaque to pre-sent to the club.
THE HUB
THOUGHTS ON . . .
Democracy and defense are not substitutes for one another. Either alone will fail.We need men who can dream of things that never were.If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.Liberty without learning is always in peril; learning without liberty is always in vain. The American, by nature, is optimistic. He is experimental, an inventor and a builder who builds best when called upon to build greatly.Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.
