Welcome to
the October
edition of
‘The Hampton
Viewer’
Well, the summer, as dismal as it
was, is now officially over and we are
now bang in the midst of Autumn. As
always, autumn brings Half term
school holiday, Halloween and Bonfire
night. On pages 36/37, there are lots
of activities/events for entertaining the
children on these occasions and
there’s also some great events you
may enjoy yourself.
This year the popular Firework
Fiesta normally held at Ferry Meadows
is now going to be held at The East of
England Showground on 3rd
November - for more details see
page 6. We are told, this will be a
bigger and better event than before -
so don’t miss it!!!
Also, it was great to see so many
people enjoying The Italian Festival
held on 15th and 16th September at
the Cathedral Square, soaking in the
Italian culture and the whole of the
Peterborough community coming
together. The star attraction was
celebrity Gino D’Acampo, who made
his first visit to Peterborough on the
Sunday to close the Festival. It was a
pleasure to see him and I did manage
to get his autograph!!!
Finally, if you know of any charities
or voluntary organizations that need
to advertise local events, please do
get in touch, we will be happy to
include it in the next edition.
Until next month!

LAWN CARE IN OCTOBER
Autumn Feed This feed is another important part of any lawncare programme. Feed with a fertiliser high in Phosphate and Potassium with additional Iron for that dark green look.
Aeration Soil compaction is a frequent cause of turf deterioration and moss invasion so we recommend aerating in autumn/winter; over sow with seed to help any bare areas re-establish before weeds and moss do!
Worm Casts This month will probably see the appearance of worm casts (small mounds of earth brought to the surface by worms). Treatments can be applied to stop the casts occurring in the first place.
Moss Moss will start to encroach now and it is advisable to treat now before it competes with the lawn. Our fertiliser contains extra iron to help reduce the moss problem.
Actions required in Autumn Autumn feed / Moss Control improves colour and controls moss: Aerate lawn - Relieves compaction and prepares soil for sowing extra seed Worm Casts - Brush off when dry or treat with a pesticide Moss - Treat moss
Some of the above tasks can be carried out by the lawn owner; other tasks may need
some professional intervention

BEAUTY
Tools of the Trade
N o make-up artist would be without a
quality brush set. It provides all the
tools needed to sculpt, conceal and
enhance, whilst ensuring an even
application of any product. Make-up
brushes come in many shapes and sizes,
and each has its own job. The most
essential are:
Foundation brush - this ensures that a
totally flawless finish is created. It makes
liquid foundation easy to apply and
guarantees an even covering.
Concealer brush - allows for precision
when concealing any blemish, dark circle or
imperfection.
Powder brush - foundation should always
be set with powder and this brush offers
the perfect covering.
Blusher brush - a good blusher brush will
effortlessly sculpt the cheekbones and
provide a well- blended hint of colour.
Eyeshadow brushes - recent make-up
trends have dictated that the focus is on
lips rather than eyes, however eye-shadow
shouldn’t be overlooked. Swap dark
shades for a neutral and natural palette
and use your eye-shadow brushes to create
definition.
Always remember to contour the eye by
applying the lightest colour to the inner
corners and under the brow bone,
mid-colour to your socket and darkest
shade to the outer corners.
Lip brush – after trying a lip brush you
won’t ever want to be without one.
Defining the lips is made easy, and colour
looks even and natural.

‘natural’ or ‘bristle’ are often made from
squirrel, pony, sable or goat hair, so make
sure they’re 100% cruelty free before you
buy.
‘Synthetic’ brushes are often far cheaper and
mimic the feel of natural bristle.
Problem? No Problem
Professional make-up artists have a solution
for any problem. Here are a few top tips.
Under-Eye Dark Circles Firstly, prepare the skin under the eyes with
an eye gel. Using the correct brush, apply
concealer that’s two shades lighter than
your foundation - yellow toned versions
work well on ivory/beige coloured skin - to
the entire area. Use your finger to blend,
using a ‘tapping’ motion.
When you apply your foundation over an
area that’s just been concealed, be sure to
use the same ‘tapping’ motion that you did
to conceal it, otherwise you will just be
wiping away the product & revealing the
dark area.
Under-Eye Puffiness A common mistake that many women make
is to try to disguise puffy eyes by using a
light coloured concealer. This only draws
attention to the problem. The key is to
highlight the shadowy area underneath the
puffiness to create balance and even out the
look of the under-eye area.
After applying foundation, use a light-
reflecting liquid concealer or highlighter and
apply just under the puffiness, where the
shadowy area is being created, not on the
eye-bag itself. Blend by patting the product
into the skin.
Over-Plucked Eyebrows Finding the right shape eyebrow for your
face is essential, so take care not to over-
pluck. However, if your eyebrows are a little
sparse, there’s no need to worry, as you can
create the look of naturally full brows by
using either eye-brow pencil or powder.
Mimic your natural brows by using feather-
like strokes when you apply, and be sure
never to draw a straight or solid line.

