Dear Friends,

Welcome one and all to The Guardian Angels 32nd Gala Dinner, our primary fundraising event held once each year. We are pleased to wish our long-time supporters in attendance tonight, as well as guests less familiar with our organization, an enjoyable and memorable evening.

As struggling economic times continue, many communities across the nation have been forced to layoff police, including Oakland, California, and Newark, Camden, and Paterson, New Jersey. In these cities, already high crime rates escalated as a result of recent layoffs. Mayors and police departments in these communities reached out to The Guardian Angels for help, and we have responded in force. We sent seasoned patrols to these areas who are working to help concerned local citizens form their own Guardian Angels chapters. Our goal, as always, is to lend a hand, empowering everyday citizens to help themselves.

We also helped curb a dangerous situation in Huntington Station, New York. The city was under siege by gang members - Bloods, Crips, MS13s and Latin Kings. The problem was so grave that the Huntington school board decided to close the Jack Abramson Middle School because of random drive-by shootings and gang fights occurring in and around the school in broad daylight. Never before had a school in the U.S.A. been closed due to the violence out on the streets. The Huntington Housing Authority asked the Guardian Angels to patrol Huntington Station. Working in partnership with the police for several months now, we are bringing about results. Crime and gang violence is down dramatically and the closed school will hopefully reopen in September. We have established a base in the projects there and are running a Junior Guardian Angels Program for area youth on Saturdays. Based on the success in Huntington Station, other towns in Nassau and Suffolk are requesting our assistance.

Hollywood, too, has discovered The Guardian Angels. Two popular television series – Glee, and The Office, have featured grassroots groups wearing red berets and red satin jackets in recent months. In Glee, a youth patrol called the Bullywhips walks the school halls, protecting students from bullying, intimidation and harassment. This takeoff gives a nod to the successful anti-bullying programs we have long provided to schools.

We continue our good work in Washington Heights-Inwood where our community services center extends programs and assistance to over 500 youth and adults each week. All of our youth programs fall within our Role Model Zone, the comprehensive outreach program we’ve established in communities and our website. We can only continue these programs with you by our side. In the past, you have been generous and we thank you for your support. May we work together to safeguard families and guide youth to turn away from violence and lead productive, contributing lives.

The RealityEvery day, we receive calls and letters from individuals pleading for help to overcome violence in their worlds. These calls only confirm the increases in violence, harassment, and intimidation reported daily in newspapers and research surveys. Bullies, predators, and gangs, in increasing numbers, are creating fear and danger in our communities. The perpetrators lurk in schools, neighborhoods, streets, subways and the Internet.

The DreamThat all children will enjoy a safe environment in which they can rise to their full potential and develop self-esteem, confidence and pride of accomplishment through a contribution and commitment to society.

The GoalTo motivate teachers, parents and children to create a safer, more powerful future through our programs focused on personal safety, civic contribution, value development and cyber security. To bring violence prevention programs to schools across America for the benefit of students, families, and teachers. To serve as a resource for training teachers in violence prevention at institutions of higher learning.

The PlanThrough increased partnership with educational, business, cultural and religious institutions in our communities, we will solidify and expand our pragmatic and positive role model programs. We will expand and enhance our programs focused on personal safety, neighborhood safety, cyberspace safety and civility, with a special emphasis on overcoming social and educational adversity. In concert with our nation’s schools, we will continue our ground-breaking work to develop curricula illustrating and documenting the benefits of violence prevention.

He holds professorial appointments in the Departments of Orthopedics and Medicine and is the Chairman of the Academic Department of Orthopedic Science at NYCPM and the Foot Center of New York.

Rafael Alvarez was born in the City of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and from his early age he wanted to be a successful entrepreneur. In 1986, with two hundred ($200) dollars of his saving, one computer and a fax machine he founded AlvarezTax and soon this company became a recognized name in the tax business marketplace. Rafael’s success and recognition in the area of tax preparation came through his well developed expertise in the tax industry. He is a veteran in the tax preparation industry of over twenty four tax years, the co-founder of Atax Software Solutions, Inc. and ATAX Financial Services, LLC a top tax financial advisor to independent businesses. In September, we were saddened by the passing of our dear friend and long-time supporter, Jim Winner. Perhaps Jim was best known around the world as the inventor of the popular car antitheft device, “The Club.” But what most people didn’t know is that Jim and his family believed in the concept of “Improve- Don’t Move.” He chose to base his successful company, Winner International, in his beloved hometown of Sharon, PA. When tough economic times ravaged Sharon and the Shenango Valley, the Winner Family hunkered down and invested their money in business development and job creation, benefitting communities throughout Western PA. They bought and restored buildings to better the region. They increased their philanthropic efforts, with donations to charitable organizations, scholarship funds, churches, and schools.

Jim’s wife, Donna, and daughter, Karen, embraced and embellished Jim’s favorite causes. In addition to helping communities in PA and Ohio, the Winner Family became supporters of The Guardian Angels. Jim became aware of the Angels mission and good works as a result of working with Mary on an advertising project for The Club when she was at WABC radio in the 1990s. At that time, the Angels’ efforts had cleaned up the Times Square area during an era when crack and crime were major problems in mid-town. When we lost our headquarters because of the rising rents in the area, knowing we’d be homeless within a few days, Jim found out and sent a very generous donation to make sure we would have a home of our own.

