From the Executive Director

This year is one in which we have several opportunities to examine the entire Shelton organization. Each will provide great benefit to Shelton, allowing us to reflect on Shelton’s amazing journey and, more importantly, to make plans and projections that will allow us to dream and reach our next horizon.

The first, and most major, is our reaccreditation process with Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS). Shelton first joined ISAS in 2004-05, after an extensive self-study and application process. We repeat many parts of that self-study this

year, culminating with an on-site visit in Fall 2013 by ISAS committee members who volunteer to help each member organization undergo assessment. We are currently gathering feedback from our Shelton constituents – parents, faculty, staff, and board. Each has been invited to participate in a survey, in which we examine our strengths and opportunities for improvement. In addition, committees are meeting throughout the year, gathering documentation of how we do things at Shelton and providing feedback to ISAS. Working committees are reviewing the following areas: Personnel and Administration, Purpose / Goals / Philosophy, School Community, Academic and Student Programs, Governance, and Finance / Business Management / Facilities. We embrace the process, because it helps us identify the best practices for our organization. Shelton also benefits greatly from ISAS membership through professional networking, training, conferences, and student events like the annual ISAS Arts Festival.

The second opportunity is our recent participation with the Dallas Morning News’ Best Places to Work survey. Shelton again joined the ranks as one of the Top 100 Best Places to Work in the Metroplex. Please read more about the award in our Accolades section, page 15.

The third opportunity comes in January 2013, when our entire staff will examine our core values during our scheduled in-service.

A fourth opportunity happens in January, when our Board of Trustees teams up with central administrators to develop some strategic plans for the next five years.

I am so proud and grateful of the work being done by Shelton School, our Evaluation Center, the Speech / Language / Hearing Clinic, and our Outreach / Training Center. These opportunities allow us to grow stronger and ensure the future of Shelton. I welcome your ideas as we continue to Engage, Encourage, and Enrich life at Shelton.

Gene & Jerry Jones Family Dining Hall

Over the summer, Shelton officially named the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Dining Hall. A special plaque, acknowledging our leadership supporters, was designed and placed in front of the renovated dining hall and new state-of-the-art kitchen. Shelton thanks our donors and the entire Jones family for making this facility a reality for our Shelton

community! A reception honoring major donors was held November 14.

Development Doings

Supporting Shelton

Since its founding in 1976, Shelton School has benefited from the generous support of its entire community, enabling the school to remain true to its mission of educating students who learn differently.

Shelton has a long-standing tradition of generosity. We welcome the participation of parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, alumni, staff, and other friends in the life of the Shelton community. Whether it is volunteering to help in the classroom, participating in an event, or contributing your time and creativity, we appreciate your involvement.

This past year, our community demonstrated its commitment to Shelton by generously supporting our Annual Fund, Endowment, Stampede Auction, and other special projects. Your support helps make Shelton exceptional in every way, and we are grateful that you are a part of our community.

Endowment Campaign – Assuring the FutureShelton is currently conducting a $10,000,000 Endowment Campaign – Assuring the Future. Growth of the Shelton School Endowment Fund is one of the school’s highest priorities. With a larger endowment, Shelton will have additional financial resources to:

gAttract and retain the best teachers for our studentsgProvide financial aid to needy studentsgOffer enhanced programs and improved facilities for our students gContinue our community outreach programs and research

An investment in Shelton’s Endowment Fund will help guarantee that Shelton is here not only for those who need us today, but more importantly, for future generations to come. Your contribution to Shelton’s Endowment Fund is a true endorsement of our mission and an ever-lasting form of financial support.

The Development Office would be delighted to meet with you to answer any questions or discuss endowment opportunities. Please call Theresa Bruno at Ext. 2230 or email [email protected] for further information.

It has been a pleasure to serve as this past year’s Annual Fund Parent Co-Chairs. We could not have had the success without the generous contributions of each and every supporter of the Annual Fund. We raised a record-breaking $647,694 in contributions! On behalf of the Shelton community, we express our deepest appreciation for each and every supporter who helped achieve this success.

