FIRST USE – GRILL BURN-OFF Once your hopper has been primed with wood pellets and before cooking on your

grill for the first time, it is important to complete a grill burn-off. Start the grill and operate at high heat (over

233°C / 450°F) with the lid down for 30 to 40 minutes to burn-off the grill and rid it of any foreign matter.

Use only all natural wood pellets designed to burn in pellet grills. Ensure your pellet fuel stays moisture free.

Open bags of pellets should be stored in an airtight container. Empty the hopper if you are not using the grill

over longer periods of time.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF YOUR HOLLAND KC PELLET GRILL

follow these cleaning and maintenance tips and your KC Pellet Grill will give you many years of service.

1. HOPPER ASSEMBLY AND FIRE POTfor best results use a long handled brush or shop-vac to remove excess pellets, sawdust, and debris

inside the hopper. it is recommended to clean your burn pot at least after every few uses. This will ensure

proper ignition and avoid any hard build-up of debris or ash in the burn pot.

Check and clean off any debris from the fan air intake vent, found on the bottom of the hopper. for

maximum pellet hopper performance long term, it is best to monitor the cleanliness of the the fan blades.

remove hopper access panel on bottom of hopper and carefully wipe off any grease build-up directly on

the fan blades. This ensures consistant airflow to the heating system.

2. INSIDE SURFACESremove any food or build-up from the cooking grid after every use. allow the grill and cooking grid to

self-clean by running the grill at a high temperature for 5 to 10 minutes after each use. Check your grease

bucket often, and clean out as necessary.

3. OUTSIDE SURFACESwipe your grill down often. use warm soapy water to cut the grease. do not use oven cleaner, abrasive

cleansers or abrasive cleaning pads on the outside grill surfaces.

• Keep the entire grill a minimum 12 inches, or a safe distance, from all combustibles.

• Do not install or operate grill under a combustible ceiling or overhang.

• Do not enlarge burn grate orifices, igniter holes or burn pots

• Must be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis

• After a period of storage, and/or non-use, the KC Pellet Grill should be checked for burn grate obstructions,

foreign objects both inside the grill and the hopper, and air blockage, before use.

• Do not put a barbeque cover or anything flammable on, or in the storage space area under the barbeque.

• Children should never use the KC Pellet Grill while unattended. Accessible parts of the barbeque may be

very hot. Keep young children away while it is in use.

• Do not use lava rock, wood chucks or charcoal in your KC Pellet Grill.

• Do not use accessories not specified for use with this appliance.

• Never lean over open grill or place hands or fingers on the front edge of the cooking box or in the hopper.

• should a grease fire occur, turn “off” the control and leave lid closed until the fire is out. Do Not unplug the

power cord. Do Not throw water on it. Do Not try to smother the fire.

• Do Not use your KC Pellet grill in the rain or around any water source.

• Always unplug the grill before performing any service or maintenance .

• If the grill is stored outside during the rainy season or seasons of high humidity, care should be taken to

insure that water does not get into the pellet hopper. Wood pellets, when wet or exposed to high humidity,

expand greatly, break apart, and could jam the feed system.

• Disposal of ashes— Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. the closed container

of ashes should be placed on a non-combustible floor or on the ground, well away from All combustible

materials, pending final disposal. When ashes are disposed by burial in soil or otherwise locally dispersed,

they should be retained in the closed container until all cinders have thoroughly cooled.

• Note: before plugging your KC Pellet GRIll into any electrical outlet, ensure the temperature dial is in

the off position.

• this appliance requires 110 volt, 60hz, 275w, 5 amp service. It must be a 3-prong grounded plug.

• this appliance will work on most GfCI outlets, with a recommended size of 15 amp service.

fUel—WooD Pellets

• Your KC Pellet grill is designed and approved for pelletized, all natural, wood fuel only. Any other

type of fuel burned in this appliance will void the warranty and safety listing.

• Use only all natural wood pellets, designed for burning in grills.

• Do not use fuel labeled as having additives.

• Most pellet mills use the same standards to make “home heating” wood pellets.

• Check with your local dealer on the quality of pellets in your area and for information on what can be

expected from various brands.

