Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph "He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to
them." We might be tempted to think that Jesus more or less raised himself. As the Son of God, it might appear on first glance that earthly
parents would be a mere formality for this particular child. But it wasn't so. Mary and Joseph had real influence, and real authority, over
their son. Although Jesus apparently understood from a tender age how he related to God ("Did you not know that I must be in my Father's
house?"), he also knew that he owed appropriate respect to his parents. This is why he stayed in their home in Nazareth and was obedient to them. And because of this obedience, clearly Mary and Joseph must
have been deeply influential in his life. Their direction, their teachings, their example, and their rules would all have shaped Jesus in his
humanity. It was thanks in no small part to the matriarch and patriarch of the Holy Family that Jesus "advanced in wisdom and age and favor
before God and man." We should be advancing in these ways too! And those of us who are parents are likewise called to direct and guide our children to develop
as Jesus did, not only forming our sons and daughters to succeed in the eyes of men, but also leading them on the path of "favor before God."
The Holy Family serves as a beautiful model for us in this regard. They help us learn how to submit our lives to the loving leadership of our heavenly Father. But more than this, Mary and Joseph also serve
as intercessors who, like any faithful family member or friend, want to pray with us and for us. Let us turn, then, to the intercession of the
Holy Family asking that our families may be holy too.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Good News and Bad News For a Pastor
Good News: The Women’s Guild voted to send you a get-well card.
Bad News: The vote passed by 31-30.
Good News: Mrs. Jones is wild about your sermons. Bad News: Mrs. Jones is also wild about the “Gong
Show,” “Beavis and Butthead” and “Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”
Good News: Your women’s softball team finally won a game.
Bad News: They beat your men’s softball team.
Please note that this coming Friday, January 1, 2016, is the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God and is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass schedule is the same as Sunday. The Vigil Mass will be Thursday, December 31, at 5:30 p.m. and Mass on the day are 6:30, 8:00, & 10:00 a.m. as well as 12:00 Noon.
Oh, The Glory That Awaits Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. And so we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. (1 Jn 3:1-2)
When Christmas falls toward the end of the week as it does this year, the feasts really seem to come at us fast and furious. As a matter of fact, they come so fast that we tend to lose focus of all that we celebrate. Two days ago, we celebrated the Nativity of Jesus. Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. This is an important feast. I encourage you to take the time necessary to focus upon it.
Two days ago, we celebrated the birth of a Child, a very special Child, the Son of God. That Son was born into a family. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were bound together in faith and love and show us what a family is all about.
At times, it is not very pretty. After all, the Holy Family had to pull up stakes and rush out of their country because Herod was looking for the Child Jesus in order to kill Him. Years later, the Holy Family would find themselves coming back from exile in Egypt. Some years after that, they would experience a moment of shock as they lost their Son. Today's Gospel tells us of the story of Jesus being left behind in Jerusalem and the anxiety that caused. Several years after that, we will see a mother torn with grief at the foot of the cross of her Son.
Family is not always real pretty. Things happen in families that are not always happy events. Yet families are forged by love and commitment.
John reminds us of the special family that we have become by the virtue that we are already children of God. We do not have to wait for any special moment to come about in order for that to happen. We are not going to become God's children some day. We already are.
That is incredibly Good News. When we finally see God face-to-face, we will understand that great mystery completely. Until the time we meet up with God, though, we can cling to the hope of being united one day.
We often forget that we are already members of God’s family. Our families on earth are not always perfect. Sometimes they are messy. Sometimes they are fractured. Sometimes they are incredibly painful. We ask God today to bless our families. For the ones that are intact, we ask Him to bless our families with even more love and joy. For our families that are in disarray, we ask God to bring healing and peace.
FAITH ACTION: Take some time today to tell your family members how much they mean to you and then take some time in silent prayer to thank God for making you His child.
POSSIBLE SPIRITUAL RESOLUTIONS Every year we make resolutions in order to become better people. So often, our resolutions do not encompass our faith. Here are some ideas for resolutions for the New Year. If any work for you, choose one or two. Commit to a certain amount of time for daily prayer Visit the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesdays Volunteer to help at a homeless shelter Volunteer to help at a soup kitchen Join Pastoral Care to visit the sick or shut-in Read from the Bible every day Do some spiritual reading every day Go to confession monthly Keep a spiritual journal Contribute regularly to St. Vincent de Paul Become a spiritual companion

St. Vincent DePaul Society This joyous season, culminating in Christ’s birth, is a happy time
of year for most people. However, there are others who experience sadness during
this Christmas season due to personal circumstances and the inability to provide
for their families, halting them from joining in the celebration of Christmas.
Won’t you consider assisting the St. Vincent de Paul Society in assisting us to provide food this Christmas Season for
those with the forlorn faces? Better yet, join us as a new member of the Society and
allow yourself to see the smiles and happiness we provide to the less fortunate.
Our meetings are on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month in the Parish Conference room at 7:00 p.m.

Sounds of the Season A musical treat awaited those who attended the annual Christmas Band Concert on December 10th, as our
80-member band performed for relatives and friends.
In addition to some classic Christmas tunes, and a few
STMS favorites, audience members were asked to join in for the
traditional sing-along. Thanks to band director, Rick Mlynarski for directing another top-notch holiday show.

Travelers Club News This has been another most interesting and unusual year for the
St. Thomas More Travelers Club: First we toured Father Blaney’s Share Foundation in Rolling
Meadows, IN, then on to Amish Acres, an Odyssey Boat Trip in Chicago and finally the Taste of Chicago.
It has given us great pleasure to see how much our travelers have enjoyed our trips and we appreciate all the support we’ve had in planning throughout the year. We love all our very cheerful and
happy travelers and we thank you! We have some exciting ideas for next year, so look for the St.
Thomas More Sunday bulletins next March when we will give you more information about our next trip scheduled for April 2016. May God bless all our travelers and their families with a very healthy and happy New Year….stay warm and be safe in the
coming winter months. Our appreciation and best wishes,
Lois, Pat and Mary
