200 Acting Stage I (Grades 2-4)A drama class for younger campers. Basic acting techniques will be introduced, and small plays, often written by the campers, will be rehearsed and performed at Carnival Showcase. Ability to read is strongly suggested.

201 Advanced Illusion (Grades 5 and above)The Magic is you! This class will focus on major illusions, incorporating music and performance techniques. Sleight-of-hand as well as small-illusion experience required.

202/252 Clowning and Circus Skills(#202 — Grades 2-4/#252 — Grades 5 and above)Brighten up your days and ours — become a clown! Join the clowns of Creative Summer, and learn how to prepare a routine, design a costume, do make-up, and perform before an audience. A must CLASS for the clown in all of us!

203 Curtain Call — The Musical(Grades 5 and above - Double Period)Be part of a production company, from auditioning for a part to performing at Carnival Showcase. This two-period class provides an opportunity to work on a larger-scale production. Campers in the Musical will need to be available one day after camp during the third week of each session for a dress rehearsal. Attendance for the entire session is required. The Musical will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on the last Thursday of each session at Carnival Showcase.

204 Improvisation (Grades 5 and above)While playing improvisation games, campers will learn the art of performing in an unscripted scene.

205 Magic Learn basic magic tricks for beginners. Dazzle your friends with entertaining tricks that are easy to learn.

206 Playwriting and Performing(Grades 5 and above)In this exciting class campers will create and perform an original production.

207 PuppetryCombines the best of Creative Summer – your imagination is the limit in this class! Write your own script, create, design and build your puppet characters. Set the stage and perform your show on our very own professional puppet theater!

208/258 Razzle Dazzle — Theatrical Make-up (#208 — Grades 2-4/#258 — Grades 5 and above)Create characters using your face as the canvas. Learn to use theatrical make-up to create animals, people, aliens, horror effects, and other fun projects. (Please advise of any make-up allergies.)

209 Rising Stars (Grades 2-4 - Double Period)Through play production this class opens the magical world of dramatic arts. For two periods young campers are introduced to the dramatic arts, culminating in a musical production. 404 Fencing (NEW) Sometimes dubbed “physical Chess” this class develops patience, determination, discipline and the spirit of healthy competition. Campers will learn basic fencing techniques as well as the rules and etiquette of this modern sport. (All equipment is provided.)

405 Field HockeyCampers will develop fundamental skills and techniques while having fun and improving their game. For players of all levels. (Sneakers 4)

406/456 Golf Like a Tiger(#406 — Grades 2-3/#456 — Grades 4 and above)All levels, all ages. Learn the fundamentals of golf: grip, aim, posture, and stance (including putting chipping and full swing). This program uses the Almost Golf Ball, the practice ball designed to be safe for children and easy to hit. All equipment will be supplied. Move over, Tiger! PLEASE NOTE: THIS CLASS IS TAUGHT BY TOTAL GOLF ADVENTURES, AN OUTSIDE ORGANIZATION, ON THE HOLTON-ARMS CAMPUS. AN ADDI-TIONAL FEE OF $10 PER DAY WILL BE CHARGED TO YOUR FINAL BALANCE DUE FOR ALL CAMPERS ENROLLED IN THIS CLASS. NO REFUND AFTER THE SECOND DAY OF CAMP.

407 Great Outdoors (Grades 4 and above — Double Period)Hiking, exploring, fishing, plant identification, and first aid are only a few of the activities planned. Field trips and off-campus outings are important parts of this offering. Please note this class is a double period. The Great Outdoors class will no longer be off campus during lunch and lunchtime entertainment. (Sneakers )

408 Kids YogaThis class integrates yoga poses, flowing sequences, breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and creative reflection.

409 LacrosseThis fun beginner course will focus on skills such as catching and throwing the ball as well as knowledge of the game. For safety reasons a soft ball and plastic/ wood sticks will be used. (Sneakers 4)

410 Masters of TennisJoin Holton’s own varsity tennis coach and 2008 All-Met Coach of the Year, Yann Auzoux, to master the fundamentals of the game through targeted games, drills, and conditioning exercises. Campers will have the opportunity to acquire sound technique and a solid competitive edge. Campers will be grouped by ability and challenged to improve. Tennis shoes must be worn. Tennis racquet is also required. Please remember to label the racquet with the camper’s name. (Sneakers 4)

411 Outdoor GamesAn opportunity to develop some new skills, or to practice some old ones. From Ultimate Frisbee and Kickball, to Capture the Flag and Flag Football, the emphasis is on sportsmanship and having fun!

