“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15

Happy New Year! Let us rejoice in the Peace of our Lord. I’m sure you are ready to enjoy 2021 and prayerfully see the end of this pandemic that has greatly impacted many and altered our ways of life. Yes, 2020 was indeed a challenging year in so many ways. However, it was a year in which God significantly blessed our Chaplain ministry. How was it a year of blessing? Even in the challenging days of 2020 we know that our gracious God uses all trials and tribulations to bring us closer to Him. He certainly used our Chaplains as instruments of His grace to comfort the hurting. Firstly, our Civilian Hospital Chaplains (along with our Hospice and Retirement

Home Chaplains) had a significant impact in caring for many COVID patients. Their stories are extremely moving. God divinely placed our Chaplains in many strategic hospitals around the nation where they were able to care for COVID patients, their family members, and their medical caregivers. In these unprecedented times, words cannot capture the comfort they provided and their sacrifice as they provided hope to the hurting. I thank God that our Chaplains were able to share the love of Christ in this crisis. Secondly, the strategic assignments and positions of our Military Chaplains have been critical. Of course, every Chaplain position or assignment in the Armed Forces is vital to the spreading of the Gospel; however, there are certain assignments that have significant influence and strategic impact. God was gracious by placing many PRCC Chaplains in critical ministry assignments like the United States Military Academy at West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Army War College, Marine Corps University, Chaplain Center and School, and over 18 strategic assignments within the greater capital region of Washington, DC. There are many other PRCC Chaplains serving in very senior assignments overseeing and mentoring hundreds of Chaplains and thousands of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. What an impact they are having! Thirdly, we received and endorsed more new Chaplains in 2020 than ever before in our history. Our gracious Lord brought us faithful men of God who have a passion for this growing mission field of Chaplaincy ministry. At the time of this writing, we have added 29 new Chaplains or Candidates to our PRCC Roster in 2020, and we are currently working with over 30 more Applicants. This is so encouraging. Even in the midst of a difficult year God increased our number and expanded our reach for His glory and the proclamation of the Gospel. Fourthly, since our travel was limited due to the pandemic, we learned new and creative ways to visit and stay connected with our Chaplains. We were able to virtually visit over 180 of our 310 Chaplains. Nothing takes the place of an in-person visit but God used these virtual connections to empower our pastoral care and grow the ministry. These are a few of the ways your prayers were answered in 2020 as God blessed the expansion and Kingdom impact of this growing mission field. We are deeply thankful for your support during this challenging season. I’m so excited about 2021 and can’t wait to see how God will work. You will never know the impact your prayers and financial contributions are having as we grow. I pray that as you read through this edition of the Guardian you will gain an even deeper understanding of the power of God at work through our faithful Chaplains. Blessings,

Dr. James R. Carter PRCC Executive Director & Endorser Chaplain Ministries Coordinator – Mission to North America

Tommy Peterson, EMAIL: [email protected] The inmates here need two things. 1. Greeting cards. We are always asked for empty greeting cards (especially for birthdays) and only have them if they are donated. 2. Books/magazines that are theologically rich. Many of the publications that come here are Pentecostal or lightweight or even wrong in what they teach. The inmates are needing reading that is deeper. Han Sik Cheung, EMAIL: [email protected] The Guardian readers’ prayer is the best resource for chaplains. I really appreciate your prayers. Richy Brasher, EMAIL: [email protected] I really appreciate the access to periodic free CCEF counseling booklets. Brent Sadler, EMAIL: [email protected] I am thankful for the readers who make contact and share that they are praying for the ministry, as well as those who have sent New Growth pamphlets! Prayer support is the most appreciated!

The coronavirus is really impacting non-profit ministries! Gifts to the PRCC are much needed and may be made several ways:

    GLOSSARY OF ACRONYMS

The military has its own language, and to make it even more challenging, each of the branches of service has its own language, particularly when it comes to their acronyms. If you come across an acronym in a chaplain report, you might want to check this Glossary to see if it is translated here. If you don’t find it here, and want to know what the acronym means, send an email to the Chaplain! January 2021

1 Friday LT Matt Schilling, CHC, USN, Deployed to Japan (PCA - Grace) Thanks be to God for 50 years of grace that He has lavished upon Katrina and me. Truly good, truly undeserved! Thanks also for our daughter Katie’s successful completion of her pre-deployment military training and safe return to Texas. By the time you read this, she will be overseas on a one-year deployment (like father like daughter). PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for a smooth transition for Katie overseas and for continued safety and blessing at her new Coast Guard duty station. We are thankful also for the favor our son Martin has received at his job. and ask prayer for him as he seeks to be an Aviation Mechanic in the Air Force. Pray that those service members who profess faith in Christ would pursue spiritual growth through the means God has provided. May God shatter their complacency and impart a holy zeal for the presence and glory of the Lord. Pray for safety for the training units conducting exercises at Camp Fuji and for continued protection for all of us from COVID-19 EMAIL: [email protected] 2 Saturday CH (CPT) Isaac Lee, USA, Battalion Chaplain, Fort Carson, CO (KAPC - Philadelphia Presbytery) Greetings from Fort Carson. I praise God for the safe return from deployment to Afghanistan. All our Troopers returned home and are back to their work and are getting ready for the next mission. I look forward to spending another great year with my current unit. PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for redeployed families to adjust well. Pray for my family to continue to enjoy this journey together. EMAIL: [email protected] CH (MAJ) Aaron Swartz, USA, USACHCS Homiletics SME, Fort Jackson, SC (ARPC - Catawba Presbytery) Right now I am finishing up my time at USACHCS as the Homiletics SME. I am working with my presbytery to stand alongside and coach some of the pastors with their preaching. Also, I have been speaking with

