HA202—LOWERMIDHUMANITIESMUSIC ThemusiccomponentofthelowermidHumanitiesprogramfollowsthesameguidingprinciplesoftheprepyearcurriculum:developperformerswhoareabletoconstructindependentlyauthenticmusicalinterpretations,invariousstyles,basedonmulti-disciplineinformationprovidedbytheHumanitiesProgram.Consequently,itoffersasimilarweeklyroutineoflessons,musichistoryand/ortheoryclasses,andensemblerehearsals.Twoweeklylessonsprovidestudentswithin-depthinstructioninthefollowinginstruments:bass(acousticandelectric),cello,clarinet,drums,flute,Frenchhorn,guitar(electricandacoustic),harp,oboe,piano,jazzpiano,percussion,saxophone,trombone,trumpet,tuba,violin,viola,andvoice.Themusicappreciationcomponentwillfocuson19th-CenturyRomanticismandNationalism,Impressionism,Atonalmusic,Serialism,Jazz,andPopularmusic.Theimpactofthefirstandsecondworldwars,theRussianRevolution,andthe’60saroundtheworldwilloffernaturalandmeaningfulconversationpointswiththeotherHumanitiesdisciplines.Studentswillbeassignedtoappropriatemusicalensembles,dependingontheirchoiceofinstrument:theHotchkissOrchestra,theHotchkissJazzEnsemble,andtheHotchkissChorus.Minimalmusicalproficiencyisrequired,sobeginnerstudentsmaynotbeallowedtojoinanensemble.StudentspursuingthelowermidmusicHumanitiesprogramwillbeexpectedtoengageinregularandrigorouspracticeinordertoperforminclass,humanitiesseminars,andregular,scheduledstudentrecitals.StudentswillberequiredtoutilizetheirmusicalperformanceskillsinordertoillustrateandsupporttopicsstudiedintheHumanitiesprogram.

Thiscourse,taughtduringonemarkingperiod,willteachtheparticipantstheskillsandknowledgeneededtopreventandrespondtoaquaticemergencies.Thecoursecontentandactivitiesprepareourcandidatestorecognizeandrespondquicklyandeffectivelytoemergenciesandtopreventdrowningandinjuries.UponcompletionofthiscoursethesuccessfulparticipantwillbeabletoworkasacertifiedRedCrossLifeguardatTheHotchkissSchoolandotherfacilitieswherethiscertificationisrecognized.Thiscourseisnottaughtforacademiccredit.Tobeeligibleforthelifeguard-trainingcourse,thecandidatemustbe15yearsofageonorbeforethefinalscheduledsessionofthiscourseandmustcompletesomeswimmingprerequisites.Classsizeislimitedtoapproximately10participantsforeachinstructor.Theclasswillmeetthreeeveningsaweekfrom6:00-6:45p.m.andonatleastthreeSundaysagreeduponbytheparticipantsinthecourseandtheinstructors.AnOxygenAdministrationmodulemaybeofferedinadditiontothiscourseattheinstructor’sdiscretion.