• Note: the holland Grill Company assumes no liability caused by the quality of wood pellets you choose.

CReosote

• Do Not operate the appliance if the flame becomes dark and sooty or if the burngrate overfills with pellets.

turn the unit off, let the KC Pellet Grill cool completely, and then inspect the unit. soot or Creosote may

accumulate in the main body and along any air leakage or exhaust areas when the appliance is operated

under incorrect conditions, such as incorrect burn grate position, blockage of the combustion fan, failure to

clean and maintain the burn area, etc.

• soot or creosote is formed when pellets are burned without the correct amount of air to fuel. or incomplete

combustion, thus producing a tar like substance and other organic vapors that combine with expelled

moisture. the smoke will have a black color to it and the residue left behind on surfaces, will also be black

in color.

• When ignited, this creosote makes an extremely hot and out of control fire, similar to a grease fire.

• If creosote has formed within the unit; allow the unit to warm up at a loW temperature, turn off the

appliance, then wipe out any formation with a hand towel. Creosote is similar to tar, when warmed it will

begin to run, become like liquid, and is easier to clean in this state.

• should a grease or creosote fire occur, turn “off” the control and leave lid closed until the fire is out.

Do Not unplug the power cord.

GRILL ENVIRONMENT

1. WHERE TO SET-UP THE GRILL

with all outdoor appliances, outside weather conditionsplay a big part in the performance of your grill and thecooking time needed to perfect your meals. Keep a min-imum clearance of 12 inches from combustible con-structions, and this clearance must be maintained whilethe grill is operational. This appliance must not beplaced under overhead combustible ceiling or overhang.Keep your grill in an area clear from combustible materi-als, gasoline and other flammable vapors and liquids.

2. COLD WEATHER COOKING

follow these suggestions on how to enjoy your grillthroughout the cooler months:

• if smoking at low temperatures fails, increase the tem-perature slightly to achieve the same results.

• organize – Get everything you require ready in thekitchen before you head outdoors. during the winter, move your grill to an area that is out of the wind anddirect cold.

• in very cold weather, increase your preheating time byat least 20 minutes.

• avoid lifting the lid any more than necessary. Coldgusts of wind can completely cool your grill temperature.

• Have a heated platter or a dish cover ready to keepyour food warm while making the trip back inside.

• ideal foods for winter cooking are those that require little attention, such as roasts, whole chickens, ribs, andturkey.

Make your meal preparation even easier by adding sim-ple items such as vegetables and potatoes.

3. HOT WEATHER COOKING

follow these few suggestions on how to enjoy your grillthroughout the hot months:

• adjust your cooking temperatures downward. Thishelps to avoid unwanted flare-ups.

• use a meat thermometer to determine the internaltemperature of your foods. This helps in preventing yourmeat from over cooking and drying out.

• even in hot weather it is still better to cook with the lidof your grill down.

• you can keep foods hot by wrapping them in foil, andplacing them in an insulated cooler. stuff crumpled upnewspaper around the foil and this will keep food hot for3 to 4 hours.

GRILL TEMPERATURE RANGES

Temperature readouts on the control board may notexactly match the thermometer. all temperatures listedbelow are approximate and are affected by the followingfactors: outside ambient temperature, the amount anddirection of wind, the quality of pellet fuel being used, the lid being opened, and the quantity of food beingcooked.

HIGH TEMPERATURE (204-260°C / 400-500°F)This range is best used to sear and grill at a high heat.High temperature is also used to preheat your grill, burn-off the cooking grid, and to achieve high heatin extreme cold weather conditions.

MEDIUM TEMPERATURE (135-177°C / 275-350°F)This range is best for baking, roasting, and finishing offthat slow smoked creation. Cooking at these tempera-tures will greatly reduce the chances of a grease flare-up.

LOW TEMPERATURE (82-122°C / 180-250°F)This range is used to slow roast, increase smoky flavor, and to keep foods warm. infuse more smoke flavor andkeep your meats juicy by cooking longer at a lower tem-perature (low and slow). Highly recommended for thebig turkey at Thanksgiving, juicy ham at easter, or thehuge holiday feast.

