Guns Attack,

October and the beginning of November proved to be a great time for our

unit and the ACB! Not only did we show our unit pride in supporting the

FRG, but we conducted critical training at Fort Rucker (Dunker Training) as

well as here at Fort Hood. It takes engaged leaders to successfully and safely

accomplish our training plans, build esprit-de-corps, and ensure we negotiate

this period of transition—Soldiers and Families PCSing and ETSing.

Periods of Transition are typically the most tumultuous and dangerous for

our Soldiers. I expect that we will see numerous Soldiers and Families leave

our formation from now through the beginning of February as well as a few

new faces coming in. I know we will accomplish all of our training

requirements while taking care of Soldiers, always! I ask that we take extra

care to address risk during these periods of transition.

For Halloween this year, Guns Attack put on a wonderful

Trunk-o-Treat and Haunted Hangar for our Families. I am

very proud of every company for making this an event to

remember! Julia and I know our kids had a great time and

Delta Company’s haunted hangar (coordinated by Mrs. Niki

McCoubrey) did not disappoint! We were all amazed at the

level of effort put into the vehicle decorations as well as the

time spent making the haunted hangar spooky enough to

scare some of the adults. Thanks again to our FRG

volunteers for dedicating their time!

On November 1st, COL Mendenhall held the inaugural

1ACB Officer and Warrant Officer of the Quarter Board.

We had LT’s Arrington and Goodwin along with CW2

Hughes represent themselves and our Battalion with

distinction. All three gave tremendous effort in preparing

and standing before the board members while answering

questions about 1st CAV’s history, Safety, Family programs,

and Doctrine.

As we approach Thanksgiving and the Holiday period, let

us all remember those who are serving in harms’ way and let

us be grateful for what we are blessed with.

As I close, I want to remind everyone that we anticipate

our 4-227th ARB Holiday Formal “Resilient Together” on

13 DEC from 1800-2200 in the Club Hood Ball Room to be

a great success. We will show our Guns Attack pride while

enjoying a wonderful meal, music, and poignant words from

our guest speaker, MG Ierardi.

As always, it is an honor to serve as your commander. Take an active role in making the Army and

this unit better every day!

GUNS!!

October has flown past, placing Halloween in our rearview mirror for another year. Great showing

at the battalion Haunted hanger and Trunk-or-Treat, thanks to everyone for coming out and

participating in the fun. Thanks also goes out to all the company reps for their time spent setting up the

haunted hangar and everyone that decorated their vehicle. The holiday season is fast approaching and

we have many activities planned, from the battalion formal, to a TOCEX, leading up to gunnery in

January, and we also have airfield gate guard. So stay focused on the tasks at hand and remember

preparation is the key to mission success. Congratulations also to SPC Yetter from A Co, for winning

the Soldier of the Month board for October, great job!

With Thanksgiving approaching quickly, remember SAFETY first, when cooking your turkey or

ham. Whether you’re baking, smoking or frying, be aware of unforeseen events. A cooking fire can

turn a holiday feast into a Family tragedy; make safety part of your cooking recipe. Have a safe and

happy holiday season!!

Keep up the good work!!!

Bounty Hunters Family,

The holidays are finally approaching, and we are preparing for many activities from the Holiday

Formal to the field exercises in the coming months. We have been running at full speed and starting to

feel the effects of the personnel leaving our formation as we talked about last month. Even though

many of our new Soldiers will be showing up after the New

Year, a few have shown up this past month. It is great to see

new faces in our formations, as we welcome PV2 Alexander

Jackson and PV1 Malik Willis, who have recently joined the

Bounty Hunters Family. We hope to mentor and build our

team through hard work and dedication, so that we can be

ready for any mission that comes our way.

This month was full of a number of really important

promotions and reenlistments. Congratulations goes out to

SSG Thomas Childers and SSG Lacresha Riddle, who were

promoted to Sergeants First Class. This is a big step in their

career progressing, and we know that no matter where they

end up the Army is going to benefit from these promotions.

