Topping up Operation

Inside the temporary Terrapin offices.

As everyone on Mi tche ldean site can see for themselves, Bui ld ing 50 , w h i c h houses our new Datacentre, is not remaining a single storey affair. It was designed to accept upper f loors, and n o w that the necessary approval has been received, three more storeys are being added.

These upper f loors wi l l abut Bui ld ing 44 and wi l l be l inked w i t h Engineering Bui ld ing 38 by a br idge similar to that l ink ing Bui ld ings 44 and 23. This means an author ised person cou ld wa lk r ight f rom, say, the Drawing Off ice in Bui ld ing 38 to Finance & Admin is t ra t ion in Bui ld ing 23 w i t h o u t get t ing his feet w e t on a rainy day.

The first f loor w i l l be g iven over to Design Engineering. The team w o r k i n g on a new produc t in the Terrapin bu i ld ing wi l l be g iven a more permanent home here, enabl ing the removal of the temporary off ices as forecast.

The second f loor w i l l enable the expanding Product ion Engineering Department to acquire much needed space and also provide new

accommodat ion for other departmental personnel at present in rather cramped quarters. The th i rd and t o p f loor w i l l be reserved for the Manu fac tu r ing Group Admin is t ra t ion staff, inc lud ing those in Bui ld ings 4 0 and 4 1 , and a Directors' suite. Each f loor w i l l have its o w n recept ion area, and a central recept ion area wi l l be prov ided on the g round f loor where there is a c o m m o n entrance between the Nor th and South Blocks of Bui ld ing 50.

Str ingent securi ty measures, part icularly w i t h regard to the Datacentre in the North Block, are having to be observed, in line w i t h corporate requirements. Whi le const ruct ion is go ing on, the area is potent ia l ly dangerous and the temporary cha in- l ink fence is a necessary safeguard. Our new computer is already installed in the Datacentre, and In format ion Systems Department is comple t ing a phased removal into Bui ld ing 50 wh i le the exist ing computer runs concurrent ly w i t h the new one.

The space thus vacated in Bui ld ing 23 wi l l give short t ime relief to certain overc rowded departments. Personnel Department w i l l u l t imately be located in this area, g iv ing them a direct l ink w i t h the recept ion area at present undergo ing modernisat ion.

Al l these and other moves involved are being co-ord ina ted by Facilities Planning w h o are evaluat ing people's requirements and w o r k i n g out detai led aspects of the new bui ld ing work .

Al l being we l l , w e hope to have the bu i ld ing comple ted in the spring of 1975.

Preece Payne Partnership are the architects responsible, and W. F. Giles & Sons are our main bu i ld ing contractors.

A Future for our Past A 50-minu te colour f i lm designed to bring home to the indiv idual the ful l s igni f icance of his architectural heritage is part of the Rank Xerox cont r ibut ion to European Archi tectural Heritage Year 1975.

The Company is also sponsor ing a 48-page magazine called European Heritage, six issues of w h i c h w i l l appear dur ing 1 9 7 4 - 7 5 in four ed i t ions : English, French, German and Ital ian.

The international campaign , ini t iated by the Counci l of Europe f o l l o w i n g the success of European Conservat ion Year 1970 , has four main ob jec t ives :

1 . To awaken the interest of the European peoples in their c o m m o n architectural her i tage;

NEW APPOINTMENTS Mike Clibbens is jo in ing the Manufac tur ing Group Staff on March 1 as Control ler Finance & Administ rat ion. He wi l l report to Graham Price, Director of Manufactur ing Informat ion & Contro l .

Finance & Adminis t rat ion func t ions w i th in the Plant w i l l report funct ional ly to Mr C l ibbens ; currently Manager Finance El-Admin is t ra t ion, Mi tche ldean, he wi l l retain responsibi l i ty for the Plant for the t ime being.

His appo in tment is the culminat ion of s igni f icant changes w i th in Manufac tur ing Group Finance & Adminis t ra t ion.

Peter Vince, whose appo in tment as Manager, Special Projects, last autumn was reported in our December issue, has n o w been appointed Chief Accountan t , Mi tcheldean Plant, w i t h effect f rom February 1 last. He cont inues to report to the Manager, Finance & Adminis t rat ion Department.

Peter Wal ton has been appoin ted Manager Inventory Contro l , Manufactur ing Group, w i t h effect f rom February 1 last, to replace Brian Crosby, w h o has taken up an appoin tment w i th another company.

