The History of Lemon and Paeroa Drink

These days we are spoilt for choice when it comes to drink flavours. There are so many to choose from that when we make our decision on what to drink we may overlook so many others that could become our new favourite. One drink that has been around for quite some time and that originated from New Zealand is Lemon and Paeroa. While it may not be as well known or consumed as much as some other beverages, it really is worth a try and the consumer just may find they collect a new favourite refreshing drink to enjoy. Here’s how it all began.

Now owned by Coca-cola Amatil, L&P Brisbane saw its first beginnings come to fruition in March 1910. Robert Fewell was the owner of a property in which a famous spring was situated on. This spring had previously been visited by residents over the years for it’s refreshing waters. In partnership with his brother-in-law, Robert started to market the mineral water once he took ownership of the land and called the company Paeroa Natural Mineral Water Company. After growing the large clientele into a wide area as well as Auckland, Robert Fewell sold the Paeroa Natural Mineral Water Company to Grey and Menzies Limited. Grey and Menzies were a regional and local company who manufactured aerated water.

New Zealand Breweries took control of the business in 1960 however it was still run as Grey and Menzies Limited. This was later to be taken over by Schweppes Limited who created the company Contract Bottlers Limited. At the same time the famous spring was re-developed. A new pump-house was built and the well was lined to a depth of 13m with pipes that were 1.3m in diameter. The British Bottlers Institute Diploma of Excellence was awarded to Lemon and Paeroa in 1969. It was the only product that was outside the British Isles to win the award. With ever growing popularity, the mineral water was starting to be artificially created in several factories around New Zealand as well as the Pacific Islands. Airlines and cruise ships were used to export the product to Australia and checks were constantly done to ensure both the artificial product and the natural spring water were the same.

There were many more changes to ownership for this popular drink however the great taste has remained the same. To get your hands on some of this fantastic Lemon and Paeroa Brisbane head to a store that stocks New Zealand food products or contact a reputable drinks distributor.
