HANDS-ON MISSION

In August, the Church Council received a report outlining an approach of HOW Wesley Memorial will emphasize these disciplines in our mission TO MAKE DISCIPLES. During the next two months, we will be working on the third and final question in the model WHAT will this look like? The final results coming in the form of a “Strategic Plan” will be pre-sented to the Charge Conference scheduled for Tuesday, November 15. Welcome Bishop LeelandYou are invited to welcome Bishop Paul Leeland and his wife, Janet, to the Western North Carolina Conference on Sunday, October 9, 2016, at a Service of Celebration at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 2400 Della-brook Road, Winston-Salem, NC. The Service will begin at 3:00 pm and a reception will follow.

Legacy Giving Wesley Memorial has received three legacy gifts. • We received a gift from a charitable remainder

trust established by the late George and Mollie Marsh in 1991. The Marshes were long-time and faithful members of Wesley Memorial. George died in 2008 and Mollie in 2015. When the gift was conveyed to us, their daughters requested that the funds be added to the Wesley Memorial Facilities Endowed Fund, which helps provide for the ongo-ing maintenance of our campus and buildings.

• David Hayworth made a gift to the Wesley Sing-ers Endowed Fund. David is a life-long member of Wesley Memorial and “enjoys the music from the Chancel Choir.” The Wesley Singers Endowed Fund was established with major gifts from the estates of Jane and Jim Marlowe and Ruby Stanford to enhance the traditional music ministries by pro-viding funds to engage trained voices; primarily undergraduate and graduate music students – to sing in the Chancel Choir.

• Mike and Susan Samuel have named Wesley Me-morial as a co-beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Mike and Susan are active in many ways in the life and ministry of Wesley Memorial. The Samuels gift is undesignated and may be used in any manner that promotes the mission of Wesley Memorial.

We are grateful to these donors whose gifts help us fulfill our mission to make and sustain spiritually healthy followers of Jesus Christ who live in ways that transform our world.

If you would like to know more about legacy giv-ing and/or the endowed funds at Wesley Memorial, contact Scott Howell, Director of Administration and Finance, at [email protected] or 336-812-4800.

Third Quarter Giving StatementsAlmost 98% of Wesley Memorial’s operating budget is supported by our generous members and friends through their annual pledge commitments. To ensure that the church’s records are in line with our donor’s personal records, we send out quarterly giv-ing statements. In October,

1. Payments received January 1-September 30, 2016 (Payments received prior to January 1 appeared on your 2015 giving statement while payments received after September 30 will ap-pear on your year-end giving statement.)

2. Balance on your 2016 pledge commitment (this will reflect payments made in prior years).

When you receive your statement, please take a moment to verify that for accuracy. If you have any questions, please contact Deanie Simmons at [email protected] OR 336-812-4801.

Ideally, at the conclusion of the third quarter, everyone will have paid at least 75% of the annual pledge. If you are at or above that level, THANK YOU. If you are behind, please consider making a pledge payment at your earli-

est convenience. We realize that some people pay their enitre pledge in November and December; we look forward to receiving your generous support, as is your custom.

Columbarium ALMOST CompleteOur addition to the columbarium will be finished in early Octo-ber. Once complete, our special “Construction Price” will be discontin-ued and the price of a columbarium niche will be $1,150. If you are interested in securing a niche for yourself or for

a loved one, please contact Cindy Dominick at [email protected] or call her at 336-812-4814.

Consecration Sunday SAVE THE DATEConsecration Sunday is the day we celebrate our congregation’s generosity as we formally receive our pledge commitments in support of the 2017 operating budget. This year, Consecration Sunday will take place on Sun-day, November 20.

We will gather for two worship services (one contemporary & one traditional). In between, we will share a meal together and engage in a special “Thanksgiving” mission project. It will be an exciting day as we joyfully give thanks to God and support our congregation’s purpose “to make and sustain spiritually healthy followers of Jesus Christ…”

Save the Date! Election Night CommunionThis year on Election Day at 7 pm, as results roll in, you are invited to come join your Wesley Memorial family in a service of prayer, worship, and commu-nion. Instead of being glued to the television to find out who will be our next president, we invite you to come to the church, to remember and proclaim our God, the King of Kings! The Senior Adult Coun-cil proudly sponsors this event. Invite your friends, your family, and those across the aisle from you for an evening of reconciliation, prayer for our nation, and worship of God on November 8 at 7 pm in the Sanctuary.

Wesley Handbell

Choir

If you are hearing bells it must be October at Wesley Memorial!

The Wesley Handbell Choir is for children in grades 2-5 and rehearses on Wednesday afternoons from 4:15-5 pm, no previous music experience necessary. They will ring for 11 am worship on October 9. The JuBELLation Handbell Choir is a choir for students from 6th grade-college and rehearses on Sunday afternoons. JuBELLation Choir rings for worship on October 9. Chancel Bells is the adult handbell choir and rehearses on Thursdays from 7-8:15 pm. Chancel Bells ring for worship on October 30. Kindra Ingram, Cindy Webb, Carolyn Shaw and Carol Huff comprise the Handbell Quartet and they will be ringing for worship on October 16. If you would like to participate in any one of these choirs please contact Anne Carroll.

