THE HOPE TO WHICH WE HAVE BEEN CALLED

I have always embraced “call” language when it comes to God’s movement and relationship to us. I like it and find it useful in many ways. One of the reasons I like “call” language is because its foundational premise is that however or whomever

we understand God, God is active and engaged, and therefore, that means that at a fundamental level, we are not alone.

This is good news.

Until this past Sunday, I had thought about God’s call being about many things, but never thought about God calling us to a specific hope. Of course, God always called us to hope in general. We are told that hope is one of the three things that abide; faith, hope and love, and of course the greatest is love. I always assumed that, of course God called us to hope in general. But not some kind of hope that is particular.

Perhaps one of the reasons this idea caught me off guard is because most of us have been taught that hope is a lofty ideal; something that only some people achieve or receive.

But this is not hope. Hope is not lofty or some kind of ideal. Hope is gritty. Hope is essential. Hope is wholehearted. Hope is simultaneously vulnerable and courageous. Hope requires a keen look and appreciation of reality and the plight of our world, and then still says, yep, this too is not the end. Some of us have been taught that the darkest moments are the most hopeless moments. But this is not true. Hope rather is reborn of darkness, sadness, longing, broken-heartedness…the places where our culture around us says, “that’s hopeless” are actually the moments God calls out hope again.

“…with the eyes of your hearts enlightened you may know what is the hope to which God has called you” was what we read from Ephesians on Sunday. I wonder what kind of hope the eyes of your heart sees? I can tell you that it makes a difference in what you believe, how you live, how you speak, how you love.

I have always trusted that God’s call was to a particular place, people, position, or even an idea, but never to a specific hope. (The definite article “the” that precedes the word hope in the passage of scripture is what indicates that it is specific not general.) If there is a hope to which God has called us, then God’s call is not limited just to time and place, but a call to something deeper that extends across time and place; and therefore, hope is indeed required..

Being called to a hope means that we are being called into the future. Some people think that if we are hopeful then this excludes our sadness, our grief, even our anger. But hope always includes these things.

The hope to which God has called Saint Stephens…if I can be so bold to gesture at it, is the hope that says, we refuse to accept the status quo when it comes to what it means to be Christian. We might worship in a beautiful traditional sanctuary, an old brick building, sing some of the old-time classic hymns, and yet what we do and how we live moves towards something a little more radical--a little more like Jesus.

Some of you have told me that you feel more capable to live in more daring, inclusive, and radical ways of being Christian, because I’ve been here. I’m moved and grateful that that might be the case. But here’s what might be surprising. I too feel more capable, more courageous, and more willing to take risks for the sake of the gospel that is not satisfied

ALL are Invited to ... “A Gratitude Circle” An evening of Stories & Celebration with Rev. Kyle Carnes

Tuesday, June 18, at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary at Saint Stephens

We will be celebrating Rev. Kyle’s ministry, but also celebrating what we have all done together as Saint Stephens. Take time before you come, to reflect on what Rev. Kyle has meant to you, and to Saint Stephens. Perhaps you can bring an object that has meaning for you and sparks a story. This will be a time to share stories, memories, and special moments with Rev. Kyle and with one another. There will be laughter; there will be tears. There will be sadness. But there will also be great joy. And the Spirit will be with us in this place and at this time. Even if you don’t have a story to tell or a gift to bring, please come. P.S. Feel free to come barefoot!

with the ways that things are. By God’s grace, together, we have found ways to encourage and inspire each other to do church, to live faithfully, to preach the gospel in ways that catch other people’s attention, when we weren’t able or ready to, before we knew each other.

Thank you for the gift of this courage. I will not forget your kindness.

In anticipation of Pentecost blessings, Kyle

UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

Kevin Golisch has been a life-long member of Saint Stephens United Church of Christ and is now serving the last year of his second term on Church Council, meaning 2019 will be his fourth year on Council. Kevin says he joined Council because he enjoys helping out and making a difference. “There are people that do, and

people that don’t,” he says. And, “If the people that do, don’t do it, it ain’t gonna get done!” That might be worth a little chuckle, but it’s also food for thought.

“Saint Stephens is all about making a difference,” Kevin explains. “Family and friends are a critical part of that dynamic ... that is Saint Stephens!!” And your current Council wants to talk with even more people who want to make a difference. They want you to get to know them and not to be nervous about approaching one of them (hence this new column!) and they’d love to talk with more members of the congregation. They’d like to know what’s on your mind, and they’d like to talk with more members who would like to be a part of Council. They are hoping that for 2020, we can have a real honest-to-goodness election with more people running for Council than open positions on Council, so your votes are truly meaningful.

“I am proud of what we have accomplished on Council,” Kevin says, “especially the numerous upgrades to Saint Stephens.”