Erskine Seminary to teach preaching as an Adjunct Professor while beginning my Doctor of Ministry degree. Lastly, I am focusing on my transition while simultaneously working with my ongoing health issues. PRAYER REQUESTS: I praise God that I heard from Johns Hopkins and have an appointment. Please continue to pray that I can finally get a diagnosis and treatment for my neurological issues. Pray for guidance for future ministry opportunities. EMAIL [email protected] 3 Sunday CH (COL) Ed Yurus, USA, US Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, NC (PCA - South Florida) Ministry and mentoring is my focus this quarter. As we return once again to delivering traditional ministry and pastoral care, I am reminded of the importance of Christian relationships and encouragement. Unit, family, and chapel Bible studies have returned, and the appreciation and support has been encouraging. Throughout my career I have embraced the privilege of mentoring junior Chaplains. This quarter my mentoring message is to build your credibility in the unit so you can expand your sphere of influence. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for our chapel community, Bible studies and Chaplain-led family programs. As you pray for our Bible studies please lift up our military spouses’ Bible study; this was our largest study in 2019 and early 2020 but has struggled to regain momentum in a semi-post COVID-19 environment. EMAIL: [email protected] 4 Monday CH (Capt) Hans Decker, 501 CSW/HC, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom, (PCA - Philadelphia) My chapel team at RAF Croughton has continued to seek

US, which has led to some challenges, but we have been able to press on. I am deeply grateful

to belong to a very supportive and hardworking team of Chaplains and religious affairs NCOs. We laugh hard and work hard, and I think as a whole team we help to model joy in the good things that God has given us, even when times are hard. As the virus rages, the health and safety of our community is of course paramount, but we also continue to be deeply concerned about declining mental health and isolation that are especially likely to affect our younger single Airmen. PRAYER REQUESTS: We need prayer for ways that we can connect with them and share our very real Hope with them, particularly as the UK is in the middle of an upswing in cases and we are entering a local lockdown. Moreover, as political division and civic unrest has caused upheaval back in the States, we as a diverse team of believers have a real chance to promote reconciliation and a sense of unity across the community. Pray that we would be able to lead by example EMAIL: [email protected] 5 Tuesday CH (MAJ) John Lee, USA, Joint Base Deputy BDE Chaplain, Fort Hood, TX (KAPC - Northern California Eastern Presbytery) Just recently my wife and I moved to Fort Hood, TX from Fort Myer, VA. for my new assignment as the Brigade Chaplain of 1st Air Cav Brigade. Due to the COVID-19 situation, we had to travel from VA to TX straight without having any opportunities to take some time off during our PCS move. I am still learning to know my unit better and to be a good supervisory Chaplain for my five other Battalion Chaplains in our Brigade. PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for our Weekly Bible study and for the spouse Bible study, during this challenging time of pandemic. I realize how much people are yearning to be connected to one another and God. Pray for my family's physical and spiritual resiliency. Pray for God's wisdom and strength for me to be a good mentor for my fellow Chaplains. EMAIL: [email protected]

6 Wednesday 1LT James Shin, 472 CM BD HHQ, Chicago, IL (PCA - Korean Central) I am still under the supervision of my head Chaplain at my unit. I hope to attend the Chaplain Officer Basic Leader Course as soon as possible so that I may be more equipped and trained. Based on the official reservation, I am supposed to attend the course in spring, 2022. PRAYER REQUESTS: It is not easy to focus on school while taking care of my two young daughters. I want to balance my given time wisely for my family and education. As a Chaplain candidate, I wish to learn many things for my future Chaplain ministry. I need wisdom in embracing and loving Soldiers. EMAIL: [email protected] 7 Thursday CH (LTC) Kevin Wainwright, USA, Army War College, Carlisle, PA (PCA - Potomac) This year there are three main things I am working to complete. First, my DMIN project for Wesley Theological Seminary, which has a program focused on military Chaplains. Second, my Student Research Project for the Army War College. Third, my Senior Leader Development Project for the Office of the Chief of Chaplains. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for my wife Kim and me as we have sent off two of our three sons to college this year. Pray also for me to stay focused to get projects done and to be a faithful witness and comforting presence to by fellow students. We will be moving on in June of this year. Pray for wisdom and success in advocating for, and advising on, religious freedom for our military communities, especially in these challenging pandemic times that have brought challenges and opportunities related to virtual ministry. Pray continued blessings for my entire family in what we anticipate will be a time of great transition for all of us in 2021 when we anticipate moving away from the DC area in June, and my middle daughter graduating at that same time from college. EMAIL: [email protected] 9 Saturday CH (LTC) Daniel Kang, USA, Plans & Operations Chaplain, Ft Bragg, NC (PCA - Central Carolina) I took a new duty and responsibility as plans and operation Chaplain at the Fort Bragg Religious Support Office since September 2020. We have more than 120 Chaplains on the post and operation tempo is so high. I need to plan all special events (i.e. National Prayer Breakfast, VBS etc.…) at least five months in advance. I spend most of my time on pre-planning, coordinating, and managing all of our religious support operations at Fort Bragg. We have a godly and wonderful team at our office, and I am really thankful for them. All my children are now in college. We enjoyed empty nesting for a short time and then they returned home from college because of COVID-19 in-person class closures. PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for my spiritual walk with the Lord and pray for reopening of chapel services in January 2021 at Pope Chapel. We have six Chaplains in our pastor team and three of them are PRCC Chaplains. I am so grateful for our reformed brothers and their faithful service to the Lord and our country. EMAIL: [email protected] 10 Sunday CH (MAJ) Shannon Philio, USA, 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, JBLM, WA (PCA - Grace) Brethren, with retirement this 31 January, I write my final Guardian report before leaving active duty. Thank you for your many words of encouragement and faithful prayer support these last 24 years as I sought to answer the call to serve as an ambassador of Christ. Together in

