IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT“CALLING ALL PARKER PARTNERS AND

FRIENDS”

SEARCH TO BEGIN FORPART-TIME EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

During this coming fall, the Board of Directors for the Foundation will conduct an aggressive search to find a part-time Executive Director to provide leadership in taking the organization to a higher level of giving back to the community of Yakima. It is readily apparent that the Parker Youth & Sports Foundation has grown beyond the capacity of being administered by volunteer staffing. One example of our growth is the exciting fact that during this past fiscal year (2010-11) the Foundation passed the one hundred thousand dollar mark in funds given back to local youth groups and agencies.

The Board has developed a financial and search plan to fund the position for half of the 2011-12 fiscal year, anticipating the hiring of an Executive Director by January 1, 2012.

We Need Your Involvement

The Board is requesting that our Parker Partners and friends examine the summary job announcement and description on page 10 and give consideration to individuals they know that could be candidates for the Executive Director’s position. Contact any Board member or the Foundation office for any nominations you may have.

The search process will officially begin with the taking of applications from mid September to the end of October. Parker Partners will also have an opportunity at the annual meeting of the Foundation on October 19 when they can provide further input about the search, possible applicants, and expectations for the position.

Letter from the PresidentHello Parker Partner and Friends:

Right off the ‘get go,’ my apologies for what will be a lengthy column. June 30 represents the Foundation’s fiscal year end, and we have things to crow about and many individuals to thank for another successful

year. And, we are excited about an important decision your board has made to take the Foundation to a higher level in 2011-12. Let’s start with what’s ahead, such as the annual Foundation meeting set for Oct. 19, 11:30 a.m. at the Clarion Hotel in Yakima. All Parker Partners are invited to attend.

Executive Director Search: I encourage you to read the information in this High Hopes about our announcement to begin a search for a part-time executive director. Rather than repeat the information about the job description, I want to emphasize our invitation to our Partners and donors to participate in our search to find the right person to lead the Foundation. We are looking to you for nominations of potential candidates. Though we would like to find someone by Jan. 1, the board is not on a strict time-line to fill the position. As Mark Twain said, “Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising.” Thus our small Foundation begins our quest to grow.

2010-11 Review. It was just six years ago that the PY&SF began giving back to the community when its first grant of $3,000 was awarded to Yakima Little League for field improvements at the Elks Park. It is with pride that we announce that during this past fiscal year the PY&SF passed the $100,000 mark in giving back to 13 youth programs, Yakima Parks and Recreation, YVCC athletics, and the Yakima Rotary Trust fund for athletic fields.

The sixth annual High Hopes Golf Scramble and Legends Reunion June 10-11 was another success, as approximately $20,000 was raised. Kudos to the golf committee of Eric Carlson, Spud Edmondson, and Virginia Hays for their many hours of work in recruiting teams and sponsors. Kudos to Legends Reunion chairman Mike Welton, who organized a great event that reached a high-water mark on income. Thanks to Tom Garrison for coordinating the auction and to Trudy Bray, who pitched in with everything from making auction signs, rounding up 18 desserts for the dessert raffle and ticket taking on Friday evening to golf registration at 6 a.m. on Saturday! We appreciated Daryl Parker and Bill Faller as the honorary chairmen of the tournament and were so pleased to see Pete Rademacher and Mel Stottlemyre here for the festivities.

During the Reunion we introduced Nancy Leahy, Richard Smith, and Bill Faller, who have graciously accepted our invitation to be honorary directors of the PY&SF. Not only did Nancy attend the Reunion for her well-deserved recognition, she pitched right in with

2extra table decorations and assisted with ticket and auction sales.

Jim Riley and Ray Jensen of Engravings Unlimited were recognized as Contributors of the Year for their ongoing support of the golf tournament and Reunion. Virginia Hays was recognized by the board as Parker Partner of the Year for her many hours of volunteer time in the office as well as her commitment to making the golf tournament and Reunion such a success.