The Whinge
Presenting the Case for the Prosecution, M’Lud
m mm! Last month I told you about my
supe r -e x tens i ve
holiday travel preparations all in
aid of ensuring that the trip
would be stress free and the
holiday would start early.
Hmmm!
I just missed one tiny detail.
Prior to the holiday my wife and
I spent an inordinate amount of
time viewing and trialling suit-
cases. We have two large very
sturdy cases and one half size
of equal stability. These are
very strong bags that we’ve had for over 10
years with barely a scratch on them. You
can throw them around and treat them with
wanton abandon, you can even sit on them
and they will withstand the treatment with
an almost dismissive snort as they just stare
back at you saying “Is that all you’ve got?
Pah!”.
The only mark on them is a yellow crayon
mark from the last time we visited the States
nearly 11 years ago.
However, because my daughter is getting
older and now has more clothes that take
up more room – and because we wanted to
take an empty case with us – we decided to
buy another case.
Since we bought our existing cases many
things have changed: weight limits on flights,
and the strength of lightweight materials
being the major influences on modern
suitcase design. It’s now all about the
lightness and our current cases, though very
strong are also quite heavy at nearly6kg
each. Modern cases come in at almost half
that. They can also be a little bigger for their
weight – all because of the strength and
durability of modern materials. I’m not bitter
about the cost, but I do think we could have
probably posted our luggage to the States
using air-mail in both directions and it would
have been cheaper.
So we bought the biggest,
lightest and strongest that we
could – deciding on this took
weeks of touring round
department stores, sieving
through on-line reviews, and
making pro-con lists. After all of
this you’d think we’d have the
perfect case. After all we’d
thought of absolutely every
eventuality. Apparently though,
we hadn’t thought of
everything; we’d forgot one
very simple situation.
The taxi turned up on time,
pre-booked weeks in advance to take us to
the hotel for the night prior to our flight.
Everything looked like it was going
according to plan – stress free holiday here
we come. Hmmm!
The tiny detail I forgot: this new case was
quite a bit larger than our existing cases all
together they took up rather a lot of space.
Basically, they wouldn’t all fit in the taxi.
The driver and I spent about 45 minutes
trying all sorts of different configurations
trying to get them in. We even took out the
spare wheel to try and fit one in the space –
no dice. Eventually we had to make a
decision; so one of the suitcases had to go
on the back seat and my daughter had to
squeeze into the spare wheel space. She’s
still young and supple so that was the easiest
solution because I didn’t want to have to
leave any of the cases behind because I’d
spent so long making sure each of them
were balanced within the weight limits. Also
we’d upgraded our flights so we had a large
weight limit and I didn’t want to waste that
either. And anyway being cramped-up for
a bit might stop her growing for a bit and
she might then have her clothes long
enough to actually wear them before
they’re too small. But that’s a whinge for
another day.

A night of good cheer with beef
and beer
A new night out to bring some cheer to the long autumn nights has been added to the area’s social calendar.
“Beef and Beer”, is a special event to raise funds for the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall hospice in Peterborough.
Delicious sirloin of beef carved at the table and unlimited Ufford ale will be served during a four-course dinner at
Greetham Valley Hotel on
Friday 16th November.
Billed as “the ultimate party of the year”, the evening will include casino tables and an auction as well as enter-tainment from singer Peter Jay to make the evening go with a swing.
Organiser Jackie Page said “This is a black tie event with a difference which we are confident will become one of the areas most popular nights out.”
Tickets are £49 a head and transport to and from Thorpe Hall in Longthorpe is also available for £10 each. If you want to make a weekend of it, the hotel is offering discounted accommodation and golf.
All proceeds from the event will go towards patient care at the hospice.