Children’s Music will rehearse for the first time this year on Sunday, October 30, from 9:30-9:45 in the Children’s Gathering Space. Parents can drop children off and pick them up after Sunday School. Children in Kindergarten-5th grade gather 3-4 times during the year to work on music for special worship services. This session begins with work on an anthem to be sung at 11 am on December 11 entitled “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus.” This is a great opportunity for children to use their talents praising God and to learn to play new and interest-ing instrumental accompaniments.

The Chancel Choir and Wesley Singers (formerly Choral Scholars) use the month of October to pre-pare and polish anthems for worship and special services through 2016. They have special anthems for All Saints Sunday, Commitment Sunday, Advent, A Service of Lessons and Carols and the Christmas Eve Lovefeast. Some of these anthems and services will incorporate brass choir, string quartet and chamber orchestra. Our Wesley Singers will be fea-tured singing special anthems for worship this fall. Watch upcoming HeartBeats and the Wesley Weekly for more detail.

If you would like to sponsor an orchestra instrument for one of our upcoming special services or an an-them to honor or memorialize a loved one, contact Anne Carroll. Anthem Angels purchase anthems from a list compiled by the Director of Music and each time “your” anthem is sung, or when “your” instrument is played in worship, a note about your memorial or honorarium is placed in the bulletin. Thank you to all our past Anthem Angels and instru-ment sponsors. You make it possible for us to con-tinue to purchase new anthems to enhance worship.

Introducing our first ECO-Classroom!WMS teachers were super-excited after attending training at GTCC to learn how to develop an ECOL-OGY-Classroom. We believe that we serve children well when we turn their senses to the textures, col-ors, sounds, and smells of the stones, the trees, the flowers, and the animals - - God’s creations. Contact with nature brings simplicity back into the lives of children: the simplicity of nature’s pace, the simplic-ity of the seasons. Therefore, each class at WMS (including our babies!) will now have one special day per month to visit our new ECO-Classroom. Here children will experience a brief lesson about earth, air, water, plants, or perhaps meet a surprise crea-ture! Susan Kelley will plan and facilitate a nature lesson, and alongside teachers, guide discoveries that await the children in this amazingly beautiful space! It is our goal to foster attitudes of reverence toward God’s natural world. Our ECO-Classroom will also show children how they can be good stewards in caring for Mother Earth with sound environmen-tal practices such as RECYCLING. Drop by for a tour of C216 on the preschool hallway! Meet our baby bearded dragon, “Harmony!”

AUTUMNFEST!Friday, October 14, 9:30 am-12:30 pmFun-filled, total school event seeks to support children’s imaginations as well as enhance concept learning about God’s World in Fall. Opportunity for WMS parents, grandparents & church members to interact with us for an exciting school day! Each class will rotate to 7 outdoor activity stations. Au-tumnfest stations will include:

Blue Grass Music & Dancing (provided by Don Jones & his Banjo Band)Build-a-ScarecrowHayride Wagon-Pull Pumpkin Patch TalesMini-Pumpkin Hillside Roll Mural-on-the-Fence (painting with squirrel “tails” and scarecrow “hands”)Farm Fun Snacks

We would welcome additional adult help… choose to walk alongside a class & participate in activities; or volunteer to assist at one station. Call the Susans, 336-884-4232.

FALL “BOOKANEER FAIR!” Oct 24-28 (Mon-Fri)8 am-1 pm in Media Center Pirate ShipSCHOLASTIC BOOKS and USBORNE BOOKSWalk the plank, Mate, to enter the “ship’s stock” of new, inexpensive paperbacks and beautiful hard-bound children’s books. Craft kits and stocking stuffers, too. Be on the lookout for visiting Clifford the Big Red (Pirate) Dog! Did you know? Children are more likely to become avid readers when they have a few books of their own. Buy a book for a child and you’ve given a Treasure!

WMS boys and girls raised $1,417.38 for their Children’s CROP Hunger Walk!

Feet on the Street Thirty-one persons from Wesley Memorial put their feet on the street in the annual Crop Walk to combat hunger in our community and around the world. Al-though we haven’t collected all the money raised, it appears that Team Wesley Memorial raised approxi-mately $2,500 from sponsors and donations given through a special offering. Wesley Memorial School held a mini-walk on Friday, September 23 and raised $1,417.38. Thanks to our walkers and sponsors for making this a successful project. (See related article about the Wesley Memorial School mini-walk on page 7)

A Team of WorkersMost of us want to be part of a team/group who does something and makes a difference. This is exactly what happens with our Wesley 100/United Methodist Men. These men not only meet monthly for a delicious breakfast, they are also the “Holy Chefs” at Wesley Memorial. They prepare and serve many of our meals as well as prepare and serve meals for community groups (e.g., High Point Central Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, class reunions, the Rotary Barbecue, Boy School Council). When they are not cooking, they are cutting and selling Christmas Trees and doing building projects on our campus, at The Children’s Home, Hinton Rural Life Center, and Habitat for Humanity. All the money they raise, they turn back into projects at Wesley Memorial and around the community and world. Our Wesley 100/United Methodist Men are truly part of our mission to “live in ways that transform the world.”

The Wesley 100/United Methodist Men would be glad for any man to join them for breakfast on the third Saturday in each month at 8:00 am in the small dining room.