Mr Wal ton , w h o jo ined us in September 1973 as a Programme Manager, now reports to Graham Price.

J o h n Robley Dixon has taken over the product group w h i c h has hi therto been managed by Mr Wa l ton , wh i le J i m Mi tchel l has assumed responsibi l i ty for the product formerly managed by Mr Robley Dixon.

J o h n Hankin, formerly Executive Assistant to Mr Portman, has jo ined the Programme Management team as an Assistant Programme Manager report ing to Mr Mi tche l l .

2. To protect and enhance bui ld ings and areas of architectural and historical interest ;

3. To conserve the character of old t o w n s and v i l lages; and

4. To ensure for ancient bui ld ings a l iv ing role in present-day society.

The Heritage Year in format ion and publ ic i ty campaign , to be conduc ted at internat ional , nat ional and local levels under the slogan 'A Future for our Past', begins this year and reaches its c l imax in 1975.

Nat ional commit tees, backed up by government money and patronage, have been establ ished in European countr ies. Represented on the UK Counc i l , and suppor t ing the

campaign , are Government Departments, industries f rom publ ic and private sectors, business and professional interests, the principal rel igious denominat ions, trade unions and the leading voluntary organisat ions.

A top- leve l international businessmen's commit tee is advis ing on the role of industry in the campaign , and our chairman, Mai Thomas, has been asked to chair th is new body.

A campaign on such an extensive scale gives Rank Xerox, as a mul t i -na t iona l organisat ion, an excel lent oppor tun i t y to demonstrate its responsibi l i ty to the communi t ies w i th in w h i c h it operates.

When Roger Haggett, newly appointed Director of Manufacturing Operations (UK), arrived at Mitcheldean at the start of 1974, one of his immediate tasks was to get to know

personally as many of us as possible. As one way of tackling this challenge, he lunched with managers, and met representatives of the Unions, the Long Service Association and the

Sports & Social Club at an informal get-together on January 4. Here he shakes hands with Jim Mackin (PED), vice-chairman of the TASS Joint Offices Committee (seen left).

When Reg went to the

wedding

There was this lady of 6 5 ; she'd been wa i t ing since 3 pm the previous day, then she col lapsed and never saw the w e d d i n g at al l . '

But for Reg Caldicutt , November 14 was a never - to -be- fo rgo t ten occasion. The only member of the Ross group of the St J o h n Ambu lance Brigade to at tend the w e d d i n g of Princess Anne , he was up at 3 am and on duty outs ide the Gui ldhal l at 8.30. ' M y first casualty occurred an hour later — a lad of nine w h o was crushed in the c r o w d . '

A t 1.15 pm (very precise about t imes is Reg) , he w e n t over to the Abbey where 'I was as near the royal couple as I am to you now. '

After a further spell of du ty at Buck ingham Palace, he and some 3,000 other St J o h n members enjoyed a dinner in the Coldstream Guards Depot.

He go t home around 10 pm, very t ired and glad to have been given the f o l l o w i n g day off to recuperate.

A former 'Desert Rat', Reg has been a PT instructor, a driver for Red & Whi te Services and an RAC patro lman.

L e f t : Reg Caldicutt in the uniform he wore to the wedding. Incidentally, both Reg's sons work at the Plant — Ron in PED and Keith on the 4000 mini line. B e l o w : Jack Osborne, Central Records supervisor, draws the winning tickets for the raffle run by Nurse Miles of Medical Dept. The prizes — Monty, a dog of the Heinz variety, and a dressed doll— were won by Miss L. Davis and Keith Murrow respectively and £130 10 was raised in the process for the Ross Nursing Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade. Nurse Miles, who is superintendent of the Division, said the money will be used to buy uniforms and equipment. Watching the draw are some of the people who kindly helped collect this very useful sum.

On the l ighter side — he's a keen bal l room dancer w i t h three silver cups to his credit.

He jo ined us ten years ago and for the last f e w years he has worked in Sorter Assembly and acted as Safety Officer for Bui ld ing 11 ; he's also one of our Plant First Aiders. Acc idents are for tunately rare, but there are one or t w o in the area w h o have been very glad to have him on hand.

