Bishop Trimble has invited the Iowa

Annual Conference of the United

in the afterglow of being ordained as

a full elder at Annual Conference that

I write to you and begin to imagine

the future of hope that we will share

together. It is a privilege to be

appointed to Waterloo First as your

pastor and I look forward to the

ministry that we will be partners in.

I believe that there are moments in

every congregation when the Spirit

comes to us and asks our hearts,

“What if?" I trust the people of

Waterloo know this well.

What if we tried things differently?

What if we reached out to our

neighbors? What if we took this

chance or that risk? What if we

imagined a new future? These

questions, these thoughts of “what if”

beg to become something more, and

with the Spirits guiding become

questions of, “What now?” What now

will we not only imagine, but

become? With the foundation that

has been laid, how will we journey

together as a church, and as the Body

of Christ?

In her message during the Ordering of

Ministry service, Bishop Sally Dyck of

the Northern Illinois Annual

Conference reminded us that in our

life as the church we are called to

community, to a way of life that

shares gifts and abilities, talents and

treasures for the sake of the kingdom

of God. Bishop Dyck went on to say,

“No one has all the skills, gifts and

graces…it takes everyone, with all of

the wisdom, compassion and

teaching.” In the years to come, as

we imagine a faithful church and a

healthy world, as we become the

congregation that God invites us to

be, we will need one another, for our

future of hope takes everyone, so

let’s imagine together and change the

world.

and meeting you all.

Events

Hello everyone and happy REAL summer to you all!

While we have slowed down, we still have some things going on this summer, although the dates have yet to be determined.

Well, just because summer is here doesn’t mean that our Youth and Children will be stopping. Slowing down a bit, perhaps, but not stopping. Our lock-in was great fun, and we are looking forward to some more get-togethers this summer.

We will be going to Lost Island in July, and Adventureland in September, so stay tuned!

Vacation Bible School starts on Sunday, June 23rd at Kimball Methodist. It should be a lot of fun for the kids, and is free and open to everyone through fifth grade. Any volunteers to help with Bible Story Time and a meal preparation for Vacation

Bible School at Kimball Methodist would be greatly appreciated. Contact me or Sally for more information.

Gospel Music

Sunday

July 21st

Iowa’s Favorite Men’s Quartet of Gospel Music

Higher Power, a gospel music quartet based out of Des Moines, Iowa will be in concert

at Waterloo First United Methodist Church, on Sunday July 21st. The church service and program will start at 9:30AM. A free will offering will be taken to help this group in their ministry outreach.

Higher Power sings gospel, southern gospel, progressive gospel, a cappella, and contemporary music in its concerts. A typical concert with Higher Power will be filled with music, ministry moments, testimony and reflection. Higher Power provides concerts for churches, community celebrations, and special concert events. This quartet has opened for the Gaither Homecoming Tour and many other professional gospel groups.

Members of the group include Don Elgi (baritone) from Pleasant; Jeff Overton (tenor) from Waukee;

Rod Johnson (lead) from Windsor Heights, Steve Mickelson (bass) from Kelley; and Wes Klobnak

(sound engineer) from Norwalk. Each of the members has a long history of musical experiences. These

experiences range from singing with family groups; singing in elementary, junior high, high school,

and college choirs; singing with other gospel groups; and singing for home church programs.



Thank You I cannot express how much I appreciated everyone who came to share with me in my last worship with you. Your presence was much appreciated and created a wonderful atmosphere

for my closing moments as a pastor. For you who gave to the Love Gift, I thank you for your generosity and expressions of support in this transition point. It will greatly help with the extra cost transitions create. Finally, once more, thanks for allowing me to share the last six years of ministry with you.

Look Toward the Stars “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them,” God told Abram (Genesis 15:5, NRSV). On a clear summer night, especially if you can get away from city lights, try this yourself: “Look

toward heaven and count the stars …. ” Although none of us can count them all, someone has calculated (don’t ask me how!) that if a grain of sand represented a star, you’d need 94,608,000 railroad hopper cars full of sand to represent all the stars of the

universe. If you watched all the cars pass by, one per second, you’d be standing there for three years! As we gaze at the sky on a warm summer night, our minds can’t comprehend such a vast universe. Yet our

hearts can comprehend a God great enough to craft it.

Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones

Twelve, let me repeat twelve, children from the Irving neighborhood and from our church eagerly participated in Camp MusicMania!!

And what an experience it was for each and every one of them! The Camp was held on the campus of UNI from June 10 through the

14th. The theme for the week was “Bones.” Children sang, hip-hopped, danced, played recorders, African Drums, guitars and percus-

sion instruments, made videos using their own claymations and self-made scenery, created music using computers, developed chore-

ography, and participated in drama and improv.

This was all part of the Enriching Lives Through Music and the Arts initiative which could not have happened without lots and lots of

collaboration between Irving parents, students, staff, UNI’s Community Music School, and our church, The First United Methodist

Church. Thank you a thousand times over to all of you who helped make this latest endeavor a success.

Blue Zone Blog #3 Jessica Crouch

Did you find clarity in your purpose since last time? Through many of the bible stud-

ies I have attended, I feel called to serve – now I start the discovery process of

how to do that J.

This time I want to focus on the third healthy habit from the Power 9™: move naturally, know your pur-

pose, down shift, 80% rule, plant slant, wine at 5, family first, belong, right tribe.