Sincerely,

Kathy and Kevin Hanrahan Gary Kennedy and Michele ValdezEmily (2017) Ben (2018) Isabel (2017)

2012-2013 Light the Way Annual Fund Drive

Parent Co-Chairs Jennifer and Joe Clifford and Laura and G. Ellison Hurt

Goal: $650,000 and 100% parent participation

The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of Shelton’s fundraising efforts, and everyone in the community is encouraged to participate. Gifts to Shelton’s Annual Fund help bridge the gap between tuition income and the actual cost of a Shelton education. While tuition to attend Shelton is substantial, it covers only 79% of the actual cost of educating each student. Contributions to the Annual Fund help make up the difference. Make your gift today to Shelton’s Light the Way Annual Fund Drive and help secure more bright futures.

Outreach / Training Offerings

The Alabama State Department of Education (SDOE) decided that it wanted to serve students with dyslexia and related disorders within the public school system. Seeing the teachers as their greatest resource, the department sought training that would empower selected teachers to serve those students. As of July 2012, 101 teachers have been trained or are in training through the

SDOE program to provide therapy level training in multisensory structured language (MSL) education.

Current research tells us that if students are given strong, structured core reading instruction, fewer will struggle with reading. If those who struggle receive short term, small group instruction in their area of difficulty, fewer will need intensive small group instruction. That intensive small group instruction is what we refer to as MSL education. Following that logic, if teachers have the knowledge and skills to deliver the intensive MSL intervention, they can also address the needs of the students who need basic instruction and those who need short term support.

In the summer of 2010, Shelton Outreach/Training entered into a contract with the State Department of Education in Alabama to train teachers to the level of therapists in MSL education. This training was offered to teachers across the state. At this time there are three cohorts representing 39 different school districts in Alabama who have received training from Shelton.

To assess the impact of these teachers on their school communities, the first State Department Cohort was asked to complete a survey at the end of the second year. They were asked how many students received the intensive intervention

from them and how many students had received short-term support from them. We also asked if they had delivered in-service instruction to their colleagues and if they had implemented any programs on their campuses. Finally we asked how many students had received support based on those in-service trainings and programs.

First, let us consider the impact of the training on the colleagues of those trained.

Teachers in the initial cohort 23

Teachers receiving in-service training from those teachers 612

The results on student impact were astonishing! The 23 therapist candidates from that first cohort reported the following:

Students receiving intensive intervention 148

Students receiving short term support 749

Students receiving support resulting from in-services provided 2738

Total students receiving support impacted by MSL training 3635

The state invested in the intensive training of 23 teachers. That investment would appear to be a solid one! Within 24 months of beginning their training, on average, each of the teachers had impacted the professional knowledge of 26.6 other teachers and impacted the learning of 158 children. The number that we will never know is the number of students who never knew failure because their teachers are more informed and more knowledgeable.

Exciting Outreach Efforts Train Teachers and Serve Students

The Shelton Outreach Center, which was begun in 1991, has been offering services stateside and globally for 36 years. In some ways Shelton is better known internationally and nationally

than in our local community. Shelton School is respected by the professional community as a leader in the field, and the Shelton Outreach / Training Center is increasingly called upon to take The Shelton Way to communities that do not have many services for students with learning differences.

Internationally Shelton has taken the Montessori Applied to Children At Risk (MACAR) training to Canada, China, Australia, and Denmark. Presentations on Learning Differences and Language Therapy have been given in Brazil and Spain. For the last three years Joyce Pickering, Shelton Executive Director Emerita and Nancy Coffman, Director of Shelton Outreach / Training, have been consulting with the Benjamin Franklin International School (BFIS) in Barcelona, Spain. BFIS, a school of almost 600 students, has students from all over the world. They teach in English, Spanish and Catalan. As with every school, BFIS has bright students with learning differences. They wish to offer an effective program for all students; hence, the arrangement with Shelton to teach their faculty about dyslexia and related disorders. Establishing a Shelton Scholars program and a Teacher Training Institute are under consideration. Their ultimate goal is to help students throughout Barcelona and provide a demonstration center for Europe.

