The Historyof
PLASTIC
Plastic is a popular packaging material which is used in almost every industry. Let’s dive into the amazing visual history of the plastics.
HERE THE STORY BEGINS…
In Europe, horn and Tortoiseshell were used in early plastic.
1839 was the year when Charles Goodyear invented the process of “vulcanization.
In early days Mesoamericans made items with natural rubber.
From Celluloid to Synthetic Plastic
1870 was the year when further developed the process of making celluloid.
After two years, Hyatt and his brother went on to patent first plastics injection moulding machine.
In 1856, invented an early celluloid. He called is “Parkesine”.
1909 was the year when Bakelite and an early synthetic plastic was introduced.
From Polyvinyl Chloride to PET
1933 was the year when process of making polyethylene was discovered by researchers at ICI.
In 1941, Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) was first produced.
In 1926, BF Goodrich scientists perfected Polyvinyl Chloride(PVC).
During world war II, the production of plastic was on high demand.
From Polyethylene Bags to Modern Plastic
1954 Giulio Natta discovered polypropylene.
In the same year, extended polystyrene was invented by Dow Chemical .
In 1950’s, First plastic bags were used.
From 1960’s to late 70’s plastics were further toughened and made compatible to use with metals.
In UK, demand for plastics materials stood at 3.7 million tones in 2012, of which packaging took a 44.3%, building and construction 19.2% and automotive 5.9%
In UK, 2.5m tones of plastics materials produced annually. 35% of manufactured plastics products exported.7,500 companies in the sector.
Plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose. The use of plastic in Western Europe is growing about 4% each year. Most families throw away about 40kg of plastic per year, which could otherwise be recycled.
