LIME RECOVERY KILN MAINTENANCE WORKSHOPLime Kiln Inspection Checklists (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Annually)

JOHN ROSS – INDUSTRIAL KILN & DRYER GROUP (IKD) LOUISVILLE, KYAt a kraft pulp mill, the lime kiln is an integral part of the overall chemical recovery cycle. Proper monitoring ofcritical mechanical elements of the kiln are key to continuous steady and reliable operation without unplannedshutdowns. A good set of scheduled inspections will assist in avoiding major problems and be a beneficial tool inplanning for routine and/or major maintenance and the expenses for such parts & services. A series of daily, weekly, monthly and annual recommended specific items and areas to check will be presented and discussed.

Troubleshooting Common Lime Kiln ProblemsAs inspections are performed and/or in normal operations; mechanical problems on the kiln may be notedthrough unusual noise, component wear patterns, accelerated wear and/or higher than normal operatingtemperatures. We will review some more commonly occurring issues and how to relate the effect to thecause, then plan for a solution.

LIME RECOVERY KILN MAINTENANCE WORKSHOP (Continued)“Kiln Alignment: Why & How? ”

JOHN ROSS – INDUSTRIAL KILN & DRYER GROUP (IKD) LOUISVILLE, KYA rotary kiln shell is supported by riding rings or “tires” which ride upon sets of carrying/trunnion/supportrollers. It is critical to maintain the shell center of rotation along a straight axis that runs at the design slope ofthe kiln. Periodic measurements are required to determine existing kiln center of rotation and then using thisdata, calculate needed roller adjustments to reset the kiln shell center of rotation to the correct positioning.Additionally, carrying rollers are adjusted to maintain a parallel axis to the kiln shell centerline. Thesemeasurements and adjustments minimize component wear and/or potential excessive stress conditions which canlead to component overloads and failures. We will present methods of measurement and procedures whichcompose the typical alignment process.

Monitoring & Adjusting the KilnOnce a kiln is aligned properly, it is still important to monitor riding conditions as they can be significantlyaffected by kiln loading and operating conditions. Significant internal build-up, weather events or shifts in kilnload can have effects on kiln riding and thrusting conditions. It may be necessary to make adjustments shouldsignificant changes in kiln riding and/or thrust conditions be found. We will review steps to monitor kiln ridingand thrust conditions as well as how to properly adjust the rollers to alleviate adverse conditions.

Open Discussion - Q&A SessionAn open discussion/forum will be offered to answer specific questions on the subjects covered as well as addressany specific issues or questions on lime kiln maintenance.

LIME RECOVERY KILN MAINTENANCE WORKSHOP (Continued)Lime Kiln Chain System Maintenance

GLENN HANSON – INDUSTRIAL KILN & DRYER GROUP (IKD) LOUISVILLE, KYA very often overlooked area that is key to conventional lime kiln operating efficiency is the chain system. Limekiln chain systems must be maintained as originally designed to continue to provide the high level of heat transferrequired for high efficiency kiln operation. This presentation will review basic chain system design concepts andprocedures on how to inspect and maintain a lime kiln chain system.

IDENTIFYING & RESOLVING LIME KILN INTERNAL BUILD-UP ISSUESGLENN HANSON – INDUSTRIAL KILN & DRYER GROUP (IKD) LOUISVILLE, KYA chronic problem for many mill operations, significant build-up can cause process problems and unplannedshutdowns for kiln clean-out. Many times the issue is a combination of operational problems which may not beeasily recognized due to their transient occurrence while others are more obvious but need dramaticrepresentation to push for needed changes. This presentation will review common causes and contributingfactors to kiln build-up. Several mills with chronic issues have recently looked at more unusual areas &/or havepushed for trials to demonstrate primary causes, data & information on the areas looked at and trials will bepresented. Time will be allotted for open discussion on the issue as it remains a constant operational &maintenance problem for many Gulf Coast TAPPI Mills.