The St J o h n Ambu lance Brigade is his greatest interest. ' I 'm devoted to it,' he to ld us. ' I 've been ten years w i th the Brigade and a First Aider for 15. '

Fetes, ja lopy racing, footba l l , scrambles — they keep Reg on the go th roughou t the year. February marks the beginn ing of the year's duties w i t h at tendance at the Belmont Po in t - to -Po in t . The idea is to provide first aid for the humans, but occasional ly he gives a bit of help w i t h a hoof or t w o I

Current ly the Ross g roup are f u n d -raising for a new ambulance to replace their outdated model . ' I t 's go ing to cost £3 ,500 ful ly equ ipped, ' Reg to ld us. 'We're go ing to be a lot busier w h e n Herefordshire merges w i t h Worcestershire and w e need the ambulance this year. We 've wr i t ten to Blue Peter p rogramme for help, and we're hop ing Rank Xerox wi l l be able to make a cont r ibu t ion to the fund . '

Hardly any event, whether in the Plant generally or in Small Batch in particular, takes place w i t h o u t R o y C h a m b e r l a i n seeing the funny side of it and recording it in his o w n entertaining way.

His cartoons, and drawings (l ike the poppet in our p ic ture) , keep his col leagues smi l ing. They even get a kick ou t of being caricatured w h e n occasion demands.

N o w a member of the Small Batch unit , Roy jo ined us seven years ago. He's Forest born and bred, w h i c h accounts for the fact that brass-banding is in his b lood . He used to play tenor t rombone in the Drybrook band and d id ' the odd solo. '

T h e r e wasn ' t a band to beat us,' he said. ' M i n d you , I'm go ing back some 25 years.'

Today he f inds that al ternat ing shift w o r k and numerous DIY schemes in his home on Ruardean Hi l l , plus a daughter of seven and a toddler son, leave precious litt le t ime for p laying.

'Bu t I'd like to see a w o r k s band formed here. A n d I'd jo in it t oo — if I had the w i n d !'

Recognise J a n e P h i l l i p s ? She's the dark girl in the colour photo enlargement on display in the recept ion area of Bui ld ing 23.

Jane has proved such a g o o d amateur model that qui te a f e w pictures of her have been taken by works photographer Jack Seal, most ly for use by our suppliers as part of their publ ic i ty material at exhib i t ions, etc.

Jane works for J o h n Roberts, Senior Manufac tu r ing Engineer ( M G ) , in Bui ld ing 42 . A former trainee secretary, she is a Londoner w h o has sett led happi ly in Mi tche ldean w i t h her fami ly.

But 1 don ' t miss ou t on the s w i n g i n g life,' she to ld us. 'I o f ten go to London , or to B i rmingham to see my boy f r iend. A g roup of us are buy ing a d inghy so w e can go water -sk i ing on Lake Windermere. ' She's a g o o d swimmer and has her l i fe-saving certi f icate so she w o n ' t m ind the occasional duck ing .

A resourceful gir l , is Jane. Her father o w n s Mi tche ldean Garage and she probably k n o w s more than many girls of her age about w h a t makes a car t ick.

So it's no g o o d a chap pretending someth ing 's w r o n g w i t h the engine, or t ry ing that o ld 'What d 'you k n o w I I've run out of petrol I' l ine w i t h Jane. She'd probably produce a set of tools or w h i p a can of reserve fuel ou t of her shoulderbag.

Jus t one th ing — don ' t rush to ask Jane to cope if you ' re hav ing t rouble start ing your car at the end of the day. Her dad might take a d im v iew !

J o h n T e a g u e doesn' t need to tell tall stories about the one that got a w a y — there's a 30 lb pike that d idn ' t , enshrined in the Club House bar for all to see. 'I took it in 1958 on a 12 lb line w i t h live bait, ' said J o h n , recall ing the details of that never - to-be- forgot ten catch.

A worker on the 4 0 0 0 mini line mechanical run, J o h n has been described as 'one of the top match anglers in the county . ' So it's not surprising that he's w o n the Ang l ing Club's Christmas match a good many t imes, his top we igh t being a record 52 lb 4 o z .

He belongs to f ive angl ing c lubs besides, do ing coarse f ishing (everyth ing in the river except salmon and t rout ) and, in the close season, t rou t f ish ing at C h e w M a g n a .

'I learned to f ish f rom my c o u s i n ; he's a professional — a gi l l ie. He's one of the best k n o w n salmon anglers and he's o f ten appeared on the TV programme " A n g l i n g T o d a y " . '

J o h n ' s seven-year -o ld daughter is keeping up the fami ly t radi t ion t o o ; she caught 33 small ones at her first at tempt.