Re-enlistments included SPC Joseph Wood, SPC Marvin Rozier, SPC Raphel Palmore, SGT Moses

Ramos, and SPC Dominique Hughes who will all be priceless assets to

the United States Army. We wish all of these fine Soldiers the best of

luck as they continue to push forward with their careers.

On a spookier note, 1LT Ables took 1st place for the spookiest

trunk during our battalion Trunk-or-Treat, with over 30 vehicles

participating. This was a great event, and our Bounty Hunters

represented with some really great trunks, along with plenty of candy

for the kids. Everyone that came out to support this great event were

glad that they did.

It is important for us to be well prepared for any future operations

that may arise by getting trained up the best we can. The coming

month will prove to be busy as we prepare for our upcoming field

exercise. We will continue to drive on and would like for everyone to remain SAFE as we continue to

train-up for our future deployment.

A CO Panthers

Commander: CPT Ian Benson

First Sergeant: 1SG Julius Decipulo

Family and Friends of the Panthers,

October has been another busy month for the Panthers. Weapons qualifications and the APFT got

the month started with a bang. Alpha Company Soldiers assisted the Brigade in conducting the Small

Arms Range operations and also performed well on the range when qualifying. The Company has

continued to push hard in Reset activities as we continue to reset our vehicles, CBRN, and

communications equipment. Despite our high operations tempo, Panther crew chiefs and pilots

continue to provide exemplary maintenance and mission support.

We would like to congratulate SGT Cawley on his graduation from the Hazardous Materials Course

and the Environmental Compliance Course. SPC West also deserves huge congratulations for

graduating the Warrior Leader Course. Alpha Company continues to be strengthened from within by

the educational accomplishments of our Soldiers.

Our pilots continue to train in preparation for our upcoming deployment, attending

Dunker/HEEDS re-qualification at Ft Rucker, AL. The Helicopter Over Water Survival Training

(HOST) facility at Ft Rucker will be training Alpha Company aviators on how to egress a helicopter

while underwater, upside down and in total darkness. This training is essential for safety in over water

helicopter operations. We also continue to prepare for

upcoming gunnery operations with weapon systems and

gunnery classes. Congratulate to CW2 Josh Kepple and

CW2 Josh Grogan for their stellar performance during their

Pilot-in-Command stateside evaluation.

This month provided Alpha Company with great

opportunities to support our adopted school, Trimmier

Elementary. CW2 Hall, SGT Cawley and SPC Schiavo

served as judges for the school’s Step Team tryouts. CW2

Ruark, CW2 Tippie and SSG Jennings also volunteered

their time assisting with Picture Day and an unscheduled fire drill. We look forward to many more

upcoming service opportunities at Trimmier Elementary School.

In the spirit of football season, Alpha Company enjoyed challenging Bravo Company and HHC to

a few rigorous games of ultimate football. To up the challenge, the crew chiefs faced off against our

own pilots. The crew chiefs pulled off an incredible victory with a last second interception by SGT

Thompson.

Our end of the month activities included the Hail and Farewell as well as the Battalion Trunk-or-

Treat Halloween Celebration. Also, great job goes out to SPC Yetter and CW2 Hughes for

representing Alpha company in the Soldier of the Month and Warrant Officer of the Quarter Boards.

Diamondbacks Families and Friends,

The Team completed numerous training flights, focusing primarily on completing our annual

requirements and keeping our aircrews current. We will soon be flying and maintaining more aircraft

as more of them return from reset, and our crews, along with our crew chiefs, are eager to be back in

the saddle doing what they love. We continue our mission supporting training flights even while

completing other vital tasks in preparation for deployment. The team continues inducting items into

and then receiving them back from reset with vehicles, NBC gear, aircraft, and numerous other types of

equipment. The Change of Command inventories, Maintenance walkthrough with the Deputy

Commander of the 1st Cavalry Division, and the Container yard inspections have kept us on our toes,

but as always, the Soldiers of Bravo Company are ready for any challenge. The Company also

completed several ranges this month, where our Soldiers posted impressive scores with the M9 Pistol,

M4 Carbine, M16 rifle and the M249 SAW.