In the US, Shelton staff have been to almost every state giving workshops, trainings, speaking at conferences and seminars. A ground-breaking training is being delivered by Nancy Coffman in the State of Alabama (see above). The Alabama State Director of Special Education has stated the goal of having an Academic Language Therapist in every school in Alabama. Nancy has trained 100 teachers over the last 3 years and is involved in the fourth year of training. This is a huge effort, as every trainee must have 200 hours of coursework and 700 hours of supervised practicum. The practice must be observed 10 times, so Nancy and other trained staff members at Shelton review tapes of the trainees delivering the instruction to students before they are approved for certification.

Nancy and her colleagues in Alabama presented the results of this training effort at the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) on October 25 in Baltimore. This presentation will also be given at the Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE) conference in November. This training could be a model for the country and other states are now asking for information about the procedures necessary to set up such a program.

Joyce and Nancy also presented Shelton Multisensory Teaching at the IDA conference. Other presentations have been made in Midland, Houston, Keller and Santa Fe. Other presentations are scheduled in Portland, Oregon, Little Rock, Arkansas, Alaska and Florida.

At Shelton the staff runs regular training courses in Early Childhood Montessori, Elementary Montessori, Montessori Applied to Children at risk (MACAR), Sequential English Education (SEE), Shelton Academic Language Approach, and Testing. Teachers and therapists from Shelton receive further trainings in these courses and teachers from across the country register for these courses as well. Shelton also offers the Shelton Scholars program, which is language therapy provided on Saturday mornings in the fall and spring and in the summer during summer school. John Hodges is the Supervisor of the Scholars program. In this program students receive three hours of individualized and intensive help on reading, writing and spelling. Students from private and public schools who need this type of help have attended this program for their full remediation.

In 2010-11 Shelton collaborated with the Church of the Incarnation in Dallas to set up a Scholars summer program and an in-school program at J.W. Ray in Dallas ISD. This initiative was funded by the church and the Boone Family Foundation with Cynthia Yung as Executive Director. Forty percent of the students in this elementary school were not reading at grade level. All teachers and volunteers from the church were given workshops in teaching the SEE reading approach. Results in the first year indicated a significant improvement in the reading of students in the school. This study continues this year with Shelton supervisor Ellie Halpin helping teachers with implementation.

Another new effort by Shelton is a collaboration with Literacy Instruction for Texas, an adult literacy program. In the summer of 2012 designated deliverers of the SEE program received training in the approach. In September the pilot program began with a day session, supervised by Shelton supervisor Melinda Hardin and a night session supervised by Shelton teachers and supervisor Libby Evans. Lisa Hembry, Executive Director of LIFT, has provided the leadership for this effort, and teachers Cheryl Parker and Karen Guida have demonstrated remarkable dedication and skill. The plan is for this program to continue and perhaps expand, while the staff is trained to the Instructor Level and prepared to assume full responsibility for the program.

Thousands of students outside Shelton have been helped because Shelton board, administration and staff have shared the resources and knowledge that we have been blessed to receive. We are grateful for Dr. June Ford Shelton’s vision, which remains to this day.

The Speech / Language / Hearing Clinic had another great summer providing therapy not only to Shelton students, but also to community students. Thanks to Lindsay Cobert and Kelly Lee, with help from two graduate students from The University of Texas at Dallas, we held an action-packed preschool Language Adventures program. This program provides language enrichment for children ages three to five who may be developmentally delayed in their understanding and expression of language, in addition to articulation skills. During the six-week program, preschoolers are engaged

in language-based activities following various themes, such as camping, circus, farm and sports. Several parents wished to continue the summer program; therefore, we extended it with a twelve-week program using fall themes. Kelly Lee and Mary Passmore run the fall program.

Some of our preschoolers who participated in summer Language Adventures are continuing private therapy, making good gains in their communication skills. The program has allowed our therapists to observe their preschoolers’ communication skills in a group setting and then provide communication strategies to be used by parents at home and in the daycare/school setting.

An important component of the mission of the Shelton Speech Clinic is to aid parents in identifying young children with developmental delays and to recommend appropriate intervention strategies. Early intervention is critical

not only for filling in learning gaps upon which to build future language, but also in avoiding frustration and allowing a child to maintain a high level of self-esteem as he matures. One way to accomplish this goal is through our outreach screening program in which we provide hearing, vision, speech/language and reading screenings to numerous private schools in the metroplex. This year we have provided screenings to twelve schools. Our screening program begins in August with Shelton screenings and is completed in January.

