Viva EspañaAfter several sojourns to the Ardèche, the annual Year 8
venture to foreign parts found them in Cala Llevadó on the Costa Brava where they obviously enjoyed the
kind of weather most us could only dream of whilst sheltering from the rain in Britain’s wettest of
all summers. Visits to the beach for all kinds of water-based activities were interspersed
with trips to nearby places of interest, including the Barcelona Olympic
Park and the Nou Camp Stadium.

Pickering Paddlers
At the beginning of the summer holiday, members of Year 7 enjoyed a week of activity near Pickering in North Yorkshire and - make no bones about it - they had a whale of a time in Whitby. Fangs for the memory!

Per ardua ad astraOn Sunday 1st July, at the RAF College at Cranwell, Cadet Warrant Officer Alex Sansom was presented with a Geoffrey de Havilland Flying Foundation award for his outstanding achievement as a member of the Combined Cadet Force RAF Section. Alex was one of the six finalists for the Sir John Thomson Sword in recognition of his service to the school RAF Section and his flying achievements. Alex is seen here on the steps of the College Hall Officers’ Mess with medal in hand.
Nulli secundusThe chief guest at Junior Prize Giving in June was Dr James Clackson (OL ). Dr Clackson left LGS in 1984 and is now Senior Lecturer in Classics and Fellow and Director of Studies at Jesus College, Cambridge, as well as currently being the Cambridge University Elected Governor on the LES Board. Music was provided by the Swing Band.
Running in the FamilyMatei Mandache represented the UK at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Argentina in July. Matei was following in his father’s footsteps: he represented Romania in the IMO in 1983.

Fantastic PhysicsFollowing on from the impressive Chemistry and Biology Buildings, the new Physics Building, to be named after Neville Ireland, Paul Fisher’s predecessor, opened for business at the beginning of term. This is Phase 3 of the Science redevelopment at the School and work on the Pullinger Building is already underway to complete the “Science Village at LGS”.

Leaders of the PackUnder the leadership of Head Boy, Will Throp, the new Senior Prefect team assemble for the annual photograph.
Into the Lion’s DenDaniel Ritterband (OL) was the chief guest at this year’s Senior Prize Giving. Since leaving LGS in 1993, Daniel has had a varied career working in advertising and communications for a number of major corporations. He has been Head of Communications for David Cameron and is now Director of Marketing and 2012 Communications for Boris Johnson.
In his speech Daniel said that he was probably more nervous speaking to his old school than to a hall full of politicians and the press.

Eastern Promise FulfilledIt takes about 18 months to plan and organise a foreign sports tour and it can prove a difficult and frustrating exercise, but the success of the Rugby Tour to Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka certainly made all the hard work worthwhile. On the field ten matches were won and one drawn but, much more importantly, all the games were played in a fantastic spirit and many new friends were made.
Off the field the tourists experienced all aspects of life in the Far East from a “posh” reception at the Singapore Cricket Club, hosted by a group of OLs, to rides on bicycle rickshaws in Kuala Lumpur and elephants in Sri Lanka.
One highlight was the visit to our school in Sri Lanka at Batukanaththa where the boys and staff saw at first hand the results of their charitable efforts. A few tears were shed.

From X Block to ExcellenceIn June Year 6 presented a “What done it” as their drama production. What exactly was it that transformed them from not entirely model pupils to academic goody goodies: the X Block Factor.

Al FreezcoOnce again the audience at Al Fresco was treated to a wealth of musical talent and they should be applauded for their fortitude in almost single figure temperatures. However, the variety and quality of the performances was more than enough to keep peoples’ spirits high, suitably aided no doubt by a drop of something warming!
A Lot of Night MusicAs a fitting tribute to the work of Mr Trevor Lax, who retired in July, students past and present put on a wide-ranging programme of, using the word loosely, jazz. The standard of the musicians on show was remarkable and the affection shown for Trevor well-deserved.
High (and Grammar) School Musical
As always the Year 13 leavers from Year 13 presented a colourful, amusing and thoroughly entertaining show as their swansong: this year High School Musical was revisited.
Enchanted ForestsAs is now the custom, each Year 8 tutor group performed a piece of physical theatre, remarkably at the end of only a few hours rehearsal. Grotesque beasts and trees came to life in the actors’ minds and bodies threatening anyone who ventured into the enchanted forest.

Stumped by the Weather!Never before has the 1st XI Square been in almost pristine condition at the end of the Summer Term but, thanks to the almost incessant rain in May and June, very little cricket was played on it this year. Despite having so many fixtures cancelled, the 1st XI had a good season; the U14 XI reached the final of the County Cup, losing to Oakham
under leaden skies; and the U12 XI beat arch-rivals, Leicester Grammar School, to secure the County Trophy.

Back to Business
Spurred on by their memorable tour of South Asia, featured earlier, the 1st XV began their season with a resounding wins over Lawrence Sherriff School and Leicester Grammar School. They were ably supported by younger age groups boding well for another successful campaign.

Lift the Flame on HighAs is always the case with events staged in the town, the Endowed Schools played a huge part, making the journey of the Olympic Flame through Loughborough a memorable occasion. Not only were the streets lined with everyone from all three schools, but the Music School put on a feast of entertainment for the thousands who thronged the Market Place. A superb hog roast and barbecue rounded off the
morning at the Grammar School, thanks to our wonderful catering team.