W h e n not actual ly f ish ing, J o h n is busy help ing to organise matches or preparing tackle. 'We use wasp grubs for some of our bait, ' he said. ' In fact, I'll take a wasp nest of f anybody , free of charge. Just r ing Cinderford 22818 and I'll be a long to f ish 'em out . '

• D I S S S ' ' :

FAMILY MAN 'We always have to buy a suitcase w h e n we' re on hol iday to br ing back the presents. You see, we 've go t six chi ldren and nine grandchi ldren. '

Bill Carpenter, Mach ine Shop inspector at RX Cinderford, was tel l ing us about the week 's hol iday in Majorca that he and his w i fe Ivy (Electrical Sub-assembly) had last November. ' I t was organised by Dot Brooks in 4 0 0 0 Department. There were over 50 of us and w e had a wha le of a week. '

He particularly enjoyed the t r ip to the artificial pearl factory, for in his spare t ime Bill makes artif icial jewel lery himself, on a one-o f f basis, f rom marcasites, cameos and semiprecious stones.

He reached the zenith of this craft, you might say, in 1962 w h e n he made the very first c r o w n for 'M iss Rank, M i tche ldean ' . Fashioned f rom brass and blue velvet, and s tudded w i t h a gross or so of f lashing stones, it graced the head of W e n d y Haile and several subsequent 'M iss Ranks.'

It was dur ing a long spell in hospital w i t h t w o s l ipped discs in 1 9 5 0 that he started the jewel lery hobby , and he has kept it up ever since, t h o u g h n o w 'I on ly do it for f r iends. '

A n inspector for the last 17 years, he also w o r k e d in Salvage Dept. f r om 1950 to 1956 . 'I was in the f i rm's on ly skitt les team in those days, ' he says.

Bi/I Carpenter (Quality Assurance) and his wife Ivy (Electrical Sub-assembly). Ivy is wearing a brooch made by Bill

It was in those early ' f i f t ies that he and Ivy ran the 70-s t rong Hi l ldenians Jazz Band in C inder fo rd ; most ly y o u n g folk, they w o n national jazz band championsh ips and ful f i l led engagements all over the country , w i t h Bill on the drums and Ivy as wardrobe mistress,

'I used to play the mil i tary side drums w h e n I was in the RAF too and I be longed to the band w h i c h later became famous as the Squadronnaires, ' he to ld us.

Today the drums no longer cal l . ' I 'm secretary of the social c lub at the Lion Hotel in Cinderford and that, plus my jewel lery work , takes up all my leisure t ime these days . '

The fami ly must take up a bit of t ime too . T w o of their daughters w o r k at the Plant — Janet Ensor (Purchase) and J i l l Drew (Engineer ing) and their respective husbands, Wal ly and Ken (bo th Product ion C o n t r o l ) ; so do their other three s o n s - i n - l a w — M ike Keen (Wages) , Dave Morr is (Finance and Admin is t ra t ion) and Brian Wragg (Engineer ing D O ) .

Their on ly son, Ted, w h o obta ined a B.Sc ( H o n s ) at Manchester Universi ty, is a Manu fac tu r ing Group Programme Co-ord inator .

A lso on the payrol l are three of Ivy's brothers — Bill ( M a c h i n e Shop, RX Cinder fo rd) , Charlie (Supp ly Centre) and Les W e y m a n ( 4 0 0 0 Assembly ) .

So there's stil l p lenty of ' fami ly fee l ing ' at the Plant I

Three of Bill and Ivy's children - Jill Drew (Engineering Records). Ted (also known as Eddie) Carpenter (Programme Co-ordinator. MG), and Janet Ensor (Purchase). On the far right: Bill's crowning achievement I The 'Miss RPI' had to be concealed as the Plant ceased to be part of Rank Precision Industries before the first coronation took place.

SP®RTS & S&CIAL CLUB New President General Manager Ron Morfee has kindly accepted appo in tment as president of the Sports & Social Club in succession to Peter Sa lmon, w h o has rel inquished the post fo l l ow ing his move to Manufac tu r ing Group staff.

On the Brink The offer of the use of a heated indoor s w i m m i n g pool in close proximity to the Plant has aroused enough interest to warrant the sett ing up of a steering commit tee.