412 Pom-Pom ClassHave fun and learn basic pom-pom moves and dances! Pom-poms provided. Perform at half-time during the Carnival Showcase basketball games. (Sneakers 4)

413 Recreational Swimming(This class has a required swim test on the first day of class)Swimming just for fun. This activity is highly supervised by certified instructors, but it is not instructional. Bathing suits and towels are required. Please Note: This is an indoor pool, and the shallow end is 4 feet deep.

414 Return to Sherwood—Archery(Grades 4 and above)Young Robin Hoods will be introduced to the sport of archery by a certified instructor. Bows and arrows will be provided and are of proper length and weight according to the specifications of the Camp Archery Association. (Sneakers 4)

415 Rhythmic GymnasticsA certified rhythmic gymnastics instructor will introduce students to this beautiful sport. Gymnasts will learn to execute elements from different categories of body movement, using five different apparatus: rope, hoop, ribbon, ball, and clubs.

416 SoftballTake me out to the ball game. Students will learn proper techniques in all three areas of the game: pitching, fielding, and hitting. (Sneakers 4)

417 Softball/IndoorStudents learn basic baseball/softball skills using an indoor safety ball. Rules, hitting, pitching, fielding, and running will be emphasized through daily games. (Sneakers 4 No black soles)

418 Stroke ClinicA swimming course for older, experienced swimmers that focuses on developing proper technique of starts, turns, and the four major strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. This course is designed for campers who are on a swim team (or plan to join one) and would like extra practice and instruction. To enroll, campers must be able to swim four lengths of the pool, freestyle and backstroke, without stopping. Taught by certified instructors. Bathing suits and towels are required.

419 Swim Like a Fish (Instructional Swimming)Small-group instruction in basic strokes such as the crawl and the backstroke. Campers will be grouped and taught by ability from Beginning through Intermediate by certified instructors. Bathing suits and towels are required.

420/470 Tae Kwon Do—Self Defense Course(#420 Beginning/#470 Intermediate — Gold Belt and above)Students will be introduced to this form of karate. Objectives include the development of agility, balance, discipline, endurance, rhythm, strength, and self-confidence. This program includes working to a higher belt.

421 Total Body ConditioningCurrent dance trends, aerobic dance, strength training, and flexibility — all set to the latest musical tunes — using steps, fitness balls, and weights. (Sneakers 4)

501 Basketry (Grades 5 and above)A-tisket, a-tasket, a green and yellow basket. A-tisket, a-tasket, create your own basket in any size, shape, or color. Experience the fun of basket weaving. Useful baskets with handles or no handles, small baskets or large baskets, decorative baskets for special occasions, such as the pumpkin-patch lady for Halloween or snow-folk for winter fun.

502 CalligraphyLearn a new way of writing and creative lettering. Campers will be able to use their skills to liven up invitations, posters, and scrapbooks.

503 Card Making (NEW)(Grades 5 and above)Make your own greeting cards like the ones at the store. Learn how to use die cuts, brads, ribbons and much more to make these cards. All type of holiday cards, birthday, graduation and friendship cards will be made with ease. Make a gift box to hold your set of cards. Never again will you pay for a Hallmark card.

504/554 Cartooning (#504 — Grades 2-4/#554 — Grades 5 and above)Ideas for funny characters, both human and animal, will take shape through comic strips and caricatures.

505/555 Ceramic Arts (#505 – Grades 2-4/#555 – Grades 5 and above)Learn to create various clay objects with the coil, slab, and pinch-pot methods. All masterpieces will be glazed and fired in the kiln.

506 Crafts WorkshopCrafts from around the world. Papier mâché, mobiles, and mask-making are but a few of the crafts that may be taught.

509 Digital Photography(Grades 4 and above)Everyone is talking about digital photography! And for good reason. Digital photography is fun, fast, and easier than you might think. Campers will use their digital cameras to capture images and explore techniques for editing and enhancing their images on a computer.

510/560 Drawing(#510 — Grades 2-4/#560 — Grades 5 and above)Campers will be instructed in a variety of techniques including still life and figure drawing as well as portrait and landscape perspectives. A wide variety of media will be explored, such as pencils, pen and ink, chalk pastels, and charcoal.

511 Doll and Toy Making (Grades 4 and above)Have fun; make your own doll or toy. Let your imagination run wild and create a sock doll, a super cute and cuddly stuffed animal, or a whatchamacallit/whatsit/thingamabob/doodad. Bring your ideas to sew, stuff, wrap, tie, mold, sculpt, paint or glue your way to a one-of-a-kind creation.

