History 101Hastings-born Philip MacDonald made a positive impact in this world. He was the son of Dr. Joseph and Irene MacDonald, born in 1924, in their home west of the gazebo on Front Street. The house can still be identified by its unique
stone fence. As a youth, he often frequented Henry Scriver’s boat building shop just across the street (the only remaining building) that housed Hastings Marine for years. It was also a well-known meeting place of Hastings Hall of Famer, Boston Bruin, Dit Clapper. Phil went on to Osgoode Hall and embarked on a distinguished career as a lawyer and financial manager. He founded York Trust, was Vice President of British International Finance, President of Scarborough Finance and Simcoe Retail
Acceptance. He also managed political campaigns. He dedicated much of his time and money to charitable projects. In Kenya, he built and funded “Patricia MacDonald Home”, a children’s shelter. It was named after Phil’s wife. Phil
passed away two years ago but his goodwill lives on!

Animal CrackersOwls have rings of curved feathers around their eyes (facial discs) that are attached to muscles that control small holes on the side of their head (ears). These raptors can move their
facial discs to help them locate and amplify sounds!Scientists refer to pincers, on creatures like crayfish and crabs, as chelipeds (KELL-uh-peds). Chelipeds means “a leg that
includes a claw”.