Over the years, Jim and his family would help spread The Guardian Angels concept wherever they traveled, in PA and Ohio. In the last year, due to their groundwork, we started a chapter in Youngstown. Jim Winner, in short, was the best ambassador that The Guardian Angels has ever had.

We are honored to have been a part of Jim Winner’s remarkable life and we will continue to celebrate his legacy of supporting the Guardian Angels. Thank you, Donna and Karen, for all that you have done and continue to do for the Angels. We will never forget Jim’s deeply spiritual, charitable, and warm personality. We are eternally grateful to you, and we will miss him dearly.

Leontina Vaduva is a highly acclaimed French soprano of Romanian origin. With her rich and generous voice, she has given life to some of the great heroines of Opera, including: Micaela in Carmen, Adina in The Elixir of Love, Norina in Don Pasquale, Leila in The Pearl Fishers, Eurydice in Orpheo and Eurydice, Marguerite in Faust, Mireille in Mireille, Juliette in Romeo and Juliette, Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann, Blanche de la Force in The Dialogues of Carmelites, Missia Palmeri in The Merry Widow, Gilda in Rigoletto, Lauretta in Gianni Schicci, Mimi in La Boheme, Susanna in The Noces of Figaro, Alice Ford in Falstaff, Violetta in La Traviatta, Elisabeth de Valois in Don Carlo and has sung opposite a number of the world’s most renowned singers such as Placido Domingo, Roberto Alagna and José Cura.

She received her Diploma at the Academy of Music of Bucharest, and since her premiere of Manon de Massenet at Capitole of Toulouse, Leontina has been invited to perform at world’s most prestigious theaters and festivals with many international orchestras. Notably, she has received ovations at: Paris – Bastille, London – Covent Garden, Milan – Teatro de la Scala, Vienna – Staatsoper, New York – Metropolitan Opera and also at Florence, Munich, Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Tokyo.

Leontina is featured in numerous full-length recordings, including: La Boheme with Antonio Pappano, Rigoletto with Carlo Rizzi, The Tales of Hoffmann with Kent Nagano, Carmen with Alain Lombard (which received the recording of the year in France). She is also featured compilations – ‘Opera Arias’ Conducted by Placido Domingo, and videos – Romeo and Juliette with Roberto Alagna, Carmen conducted by Zubin Mehta.

Leontina has been awarded several first prizes in prestigious international competitions of song. She has conducted Master Classes in: The Bucharest National Opera, The Baltimore Lyrique Opera, The Istanbul Music Conservatory, Colmar, Lagraulet Festival , Santander Spain, Toulouse Music Conservatory, and Paris Music Conservatory, and Geneva Haut Ecole de Musique.

In addition, her artistic qualities and contributions have acknowledged in France with the Medaille of the City of Toulouse, the Officer de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres ; in the United Kingdom by the Sir Laurence Olivier Awards as The Most Outstanding Opera Performance, and by The Royal Philharmonic Awards for The Most Outstanding Operatic Debut ; in Romania she received the title of Grand Officer in The Order of Music and Culture.

Community Safety Patrols

• The heart and soul of The Guardian Angels since 1979.

• Comprised of volunteers who patrol streets, subways, neighborhoods, and community events to safeguard citizens of all ages.

• Community services include graffiti paint-outs, park reclamation, first aid, self defense and safety seminars for vulnerable populations, and emergency responders.

Educational Programs and Community Involvement

• NYCDOE Contracted Vendor since 2006.

• The Angels provide Student Support Services to students, professional development programs to educators, and programs for parents and community members. Topics include bullying, gangs, cyberbullying, youth violence, leadership, conflict resolution and school pride assemblies.

The Guardian Angels Role Model Zone

• Assemblies and workshops are conducted in schools that focus on Positive Peer Pressure, Conflict Resolution, and Antibullying. Through these programs, youth learn about alternatives to joining gangs, controlling anger, understanding how arguments and substance abuse can turn into violence, and the key role of kindness, understanding and forgiveness in reducing bullying and cyberbullying. RMZ serves to elicit safety consciousness within the school community.

• The Guardian Angels certifies New York educators at St. John’s University in youth violence prevention with a program that meets the requirements of the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (S.A.V.E.) Act.

CyberAngels Internet Safety Education Program

• Web-based information and resources for educators, caregivers, and children to help establish and maintain a safe online environment for everyone.

Junior Guardian Angels The Junior Guardian Angels, our early prevention program for children from 7 to 11, teaches values and instills a sense of purpose.

With so much peer pressure to choose violence as a means of resolving disputes, this program exerts a strong, positive influence on the child’s development. It teaches each child how to make “correct” choices, and helps them to recognize that they have talents and interests that are of value.

The program uses a variety of teaching tools - from art projects and puppets to workshops with community leaders, police and fire departments - all of which foster an appreciation and respect for each child’s neighborhood.