They are look ing into the possibil i t ies in con junct ion w i t h the owners of the pool w i t h a v iew to fo rm ing a s w i m m i n g c lub.

Accent on Comedy The Variety Club is go ing ahead w i th plans for a s h o w at Mi tche ldean in Apr i l . Ken Farmborough tells u f that the accent w i l l be on comedy, and items wi l l include a sketch wr i t ten for and performed by the Medical Centre I

After the spring show, a summer concert is a possibi l i ty, featur ing a tour ing regimental band.

Dur ing January t w o shows were given at the Miners Welfare Hall , Cinderford — one for the senior citizens and one at the Labour Party's party.

Chess Contests February 28 is the f inal day for the complet ion of the second round in both the Wickstead Shield and Portman Cup chess contests.

The t w o contests wi l l run concurrent ly as long as this proves feasible. 'We're t ry ing to keep it mov ing , despite shift work , ' said J o h n Johnson , hon. secretary of the Forest Rooks Chess Club.

Dancing Club The Dancing Club are n o w embarked on their w in te r /spr ing season w i t h beginners classes f rom 8 to 8.45 pm and intermediate f rom 8.45 to 9.30 pm on Fridays, w i t h hardly a break unti l the last wal tz on May 3 1 .

A sad note — c lub members w ish to express their regret at the death of commit tee member Clarry Ward (Mach ine Shop) in January. Ivy Newman and David Markey represented the c lub at the funeral to w h i c h members sent a wreath .

Len Jones (4000 Dept) has n o w jo ined the c lub commit tee.

Free Range Golf Those sw ing ing sessions in the Social Centre w e wro te about have f in ished and golfers are get t ing out on the range.

Drybrook Rugby Club have k indly a l lowed the Golf Society the use of their p i tch for tu i t ion and practice, and to avoid a carve-up the golfers are dr iv ing off mats generously provided by Uniroyal .

Just to make sure the vi l lage isn't showered on Sunday morn ings

f rom 10 am onwards by little golf balls, on ly 7 and 9 irons are being used.

Unfor tunate ly we ' re losing qui te a f e w balls,' said Graham Gardner of Dev. Lab., 'so if anyone has any o ld or unused ones they don ' t wan t , w i l l they please let me or any other member of the commi t tee have them. '

By the way , these sessions are not only for novices — golfers w i t h experience are w e l c o m e too .

A b o v e : Tea was in the self-service cafeteria, but there was no lack of willing helpers to look after our little guests on January 19. B e l o w : Despite being confined to a wheelchair, this young fellow seemed to be having a great time — and no wonder, with all those pretty girls around!

[ £ J j g ^ Tivo in Transport As the end of December d rew up, t w o Transport personalit ies parked their vehicles for the last t ime at Mi tcheldean.

Sid W o o d , the man on our min ibus, came to us 1 8 J years ago ' w h e n Sam N e w m a n was still do ing a bit of mal t ing. We had f ive cars, t w o vans and one lorry, and 'Transport Dept ' consisted of me alone.

'I used to prefer long-d is tance dr iv ing, but I go t used to the minibus. Eleven trips round the Plant, eight to and f rom Cinderford, every day. I a lways turned my radio on at 11.30 am, just in t ime to tune in to the J i m m y Young programme — I th ink it's very g o o d these days.'

Norah, his teddybear mascot, must be very reliable. Sid has w o n the Company's Safe Driver's A w a r d , for drivers having an accident- f ree year, ever since it was inst i tuted.

Years of si t t ing behind the whee l have been k n o w n to broaden more than one's out look, but Sid reckons

that sk i t t l ing, and look ing after his t w o gardens, give him all the exercise he needs.

Certainly the garden in Mi tche ldean High Street br ings a splash of colour to the vi l lage every summer. ' I 've some 4 0 0 dahlias — used to s h o w them all over the place, inc lud ing Chel tenham T o w n Hall S h o w . Some say it's second on ly to Chelsea. I've w o n loads of cups. There's no secret. Buy g o o d plants and feed 'em wel l . '

A n d our other Transport personali ty ? Chauffeur Maur ice Jones w h o , a l though not a Long Service member, has worked at the Plant for 1 2 years.

' I 've never k n o w n either of them be late for work , ' said J o h n Not ley, Assistant Manager, Transport & Mechanica l Handl ing .

A former long-d is tance lorry driver too , Maur ice first worked in Heat Treatment. He to ld u s : 'I came to Mi tche ldean in order to get off the road 1'

Joan and Maurice Jones at ttieir Drybrool( home.