this partnership ministry, we have seen the Lord impact thousands of souls spiritually by edifying His flock and evangelizing His love and salvation to the lost. Please continue to support this vital military ministry to preserve and advance Christ's Kingdom in our own nation and worldwide wherever Chaplains are sent. More than ever before, we need to ask the Lord to raise more pastors for our military community as the evil one, the world, and the flesh continue to attack our armed forces. I look forward to returning home to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to fulfill the fifth commandment by honoring and caring for parents now in their eighties and to reunite with siblings and friends of Grace Presbytery. Please join me in prayer that the seeds planted in so many lives over two decades of military ministry will result in much fruit for His honor, glory, and praise. I humbly entreat you to join me in prayer for personal spiritual renewal and revival as I return to civilian ministry. While I am still "on fire" for the Lord, I must confess that I am tired. Hopefully, my next ministry does not require my jumping out of perfectly good airplanes. Finally, I gratefully appreciate your prayers for God's calling and leading into the next pasture He would have me to serve as pastor and shepherd. Thank you again for partnering with me by prayer and other support for so many years in this military Gospel ministry. Lord's continued blessings upon you and yours! Currently, as we are wrapping up the semester, about 90% of the classes are on-line. Many of our students did not come back to campus since all their classes met virtually. RUF, however, met in person while following the social distancing guidelines put forth by UNF. We have been able to meet in person both on-campus and off-campus, and we will continue to provide the option of small groups on-line

through Zoom. We have further developed our on-line presence with a podcast and some quick videos. Please pray specifically that we will be able to connect with new students during this time. PRAYER REQUESTS: My wife Nikki and our kids are doing well: Tili (13), Asher (9), Izzy (5), and Judah (1). Nikki continues to teach one day a week at our homeschool community. I am very thankful that my whole family is part of the ministry to our students at UNF. Thanks for your ongoing support and prayers. Please let me know when I can give your church, mission committee or session a personal update Email: [email protected] 12 Tuesday CH (MAJ) Chris Bryan, Executive Officer, NGB-OC, Arlington, VA (PCA - Missouri) 2020 was a year of big changes for our family. Up until last March I was serving as a traditional National Guard Chaplain and my wife, Cris, and I were teaching full time. Then, just as the pandemic caused us to transition to teaching online, I was brought onto full-time orders to support Missouri’s COVID-19 response. One month later, I accepted a position as the Executive Officer for the Office of the Joint Chaplain at National Guard Bureau (NGB) in Washington, D.C. Due to the temporary nature of the orders, we decided that Cris should remain in Kansas to teach through the next school year. The separation was harder than we expected, having weathered two deployments. In the months that followed we traveled back and forth to see each other as much as possible. In October, I received PCS orders to continue at NGB for a one-year tour. Cris resigned her teaching job, finished out the semester, and then moved to join me in D.C. So, after 25 years of teaching school, we both find ourselves stepping out in faith, trusting God with wherever this new adventure will take us. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray that we will find a new church home and for the courage to make new friendships and participate in our new community. Pray also that God would use these circumstances to teach us to trust him more, to shed what is not important, and to pray more and worry less about whatever comes next. EMAIL: [email protected]

13 Wednesday CH (MAJ) Troy Milliken, 143rd Sustainment Command, Orlando, FL (PCA - Mississippi Valley) I changed units from a Transportation Brigade in Baton Rouge to a Sustainment Command in Orlando in March 2020. I am now a Family Life Chaplain. Upon switching Reserve units, COVID-19 struck. We have been doing virtual battle assemblies since then. My main ministry has been virtual chapel services and organizing Strong Bond events. Strong Bonds plays a major resiliency factor into Soldiers lives. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray that despite virtual circumstances that I would get to know my new Soldiers. I covet prayer also for my mother whose dementia is progressing. EMAIL: [email protected] 14 Thursday CH Bruce Farrant, Chaplain at Asbury Place Maryville, Maryville, TN (PCA - Tennessee Valley) My wife Linda was able to have a successful cochlear implant surgery on September 30th and an activation of the implant on October 9th. For the first time in three years she is beginning to hear. Praise the Lord! PRAYER REQUESTS: Please be in continued prayer for our residents at Asbury Place Retirement Community who have been in lock-down since March of last year. Their daily lives are a real struggle. Please pray for prayer for the staff. COVID-19 and its stress is taking its toll on them as well. I am so thankful for our Heavenly Father for putting me in a place where I have complete liberty to preach, pray, and offer the comfort of God’s grace. I am also continuing to minister to and support our staff. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for sustaining ministry as we minister to inmates with mental disorders as they struggle with depression, loss of family, and struggle with a lack of hope. Thank God for sustaining health and family. EMAIL: [email protected] 16 Saturday CH Lynell Friesen, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, WI (PCA - Wisconsin) My mother was placed on Hospice this fall and she recently passed away peacefully with my Dad at her bedside. All her children were able to make it to their home for dinner the Sunday prior. It was one of her wishes that her children could gather at her side one more time. As the nature of medical ministry changes so does our ability to meet the needs. In-person Chaplaincy is being replaced by tele-Chaplaincy. Perpetual use of Personal Protective Equipment alters the effect of presence and touch in our continued interaction with our patients as they and their families deal with trauma, fear, grief and loss. PRAYER REQUESTS: That God’s Presence will flow though his people as we come alongside our patients as they continue to suffer alone. That I can model faith in the midst of fear before physicians, medical staff, and colleagues demonstrating and modeling my dependence in my Sovereign God. In all of this, that my God would find me faithful and true. EMAIL: [email protected]