TIP: To intensify that savory flavor, switch to sMoKe(low) temperature range immediately after putting yourfood on the grill. This allows the smoke to penetrate themeats, before the pores of the meat close at 49°C /120°f.

The key is to experiment with the length of time youallow for smoking, before the meal is finished cooking.some outdoor chefs prefer to smoke at the end of acook, allowing the food to keep warm until ready toserve.

SMOKING

smoking is a variation on true barbecuing and is trulythe main advantage of grilling on a wood pellet grill. There are two types of smoking: hot smoking and coldsmoking.

• Hot smoking, another name for low and slow cook-ing, is generally done at 82-122oC / 180-250of. Hotsmoking works best when longer cooking time isrequired, such as large cuts of meats, fish, or poultry.

• Cold smoking is when the food is located so far awayfrom the fire that it smokes without cooking, and attemperatures of 15-32oC / 60-90of.

KCP-9

OPERATING YOUR KC PELLET GRILL

UNDERSTANDING THE "P" SETTING

The main benefit to the "P" seT (setting) button is that itallows the cook to have fine tuned control of their grill tocompensate for ambient temperature, humidity, wind, environmental changes, pellet fuel type and quality.

when the recessed "P" seT button is pushed, the “P”setting displayed on the lCd screen will flash andchange to the next value (upward). once P7 is reached,it will restart at P0. There are eight “P” settings, rangingfrom P0 to P7. The recessed "P" seT button can bepushed using a thin-tipped object, such as a pen tip ortoothpick.

iMPorTaNT: do not push the "P" seT button too hard,as this may cause damage. only a light push is needed.

1. USING THE "P" SETTING IN SMOKE MODE

anytime the temperature dial is set to sMoKe, such asthe start-up cycle, the auger will run on more of a manu-al mode of cooking versus using one of the preset dialtemperatures. first, the auger will continuously turn andfeed pellets for four minutes. after four minutes, theauger begins to run a feed cycle based on the "P' set-ting selected on the digital Control board. The defaultsetting is P4.

• MORE SMOKE FLAVOR, LESS HEAT ( “P” SET-TING / FUEL FEED)

when hot smoking – increasing the infusion of morenatural wood flavor – increase the "P" setting to allow forlonger cycles between auger feeds. This results in keep-ing a lower temperature output, which increases cooktime (low and slow). This results in a deeper smoke ringand more smoke flavor. Care must be taken whenusing the higher "P" settings, such as P6 or P7, as thiscould result in the fire going out in the burn pot.

• LESS SMOKE FLAVOR, MORE HEAT (“P” SETTING / FUEL FEED)

a lower "P" setting will result in a higher grill temperatureoutput and higher pellet consumption due to morefrequent cycles.

iMPorTaNT: when selecting a sMoKe setting after atemperature dial preset (such as preheating at highheat), the auger will continuously turn and feed pelletsfor four minutes. This will momentarily raise the temper-ature, but temperature will decrease and stabilize oncethe "P" setting cycle begins (approximately five to tenminutes).

2. USING THE "P" SETTING WITH A TEMPERATUREDIAL PRESET

anytime the temperature dial is set to one of the temper-ature dial presets (95-245°C / 200-475°f), the auger willrun on a controlled setting of pellet feeding to maintainthe preset temperature selected.

once the grill has preheated on sMoKe, select thedesired temperature using the temperature dial presets. The auger will begin to run continuously until the desiredpreset temperature is reached. once reached, the augerwill run a feed cycle based on the "P' setting selected onthe digital Control board, aiming to hold at the presettemperature selected.

NoTe: when using a temperature dial preset, loweringthe "P" setting, such as P1, will decrease large fluctua-tions in temperature. similar to a campfire, fueling theburn pot (fire) more frequently will result in less heatfluctuation.

objects in the auger tube.• Place your hand above the fire pot and feel for air

movement. do not place your hand or fingers inside the fire pot.

• after approximately a minute, you should smell the igniter burn off and begin to feel the air getting warmer. The igniter tip does not glow red hot.