We welcome Leslie Delorenzi to our Clinic staff. Leslie has previously worked at Shelton School and helped us with community screenings. Our professional staff is enjoying a productive year.

The Shelton Evaluation Center is unique in the Dallas area because our experienced staff is capable of offering multiple kinds of evaluations and integrating the information from these

different types of assessments in order to fully understand our clients. We offer psychoeducational, neuropsychological, and psychological evaluations, plus evaluations specific to ADHD to clients who range in age from two years to adult.

A psychoeducational evaluation assesses learning difficulties and is the type we do most often at the Center. Parents usually want an evaluation because they have concerns about some type of learning problem that their child is having. These concerns might include a problem with attention or with sitting still, difficulty reading or with understanding what has been read, illegible handwriting, or not being able to get work done in a reasonable amount of time. Anxiety and other types of emotional difficulties or problems with social interactions may also be present.

One of the most common concerns we see is with reading, and we often diagnose a reading disorder. Trouble with reading is usually due to a neurological disorder called dyslexia. Dyslexia, a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin, is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction (International Dyslexia Association, 2002).

Because we so often see this difficulty, it may be helpful to explain the process by which we make a diagnosis. Once the initial paperwork and deposit is received, an appointment is scheduled. On the day of testing, parents typically meet with the evaluator in the morning. Parents are interviewed to get a developmental and educational history, as well as a history and description of the problem. Parents and teachers are also asked to fill out behavioral questionnaires prior to the day of testing. This allows us to assess the difficulty across multiple settings. While the parent is being interviewed, the client (child) begins testing. A typical battery takes at least a day to administer and includes measures of intellectual/cognitive ability, attention, auditory and visual processing, oral and written language ability, fine and gross motor development, and academic skills. Cognitive tests used include the WISC-IV or WJ-Test of Cognitive Abilities. This gives an idea of the client’s intellectual potential and patterns of strengths and weaknesses across verbal reasoning, nonverbal reasoning, working memory, and processing speed tasks. Tests of phonological processing might include the CTOPP or the Process Assessment of the Learner (PAL-II). These test the ability

to process the individual sounds in the language, which is the foundation for reading and spelling. Visual motor integration and fine motor skill might be assessed using the Beery VMI. Oral language, or one’s ability to use the spoken word expressively and receptively, is assessed using tests like the OWLS-II or the CASL. Academic functioning is evaluated using the WIAT or the WJ-Tests of Achievement. Reading, spelling, written expression, handwriting, and math are evaluated. Reading is looked at specifically using tests like the GORT-5. The types of errors that a client makes while reading can be a red flag for dyslexia. Reading comprehension is also assessed using this test. The results obtained on all of these tests allow us to make a diagnosis of different types of learning difficulties, including dyslexia.

Our goal is to obtain a comprehensive picture of the client’s functioning so that we can make recommendations to facilitate success at home and in school. Through our evaluation process, we give parents a roadmap that helps them navigate the challenging road of raising a child with learning difficulties. For example, if dyslexia is found, Academic Language Therapy would be recommended as the way to remediate. With proper help, many dyslexics can learn to read and write well. Most people with dyslexia need help from a teacher, tutor, or therapist specially trained in using a multisensory, structured language (MSL) approach. It is important for these individuals to be taught by a systematic and explicit method that involves several senses (hearing, seeing, touching) at the same time. Many individuals with dyslexia need one-on-one help so that they can move forward at their own pace. In addition, students with dyslexia often need a great deal of structured practice and immediate, corrective feedback to develop automatic word recognition skills (IDA, 2012).

If you have questions about our Evaluation Center services, please call (972) 774-1772, Ext 2244. We look forward to partnering with you to help your child.