The youngsters develop self-esteem through role-playing, verbal defense skills, and community projects that give them a sense of purpose.

Children have participated through Junior Guardian After-School Club Programs, including programs administered through the YMCA of Greater New York. Recent grants by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development have furthered delivering these life-shaping programs to today’s youth.

Urban Guardian AngelsUrban Guardian Angels, for teens 12 to 16, provides an alternative to gangs and drugs through a supportive club environment dedicated to community service and personal responsibility. Our program has been adapted to work through the New York City Public School System, the YMCA of Greater New York, and the New York Housing Authority as well as in other Guardian Angels chapters, such as Washington D.C.

Within the school system, teens are recommended by teachers and principals. The program focuses on those who need to improve attendance or behavior, or who face other adjustment challenges. It also provides structured weekend recreational activities that combine fun with education and the challenges of group dynamics. Many participants have successfully turned away from the lure of drugs and gang life to become role models for their peers and local community.

To date, the Urban Angels have serviced 1,200 teens and preteens in crime and violence prevention education, as well as character-building education. In addition, participants in these programs have provided community service in the form of approximately 50 service-related projects linked to community safety. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, eight scholarships have been awarded to our achievers!

In 1979, Curtis Sliwa founded the Guardian Angels to protect New Yorkers from the immediate dangers facing them on the streets and in the subways every day. Sixteen years later, in 1995, citizens called for assistance to deal with a new set of threats—cyber threats. The danger no longer stops at our doorsteps; children are vulnerable to online predation that can be difficult to detect and stop. The Guardian Angels responded to citizens’ pleas by launching CyberAngels.

CyberAngels offers guidance in matters of internet security, cyberbullying, and online safety. Volunteers respond to individuals’ requests for help in potentially dangerous situations, and reach out into the community to educate children and adults alike.

When Mary Sliwa joined the Guardian Angels in 1996, she took charge of the nascent CyberAngels and shaped it into the community-oriented safety program it is today. In 1998, under her direction, CyberAngels debuted in Washington, DC at the “Focus on Children: Internet Safety” summit, where it earned recognition from President Bill Clinton. Tips to Help Stop CyberbullyingDon’t respond. If someone bullies you, remember that your reaction is usually exactly what the bully wants. It gives him or her power over you. Who wants to empower a bully?

Don’t retaliate. Getting back at the bully turns you into one and reinforces the bully’s behavior. Help avoid a whole cycle of aggression.

Save the evidence. The only good news about digital bullying is that the harassing messages can usually be captured, saved, and shown to someone who can help. You need to do this even if it’s minor stuff, in case things escalate.

Talk to a trusted adult. You deserve backup. It’s always good to involve a parent but - if you can’t - a school counselor usually knows how to help. Sometimes both are needed. If you’re really nervous about saying something, see if there’s a way to report the incident anonymously at school.

Block the bully. If the harassment’s coming in the form of instant messages, texts, or profile comments, do yourself a favor: Use preferences or privacy tools to block the person. If it’s in chat, leave the “room.”

Be civil. Even if you don’t like someone, it’s a good idea to be decent and not sink to the other person’s level. Also, research shows that gossiping about and trash talking others increases your risk of being bullied. Treat people the way you want to be treated.

Don’t be a bully. How would you feel if someone harassed you? You know the old saying about walking a mile in someone’s shoes; even a few seconds of thinking about how another person might feel can put a big damper on aggression. That’s needed in this world.

Be a friend, not a bystander. Watching or forwarding mean messages empowers bullies and hurts victims even more. If you can, tell bullies to stop or let them know harassment makes people look stupid and mean. It’s time to let bullies know their behavior is unacceptable - cruel abuse of fellow human beings. If you can’t stop the bully, at least try to help the victim and report the behavior.

A Parent’s Quick Reference CardRecognizing and Preventing Gang Involvement

This quick reference guide provides common warning signs of gang involvement, but may not be all-encompassing. Parents should look for multiple signs to indicate possible gang involvement because some of these indicators alone, such as clothes or musical preferences, are also common among youth not involved in gangs. Parents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local gang symbols, seek help early, and consider contacting school personnel, local law enforcement, faith leaders, and community organizations for additional assistance.

Warning Signs That Your Child May Be Involved with a Gang

• Admits to “hanging out”with kids in gangs• Shows an unusual interest in one or two particular colors

of clothing or a particular logo• Has an unusual interest in gangster-influenced music,

videos, movies, or websites.• Uses unusual hand signals to communicate with friends• Has specific drawings or gang symbols on school books,

clothes, walls, or tattoos• Comes home with unexplained physical injuries (fighting-

related bruises, injuries to hand/ knuckles)• Has unexplained cash or goods, such as clothing or jewelry• Carries a weapon• Has been in trouble with the police• Exhibits negative changes in behavior such as: – Withdrawing from family – Declining school attendance, performance, behavior – Staying out late without reason – Displaying an unusual desire for secrecy – Exhibiting signs of drug use – Breaking rules consistently – Speaking in gang-style slang
