Brothers and Sisters,
What a difference a week makes! Last
week we journeyed with Jesus into the
desert and today we climb the mountain
of transfigura on. So is the story of our lives. Throughout life
we experience highs and lows, mountaintops and deserts. It
is on the mountaintops where we discover a thrill and joy
like no other ‐ where we feel most alive spiritually and are so
sure that we are on the right path with God. Then there are
mes along life’s journey when it feels like we are si ng
alone in the desert. The desert experience typically includes
a dryness, sadness or longing. In this desert, we o en feel
lost or weak in our spiritual walk with God, or a longing for
direc on about God’s plan for us.
I am thankful that we have opportuni es to experience both.
Don’t get me wrong, it is never desirable to embrace suffer‐
ings or challenges o en experienced in the desert! But, it is
most o en in these mes when one can experience the
greatest growth. Sure, at the me, it is difficult to see that
growth, but if you and I look back and reflect about those
mes, we realize how that desert experience revealed new
strengths, talents, growth, and learning. On the other hand, I
am also grateful for the mountaintop experience. High above
the challenges is where one celebrates the steps along the
journey and finds a new perspec ve and clarity. On the
mountaintop, we can see beyond our usual boundaries and
often feel renewed in purpose and excited about possibilities.
Do we see and experience God in these places? If we do not,
then a desert is just a desert and a mountain just a mountain.
Some mes it will be easier to see God while at other mes,
it will be more difficult. God is with us in both places, loving
and providing us with meaning and purpose for our lives. Are
we looking for Him in both places? During Lent, the song,
Hosea, reminds us of God’s constant call to us, “long have I
waited for your coming home to me and living deeply our
new life.” Are we willing to listen to His voice and live deeply
our new life with God?
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI once encouraged all to experi‐
ence Lent much like a retreat: “Lent is like a long 'retreat'
during which we can turn back into ourselves and listen to
the voice of God, in order to defeat the tempta ons of the
Evil One. It is a period of spiritual 'combat' which we must
experience alongside Jesus, not with pride and presump on,
but using the arms of faith: prayer, listening to the word of
God and penance. In this way we will be able to celebrate
Easter in truth, ready to renew the promises of our Bap sm.”
As we con nue this journey of Lent and prepare to renew
our bap smal promises anew, may we give support to the
newly Elect of our parish: the people who are preparing to
enter our Catholic faith through Bap sm, Confirma on and
Eucharist at Easter. May we also support the Candidates,
who are already one with us in Bap sm and are seeking to
become one with us in the Catholic faith through Confirma‐
on and Eucharist. The Catechism of the Catholic Church
affirms that “faith needs the community of believers” (CCC
1253). In mes of weakness, uncertainty or dryness, we find
support in the faith of others. In times of mountaintop clarity,
we share faith to li others up in Christ. I invite each of you
to select one person seeking to be one with us in our Catholic
Church and pray for that person throughout Lent. Their
names are listed below. Please write the person you choose
a note to encourage them along the way to Easter. Drop it
off at the parish office or place it into the Sunday offering
basket. Our amazing parish staff will help forward your note
to the individual. We are one Catholic Community in Christ,
and it is our responsibility to support and walk with each
other from the deserts to the mountaintops so those who
seek God will see and know Him.
Together, let us glorify Christ’s Holy Name!