5. Turn the temperature dial to off.6. fill the hopper with all natural barbecue wood pellets.7. Turn the temperature dial to sMoKe. allow the

pellets to ignite and create flame. once flames are coming out of the fire pot, turn the temperature dial to off, and let the grill cool down.

8. after grill has cooled, re-install the cooking components into grill. The grill is now ready to use.

FIRST USE – GRILL BURN-OFFonce your hopper has been primed and before cooking onyour grill for the first time, it is important to complete a grillburn-off.

start the grill and operate at high heat (over 233°C / 450°f)with the lid down for 30 to 40 minutes to burn-off the grilland rid it of any foreign matter.

PREHEATING

it is important to allow your grill to preheat before everycook session. This allows the grill and cooking grids to heatup quicker, kill off bacteria and other pathogens leftoverfrom past grill sessions. Preheat with the lid closed.

IMPORTANT: The outside ambient temperature, weather conditions, and quality of wood pellets will allaffect your cooking temperature. Observe the time ittakes to reach your desired temperature, and adjustyour cooking time as needed.

AUTOMATIC START-UP PROCEDURE

1. ensure the temperature dial is in the off position. Plug the power cord into a grounded power source.

2. Check burn pot to ensure there is no obstruction for proper ignition. open the hopper lid. ensure there areno foreign objects in the hopper or auger feed system. fill hopper with dry, barbecue hardwood pellets.

3. open the grill lid. The lid must remain open during thestart-up cycle.

4. Turn the temperature dial to sMoKe. This will activate the start-up cycle. The auger feed system willbegin to turn, the igniter will begin to glow and the fan will supply air to the fire pot. The grill will produce smoke while the start-up cycle is taking place. The pellets will have ignited once the smoke has cleared. To confirm the start-up cycle has begun properly, listen for a torchy roar, and notice some heat being produced.

5. Preheat your grill. Close the lid. Turn the temperature dial to 177°C / 350°f, to allow the unit to preheat for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

6. after preheating is complete, you are ready to enjoy your grill!

OPERATING YOUR KC PELLET GRILL

IMPORTANT: When selecting a SMOKE setting aftera temperature dial preset (such as preheating athigh heat), the auger will continuously turn and feedpellets for four minutes. This will momentarily raisethe temperature, but temperature will decrease andstabilize once the "P" setting cycle begins (approxi-mately five to ten minutes).

IGNITER FAILURE PROCEDURE

if for any reason your electric igniter fails, check the following steps, or start your grill using the manualmethod.1. Turn the temperature dial to the off position. open

the lid. remove cooking grid, drip pan and heat shield from the interior of the grill. remove all unburntpellets and ash from the burn pot. avoid touching theigniter to avoid injury, as it will be extremely hot.

2. once all parts are removed and cleaned, turn the temperature dial to sMoKe.

Check the following:• Visually confirm that the igniter is working by placing

your hand above the burn pot and feeling for heat.• Visually confirm that the igniter is protruding

approximately 13mm / 0.5 inches in the burn pot.• Visually confirm that the auger is dropping pellets into

the burn pot.• Confirm that the combustion fan is working by listening

for it.

3. if any of the above points are not working, follow Troubleshooting instructions.

MANUAL START-UP PROCEDURE

1. ensure the temperature dial is in the off position. Plug the power cord into a grounded power source.

2. Check burn pot to ensure there is no obstruction for proper ignition. open the hopper lid. ensure there areno foreign objects in the hopper or auger feed system. fill hopper with dry, all natural hardwood barbecue pellets.

3. open the grill lid. remove the cooking grid, drip pan and burn pot heat shield to expose the burn pot. Place a generous handful of pellets into the burn pot. squirt a gelled fire starter, or other appropriate pellet starter, over the top of the pellets. a small amount of solid fuel fire starter, such as one composed of sawdust and wax, or wood shavings, is also appropriate. add another small amount of pellets overthe burn pot.

NOTE: Do not use spirit, petrol, gasoline, lighter-fluid or kerosene for lighting or refreshing a fire in your grill.