Young Chefs Stir Up Some Stone Soup

Bonita Smith and Pamela Kinsell’s pre-primary/first grade class enjoyed making a big pot of “Stone Soup.” The students discussed cooperation in Social Skills class, and they all worked together to get the job done, each student bringing one recipe ingredient from home. The class used their Practical Life skills of spooning, pouring, measuring, peeling, and cutting vegetables to make delicious soup. Chef Tom Flannery and his crew from SAGE Dining helped out by letting the class use the school’s commercial kitchen. The soup was mmm, mmm good!

Jack the Squirrel Captivates Fourth Grade

In early fall fourth-grader Josh Bransky spotted a baby squirrel that had fallen out of its nest, or, for some unknown reason, was without a mother or home. It was discovered in vines near an exit door. Casey Barnett and Christina Kasten’s class decided to take it in. Right away they called classmate Will Morris’ mom, knowing she would find a way to help. She brought Pedialite to the classroom, and students made a hot water bottle to warm it up before feeding the squirrel. It was determined that the squirrel was only two weeks old, with eyes still closed and very little fur. Before Mrs. Morris took the squirrel to her mother’s, the students took it around to every class so that all the children could see it. They were amazed and happy to be a part of helping the little orphan. Jack, as the squirrel was named, has been back to visit several times. He even opened his eyes during one visit. Now Jack’s favorite food is avocados, and he has discovered nuts. Almost everyone in third / fourth grade knows Jack. School experiences like these are the ones that are never forgotten. They serve to remind us that learning is wonderous.

“There is no other honor that exceeds this at Shelton,” said Linda Kneese, Head of School, at the ceremony. “We are proud of these charter members who blaze the trail for others in achieving this exemplary achievement.” Founding members, all seniors, include Samantha Bongiorno, Barrett Cole, Tommy Cutler, Quinn Duncan, Erin Finch, Jacob Goldfine, Daniel Jee, Maggie Thomas, Tori Walters and Dan Wentworth. Greg Farnsworth, head of Shelton’s Upper School Reading Department, will serve as faculty sponsor.

Shelton will induct its next group of students in Spring 2013. Plans are also underway for a group service project.

Shelton Artists’ Work Featured at IDA Conference

Ten Shelton students from Middle School and fifth grade participated in the Artist Showcase at the 63rd Annual International Dyslexia (IDA) Conference in Towson, Maryland in October. Featured artists included: London Boscamp, Hannah Field, Cayley Harris, Kyndall Hodgson, Connor Housewright, Andrew Martin, Gavin McKenzie, Carson Newby, Curtis Stewart, and Mitchell Weiner.

Gallery Days Continue

Middle School and fifth grade art students have presented their work and short reports on artists to parents and other guests during Gallery Days this fall. Please check the school calendar for upcoming Gallery Days throughout the year.

Artists Work in Varied Mediums

Art I classes have been improving their drawing skills, done collage, and recently created handbuilt and thrown ceramic works. The Studio Art class has worked in pastel, done henna tattoos, done projects in photography and abstraction. Their creations are on display in the Lenox Art Gallery.

Theatre Bill

Shelton Upper School Theatre Arts began the year with the fall production of The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. The play, which centers on the relationship of Helen Keller and her beloved teacher, Annie Sullivan, was performed November 8-10 to a full house nightly. The company of 31 students (cast and crew) worked diligently for eight weeks to bring the production to life. The set for the show, constructed by Upper School students, remained up in The Commons for Grandparents’ Day, so that visitors could see the workmanship. The play was under the leadership of Director Anné Hughes and Tech Director Clay Houston.

Other fall productions included Chicago ER...R (eighth grade), Teenage Nightmare (seventh grade), The Magic Wood (sixth grade), and Monster Hotel (fifth grade).

Miracle Worker

Shelton’s bands have had a bustling fall. With more than 100 Upper Elementary, Middle School, and Upper School students involved in the different band programs, there is always music in the air.

The after school band program is open to students in grades four through twelve. First year beginning band students learn the fundamentals of music theory through a traditional band instrument, bass guitar, or snare drum. Beginning Band students will perform their first concerts in December, with such holiday classics as Jingle Bells and My Dreydel. The Concert Band is for students with at least one year of experience. Their repertoire ranges from concert pieces like Alpha Squadron to popular music tunes like Firework. Members of this group have performed at numerous Shelton events, including the Charger 5K Fun Run, Grandparents’ Day, and many other community activities.