17 Sunday CH Stephen Payson, Four Diamonds Chaplain for Pediatric Oncology, Hershey, PA (OPC - Presbytery of Central Pennsylvania) With thanks to our God and Father, through Jesus Christ, and in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, and through the prayers of many, I am pleased to report that on October 26, 2020, I unanimously sustained my examination to become a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains. With board certification completed, I continue to explore areas for growth in the spiritual care of pediatric oncology patients and their families, as well as in ministering to the excellent team of clinicians and caregivers at PennState Health Children's Hospital. In addition to my Chaplaincy work, I continue to serve our OPC presbytery in serving as temporary moderator to two sessions of local congregations, as well as by preaching as needs arise. PRAYER REQUESTS: Continue to pray for front-line hospital staff as the COVID-19 pandemic shows no sign of relenting and that God would be pleased to preserve the lives of many, especially sparing already immuno-compromised pediatric cancer patients. EMAIL: [email protected] PRCC NOTE: Board Certification involves considerable writing to various areas of competency, providing two case studies to demonstrate how they are met in the pastoral care of souls, and finally an interview before a peer committee of Chaplains. Congratulations Chaplain Payson!

Hood, arrived in Kuwait to begin a 9-month deployment. Apart from being homesick, my deployment was fruitful. After arriving in Kuwait, I was assigned as the Operation Chaplain Forward for the United States Army Central. This provided me the opportunity to manage all Religious Support personnel throughout the Army’s Central Command. I was also provided the opportunity to partner with a fellow PCA Chaplain in leading and preaching at one of the weekly chapel

services on Camp Arifjan. I also got the opportunity to fly into several remote bases in the AOR on Christmas Day to deliver care packages for some well deserving Soldiers – it was also the first time I rode on a helicopter in my many years in the military. Finally, I also partnered with a Civil Affairs team to volunteer at a local children’s hospital for the poorer citizen and other country nationals in Kuwait. I am back from deployment and slated to continue as the CMD Chaplain for the 134th CH Support Team in the VA Army National Guard. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray that my Unit will be able to fully reset after last year’s deployment. On the personal side of things, I ask for prayers on adjusting to the new COVID-19 normal. 19 Tuesday LT Peter Lee, CHC, USN, USS Lake Champlain, San Diego, CA (PCA - Korean Southeastern) I want to thank everyone for praying for us as we safely moved across country from NC to California and got settled in our new home. During our trip we were able to avoid COVID-19 and were able to enjoy our drive across our beautiful nation. I recently reported aboard my new unit and had a chance to go underway with my Sailors. It was a rewarding experience to see their efforts and be part of a great ship. I also have had many counseling sessions and have provided pastoral support to my Sailors. Our family is also adjusting well to life in San Diego and taking online school. Please pray for our safety and for our Sailors’ wellness during our out-to-sea periods. PRAYER REQUESTS: My PRAYER REQUESTs are for wisdom and insight to advise the ship’s leadership and the Sailors. To be faithful to the Call and provide the Sailors comfort and clarity in these times of the unknown. Please pray also for the Word of God to be proclaimed and revealed through my words and actions with the Sailors. EMAIL: [email protected] 20 Wednesday CH (CPT) Jason Strong, South Carolina Full-Time Support Chaplain, Columbia, SC (ARPC - Catawba Presbytery) I am still serving as a Chaplain with the SC

National Guard. I currently serve as both a Full-Time Support Chaplain and as a Battalion Chaplain. My ministry includes ministry of God’s Word and providing Biblical/Pastoral counsel to those who are in need. I have conducted three family and marriage training events impacting approximately 100 families and three training events for Soldiers returning from deployment who experienced trauma as a result of or during their deployment impacting approximately 70 families. I regularly respond to Soldiers who are in crisis and am expected to provide support to the family members of Service Members. I have had the joy of having heard a few Soldiers confess faith and have attempted to get them integrated into a Biblically sound Church. Also, I rapidly deployed to Washington DC in support of Civil Authorities in Defense of the nation’s capital region. My Battalion (1-118 Infantry (Light) Battalion) deployed with only a 2-hour notice. Within 20 hours from first notice of the possible mission (Warning Order), our 500 Soldiers arrived in DC and began to conduct missions. Our Battalion was deployed for only 10-14 days and became somewhat of a political football between the Mayor of DC and Secretary of Defense. Many of our Soldiers experienced some ugly moments while providing security amidst the protestors at Lafayette Square (In front of the White House). I believe South Carolina National Guard remains one of the most heavily deployed National Guards per capita with thousands going out in support of our National mission each year. PRAYER REQUESTS: My family remains healthy and stable. We celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary in December. Please pray for wisdom to speak timely and clear truth of the Gospel to all. Pray for steadfastness among political pressures. Pray for love to only increase in all I am and permeate all my labor. Pray God glorifies Himself in and through me as I seek to faithfully serve. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray God’s provision for us. EMAIL: [email protected] 22 Friday CH (CPT) Brent Sadler, USA, 6-1 CAV, 1 ABCT, Fort Bliss, TX (PCA - Covenant) At present, our unit has spent the fall training “in the field” and are still more than a year away from a possible deployment. I led about six services in September and October, and regularly circulated amongst our 650+ Troopers. My assistant, SGT Champ and I learned how to drive a new vehicle, communicate with radios in a convoy, and some “field craft”. This involved things like keeping warm while sleeping in the desert, offering timely religious services anywhere, anticipating where needed, and going where the Commander sends us. Our Chapel merged with another to create a new Chapel, at which I get to preach more than before. We are currently preaching through I Corinthians. I also got to preach at Las Tierras Community Church (PCA) summer, and we got to visit Christ the King (PCA) a number of times while the Chapels were shut down. I have begun doing Suicide Prevention talks