As always, the Soldiers of Bravo Company continue to advance themselves and develop their skills

in Soldiering. CW2 Jason Sillasen is headed to Fort Rucker to become qualified as an Instructor Pilot,

CW2 Dave Elder returns to Fort Rucker to complete his Maintenance Test Pilot course, and SPC

Brandon Endres will complete the Armorer course this month.

The Diamondback Family gives a sad farewell to 1SG Jarrard Banks this month. After two long

and challenging years, he will be moving from Bravo over to HHC to do great things for the Operations

shop. Bravo Company’s loss will most certainly be their gain, and while he isn’t moving far, he will be

missed. Our new 1SG is Bobby Lucas who comes to us from 615th ASB, just down the road. He

served there as 1SG of B CO and PC NCOIC. His wealth of experience is sure to be a tremendous

asset to the Company.

“DIAMONDBACKS!”

Greetings Snake Eyes Family!

October is already gone! And while it’s no surprise, given the rapid pace of daily operations we’ve

had, we’re still sad to see the end of one of Texas’ mildest months.

Over the course of the month, we sent several pilots to Fort Rucker, Alabama for Helicopter Over-

Water Survival Training/Dunker, and continue to cycle the rest through. We continued the on-going

process of bringing our veteran aviators back up to currency, and progressing our newest. We

participated in, and manned, the Battalion Small Arms Ranges, conducted a PT test, and passed our

Arms Room inspection with an “Excellent” rating. On that last note, congratulations to SPC Larson,

whose meticulous preparation has earned an unheard-of “Excellent” rating on the last two formal Arms

Room inspections, and to CPL Reed for his flawless execution of the inspection in SPC Larson’s

absence. The Snake Eyes also performed flawlessly in the monthly Battalion Run, inducted one

aircraft into reset, and received another out of reset.

Additionally this month, we participated in the Combined

Federal Campaign- donation reception is ongoing (see SGT

Coleman), began ticket sales for the 2012 Guns Holiday Formal,

which is set for 1800-2200 December 13, 2012 (see 1LT

Fernandez), and helped host the BN Trunk-or-Treat, which was

a smashing success. One

thing we did not do; we

didn’t hold our latest FRG

meeting, and we still owe

you all a new date for that.

The Guns Hail and

Farewell took place this month as well, and we had our share of

each, whether or not the individuals were actually able to attend

the event.

We welcomed CW2 Sprankles and his wife, Katie. Fresh

from Germany, Mr. Sprankles will be an invaluable addition to

our ranks.

We farewelled CPT Carmody, who has journeyed all the way down the hall to the S-3 shop, and

1SG Anthony, who after what can only be described as an interminably long time, has taken his much-

deserved retirement (we love you, Top). Both are already sorely missed, and their selfless

contributions to our company were critical in developing and maintaining the operational unit that we

are today.

D Co Unforgiven

UNFORGIVEN Family and Friends,

A happy and productive October is behind us and the

holiday season is in full swing! The Unforgiven team, being the

largest in the Battalion, has continued to take on mission after

mission to ensure the success not only of our own unit but of

those around us. I want to give a big thank you to our Soldiers

who are diligently executing these wide-spread responsibilities

as well as the Family members supporting them! I additionally

want to give my

heartfelt thanks to all

those who participated in the Battalion’s Trunk-or-Treat, and

our own Haunted House at the Halloween event. These team

building experiences not only provided a safe environment for

the unit’s children to have some Halloween fun, but also

strengthened the link between our Soldiers and their Families

by allowing Family

members to check out

our aviation

maintenance facility

on Fort Hood.

With such a large formation, Delta Company is often gifted

with the opportunity to promote and award several Soldiers

each month. October was no exception, and it proved to be a

great opportunity to recognize some outstanding performers for

their hard work! Congratulations are due to newly promoted

Private First Class John Kernes of Shops Platoon, and Private First Class Juventino Portillo of

Maintenance Platoon. Their increased rank is representative of their dedication to exceeding the

standards of their profession.