The fifth, sixth, and seventh grade specials and elective classes offer students a six- or twelve-week opportunity to explore their musical talents. Students learn to play a traditional wind instrument through daily performance of worksheets, exercises, and songs, with each grade level advancing in technique.

The Eighth Grade Elective combines with the Upper School Band to create an advanced ensemble for school events including pep rallies, Homecoming, and Grandparents’ Day. The Upper School Band is one of the premier Shelton musical ensembles. They rehearse daily, playing a variety of music from classical and pop genres. They also have added jazz improvisation. Students are encouraged to explore their creative talents through solo performance.

The Shelton Drumline features drummers from Upper School and Middle School. They perform at all varsity football games, select varsity basketball games, school pep rallies, and other events throughout the year. At the first 2012 home football game they performed with the Texas Christian University (TCU) Pep Band. TCU provided the horn players, and Shelton drummers played alongside the college students during the game and at halftime.

Members of the Shelton Bands and Drumline also participated in the DFW Walk for Autism Speaks. The Drumline kicked off the walk, leading 8,000 walkers from the starting line. The Shelton Upper School Band played jazz and rock songs along the route. Members of the after school band, Upper School Band, and Drumline combined with other musicians for pre- and post-walk entertainment. Autism Speaks staff said that the bands added just the oomph they had lacked at past events.

As the year continues, band members will perform at Shelton, as well as at the American Airlines Center for a Dallas Stars hockey game, and in Keystone, Colorado during Spring Break.

Not Your Same Old Little Women or Little MenMan Cave Book Club and the Girl Power Book Club, new to Shelton last year, continue to be popular with Upper

School students. Each group has 25 participants. Students enjoy refreshments together while everybody reports about the book they’re reading.

Library Media Coordinator Melissa Harrison reports that the boys are into science fiction, especially James Patterson’s Maximum Ride series. Sports books are gaining traction, along with recently published books about Seal Team Six. Girls are enjoying anything by Sarah Dessen, the Crank series, as well as The Hunger Games series, in which a tough female archetype is featured. Shelton also has some published authors, including Tori Walters, whose poems were published in the respected magazine, Teen Ink.

Book Fair Involves Entire Shelton Community

The annual Scholastic Book Fair took place October 22 - 26. Always a highlight with students, parents and staff, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to browse the Lower School Library for a wide array of books. Parent volunteers and Shelton library staff teamed together for an outstanding event that raised $45,000 for Shelton. Shelton dads enjoyed Lunch with Dad activities throughout the week – seems they are a soft touch when asked by students to purchase a book. In addition to the book sales, Shelton also delivered several hundred parent-donated books to the children of soldiers at Fort Hood. The Book Fair was a feel-good project all the way around. Shelton Is a Best Places to Work Repeater

For the second consecutive year, Shelton is honored to be one of the Dallas Morning News’Top 100 Places to Work 2012. As they did last year, Shelton employees went online to complete an extensive survey about our workplace this past summer. Out of 276 local companies that participated in the survey, Shelton again advanced to the top 100, ranking 16th (up from 21st last year) out of 35 mid-size companies. “Even more important was that Shelton was recognized for Best at Making Work Meaningful,” says Executive Director Suzanne Stell. She, Mitzi

Freeman, Maggie Adams, Mimi Drew and Anne Hendrick-Thomas represented Shelton employees at the awards luncheon on November 9.

Joyce Pickering Is AMS Living Legend

“Surprised is too mild a word!” says Dr. Joyce Pickering when asked how she feels about receiving the 2013 American Montessori Society (AMS) Living Legacy tribute. “When your peers honor you, there is nothing more meaningful.” The award culminates a career spent as an advocate of the Montessori approach, coupled with much service to AMS – as a keynote speaker for conferences, a board member since 2009, and as the current AMS Vice President. Most recently Joyce was the keynote speaker at the Institute of Montessori Education’s conference in Houston.