(pictured below), digital Word of the Day videos @Dragoon Shepherd on FB, and social media posts with my Commander to keep communication open during the pandemic. The Army mission never slows down. Ministry opportunities are abundant. I have done more counseling this year than last. PRAYER REQUESTS: God provided friends in our neighborhood for every one of our children. The barracks Bible study has stopped and started again. The first time it was through Salvador, who is now out of the Army. This second time it is through Scott, who is a sponge for the Word. Please keep them both in your prayers! Along with my responsibilities with this unit, I also serve the local church in the Bay Area, Christ Central San Francisco. While ministry in both areas of life has been quite difficult due to the pandemic, there has never been a greater need for the Gospel to be shared, which I am privileged to provide for His Glory. PRAYER REQUESTS: For the Lord’s help in navigating the complex nature of ministry during times of pandemic. For my Soldiers in their individual circumstances and life stages. For the youth students that I serve at church and their ability to socialize in a virtual education model. EMAIL: [email protected] 25 Monday CH Brent Easton, Mercy Health Hospice, Paducah, KY (PCA - Illiana) The power of prayer is unknown and beyond comprehension. Words cannot describe how thankful I am for the myriad of people that are praying right now. I am blessed by your reading this and taking up praying for me, for my wife Holly, and our two teenagers. You have covenanted to pray for our marriage and family, for my ministry as now a seven-year Hospice Chaplain and local Pastor. I need your prayers. PRAYER REQUESTS: The battle is thick, the cost is high and the battle begins and ends in prayer. I ask you to pray that I deeply learn the power of prayer. Pray that I will stand for Truth in a pluralistic world. Pray that I pray and not lean on my own understanding as I war with self, and Satan. Pray that I will be bold as a lion, and harmless as a dove as I am with the dying and grieving. Pray the Lord strengthen me, as I feel a great weight of death within me. I work and minister in death and sometimes it is overwhelming. It seems to snuff me out somedays. I want to be free of this body of death. Praise be to God He lives and reigns in my heart. Through your prayers, I was able to build a good relationship with my unit Soldiers and leaders. For this next year, I want to serve Soldiers with the grace of the Lord during our National Training Center rotation. I also have the goal of starting a weekly Bible study. My third goal for the year is to provide the necessary trainings for Soldiers, leaders and their families. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for safety and well-

I enlisted less than two weeks following my 17th birthday in 1986, came back as a Chaplain at 38, and now at 51 I can hang up my boots. I have been blessed to have been mentored by great PRCC Chaplains like Dave Peterson, Doug Lee, and especially Chris Wisdom. I have every confidence that Jim Carter already has and will continue to have the same influence on our younger Chaplains. Thank you to Gary Hitzfeld for keeping us up to date on our "duties", you have been a blessing as well. Last of all, I want to thank all of my brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus who have faithfully prayed for me, my ministry, and my family over the years. EMAIL: [email protected] 30 Saturday CH (CPT) Hyung Choi, USA, 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, NC (PCA - Korean Southeastern) Praise the Lord! We have just moved to Fort Bragg from Okinawa, Japan, where we lived since April of 2018. While serving there the Lord provided many opportunities to provide ministry to the Soldiers

and their Families. We were faced with unique challenges that made us become more faithful and depend on Him even more and we are grateful for it. Our BN has ODAs (Special Operations Detachments) spread out throughout INDOPACOM protecting our Nation and God has given me the privilege of visiting many of them in different locations to provide ministry. This provided me the special gateway to be part of their lives to counsel and to pray for them and pray for their Families. We were also blessed to leave the Island with an additional member of the Family (Abigail Choi, 2). We are glad to get back to the States and we cannot wait to see what God has in store for us as we continue to live the call to serve God and country. PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for wisdom and guidance from the Lord as we adjust to our new home during COVID-19 and as I transition to this new unit. Please pray for me that God will continue to use me to expand His Kingdom for His Glory. EMAIL: [email protected] 31 Sunday CH (CPT) JJ Kim, USA, 65th BEB, Schofield Barracks, HI (KAPC - Northern California Eastern Presbytery) Hawaii is the strictest state on COVID-19 mitigation; thus, we feel stuck on the island. Also, because of this, Soldiers feel they have no support from home on the mainland. People call Hawaii a paradise; however, paradoxically, there is much suicide among Soldiers here on the island. Feeling isolated and lack of support from home may be some of the reasons for that. To console their loneliness and to send hope through the message of Christ’s birth, my Brigade Unit Ministry Team went caroling on Christmas Eve. So, please pray for our ministries for Soldiers. PRAYER REQUESTS: Firstly, pray for my CDR, COL Maddox, CSM Moore, and XO MAJ Taylor for godly commanding with spiritual wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. Secondly, pray for my family, wife Reina, daughter Abigail, son Eugene for their walk with the Lord that they may draw near to God each day. Lastly, pray for healing for my right ankle, which was broken last February but is not yet healed. Pray for continued healing of

We have now been home from our deployment for about a year and half and our Soldiers have transitioned home well. By the time you read this, I will have transferred to the 6330th CSSB in January. I am looking forward to a new adventure with them. I will be sad to leave the many relationships I have built with my current unit, but trust that these are the right next steps for me in ministry. PRAYER REQUESTS: For strength and quickly establishing new relationships with my new unit. For wisdom as I learn a new unit and find the best way to mesh within their leadership structure to provide the spiritual leadership that is needed there. For continued safety, health and peace during uncertain times. We are attempting to make sure Unit Ministry Teams are spiritually ready to support the Soldiers and Families. Upcoming events include a Marital Enhancement Luncheon, prayer luncheon, and two Strong Bonds events. It is crucial to focus on souls of Soldiers and Families especially in these challenging circumstances. May the Lord continue to work within us to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for my son, Micah, who is a freshman in college for his transition from virtual to in-person classes this spring. Pray for my daughter,