Hermanos y hermanas,
¡Qué diferencia marca una semana! La
semana pasada caminamos con Jesús
en el desierto y hoy subimos al monte de
la transfiguración. Así es la historia de nuestras vidas. En el
transcurso de la vida pasamos por altibajos, cimas de montañas
y desiertos. Es en las cimas de las montañas que descubrimos
una emoción y una alegría sin igual, donde nos sen mos más
vivos espiritualmente y estamos tan seguros de que estamos
en el camino correcto con Dios. Luego, hay momentos en el
camino de la vida en los que sen mos que estamos solos en
el desierto. La experiencia del desierto generalmente incluye
aridez, tristeza o anhelo. En este desierto, a menudo nos
sentimos perdidos o debilitados en nuestro caminar espiritual
con Dios, o anhelamos que Dios nos muestre el plan que tiene
para nosotros.
Agradezco que tengamos la oportunidad de vivir ambas
experiencias. No me malinterpreten, ¡nunca anhelamos los
sufrimientos o desa os que a menudo encontramos en el
desierto! Pero, es mayormente en estos momentos que uno
puede sen r un mayor crecimiento. Claro, en el momento es
di cil ver ese crecimiento, pero si ustedes y yo miramos
hacia atrás y reflexionamos sobre esos momentos, nos
damos cuenta de cómo esa experiencia en el desierto reveló
nuevas fortalezas, talentos, crecimiento y conocimientos.
Por otra parte, agradezco también la experiencia en la cima
de la montaña; muy por encima de los desa os es donde
uno celebra los pasos a lo largo del camino y encuentra una
nueva perspec va y claridad. Desde la cima podemos ver
más allá de nuestros límites habituales y, a menudo, nos
sen mos renovados en nuestro propósito y nos entusiasman
las posibilidades.
¿Vemos y sen mos la presencia de Dios en estos lugares?
Si no es así, entonces un desierto es solamente un desierto y
una montaña solo una montaña. A veces será más fácil ver a
Dios, mientras que en otras ocasiones será más di cil. Dios
está con nosotros en ambos lugares, amándonos y dándonos
una razón y un propósito en nuestras vidas. ¿Lo buscamos
en los dos lugares? Durante la Cuaresma, el canto, Hosea,
nos recuerda el constante llamado de Dios: ”Desde hace
empo esperaba que vinieras a casa para vivir a plenitud
nuestra nueva vida". ¿Estamos dispuestos a escuchar su voz
y vivir a plenitud nuestra nueva vida con Dios?
El papa emérito Benedicto XVI en una ocasión nos invitó a
vivir la Cuaresma como un retiro: “La Cuaresma es como un
largo ‘retiro’ durante el que debemos volver a entrar en
nosotros mismos y escuchar la voz de Dios para vencer las
tentaciones del Maligno y encontrar la verdad de nuestro ser.
Podríamos decir que es un tiempo de ‘combate’ espiritual que
hay que librar juntamente con Jesús, sin orgullo ni presunción,
sino más bien utilizando las armas de la fe, es decir, la oración,
la escucha de la Palabra de Dios y la penitencia. De este modo
podremos llegar a celebrar verdaderamente la Pascua,
dispuestos a renovar las promesas de nuestro Bautismo”.
A medida que con nuamos este caminar de Cuaresma y nos
preparamos para renovar nuestras promesas bau smales,
apoyemos a los recién Elegidos de nuestra parroquia: los
que se preparan para profesar nuestra fe católica al recibir
el bau smo, la confirmación y la eucaris a en la Pascua.
Apoyemos también a los Candidatos, que ya son uno con
nosotros en el bautismo y buscan pasar a ser uno con nosotros
en la fe católica al recibir la confirmación y la eucaris a.
El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica afirma que “la fe ene
necesidad de la comunidad de creyentes” (CIC 1253). En los
momentos de debilidad, incertidumbre o aridez, encontramos
apoyo en la fe de los demás. En los momentos de claridad en
la cima de la montaña, compartimos la fe para reanimar a
otros en Cristo. Invito a cada uno de ustedes a que seleccio-
nen a una de las personas que buscan ser uno con nosotros
en nuestra Iglesia Católica y que oren por ella durante la
Cuaresma. Sus nombres aparecen en la página 1. Por favor
escriban una nota a la persona que elijan para animarla en el
camino hacia la Pascua. Déjenla en la oficina parroquial o
colóquela en la canasta del ofertorio dominical. Nuestros
increíbles empleados parroquiales harán llegar su nota a la
persona. Somos una comunidad católica en Cristo, y es nuestra
responsabilidad apoyarnos y caminar juntos de los desiertos
hasta las cimas de las montañas para que quienes buscan a
Dios lo vean y lo conozcan.

Every January, our Bishop asks every Catholic family in
the Diocese of San Bernardino to financially support the
Diocesan Development Fund (DDF). The DDF fosters faith
for the future by suppor ng Catholic Schools, Faith
Forma on for children and adults, and especially by
providing Seminarian Forma on for future priests.
The DDF also fights poverty by funding Catholic Chari es,
which provides tangible resources and educa on for
people in need throughout San Bernardino and Riverside
coun es.
Please pray that our Catholic faith will increase
throughout our Diocese so that together, we will impact people’s lives with hope in Christ’s Holy Name.