It’s always tough to see those teammates who are PCSing

or ETSing move on, but it’s also a great opportunity to reward

them for all they’ve given us. SPC Andrew Pierson, SPC Mark

Phillippi, and SPC Frank Burkett of Maintenance were each

awarded the Army Achievement Medal for ETS. We wish

each of them luck as they move back into civilian life.

Additionally, we said goodbye to SGT Francis Leach of Shops

who was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for PCS.

D Co Unforgiven

Since there are so many personnel on their way in or out of

the unit during this transitional period, I’d like to again highlight

some upcoming training events that will affect some of our

Soldiers’ working schedules: December 13th will mark the first

Battalion Ball since our unit’s redeployment from Afghanistan.

Tickets are on sale now, and all are encouraged to attend with

their spouse or significant other. Shortly after that, many of our

Soldiers will have the opportunity to take some leave over the

Christmas Holiday. Finally, the Battalion will go to the field for a

few weeks in January in

support of an Aerial Gunnery

intended to qualify our aircrews on their weapons systems. This

will be a tremendous effort from Delta Company, from running

the FARP pads to maintaining Apaches outside of the sterile

hangar environment, and will involve the entire Company at one

point or another. Our Soldiers will be learning and validating

military skills that we haven’t exercised in a while. This will be a

great opportunity to get

back to some of the basics

of Soldiering.

Finally, I’d like to remind everybody that the upcoming

holiday season can be very joyous for many reasons, but also

marks a time of increased stress and Family turbulence for

many. Our unit and Army have tremendous resources for

helping Soldiers and Families who need support, be it

counseling, financial, or

simply someone to talk to.

There is absolutely no negative connotation associated with

making use of these critical resources. If you or someone you

know needs to reach out, please don’t hesitate to make contact

with either our chain of command, our unit Chaplain, or another

organization such as Military One Source.

Thank you all for your continued support and participation.

Please remember that our Family Readiness Group is there for all

of us, and it works because all of us participate. Have a great

Thanksgiving!

E CO Equalizers

Happy Holidays from the Equalizers!

This month has been extremely busy as we move

into the holiday season. Our Soldiers are doing

amazing things each day, working hard, and staying

motivated. We are excited to welcome 1SG Jose

Ventura to our team. 1SG and his Family join us

from Fort Drum, New York. He is a wheeled vehicle

mechanic by trade, and has held several positions in

Korea and

Germany. I

am sure he

will provide

sound

leadership and guidance, and play an integral role as my battle

buddy and the other half of the Equalizer command team.

This month SPC Hopkins and SGT Sandiego successfully

graduated from the Warrior Leaders Course. We were also

proud to promote PFC Kaczan and reenlist SPC Nikic. The

Battalion Trunk-or-Treat event went off without a hitch. We

appreciate all of the

Equalizer Families

who came out to

show their support.

I, 1SG Ventura, SFC

Sparks, SPC Fleming, SPC Kepner, and PFC Garretson all

decorated our cars and brought candy. Several Families

came to trunk-or-treat and tour the haunted hangar. SPC

Fleming scared all of the children with his ghastly decorated

1959 Cadillac hearse. He took home the award for “Most

Creative.”

We are excited to receive a new addition to the Equalizer

Family. On October 15th PFC Ramirez and his wife Maria

welcomed the birth of their first child Valerie. This little bundle of joy weighed in at 7lbs. Mom and

child are doing well, congrats!

We encourage all spouses to participate in the FRG. Mrs. Villafane held an informal coffee

gathering for spouses at the Clear Creek McDonalds recently, and everyone that attended had a great

time.

As we welcome in a new command team, we sadly bid farewell to 1SG Kennedy as he moves on to

Korea. 1SG Kennedy has been a part of the Equalizer Family since 2009. He has had a major impact

on countless Soldier, Officers, and NCOs. He will truly be missed, and we wish him the best of luck in

his future endeavors.