In The Night Sky #19
Y ou will have heard that Pluto is not a
planet but is a dwarf planet; this was
decided by the IAU (International
Astronomical Union) on 24 August 2006 at the
26th General Assembly in Prague (resolutions
4A and 5A for those who like all the details).
This isn’t the first time a planet has been
demoted; Ceres was originally described as a
planet when it was discovered in 1801. It was
soon to be described as a minor planet and
often a large asteroid.
However, just how many minor planets are in
our Solar System. Unfortunately, nobody
knows yet. Because although there is a
definition it’s still quite vague; a planet or
dwarf planet needs to have “sufficient mass
for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body
forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic
equilibrium (nearly round) shape” as well as a
couple of other criteria. So there might be a
large number of large asteroids that could be
classified as dwarf planets because in the
Asteroid Belt and Kuiper Belt there are
probably hundreds of candidates. Although
NASA track a considerable number of objects
in these areas they can’t necessarily
determine their size or shape accurately
because of the number of objects and the
relative darkness of them – that was the
problem with Ceres. Even though Ceres is
close to Earth you won’t be able to see it
without a very good telescope, & this is why
you don’t hear much about the dwarf planets
- they’re hard to see and don’t do much.
The NASA image below shows the relative
sizes of the planets and named dwarf planets,
but you probably won’t even see the dwarfs
on this page because they’re that small – but
they are there honest. If you have got a very
good scope Hallow’en will be a good night to
spot Ceres because it will be still relative to
Earth at 2100hrs. But if not, head over to the
NASA website for some pictures.
Happy night watching.

For October 2012 - By Astrologer Christine Chalklin
LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 Whatever you have been through during
this time you will have learned a lot. Task
master Saturn leaves your sign on the 5th
and won’t be back until September 2039!
now put difficult times behind you. The new moon
in your sign on the 15th heralds the start of creative
new projects.
SCORPIO OCT. 24 - NOV. 22 October marks a new cycle for Scorpios.
Mars, one of your planetary rulers, leaves
your sign for adventurous Sagittarius on
the 7th
and communicative Mercury will
have arrived on the 5th
. The biggest challenge is
responsible Saturn arriving for his 2 ½ year stay on
the 6th
. Its time to re-focus on your goals.
SAGITTARIUS NOV. 23 - DEC. 21 This month turns your attention towards
demands in your personal life. Striking a
balance between energy spent on work
and energy spent on domestic matters is
essential now. Sun and Mercury in balanced Libra
will help you to get your message across in a
diplomatic but firm manner.
CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 Expansive Jupiter is in a pivotal sector of
your chart and work and health matters
come to the forefront. A blast of
personal energy comes your way as
Saturn, your ruler, urges you to focus and show your
leadership skills. Inspired with new confidence
you’re at your most convincing this month.
AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18 October highlights your ambitions and
your purpose as duty bound Saturn
arrives at the highest point in your chart.
Your sense of achievement is heightened
and it is a good time to develop new business plans
and goals. The new moon on the 15th
brings
opportunity for an exciting new adventure.
PISCES FEB. 19 – MARCH 20 Change is in the air for Pisceans during
October. Although your home and family
are highlighted, there is also a distinctive
pull toward excitement and adventure.
You know that you want to shine, and with
energetic Mars in daring Sagittarius you are open to
exciting and challenging ideas.
ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 Financial planning is on the agenda for
October. Responsible Saturn moves
into the monetary area of your chart &
demands a review. Benevolent Jupiter
urges you to communicate in a different way and
as your ruler Mars changes signs on the 7th
, new
ways of improving your capital could emerge.
TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 In October, the love planet Venus
travels through the joy & romance area
of your chart. You’ll need to scrutinise
your resources and your relationships
very carefully. What is not working and what has
to go? The warrior planet Mars is also in Scorpio
until the 7th
bringing some radical change!
GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 October brings change to your working
methods. New career opportunities
could now become apparent as
motivational Mars energises this sector.
With Venus, the planet of beauty, now in industri-
ous Virgo you’ll also be looking at radical ways to
change your appearance improve your health.
CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 Romance and partnerships are high on
the agenda for you during October!
This should turn out to be a transfor-
mational month as you review your
relationships and decide if they are going where
you want them to. Creativity is also highlighted &
your mind will be full of new and inspirational
ideas.
LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 There is plenty of activity on the home
front for Leos during October. Energetic
Mars asks what needs improving but
stern Saturn demands you check how
resourceful you can be. With Inspirational Venus
in industrious Virgo it shouldn’t be too hard to
start up new projects and see them through.
VIRGO AUG. 24 - SEPT. 22 October’s planetary aspects bring
passion and excitement to normally
reserved Virgos. Maverick planet
Uranus & Expansive Jupiter are in pivotal
sectors of your chart & new ideas for money making
schemes present themselves. Communication is
on the agenda, but with a completely new angle.
