Your Internet Advent

Together we begin another spiritual journey to the feast of Jesus Christ coming into our human flesh. Finding the quiet space not yet captured by the frenzy of “the Holidays” is especially important this Advent season. We are not only preparing to welcome Jesus again into our lives but we are also preparing to form a new parish here this coming year with our neighbors at Transfiguration Church. How do we stay attentive to receiving both these gifts?

Since many of us spend a part of our day on a computer screen, why not use that opportunity to ‘Be Church After Church.’ Here are my updated suggests for finding faith food during Advent on the internet.

A creative classmate, Fr. Med Laz, offers a daily brief story or piece of wisdom at www.treatsforthesoul.org. He describes his goal as “Bringing values and meaning to our troubled world.”

The Dynamic Catholic people suggest that a great Christmas begins with a great Advent. Signing up at www.bestadventever.com will bring you a daily short video that aims to be inspiring and practical.

At www.prayasyougo.org the Jesuits in Britain off a site with the daily scripture with musical accompaniment. Their “Going Deeper” section offer a variety of internet retreats and other Advent resources.

Other reflections based on the daily Mass scripture are from Bishop Robert Barron (www.dailycatholicgospel.com) and at Truequest’s www.takefiveforfaith.com.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

On Saturday, December 7th, at 11 am, there will be a special Mass which will include the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. During the anointing, a priest will pray over the person and mark his/her forehead and palms of the hands with the sign of the cross using the oil of the sick. Anointing of the sick has its roots in the early Church. Chapter 6 of Mark’s Gospel as well as Chapter 5 of the Letter of James speak of it. It began not as last rites, but as something that addresses the human experience of suffering from illness or other physical condition. Historically, the sacrament was in response to that. During the Middle Ages, it became common both theologically and pastorally to anoint only those on their death bead. It was called “extreme unction” and later, “last rites”. That shift which occurred in the 8th century remained for over 1,000 years until the Second Vatican Council brought about a return to the more ancient understanding of the sacrament. The “anointing of the sick” as it was named then would be appropriate for not only those in immediate danger of death, but also any member of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness, a chronic medical or physical condition, someone preparing for surgery, and even the elderly. Anointing of the Sick (as the other sacraments) is not just a private experience. It is important to be aware that this is a prayer of the church. Caring for the sick is a corporal work of mercy and part of the fundamental mission of the Church. People who are suffering because of their illness or disability often feel alienated from their family, friends, church, and even from God. Anointing is one means by which we try to help people be aware that they are not alone, that the Lord and the entire church are with them in this encounter with the cross.

WHO SHOULD RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK?

According to the Roman Ritual, anyone among the faithful “whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age” not only may but should receive the sacrament. Some examples include: A person who is considered in danger of death; A person who has a serious disease or medical condition (e.g. cancer, heart disease,

diabetes, mental illness). The sacrament may be repeated if the person’s condition becomes more serious;

A person preparing for surgery, if a serious illness is the reason for the surgery; An elderly person if they have become notably weakened by age, even if there is no

particular serious illness present; A seriously sick child.

Living Discipleship through Spirit, Gifts, and Service

“ 17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and delivers them out of al their troubles. 18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit. 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all. 20 He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. 21 Evil shall slay the wicked; and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. 22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.”

Psalm 34:17-22

Completed Repairs of Church - We painted and stained church doors, rectory front & back doors. We installed security camera in vestibule, back of church & front rectory office. We repaired 4 stained glass windows by east south of Church. We mudjacked front concrete of church & back of rectory. We removed basement partition wall for larger meeting space. THE SCHOOL B. Repairs in School - We continued to repair and replace sensors in bathrooms. PENDING REPAIRS OF CHURCH, RECTORY, PARKING, & SCHOOL C. Capital repairs - for Church, interior painting and beam repairs. (roof repairs and interior painting for 2020-2021) We will install programmable locks for vestibule & rectory. We will open up the bride’s room to the next room for fellowship. We will rewire speakers & add new speakers to improve sound quality in church. We will resurface small school parking lot. We will change insulation of the stained glass windows in church sometime in 2019-2021. We are reviewing the possibility of handicap access to our cafeteria. We will upgrade / repair gutters of school. We will implement repairs in the AOC facility report (next 5 years). THE SCHOOL D. The four-month period result of operation is not a gauge of School operating result because tuitions are collected in advance

while payroll and other expenses are incurred almost evenly throughout the year. Result of operation will also be impacted by how much scholarship, grant, and fundraising revenue are generated and used to fund the operation of the school.

PLEASE CONSIDER WHAT WE CAN GIVE BACK TO OUR CHURCH AND SCHOOL. PLEASE USE YOUR TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE. Can you help us ? We appreciate and value your support!

St. Nicholas

Saint Nicholas whose feast day is December 6th, was a Christian bishop who helped the needy. After his death, the legend of his gift-giving grew. Saint Nicholas transformed into the legendary character called Santa Claus, who brings Christmas presents to children around the world. Saint Nicholas was born circa 280 in Patara, Lycia, an area that is part of present-day Turkey. He lost both of his parents as a young man and reportedly used his inheritance to help the poor and sick. A devout Christian, he later served as bishop of Myra, a city that is now called Demre. There are many legends about Saint Nicholas of Myra. One story tells how he helped three poor sisters. Their father did not have enough money to pay their dowries and thought of selling them into servitude. Three times, Saint Nicholas secretly went to their house at night and put a bag of money inside. The man used the money so that one of his daughters could marry. On the third visit, the man saw Saint

Nicholas and thanked him for his kindness. Nicholas also reportedly saved three men who were falsely imprisoned and sentenced to death. Saint Nicholas is believed to have died on December 6, 343 AD. Over the years, stories of his miracles and work for the poor spread to other parts of the world. He became known as the protector of children and sailors and was associated with gift-giving. He was a popular saint in Europe until the time of the Reformation in the 1500s, a religious movement that led to the creation of Protestantism, which turned away from the prac t ice o f honor ing sa in ts . Sa in t N icho las , however , remained an impor tant f igure in Ho l land. The Dutch continued to celebrate the feast day of Saint Nicholas, December 6. It was a common practice for children to put out their shoes the night before. In the morning, they would discover the gifts that Saint Nicholas had left there for them. Dutch immigrants brought the legend of Saint Nicholas, known to them as Sint Nikolaas or by his nickname, Sinterklaas, to America in the 1700s. Saint Nicholas went through many transformations in America: Sinterklaas became Santa Claus, and instead of giving gifts on December 6, he became a part of the Christmas holiday. In the 1820 poem "An Account of a Visit from Saint Nicholas" by Clement Clarke Moore, he is described as a jolly, heavy man who comes down the chimney to leave presents for deserving children and drives a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer. The cartoonist Thomas Nast added to the Saint Nicholas legend with an 1881 drawing of Santa as wearing a red suit with white fur trim. Once a kind, charitable bishop, Saint Nicholas had become the Santa Claus we know today.