4. light the contents of the burn pot using a long match or long-nosed lighter. allow the starter to burn for 3 to 5 minutes. do not attempt to add more starter into theburn pot. This can cause injury.

5. quickly and carefully replace the cooking components to the inside of the grill. The lid must remain open during the start-up cycle.

6. Continue start-up by following steps four through six of automatic start-up Procedure.

SHUTTING OFF YOUR GRILL

1. when finished cooking, turn the temperature dial to 177°C / 350°f and close the lid. let your grill run for 5 to 10 minutes to go through its normal cleaning method. if you have been preparing foods that are extra greasy, allow the grill to burnoff for an extra 10 to 20 minutes. This will reduce the chance of causing a grease fire for the next start-up.

2. once the grill burn-off is complete, keep the lid closedand turn the temperature dial down to 93°C / 200°f for five minutes to allow any pellets to burn out.

3. after five minutes, with the lid remaining closed, turn the temperature dial to off. The grill will begin its automatic cooldown cycle. The auger system will stopfeeding fuel, the flame will burn out, and the fan will continue to run until the cool-down cycle is complete.

USING 100% NATURAL HARDWOOD BBQ PELLETS

barbecue wood pellets are produced by pure raw material (sawdust) being pulverized with a hammer-mill,and the material is pushed through a die with pressure.as the pellet is forced through the die, it is cut, cooled, screened, vacuumed, and then bagged for consumeruse. Check with your Holland Grill dealer dealer for flavors available.

NOTE: Always store wood pellets in a dry area.Avoid any contact or exposure to moisture willresult in lower heat output or cause the pellets toswell and break apart. Use a moisture proof, resealable tub or bucket for proper storage.

KC PELLET GRILL TROUBLESHOOTING

PROBLEM CAUSE SOLUTION

No Power On The Control Board

Not Connected To Power Source

Ensure grill is plugged into a working power source. Remove hopper access panel (see Electric Wire Diagram for diagram), and ensure all wire connections are firmly connected.

Fuse Blown On The Control Board

Remove the two screws on the front facing panel of the hopper, above and below the Digital Control Board. Lift up slightly, and carefully pull it forward. Check the fuse for a broken wire or if the wire has turned black. If yes, fuse needs to be manually replaced.

The GFCI Outlet Has Been Tripped

Remove hopper access panel (see Electric Wire Diagram for diagram), and ensure all wire connections are firmly connected and dry. Ensure GFCI is a minimum 10 Amp service.

Temperature Dial Temperature Dial is still in the OFF position. Turn Temperature Dial to SMOKE to start-up the unit. The LCD screen will light up.

Fire in Burn Pot Will Not Light

Auger Not Primed Before the unit is used for the first time or anytime the hopper is completely emptied out, the auger must be primed to allow pellets to fill the auger tube. If not primed, the igniter will timeout before the pellets reach the fire pot. Follow Hopper Priming Procedure.

Auger Motor Is Jammed

Remove cooking components from the main barrel. Turn Temperature Dial to SMOKE, and inspect the auger feed system. Visually confirm that the auger is dropping pellets into the burn pot. If not operating properly, call Customer Service for assistance or a replacement part.

Igniter Failure Remove cooking components from the main barrel. Turn Temperature Dial to SMOKE, and inspect the igniter. Visually confirm that the igniter is working by placing your hand above the burn pot and feeling for heat. Visually confirm that the igniter is protruding approximately 13mm / 0.5 inches in the burn pot. If not operating properly, follow Manual Start-up Procedure to continue use of grill; however, call Customer Service for assistance or a replacement part.

"ErH" Error Code The Unit Has Overheated, Possibly Due To Grease Fire Or Excess Fuel.

Turn the Temperature Dial to OFF, and allow grill to cool. Follow Care and Maintenance instructions. After maintenance, remove pellets, and confirm positioning of all component parts. Once cooled, turn the Temperature Dial to SMOKE to turn the unit on. If error code still displayed, contact Customer Service.

"ErR" Error Code Temperature Probe wire not making connection.

Remove hopper access panel (see Electric Wire Diagram for diagram), and check for any damage to the Temperature Probe wires. Ensure Temperature Probe spade connectors are firmly connected, and connected correctly, to the Control Board.