Stephanie, who is preparing for college next year. Pray also for my mother-in-law who is going through chemotherapy. EMAIL: [email protected] 3 Wednesday CH (COL) Bob Nay, USA, Defense Information Systems Agency, Ft. Meade, MD (PCA - Philadelphia) We are enjoying our new assignment to Defense Information Systems Agency, Fort Meade, MD. We are using technology to provide weekly and monthly words of encouragement. Also, since my arrival, I have highlighted the unique capability of absolute confidentiality military Chaplains have for uniformed and civilian employees of the Department of Defense. This has provided a safe place for healing and a reminder for them of God's mercy and grace. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for wisdom as I encourage people who experience fear in the midst of the COVID-19 environment. For the first time I am near my Presbytery so my prayer is that I can serve in some capacity. Pray as we seek new and creative ways in this COVID-19 environment for my wife and I to reach out to our community with the Gospel. Chaplains in the Brigade at times was an opportunity to stretch me and grow in ways that covering only one Battalion could never do. Other than that, I am thankful to continue to provide in-person Chapel services for nearly 450 Soldiers-in-Training every Sunday. The challenge of 'tactical dispersion' for Chapel has given me an opportunity to preach four times every Sunday. Most importantly, however, is the fact that the Gospel is bearing much fruit here! Finally, I am thankful to report that the Drill Sergeants here have welcomed me into their world and are finally seeing me as *their* Chaplain and not just here for the trainees. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray that I am able to wisely balance the demands of ministry with shepherding my family well. Also, please pray for the safe arrival of our baby boy in February as my wife is pregnant with our second son. EMAIL: [email protected] 5 Friday CH (Capt) Martin Han, 375 AMW/HC, Scott Chapel, Scott AFB, IL (KAPC - North America Presbytery) This is my 3rd year that I’ve had the pleasure of going out for about a month out of the year. When I am at home on Long Island, NY, for the other 11 months out of the year, I am serving as the part time assistant pastor at a wonderful PCA church (North Shore Community Church, Oyster Bay, NY; senior pastor John Yenchko) and a full time supervisor in the Defense Contract Management Agency. Of great excitement this year is that the new Wing Chaplain here is also endorsed by the PRCC, Lt Col Michael Howard! I’m not sure if the Lord will call me to a rotation next year (the IMA world is a bit confusing), but I will be asking for my alma mater, the United States Air Force Academy, to be my next assignment. In the meantime, I want to continue to faithfully serve at Scott AFB. Some of the most important and meaningful ministry I have been blessed to do here is in grief and stress counseling. I am so grateful for the Christian Counseling Educational Foundation (CCEF) for training that brings real comfort and help to the suffering. PRAYER REQUESTS - First and foremost, please pray for my father and mother (Moo, 77,

and Chung Hee, 75), who have both contracted COVID-19. My younger brother has also contracted the virus. Please pray that the Lord protect and heal them, and especially bring my father back from severe illness. My father is also a pastor in the Korean Kosin Presbyterian denomination. Please pray that I continue to adapt to these strange times in bringing effective Gospel ministry to my church, my base, and to those in need. EMAIL: [email protected] 6 Saturday CH (CPT) Leon Buchanan, USA, 7th Special Forces Group, 4th BN, Eglin AFB, FL (ARPC - First Presbytery) The Buchanan Family has arrived and are settled in at our new duty station in FL. Thank you for the prayers during this transition. We are plugged into our chapel and starting to see how God can use us. We are also looking for a local church because we have not been to a Presbyterian church in over 3 years with being stationed in Germany. We plan on starting a local neighborhood Bible study in the new year. Thank you for your support from the Buchanan Family; Brenda (mommy) Karina (big sister) Isaiah (lil man) Norah (little sister) Julia (baby sister). PRAYER REQUESTS: For God to open doors for us in this new place. For our nation's healing. EMAIL: [email protected] 7 Sunday CH (LTC) Eric Leetch, USA, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, KY (PCA - South Florida) The Lord continues to treat the Leetch family far better than we deserve as the beginning of 2021 looks much like the end of 2020. For my part, I have been blessed by working with some of the finest young Chaplains in the Army and have found it a joy to try and encourage them in their labors. The command here in the 101st has also been fully supportive of Chaplain ministry and that has allowed us to try out some new initiatives, all of which have begun to bear fruit. Meanwhile, Karen continues to get the most out of the TN/KY region with Mary taking horseback riding lessons and Christian involved in a local orchestra (cello). PRAYER

REQUESTS: Please pray that the Lord would continue to allow us to see fruit in our home and on the ministry field, for He is the One who gives the increase. EMAIL: [email protected] 8 Monday CH Benson Bottoms, Kindred Hospice, Athens, GA (PCA - Georgia Foothills) Even in the midst of the COVID-19 mess I have been able to continue my work in the hospital, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and in patient’s homes. The only restriction placed upon me is having to wear a mask. My territory includes 18 counties, so a good portion of my day is spent driving. The drive time provides time for many podcasts and prayer. I remain the sole Chaplain with a total census of 85 patients. I enjoy the work yet feel the effects of age sneaking-up on me. PRAYER REQUESTS: I find myself more easily discouraged—the job is difficult and there is often not enough rest (ha-that is ministry right?) I still rely on myself and my righteousness most often and I want that to change. I want to know Him. EMAIL: [email protected] CH (MAJ) Michael Oliver, USA, RSO, USAG Fort Stewart, Fort Stewart, GA (PCA - Nashville) Overall, I am enjoying being the Chaplaincy Resources Manager at Fort Stewart’s Religious Support Office. I am very fond of my Senior Command Chaplain and Garrison Chaplain. However, I am growing fatigued of the politically correct/cancel culture of today’s Army. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray that God will give me wisdom as I execute my job as the Chaplaincy Resources Manager, and as I seek to minister to others both within and outside Fort Stewart’s Religious Support Office. EMAIL: [email protected] 9 Tuesday CH (COL) Rob Allman III, USA, Regional Health Command - Atlantic, Fort Belvoir, VA (PCA - Evangel) I am expected to move to a new assignment in the summer of 2021 and this is the time of year when I should receive orders for a permanent change of station (PCS). Although we have been on this PCS