Kevin works at Church Mutual Insurance Company as a Senior Underwriter, where he has been employed for 34 years. When he’s not working or at church, Kevin loves to spend time with his wife, Jodi, their children, and their grandchildren. They have two sons and one daughter: Luke, is married to Jess with two daughters, Nora and Isla; Ryan, is engaged to Kayla; and their daughter is Hope. He especially enjoys spending time outdoors, especially at Athletic Park and at their cabin. Kevin is an avid sports fan. “Go Bluejays! Go Brewers! Go Packers!” Kevin says. When asked what he hates, Kevin responds, “I hate any team that is playing against the Bluejays, Brewers, or Packers!!” LOL

What he loves is a longer list. “I love reading anything inspirational or motivational,” Kevin says. “I love going to the Lincoln County Fair.” And eating “anything spicy.”

His favorite movie is Field of Dreams, but he also enjoys comedies, westerns and action movies. His favorite season is fall, because it’s the “best time to be outdoors, spending time at the cabin.”

His biggest pet peeve: “People being late ... whether it is work, an appointment, etc. If you aren’t early , you are late!” Kevin says.

Now you know him a little better, so if you don’t already know Kevin, walk up and introduce yourself. Celebrate your common interests and make a new friend. Or share any church concerns you might have. Better yet, tell him you’re thinking of running for Church Council this fall.

SCRIP EARNS MONEY FOR SAINT STEPHENSA parishioner’s child was doing a flooring project at home that would result in a big purchase from Lowe’s, so she planned ahead and purchased $4,000 worth of Lowe’s Scrip. At the time of the special order, Lowe’s was giving us 6% profit ... so on that ONE big sale, the Scrip program (i.e., Saint Stephens!) profited $240!

Planning on doing some home improvements? Or making a large purchase? Plan ahead and special order Scrip cards to do it, and Saint Stephens can benefit in a potentially huge way ... with barely any effort on your part and no money out of YOUR pocket! Scrip is a win/win for everyone ... and especially Saint Stephens!

In May, the Scrip program had enough funds to transfer $2,000 over to the Saint Stephens General Fund. That’s awesome!

CONDOLENCESWe extend the condolences of the Christian faith to those who passed away during the month of May 2019:

Virginia Krause - May 24, 2019

THANK YOU!Thank you to Brian and Jennifer Oestreich for the donation of a baby swing for our nursery! We are sure the babies and our nursery staff will enjoy the addition!

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .New

Behold, I make all things new. - Revelation 21:5 (KJV)

Here we are, in the last book of the Bible; and in the next-to-last chapter of that final book. We might expect a summation, a conclusion, or even a sunset and a “The End.” Not happening.

The word of the Lord is: “Behold, I make all things new.”

God’s capacity to do this, when all our hope is gone and our own resources are spent, is the heart of the gospel. “Impossible” is where this God begins. We live under this promise.

That God can work a new thing doesn’t mean there aren’t endings. Relationships do end, as do careers and marriages.

The endings are real. And important. They bring us, often, to the end of our rope, that is to say, to the place where our own resources, strength or virtue aren’t any longer sufficient or effective.

How many times when struggling to prepare a sermon have I thrown up my figurative hands and said, “I have nothing to say!” Only then, it seems, does God speak, does a word from the Lord come to me. How many times has “hopeless” has been spoken over a situation, when God opened a way. How many lives have been consigned to an end labeled “addiction,” when God made a way out of no way.

Prayer

Holy One, “I dare not trust this earthy frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.” (“My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less,” Edward Mote) Amen.

by Tony Robinson

NEWS FROM THE GREEN TEAM ...Hello again from the Green Team. Since forming, over the course of the last four months, we have tried, mostly through The Interpreter, to share information about what the team is up to. As was stated in the recent update, we are basically trying to raise awareness and engage our church community in thoughtful and thought provoking discussions regarding the issue of climate change and sustainability. Before going further, we thought we should give you more information about what drives our team and our current plans.

The team is primarily concerned about the environment that future generations will inherit from us. We are concerned about our own children and grandchildren, but also

feel challenged by the gospel to care for all of our brothers and sisters. We see our work driven by three major forces. These are: 1) our National UCC church, 2) the scientific community, and 3) the Holy Spirit.

As you may have already seen in our notes, our UCC church’s environmental ministry focuses on climate change as one of its primary goals. You can find more information here: https://www.ucc.org/environmental-ministries

As far as the scientific community, we will rely on the consensus of the majority of scientists as we do our work. At this point, reports show that about 97% of the climate scientists agree that climate change is occurring and that human activities are the cause. Check out this site for more information: https://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/

Our team also believes that we have the capability of doing things to improve the climate change situation. A lot of good data about climate change can currently be found in the most recent Climate Assessment which was assembled by over 300 experts and reviewed by experts in 13 US government agencies: https://nca2018.globalchange.gov

In terms of following the Holy Spirit, it probably can’t be summed up better than in Kyle’s recent message to “Love First.”

At this point, 13 team members have signed on, and others continue to show interest. We welcome new members and hope we can interest younger voices. Again, our goal is to provide information and encourage thoughtful discussions between friends, family, and others about these issues. Please don’t forget we want your feedback, which you can provide by contacting anyone on the team, sending us a note using the communication tools in the Realm program, or via the St. Stephens Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ststephensunitedchurchofchrist/

We look forward to working with you and the UCC, both in Wisconsin and nationally, on these issues.
