THE HOMILY OF ST HILDA
Trade with the gifts God has given you.
Bend your minds to holy learning that you may escape the fretting moth
of littleness of mind that would wear out your souls.
Brace your wills to action that they may not be the spoils of weak desire.
Train your hearts and lips to song which gives courage to the soul.
Being buffeted by trials, learn to laugh.
Being reproved, give thanks.
Having failed, determine to succeed.

Co-Curricular & Extra-Curricular Handbook - V1 2018 081217 Page 5
Introduction At St Hilda’s School we offer a wide range of co-curricular activities and also some extra-curricular activities. Many significant life skills are taught or may be learned in these programs. These include leadership, decision-making and commitment, learning to take responsibility in the community, learning to work in teams and motivate others, learning to organise and learning to negotiate. Through their involvement in these activities, students develop a sense of accomplishment and enhance their self-confidence by using their talents and responding to the challenges presented to them. Co-curricular activities form an integral part in the learning and development of all students as they augment the formal curriculum. Each student in Years 7–12 at St Hilda’s School is expected to participate in at least one co-curricular activity each term. This handbook has been designed to help you and your daughter to navigate your way through the array of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities available and to assist them to make informed choices. The information contained in this handbook includes a description of each activity and the benefits to participants, including details such as the venue and times each activity is run and contact information for the staff in charge of the activity.
Co-Curricular activity Co-curricular activities are those additional activities which are not taught in the usual classroom environment. The co-curricular dimension of an all-round education has never been more important than it is today. They expose students to community, state, and national organisations and thus create links to the "real world." Co-curricular activities allow students to learn a variety of skills, many of which they will carry with them for life. The variety of co-curricular activities offered at St Hilda’s School aims to accommodate the diverse range of students’ interests and abilities. They encompass areas of sport and cultural activities. Most of the co-curricular activities offered do not entail extra cost; however, some activities will have a small charge for special requirements.
Extra-Curricular activity Extra-Curricular activities are those that fall outside the realm of the normal curriculum of school and the majority are not explicitly connected to academic learning. Extra-Curricular activities are usually run by outside providers who charge fees for their services.

Service Activities Non Nobis Solum As a school community, we believe the ethos of the School should reflect our core values: Compassion, Love, Hope, Grace and Forgiveness. We encourage students to consider these values, thereby developing knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable them to develop as reflective learners mindful of how their actions can have a positive impact on those around them. The School Motto, Non Nobis Solum – Not for Ourselves Alone, is an important principle that guides the School’s community service activities. Schools play a major role in fostering the attitude, skills, and knowledge students require so that they may develop into caring adults. Through participation in service activities, students learn that the purpose of their education is to have a positive impact on the people and the world around them. Each student needs to be able to relate the ideas and concepts to themselves, take ownership and responsibility and hopefully, develop and grow into citizens who contribute positively to their communities. Providing community service opportunities during school years can create a habit that has lasting effects. Community Service Activities Service activities give students the chance to serve the wider community, both locally and globally, through raising money and awareness, and taking action where possible.
