The Butte Miner cites the case
of the Wheatland election to justi-
fy Gov. Stewart in using his au-
thority to veto the county bills
that were passed by the Thir-
teenth Legislature. The Miner
claims that the voters residing in
that territory were opposed to
county division. If the Miner will
take the trouble to investigate the
vote they will find that eighty per
cent. of the citizens voted in favor
of division, but that the creation
was defeated by the outrageous
provisions of the Leighton law.
The measure was carried by a
very large vote in the Meagher
and Sweet Grass territory, but de-feated in Fergus by a vote of 27
to 11.
The Miner endeavors to justify
the action of the Governer for up-
holding a condition where 27
voters can defeat the will of 700. I
The unfairness of the Leighton
new county bill compelled the
citizens to try to get relief from it
by appealing to the Legislature.
When the petitions were circu-
lated for Wheatland county over
half of the voters in the Fergus

The law should be amended sothat a majority of the total vote
would carry, not a majority ofof

of Representatives of the last legib- Dlature, but the Senate saw fit to T

It has been reported to this
office, on good authority, that
r some of Hedgesville's citizens Pthat were opposed to county divi- g
sion threatened some voters who n
were in favor of it, and told them c
if they voted for it they would re-.
ceive no consideration in business 1I
r or any other way in town. That
they would know how every man d
7 voted.
We believe that every one has a
V right to vote as he thinks. The 9
people of Hedgesville had a per- t
feet right to vote and work against i
I county division, but when they
a use threats to make some vote
e their way, they are a blot on civil-
t ization. But what can you ex-
pect when the paper of the town

r' ing in their vicinity.
With the general use of auto-
mobiles throughout this state the
cry for better roads becomes louder I1every day. Each person who ever
rides in one becomes a booster for
good roads. In former times the
team could pull through the mud
and slush but would haul butsmall loads. When an auto is
stuck in the mud it is helpless.