But before long he was back behind the whee l , col lect ing sub-cont rac t goods for us. He also s tood in for the late Ivor Boddy, works chauffeur, tak ing over f rom him on his ret irement.

Sports — rugger, soccer, box ing , speedway racing — are Maurice's main interests; he and his w i fe Joan (Electrical Sub-assembly) and his t w o daughters have of ten been to N e w p o r t to enjoy at first hand the h igh-geared thri l ls of the track.

To ensure that both Sid and Maur ice have a happy ' run in for their ret irement. Transport have been organis ing a social evening in their honour , and presentat ions are being made to them by their col leagues, and to Sid by the LSA.

Sid—a man with VISION. He and three other pensioners who live near enough not to be dependent on transport, are helping out on a part-time basis, putting up notices, distributing the magazine, etc.

ROY MEREDITH

We were sorry to learn of the death of Roy Meredi th on January 10 at the age of 52.

Roy came to us in 1 9 5 3 ; he worked first in the Paint Shop, then at Litson's (case manufac tur ing) , and subsequently in Progress. In 1966 he transferred to assembly w o r k and was in 4000 Dept (main l ine) just prior to his death.

He also made a considerable contr ibut ion to life at the Plant in his capacity as a member of the Safety Commit tee and a steward on the buses. A n active union member, he was an A U E W shop s teward and served on the commit tee of the union's Mi tcheldean branch.

We extend our sympathy to his ^ w i d o w and fami ly.

Spring Meetings When spr ing comes, thoughts of LSA members tu rn towards the annual dinner. This year i t w i l l be on May 3 at the Chase Hotel , Ross-on-Wye. The annual general meet ing is scheduled to take place on Apr i l 29, and nominat ions fo r the commi t tee were being received as w e w e n t t o press. Doris Barker (secretary) and Jackie Smith (assistant secretary) are unable to accept nominat ion th is year as they are both due to ret ire before Chr istmas, having w o r k e d in harness in the cause of the LSA fo r the last t w o years.

Champion Lads On the left you see five victorious smiles and their owners, the Rank Xerox US Residents Table Tennis finalists — Keith Bradley (Design), John George and Roger Ridler (PED), Robbie Robinson and Robin Berks (Production Control). The boys (!) from Mitcheldean resisted the oriental and continental challenge to lift both the doubles and singles championships. Roger was singles champion, and John and Keith formed a winning pair, with Robbie and Robin as runners-up. The trophies were presented by Horace Becker -who is Vice-President of the Corporate Research B Engineering Staff at Xerox.

HOME MARKET Is this what some overseas visitor might expect to see, on hearing we had acquired a Terrapin office building ?

Nice one Tetry!

Terry Quartermaine's recent appointment as Manager Material Control for the Lille Plant is un ique in that he is so far the only departmental manager f rom Mitcheldean to take up a first line management posi t ion w i t h one of our newest manufactur ing plants across the Channel. Terry started his career in the sphere of product ion control as a progress chaser at Gloster Aircraft, where, incidental ly, he go t to k n o w J i m Cannon. He later moved to Smiths Industries and, f o l l o w i n g in the wake of another Product ion Control col league, Ernie W o o d , came to us in 1964 as senior provisioning off icer. From this posi t ion, he rose to become Manager of the w h o l e Product ion Control func t ion at Mi tche ldean. It must have been grat i fy ing to h im that he f in ished his tour of duty here w i th one day in excess of his 55-day inventory. As J o h n M a c D o n a l d , Manager, Special Projects, put it at the farewell dinner w h i c h Terry gave for all those direct ly responsible to him : 'Nice one, Terry !' Before f ly ing out in mid-January to jo in his w i fe and 14-year -o ld daughter at their new home in Lille, Terry did a crash course in

French. His appo in tment is un ique in yet another r e s p e c t — he alone of the first line managers at Lille is an Engl ishman, albeit one w i t h a Swiss w i fe , wh i le his team is being recruited f rom among the local popu la t ion .

As for the plant itself at Lille, this is coming on apace ; the main wal ls and roof ing are up and w o r k on the f loors was commenc ing as w e w e n t to press. M e a n w h i l e our init ial team — Plant General Manager Louis Couque and other first line managers inc lud ing Terry — are w o r k i n g in temporary off ices adjacent to the site.