515/565 Jewelry Workshop(#515 — Grades 2-4/#565 — Grades 5 and above)Age-old methods of jewelry-making will be combined with contemporary materials and ideas.

516/566 Material Girl (AKA Cloth and Clothing)(#516 — Grades 2-4/#556 — Grades 5 and above)Tie-dyeing, cloth painting, and appliqué are some of the projects that may be used to create expressive designs on various fabrics and articles of clothing.

517/567 Painting(#517 — Grades 2-4/#567 — Grades 5 and above)Move over, Picasso: this class is about painting! Tempera and other painting materials will be used to create larger-than-life masterpieces! Bring a smock — we’re painting!

518 Photography (Grades 4 and above)Learn to use a 35mm camera and to develop and print black and white film. A 35 mm film camera is required (point and shoot or SLR). Campers are responsible for providing their own film (four rolls Kodak T-Max or Tri-X). The Intermediate course is limited to those students with previous darkroom experience. Please be advised that you will be working in a darkroom with chemicals used to develop film. Camera and film are required on the first day.

519 Pottery (Grades 5 and above)Learn how to throw a pot, using an electric wheel. Create and decorate plates, jars, and bowls. The Intermediate class is offered for those who have taken pottery before. All masterpieces are glazed and fired in the kiln. (Class size is limited. If you are interested, mark this as your first choice.)

520/570 Printmaking Class(#520 — Grades 2-4/#570 — Grades 5 and above) This exciting class will focus on the world of printmaking, exploring a variety of methods and materials from soft-cut linoleum, styrofoam, to gadgets, fish printing and more. Students will not only produce signed and numbered prints but also original greeting cards and stationary.

521 Quilting (Prerequisite: Beginning Sewing)Simple strip-piecing, appliqué, and hand-quilting techniques will be covered (using embroidery hoops only — no quilting frames). Participants will work on a small project such as a baby quilt, wall hanging, or piece of wearable art.

522 Sewing (Grades 4 and above)Campers will learn how to use a sewing machine and will design and sew their own projects such as hair scrunchies, pillows, shorts, and dresses.

602 Creative Publishing (Grades 4 and above)Learn how to use the computer to create a wide range of wonderful items, such as calendars, cards, banners, booklets, flyers, signs, labels, certificates, postcards, etc. Campers will learn how to use Microsoft Publisher, and to properly download images, including photos.

603/653 Fun with French(#603 — Grades 2-4/#653 — Grades 5 and above)Join this returning class and experience a little bit of the Left Bank here in Bethesda. Activities may include simple conversation, games, songs, and basic food dishes. Allons-y!

604/654 Fun with Spanish(#604 — Grades 2-4/#654 — Grades 5 and above)Join this returning class and experience the cultures of Spain, Mexico, and other Spanish-speaking countries. Activities may include simple conversation, games, songs, and basic food dishes. OLE’!

605 Games, Games, and More GamesFamily-room fun playing board games such as backgammon, chess, checkers, and cards will excite every camper.

607 MathmagicDiscover the magic of numbers, and become your own Mathmagician. Crack codes, discover math facts, and solve complicated math puzzles while having the most fun!

608 Nature’s WayA study of nature on the Holton-Arms campus. This beginning ecology and environmental course is designed to give campers new awareness of the relationship between living and non-living things. This is truly a discovery course.

609 NewspaperA chance to discover and report on the happenings at camp. Be instrumental in writing and publishing the camp newspaper. Campers should be able and willing to spend time writing stories for the paper.

659 Advanced Newspaper (For Grades 4 and above and at least one previous session of Newspaper.)This advanced class is a unique opportunity for the seasoned camp reporter to stretch his or her reporting skills a few columns further. 612 Rippin’ TunesCreate your own CD from start to finish, including the cover and the insert, with all your favorite tunes. You will learn to manipulate photos and graphics, rip MP3s from your own CD collection, and burn them onto CDs.

613 Science OlympiadGo for the Gold — be a member of our Olympic team — in science, that is! Participate in events such as bridge-building, the soup-can race, science crime busters, the super egg drop, and the great freeze machine.

Hands-on projects such as Chinese calligraphy, family trees, and paper folding with help to tie the Chinese culture together. A mini Chinese New Year and Spring Festival will be the finishing touches to this exciting new class.