The first reading today con nues the “history of salva on”
narra ve that we hear throughout Lent this year. Today’s
story was among the best‐loved in the Jewish tradi on
(surely Joseph told the story to young Jesus as he formed him
in the ways of their faith); the early fathers of the Church
were very fond of it as a means of explaining the sacrifice of
Christ on the cross. The overall tone of the first reading, psalm,
and second reading seems a li le incongruous with the daz‐
zling Gospel, un l we remember that the Transfigura on was
placed as the Gospel for this Sunday precisely to remind us of
the glory that awaits those who live faithfully and obediently
to the will of God. In the life of Jesus, it is a preview of the
glory of his resurrec on; for us it is a glimpse of the des ny
of those who con nue, as we heard in last week’s Gospel, to

6 God’s Love Transforms Us
My husband, Sco , was bap zed into the Catholic Church when he was 34 years old. Why then? Here’s
what he says about his journey:
“Being raised in a more‐or‐less secular household, I was allowed to “make my own decision”
regarding my religious beliefs. Not surprisingly, my decision for most of my life was “none of
the above”. Slowly, though, I began to wonder if there was another component to life that I
was missing. Maybe there was a God who loves us? A er looking into several faiths, I signed up
for RCIA. Mind you, I was s ll skep cal.
Running late in West LA traffic on a Friday night, I almost abandoned my a empt to make it to the
RCIA retreat. But something told me that I should keep going, and that everything would be fine.
I’d never had such a strong feeling about anything before. Later, during that retreat, I felt the Holy
Spirit telling me that I was finally home. God rescued me; and, I’ve rejoiced ever since that ‘dawn’.”
Scott discovered that there IS a God who loves him unconditionally, who became flesh to hold him and guide him, who died in
order to save him. Entering into relationship with our triune God through Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist forever trans‐
formed Scott. His parish’s loving, prayerful support, and formation nourished him. He offers his gifts and talents so others come
to know God’s love.
This is the Good News we share:
God exists. God loves you without limits — well beyond your comprehension.
God sacrificed His Son so that you and I will never be separated from Him,
but instead live fully with Him a er this life forever.
God’s Love gives life, opens doors, and makes the impossible possible. God has given
us His very best. God desires to have an in mate rela onship with each of us. Can we
not entrust our en re lives to Him knowing He will con nue to pour out His love on
us? As we entrust our lives to God, He will more fully reveal Himself to us.
Share the Good News in word and deed, and see what happens!

La primera lectura de hoy con núa la “historia de la salva‐ción”, relato que oímos a lo largo de la Cuaresma de este año. El relato de hoy era uno de los más queridos en la tradición judía (seguramente José se lo contó al joven Jesús cuando le enseñaba los caminos de la fe); a los primeros padres de la Iglesia les gustaba usarlo para explicar el sacrificio de Cristo en la cruz. El tono general de la primera lectura, del salmo y la segunda lectura me parece un poco fuera de lugar frente al Evangelio deslumbrante, hasta que recordamos que la Trans‐figuración se incluyó como el Evangelio de este domingo, precisamente para recordarnos la gloria que les espera a aquellos que son fieles y obedientes a la voluntad de Dios. En la vida de Jesús, es un an cipo de la gloria de su resurrección, para nosotros es una visión del des no de aquellos que con ‐núan, como hemos escuchado en el Evangelio de la semana pasada, arrepin éndose y creyendo en la Buena Nueva. © J. FIESTA DE LA FE Silencio sagrado
Es muy difícil hacer ver la importancia del silencio en la vida diaria a una sociedad acostumbrada a los ruidos y a la música en iPods u otros dispositivos electrónicos. La sola idea del silencio causa cierto estupor. No obstante, la Instrucción General para el uso del Misal Romano (45–46), enfatiza la clara necesidad de aprovechar el silencio sagrado, cuya natu‐raleza “depende del momento de la misa”. Sea para pedir perdón por no corresponder al amor de Dios, para dejar que su palabra haga eco en nuestro corazón, o bien, para interio‐rizar lo que hemos compartido de la plenitud de Cristo en la sagrada comunión. El guardar silencio no sólo implica la ausencia de ruidos exteriores, sino también una disposición interna total, de alma y cuerpo, para escuchar a Dios que nos habla de muchas maneras. Es abrir a Dios el corazón en una franca experiencia de oración. Tal silencio se recomienda también antes del inicio de la misa, para que cada persona se disponga a una participación plena, consciente y activa en los sagrados misterios.