According to Blue Zones Project, stress leads to chronic inflammation, which is associated with every ma-

jor age-related disease. Although everyone experiences stress, the world's longest-lived people have rou-

tines to shed that stress. Okinawans take a few moments each day to remember their ancestors, Advent-

ists pray, Ikarians take a nap and Sardinians do happy hour.

We could have a lot of fun reducing our stress this week! In addition to improving your physical and emo-

tional health by finding a stress-relief strategy that works for you, also consider these anti-inflammatory

tips from Dr. Stephen Chaney: no smoking, weight management, exercise, balanced blood sugar, minimal

fats, controlled blood pressure, low glycemic foods, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, resveratrol. I

would add alfalfa and vitamin B – which also helps with stress. Food for thought: many of these nutritional

suggestions for inflammation reduce the stress on our body systems which reduces our chances of major

age-related diseases. Keep nutrition in mind when we get to healthy habit number four and watch for more

about the 80% rule next time.

Exercise Equipment Lying Around?

If you have exercise equipment at home, lying around, not being used, please donate it to the church. As part of WFUMC’s commitment to the Blue Zone project we

are in the process of converting the tower room, on the third floor, to an exercise room for our congregation to share. Details will come over the summer but right now we are accepting donations of hand weights, DVD’s, mats, or even larger equipment you find

yourself no longer using. Give it to the church and then stay tuned and come and use it with your church family!

Dinner with Neighbors Don’t forget Dinner with Neighbors continues during the summer, with something tasty on the grill! Be sure and join us July 17

th and

August 15th at 5 pm.



UMW Scholarships Available

Two college scholarships are available from the UMW to any church member attending undergraduate or graduate school:

The Vera McDonald Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship shall be given to a worthy man or woman pursuing an advance degree from an accredited college or university. The value of the scholarship is $500.00 per academic school semester. An applicant shall be a member in good standing of Waterloo First United Methodist Church. A recipient will not be eligible to receive the scholarship for more than one academic year.

Emma Wilson Memorial Scholarship from Wellington fund: This scholarship shall be given to a worthy man or woman who has completed at least one year of study in an accredited college or university. The value of the Scholarship is $200.00 per academic school semester. An applicant shall be a member of good standing in Waterloo First United Methodist Church. A re-cipient will not be eligible to receive the scholarship for more than two aca-demic years.

To a child, what is more exciting or frightening than the first day of school? There may be a

new teacher, a new classroom, a different school, or new friends. But the Back to

School Project

assures that many at-risk students won’t have to worry about having new school supplies.

“The Kids Will Thank You!”

Last year, nearly 2500 Black Hawk County students were helped with school supplies.

Community help is needed again this year.

Join with others to make this another successful year for all Black Hawk County Students.

Volunteers make the project work. To get involved give us a call.

Ad Team Minutes—May 13, 2013—submitted by Kim Chapman, Secretary Present: Mark Durbahn, Diane Golden, Betsy Bentley, Prudy Klinger, Larry Klinger, Jay Culver, Carolyn Culver, Lorraine Clark, Jack Wright, Mark Ritchie, Toni Brown, Kathy Breckunitch, Phil Miller, Bev McCadam, Mark Sanborn, Sally Thurman, Jessica Crouch, Kathy McFarland, Pastor Dana, Reverend Nate Nims, Kim Chapman The meeting was called to order by Ad Team Chair Mark Durbahn with opening prayer given by Pastor Dana. Reverend Nate Nims was introduced, and members at the table each introduced themselves. Approval of April 18, 2013 Minutes approved as written. Burmese Update/Karen Update Mark Durbahn gave a brief update. Mark and Nate will meet with the Karen people possibly June 30 before their Sunday service. Music Mania Update Fifteen summer applications have been received. There will be a week-long program June 10-14 to be held at UNI. Drivers are needed to transport students. Meals with our Neighbors started about two years ago with 35 people attending the meals. Attendance can now run 50-100 people and has even topped 150. We continue trying to reach the neighborhood families, espe-cially those with children. Sewing and reading classes are offered following the meals. Finance/Budget The finance committee will meet later this week. Committee Reports SPRC—working on new employee handbook, which they hope to have ready next month. Trustees—Pastor Dana reported there is an issue with water leakage in the nursery above the changing room.

There will be a parsonage walk-through; the roof may need replacement soon. Downstairs of the parsonage will be painted, and the carpeting will be cleaned.

Education—Sally reported high school graduates were honored at Sunday services. Vacation Bible School will be June 23-28 and held at Kimball Avenue United Methodist. Rally Day is scheduled the Sunday following Labor Day.

Missions—Toni Brown reported missions will be spotlighting a monthly project. Foundation—Phil Miller reported this committee meets as needed. Lay Leader, Jessica Crouch—the tower room will become an exercise area this fall on Wednesday evenings

during other Wednesday night activities. “Blue Zones is everywhere!” Outreach—Jack Wright reported Community Meals are served weekly at Kimball Avenue United Methodist

Church; we are responsible for one meal a month. 150-200 people are served. We are Partners in Education with Irving School, and we participate in Meals on Wheels.

United Methodist Women—Lorraine Clark is the outgoing chair; Carolyn Culver is the new chair. This group meets monthly.

Membership—Bev McCadam reported there are three new visitation teams for a total of thirteen teams. There are two new homebound communion teams.