rollercoaster ride several times over our 20+ years on active duty, it never gets any easier for our family and me to say goodbye to dear friends and work through the long list of to-do’s before the big move. Plus, this time will be even more emotional knowing we will move without our daughter, Emma Kate, being stationed with us as we anticipate her starting her new college adventures in the fall semester. However, we hope she will join us this summer as we begin establishing ourselves in our new location. Always a crazy-busy, but fun adventure serving for God and Country. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for my wife Lori and me as we work through the emotions and stresses of another military move. Pray that the Lord would sustain us and guide us safely to our new place of ministry and service to our nation. Also, please pray for our daughter, Emma Kate, as she begins her freshman year of college. Pray that the Lord watches over her and keeps her in His perfect will as she broadens her horizons in a new city. EMAIL: [email protected] 10 Wednesday CH (CPT) Sebastian Kim, USA, 710th BSB, Fort Polk, LA (PCA - Southern New England) We are currently

homeschooling our children and we are still learning how to do it. My assistant is leaving the Army this

month and a new one is coming soon. Chaplain Conklin (PCA) left for Germany, Chaplain Godwin (PCA) is in Garrison. We are currently dealing with a very intense training period. I had to help Soldiers in a serious (non-fatal) accident. In general, Soldiers are overly stressed and concerned about safety. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for the Soldiers’ physical safety. For the Soldier to know the God that can bring real safety. For the decisions I have to make for my mother’s well-being now that she is a widow. EMAIL: [email protected]

11 Thursday CH (1LT) Mitchell Sutton, USA, IMT unit (1-40th FA) , Fort Sill, OK (ARPC - Virginia Presbytery) As I write we are anticipating graduation from the Chaplain Officer Basis Course and the birth of our second daughter, Callie Mae. In January I will be assigned to an Initial Military Training unit (1-40th FA) at Ft. Sill and look forward to the various ministry opportunities there. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for the young men and women who are volunteering to put on the uniform and serve the United States. Please pray that I will be a faithful servant of God as I seek opportunities to share the Gospel to Soldiers. Please pray for my family as we welcome a new member and transition to our first assignment. EMAIL: [email protected] 12 Friday CH Donald Johnson, CovenantCare at Home, St. Charles, IL (PCA - Chicago Metro ) As a hospice Chaplain, it is a privilege to bring the love and hope of the Gospel to people living with life-limiting illness. What can be a hard season for many is now often compounded by separation from loved ones due to COVID-19 precautions. Fatigue and fear sometimes hover on the horizon. Yet, in such a season, the Light and Comfort of the Gospel brings an extra measure of healing and hope. “How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who announces peace...who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.” PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for patients and families to know and sustain themselves through the hope of the Gospel; for all to be protected from illness; and for our team to not grow weary in doing good. EMAIL: [email protected] 13 Saturday CH Phillip Binnie (PCA - South Florida) I would like to thank the PRCC for its many years of support while serving as a Chaplain for the Veterans Health Administration. I started part-time at the Tampa VA in 1986 after serving on the staff of L’Abri Fellowship Switzerland from 1974-1977. After graduating from Covenant Seminary in 1982 my wife and I served at L’Abri Fellowship

Netherlands in 1983. Then we served at L’Abri Fellowship Switzerland from 1984 -1986. We were unsuccessful at getting a Work Permit from the Swiss Government so returned to Tampa and briefly lived with my parents until moving to our own apartment. God gave me a love for Veterans and granted me the privilege to serve full-time at the Miami VA from 1989 until retirement as Chief Chaplain in June of this year. What a wonderful opportunity to serve a sometimes unappreciated population - Veterans of this nation who have served to preserve our Liberty and Freedom, never to be taken for granted. My love for the Veterans began with my own father who served in World War II in the Army Counter-Intelligence Corp (CIC) in the European Theater. Towards the end of his life he shared many stories through the early morning hours of his experiences gathering intelligence, as the allies marched toward Berlin. He left me a box of pictures taken of German POW’s. Sadly, some were of the concentration camps. I will always treasure these and pass them on to my children as a stark reminder that “Freedom is not Free.” At the beginning of my tour the majority of Veterans were from the World War II era. Now the majority are Vietnam era Veterans, followed by Veterans of the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Veterans who served all over in the Global War on Terrorism. My recommendation is that Active Duty, Reservists, and National Guard Chaplains consider serving fellow Veterans who are hospitalized whenever you transition. Look up The National VA Chaplain Service if you have not already. To all those who prayed for me and for our Chaplains: Thank you. Please continue to pray for our Military and Civilian Chaplains and the exceptional work they do. We are in this together. EMAIL: [email protected] PRCC NOTE: Thank you Chaplain Binnie, you have blessed so many! Thank you for your service 1989 until retirement this year! 14 Sunday LTJG Jim Pulizzi, CHC, USN, USS Tortuga (LSD-46), Norfolk, VA (PCA - James River) I will report to Officer Development School in Newport, RI for 5 weeks