Added to the Reunion program this year was the recognition of Yakima Valley Community College athletic teams that enjoyed an “across the board” year of success, highlighted by the NWAACC championship women’s basketball team and the national champion women’s wrestling team. Jake Fife was recognized as the recipient of the Faller/Brayton Coaches Award for next year as a returning member of the YVCC baseball team. A special thank you to Bob Cordova for his inspirational message as to how his family is dealing with the loss of his daughter. Hannah was a member of the YVCC women’s basketball team who died in an automobile accident one week before the conference tournament.

We have extended our condolences to the families of Pat Fitterer and Bucky Bruns. Kathy Jo Fitterer, Pat’s wife, passed away on June 24, and Bucky died on July 12. Pat and Bucky were part of some real golden years at YVC in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

This issue of High Hopes includes our “Boys of Summer” call for support of the Faller/Brayton Endowment. Thank you for your consideration in supporting the endowment.

We want to extend our appreciation to the Yakima Seniors Golf committee for designating the PY&SF as the benefactor of net proceeds from its fourth annual tournament in May. The Foundation was presented a check for $2,000 in June by Chairman Rich Hilfiker and senior committee members Jim Gosney, Dave Desmarais, Russ Arbuckle, and Jeff Shaw.

In conclusion, and on behalf of the PY&SF board, thank you for your continued support of the Foundation. Small as we may be, we have established our place in the Valley, and good things are happening in youth sports programs because of you.Yours in sports,Jerry Ward, President

Corrections from Vol. 6, Issue 21. The photo of Keith Farnam and Pat Fitterer on page 5: the date should have been 1965.2. The photo with Trudy Bray and Eric Carlson viewing the Pete Rademacher vs. Floyd Patterson should have been 1957.

Corrections from the High Hopes Scramble programArticle on Honorary Co-Chairman Daryl Parker: 1) Born in Seattle; 2) Daryl enrolled at University of Colorado (Frosh) swimming team), USC (3rd team – golf), UCLA and Santa Monica City College (3rd golfer on the team) during a two year span. Finding the academic side of college life not to his liking, Daryl began his work career as a general contractor, surrounding himself with good people and paying attention to the job put him in a successful situation.

Parker-Larson Legacy: “A Walk in their Footprints”

What a pleasure to join Daryl and Sherrie Parker during the weekend of our High Hopes Scramble and Sports Legends Reunion as they hosted a mini-family reunion. Leticia, Scott and Darren Parker joined their father, Daryl, for a grand review of their family legacy in Yakima. It was the first time that all three could attend and the first time in Yakima for Leticia.

To a great extent, the vision and mission of the Parker Youth & Sports Foundation is built upon the legacy of Shirley Parker and his mother, Rose Larson. Daryl’s family toured the Larson Building, the YVCC Campus, Larson Park and Parker Field and enjoyed a meeting with Dr. Linda Kaminski, YVCC president, and Cheryl Hahn, director of the Larson Gallery, where the tour was completed.

Tour Stop 6: The Larson Gallery meeting with Director Cheryl Hahn and YVCC President Dr. Linda Kaminski. Cheryl Hahn had a work party going...weeding flowerbeds, etc.

Tour Stop 1: PY&SF office on the 9th floor of the A. E. Larson Building, a building Daryl’s step-grandfather built. Daryl is convinced his father had the office on the 9th floor around the corner from where the Yakima School Foundation is located, or just to the right of it.

Tour Stop 3: Several moments were spent around the Larson Park sign and then we walked to the Deccio Building where we took pictures at the Parker Plaza which is the area just outside the north doors.

Tour Stop 4: Inside to see the Parker Room and the plaque that is mounted outside the door dedicating the room to the Parker family.

Tour Stop 2: Met at Dunbar Field to view the Larson Park monument that is located inside the Dunbar softball field complex. The monument, originally dedicated August 1, 1947, was recently restored by the college staff.

Tour Stop 5: We then proceeded to Parker Field where Scott, Leticia, and Darren walked the field and took pictures of the PY&SF sign.

Inside the Larson Gallery, from left: Leticia, Scott, Director Cheryl Hahn, Darren, Daryl, Sherrie and Dr. Linda Kaminski.

Check our website for other articles in the historical section referring to other Parker/Larson stories of interest, i.e. Rosedell, A. E. Larson Building, etc.