Guns Attack Family,

Do you have questions on what to do if you or someone you know is sexually assaulted? If you

have been sexually assaulted, think you have been sexually assaulted or know someone who has been

sexually assaulted:

1. Go to a safe location away from the attacker.

2. Contact your local Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC), Victim Advocate (VA),

healthcare provider, or SHARP Representative. You may also contact your chain of command or law

enforcement (military or civilian). However, just remember, if you do inform your chain of command

or law enforcement, an investigation will occur and you will not have the option of making a Restricted

Report.

3. Seek medical care as soon as possible. Even if you do not have any visible physical injuries, you

may be at risk of becoming pregnant or acquiring a sexually transmitted disease. Ask the healthcare

provider to conduct a sexual assault forensic examination (SAFE) to preserve forensic

evidence. If you suspect you had been drugged, request that a urine sample be collected.

4. Preserve all evidence of the assault. Do not bathe, wash your hands, eat or drink or brush your

teeth. Do not clean or straighten up the crime scene.

5. Write down, tape or record by any other means all the details you can recall about the assault and

your assailant.

And remember, the Guns Team is always here to help in any situation. So continue to watch out

for each other in order to ensure our unit continues to remain the best in the Army.

FAMILY AFFAIRS!

When we think about our Chaplains, most of the time, we like to put them in boxes. These

stereotypical boxes in which most service members place our Chaplains is spiritual in nature, and we

label them as “Religious Gurus”. In these boxes, we put them in, we expect them to be someone who

performs marriage ceremonies, preaches on Sundays, conducts Bible studies,

counsels Soldiers, and conducts funerals. However, Chaplains are much more

than that, they are your friends. The Bible says in Proverb 18:24 “A man of

many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than

a brother.” A brother is one who can look out for you not only in the spiritual

level but in all levels of your life. A true brother, or Soldier, is one who seeks

out self improvements, and will look for means and ways to assist or support

others to do the same.

I must confess, I love the 4-227th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion with all

my heart. I love the unit because each and every member is like Family to me.

And because our unit is a Family, I enjoy assisting and supporting my fellow

Guns Attack Team any way I can. Also, I want everyone to know that your

Unit Ministry Team is ready at anytime for any issues our Soldiers may have,

from spiritual to educational needs, to include proctoring exams. A true servant will always go beyond

his scope of duty to help anyone. No wonder the Lord said it is “more blessed to give than to receive.”

Giving out or serving others is the best examples of leadership. I pray that we all give our best in

everything we do in order to make our unit and country a better place.

Guns Family and Friends:

The Trunk-or-Treat and Haunted Hangar were a huge success.

There were lots of spooky little ghouls and goblins making their

way around to each trunk in order to get their fill of goodies. There

was also plenty of spooktacular fun inside the Guns Attack Hangar

as Family and friends made their way through the frightening

haunted house, and enjoyed other fun filled games, trying to win

lots of treats.

Speaking of winning, the Trunk-or-Treat ended with the

presentation of “The Most Creative” and “The Spookiest” trunks.

Congratulations goes out to SPC Carlos Fleming for winning “The

Most Creative” and 1LT Daniel Ables for winning “The

Spookiest”, great job, and thanks to all our Trunk-or-Treat

volunteers who made this event so memorable.

Also, be on the look out for the 4-227th ARB Holiday Formal

which will be held on 13 DEC from 1800-2200 in the Club Hood

Ball Room. This will be a great event for all, and we look forward

to seeing everyone there.

Some other events to be on the lookout for in the coming month:

BN Steering Committee Meetings are held on the second

Tuesday of each month.

Nature in Lights at BLORA starts on 17 NOV 2012 and goes through 6 JAN 2013, times are 1730-

Child passenger safety seat inspections at Sprocket Auto Crafts is on 30 NOV 2012.

We would like to take this time to introduce our new 4-227th ARB Family Readiness Support

Assistant, Mr. Charles Lyons. We look forward to his guidance and insight in order to enhance our

FRG. As always, continue to stay engaged with your company FRG Leaders on upcoming events and