Shelton Teacher, Administrator Receive IMSLEC Award

Amanda Rollen, Shelton Middle School instructor, and Joy Martello, Head of Lower School, were honored, respectively, with the IMSLEC Innovator Award as Outstanding MSLE Teacher and Outstanding School Administrator at the International Multisensory Language Education Council (IMSLEC) annual meeting in Baltimore, MD on October 24. Charger 5K Sprint a Success

Shelton sponsored a 5K and 1-mile Fun Run on November 17. The race started on Shelton’s campus, and over 350 participants made themselves known to all neighbors along the route. The family-friendly event included a certified and timed 5K run, 1-mile run, and post-race celebration activities with bounce house, crafts, face-painting and refreshments.

“This was a great opportunity to create awareness of learning differences, as well as just a lot of fun on a brilliant fall morning,” says Shelton parent Elyse Lemery, who co-chaired the event with Shelton speech therapist Kelly Lee,

Shelton’s Steve McBride was master of ceremonies for the event. Shelton parent Jenice Dunayer led participants in Zumba warm-up exercises. The Drum Line added spirit for runners and walkers at the start and finish line. Jerry Bishop and Ken Utz led band members in rousing music for attendees. Vendors lined Shelton’s entrance, offering food, beverage, and information.

While not the first race in Shelton history, it was the first in many years. The event was months in the planning, with major activities coordinated by the Fun Run committee and help from Shelton’s wellness committee.

“This was one of our most spirited events ever,” says Shelton’s executive director Suzanne Stell. “We had support from cheer groups, poster-makers, face-painters, grandparents, bands, sponsors – the entire Shelton community rallied for this fun day.”

Proceeds benefit Shelton’s financial aid fund, which assists Shelton’s students and clients in need of its unique educational and therapeutic approaches.

The June Shelton Heritage Society honors benefactors who have contributed $50,000 or more to the needs of the school.

Delphi is a small town in the mountains of Greece where the famous oracle of Apollo supposedly took place, announcing the future. It is a symbol for seeking to know & shape the future.

To honor those individuals who seek to shape the future of Shelton School, the Delphi Society was established in 2003. The Society recognizes & thanks alumni & friends of Shelton who have created provisions in their wills or estate plans to benefit Shelton School.

This is the difference your contribution makes.

Just think what matching it can do for a student like Seth.

I’m Seth Goodwyn, Class of 2012. I transferred in as a sophomore after being in public schools in what is known as an especially good school district. However, it wasn’t good for me. I knew I would have a hard day ahead of me.

I used to think I hated school. I now understand that I hated feeling overwhelmed, not capable, and humiliated when tests were returned.

Nights at our house weren’t fun.

I worried about my future and getting into college.

At my last school I often felt lost in classes since they taught only one way.At Shelton the teachers understand learning differences.

I understand my learning difference and HOW to study; I know the strategies that work for me.I have confidence.I know I am smart.I know my strengths: my memory, critical thinking skills, and perseverance.

Our home life changed. It went from being “not fun and stressful” to “calm and peaceful.” I know what needs to be done and I know HOW to do it.

I am so proud of this improvement. I now realize that I actually enjoy learning!

Now I don’t worry about IF I can go to college, I am only wondering which school is the best fit.

For all these changes, I am grateful to the Shelton staff for their skills and caring. And to my parents and grandparents, thank you for your love and support; and for sending me to Shelton!

Seth is a freshman at Austin College, Sherman, TX. He was also accepted to Abilene Christian University, Texas Tech University, and Wayland Baptist University. The excerpts above come from a presentation he made to over 1,000 grandparents who visited Shelton in Fall 2011.

Shelton School2012-2013 Board of Trustees

2011 - 2012 Annual Report of Gifts 53

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome all our new and returning students and families.

As always, this year Shelton continues to add programs and opportunities that enrich the educational, physical and social experience of our students. Our dedicated staff and administration continue to provide the best environment and education anywhere for our children that think and learn differently. From personal experience and many years at Shelton I know lives are changed here and our children become who they want to be and are taught the tools to be successful in life.

For the future of Shelton, this year we need to focus on endowment. Everyone in the Shelton family can help in some way, be it monetarily or with your time

and efforts. Please consider what you can do to help us continue our great tradition of quality education for LD students.

Thank you for your support and have a great year!