of training followed by 7 weeks of Chaplain school. I am expected to graduate on April 20, 2021. We have received verbal orders to USS Tortuga (LSD-46) in Norfolk, VA. The ship is currently in the yards for repairs but is expected to finish up by the end of the year. We are looking forward to this new ministry context and are excited to be in Hampton Roads, as my family is in the area and we won’t be too far from friends we have made these past four years in Richmond, VA. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for my family while I am away for training, as this will be our first time of prolonged separation. We are also planning to sell our home in Richmond and will be thinking through all the decisions that come with a PCS move in the spring. Please pray that I will be focused on sharing the Gospel even in the midst of this training environment! EMAIL: [email protected] 15 Monday CH (CPT) Joshua Jackson, USA, Deployed to Jordan (OPC - Presbytery of the Midwest) Greetings from Jordan! Nine months of deployment have passed and a few months yet remain. It has been a busy time of great ministry and heavy burdens. I have the privilege of working with a phenomenal group of Chaplains to provide a robust chapel ministry that is reaching a large group of Service Members with the Gospel on a weekly basis. I have also been busy providing classes for my Soldiers to help them cope with the stress of deployment and develop better strategies for self-care and spiritual resiliency. We continue to grieve and feel the effect of the loss of one of our brave Warriors, but the Lord is ever gracious to provide peace and comfort. We look forward to finishing our mission strong and returning to Texas this year. PRAYER REQUESTS: My Battalion: May we have the wherewithal to give maximum effort during the final leg of deployment. My Wife: May she find favor and success as her Masters studies culminate and she begins working in her field. My Children: May they know Christ above all, and may they find comfort in Him during this health crisis and time apart from their father. EMAIL: [email protected]

16 Tuesday CH (LCDR) Johan Baik, USAR NR Religious Support - MEF, Bell Gardens, CA, Bell Gardens, CA (PCA - Korean Southwest) The US Penitentiary, where I work as prison Chaplain, has been locked down for a year now; initially, due to multiple fights, but then, a nationwide lockdown necessitated due to COVID-19. Before November, the United States Penitentiary began to open up for normal operations for a short time. However, repeated fights are causing the institutions to lockdown time and again. I have not been able to gather the Protestant community for worship in over a year now. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for their mental and spiritual health. The Navy Reserves have been gathering for drill weekend over MS TEAMS. This platform has been workable to accomplish tasks, but not as much for ministering to the troops. Pray that the restrictions are lifted so that I will be able to more easily interact and minister to the troops. EMAIL: [email protected] 17 Wednesday CH (CPT) Chris Crain, USA, HHBN, III Corps, Fort Hood, TX (PCA - Palmetto) My unit successfully redeployed and is now in the process of several Warfighter exercises, which we will complete in early spring. Fort Hood has experienced many negative and highly publicized events in 2020, including the tragic murder of Soldier Vanessa Guillen. Fort Hood has responded to the toxic culture with an initiative to put people first, rebuild trust, and invest in Soldier and Family care. I am set to PCS in the summer of 2021 to God's ordained place, as of now unknown to me. Malachi is applying to colleges and will make a decision in the spring. Miriam is doing well in the Army's Doctor of Physical Therapy program and Eden is wrapping up her junior year at Winthrop University in SC. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for the Spirit of God to move afresh

on Fort Hood, granting life and faith to leaders, Soldiers, and Family members. Pray for all the Chaplains here to have wisdom to best integrate in their units, have favor with their leadership and Soldiers, and boldness to proclaim the Truth of life. For my family, please pray for my children to do well in their pursuits. Next August, Nancy and I will have an empty nest and be at a new duty station. Pray for her to find fulfilling ways to use her gifts and for me to glorify God and shine light within my unit. EMAIL: [email protected] 18 Thursday CH Kyle Schmidt, Comfort Hospice LLC, Brentwood, MO (PCA - Missouri) The Honor Veterans Program is growing to become a wonderful opportunity for me to serve veterans and their families in our community hospice program. I continue to struggle on behalf of our patients and staff in prayer. I am not ashamed of the Gospel for it is the power of God unto salvation for everyone who believes. I am thankful for my calling at Comfort Hospice. We have all been challenged by the pandemic, but we share a glorious inheritance in the Gospel. I ask for your prayers. Your emails mean much encouragement to me. PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for our volunteers and staff for safety and strength. Pray for my family with homeschooling and growth in grace for Ada (9) Ezra (7) and Elise (5). Pray for boldness for me to speak how I ought to speak and to continue with strength in this ongoing service. EMAIL: [email protected] 19 Friday CH Bee Kirk, AnMed Health System , Anderson, SC (PCA - Calvary) We just moved to SC and have many home projects underway. I am looking forward to getting into the Chaplaincy program at AnMed, as Jesus has blessed me with this new opportunity. Separately, I am an adjunct professor at Erskine Theological Seminary and will be teaching some classes next year. PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for my son, Ross. He has brain cancer. A doctor has given him 8-10 years of life. Pray for new technology to rid him of his cancer and that the Lord will give him many years of life. Pray for

my wife, Mercedes. She needs to gain weight and eat more. She has bone pain from osteoporosis. Pray for health! Pray for a full-time faculty opportunity for me at Erskine. EMAIL: [email protected] 20 Saturday CH (Capt) Brad DeVries, 189th Airlift Wing , Little Rock AFB, AR (PCA - Covenant) I am grateful to God to extend the ministry and influence of the local church in my role as a Chaplain in the ANG. My home is about eight minutes from the gate of Little Rock AFB and the church about 15 minutes away, so we have a steady turnover of military personnel. After several years on active duty and reserves, this appeared to be a good and appropriate fit as minister in the area. Though I am on base for only two days a month, I look forward to building relationships with full-time staff and traditional ANG Airmen. We hold short worship services in adherence to COVID-19 restrictions but spend a good share of the time in personal visitation and counseling. PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray for growing relationships and trust between the Chaplain and the ANG Wing. Pray for courage in Christ, confidence in the Gospel and compassion to