"ErP" Error Code Unit Not Turned Off Properly When Last Connected To Power

Safety feature prevents an automatic restart. Turn Temperature Dial to OFF, and wait two minutes. Turn Temperature Dial to SMOKE or desired temperature. If error code still displayed, contact Customer Service.

Power Outage While Unit In Operation.

Flashing Dots On LED Screen

The Igniter Is On This is not an error that effects the grill. Used to show that the unit has power and is in Start-Up mode (igniter is on). The igniter will turn off after five minutes. Once the flashing dots disappear, the grill will begin to adjust to the desired temperature selected.

Proper cleaning, maintenance and the use of clean, dry, quality fuel will prevent common opera-tional problems. when your Holland KC Pellet grill is operating poorly, or on a less frequent basis, the following troubleshooting tips may be helpful.

KC PELLET GRILL TROUBLESHOOTING

Flashing Temperature on LCD Screen

Grill Temperature Is Below 65°C /150°F

This is not an error that effects the unit; however, it is used to show that there is some risk that the fire could go out. Check hopper for sufficient fuel or if there is an obstruction in the feed system. Remove pellets and follow Care and Maintenance instructions. Check grill temperature probe and follow Care and Maintenance instructions if dirty. Check burn pot for ash build-up or obstructions, and follow Care and Maintenance instructions for ash build-up. Check fan. Ensure it is working properly and air intake is not blocked. Follow Care and Maintenance instructions if dirty. Check auger motor to confirm operation (rotation), and ensure there is no blockage in the auger tube.

Grill Temperature On Smoke Is Too High

"P" Setting is too LOW

Turn the temperature dial to SMOKE, push the "P" SET button, and increase the "P" setting. When selecting a SMOKE setting after a temperature dial preset (such as preheating at high heat), the auger will continuously turn and feed pellets for four minutes. This will momentarily raise the temperature, but temperature will decrease and stabilize once the "P" setting cycle begins (approximately five to ten minutes).

Grill Will Not Achieve Or Maintain Stable Temperature

Control Settings The "P" setting is too high. Lowering the "P" setting will decrease large fluctuations in temperature. Push the "P" SET button, and decrease the "P" setting. Similar to a campfire, fueling the burn pot (fire) more frequently will result in less heat fluctuations. A lower "P" setting, such as P1, will provide the most stable temperature.

Insufficient Air Flow Through Burn Pot

Check burn pot for ash build-up or obstructions. Follow Care and Maintenance instructions for ash build-up. Check fan. Ensure it is working properly and air intake is not blocked. Follow Care and Maintenance instructions if dirty. Check auger motor to confirm operation, and ensure there is no blockage in the auger tube. Once all the above steps have been done, start the grill, set temperature to SMOKE and wait for 10 minutes. Check that the flame produced is bright and vibrant.

Lack Of Fuel, Poor Fuel Quality, Obstruction In Feed System

Check hopper to check that fuel level is sufficient, and replenish if low. Should the quality of wood pellets be poor, or the length of the pellets too long, this may cause an obstruction in the feed system. Remove pellets and follow Care and Maintenance instructions.

Temperature Probe Check status of temperature probe. Follow Care and Maintenance instructions if dirty. Contact Customer Service for a replacement part if damaged.

Grill Produces Excess Or Discolored Smoke

Grease Build-Up Follow Care and Maintenance instructions.

Wood Pellet Quality Remove moist wood pellets from hopper. Follow Care and Maintenance instructions to clean out. Replace with dry wood pellets.

Burn Pot Is Blocked Clear burn pot of moist wood pellets. Follow Hopper Priming Procedure.Insufficient Air Intake For Fan

Check fan. Ensure it is working properly and air intake is not blocked. Follow Care and Maintenance instructions if dirty.

Frequent Flare-Ups Cooking Temperature Attempt cooking at a lower temperature. Grease does have a flash point. Keep the temperature under 176°C / 350°F when cooking highly greasy food.

Grease Build-Up On Cooking Components

Follow Care and Maintenance instructions.
