TRANSCRIPT
I
As a waiy of introduction - the Grove has had its name since the early nineteen fourties when this school changed from Oregon Normal to Oregon College of Education. The yearbook before this time had been called the Norm even though the Grove planted in 1869 (at the sight of new Campbell Hall, and destroyed in the Columbus Day storm of 1962} , was a vital part of this school's tradition.
Some critics would like the name of the yearbook changed because it has little meaning since the actual Grove was destroyed. And others believe that we should work toward the planting of another Grove. It is the opinion of this year's staff that the name should be retained and a new Grove replanted.

The Sophomore Class did not seem to have the initiative present in the other three classes. It had no outstanding activities during the year, but this is usually the case with Sophomore Classes. It's as though they were saving their energy for the Junior year-or at least let's hope so.

Dr. Broderson, in many aspects of his life, quietly and purposefully goes about his daily tasks neither anticipating nor seeking recognition.
Hoping the pleasure it will bring him in this small notice of recognition, out meas. ures of his modesty, the Grove staff and the student body proudly names Dr. Ray Bro· derson outstanding faculty leader for 1964.65. Arbuthnot Hall, Arby, as it is called, dedicated in January of 1963, is a modern three story structure housing 162 women. Arby, as most large residence halls, has a dominate floor government that makes it almost impossible to create a total workinig body. Each unit, because of its size, functions as a separate organization sponsoring its own firesides and dances.

THE COTTAGE
The Cottage is a traditional two-story house, originally an honorary, housing only Senior women. It now consists of 29 women with a Senior as Head Resident. Because of its smallness the girls seemingly at'e a dose knit group.
As indicated by the pictures, The Cottage occasionally holds fireside exchanges with other residence halls.

MAASKE HAll Maaske Hall, built in 1956, houses 112 men. Contrary to conditions in most large residence halls, Maaske' s central government is more dominant than floor organization. This is well indicated by the many awards won in the past. But during the year of 1962 Maaske found an arch rival in the newly converted residence hall, Arnold Arms. Since 1962 Maaske and Arnold Arms have been rivals in all campus activities.

TODD HALL Mrs. Coverdale Head Resident
Todd Hall was built in 1912 in the traditional style with accommodations for 170 women. Later remodeling has produced several unusual and attractive features. The once dining room-kitchen area was converted in 1960 to another spacious living room-lounge where students can relax and enjoy its informal atmosphere. The Hall this year redecorated its main lounge and created a museum in a lower halfway.

THE VILLAGE Mrs. Dooley Head Resident
The Village consists of aparrtment buildings appropriated through the federal government in 1946 with the enactment of the GI Bill of Rights. The apartments were mainly for married students, but due to an overflow, 76 men and 35 women are forced to live here. Winter Term saw most of The Village moving into the new residence hall. This will present a unique situation with men and women living in the same residence hall. It is hoped that with the transfer to new facilities that the organizational qualities of The Village's government will improve.

OFF CAMPUS Off-Campus consists of students not residing in dormitories. This year a change in policy and the crowded conditions on campus allows students other than Juniors and Seniors to live in homes and apartments. Lack of organization has hampered their social functioning and participation in campus activities. Frank Nudo-pictured-made an attempt at organizing the commuters but few were willing to respond.

The Lamron, intended to keep students and faculty in touch with campus activities, has been greatly criticized this year by many representative groups of students. During the middle of the year, the Lamron staff tried to change to offset printing; but the editor and staff found it diffi. cult to convert to the new style, although it was less expensive than the other method. This change in plans and the resulting inadequacy of the budc,et made it necessary for the staff to eliminate many issues throughout the year. It is the consensus of the majority of the student body that the Lamron could be improved in many ways.

Organization for Spirit and Tradition
A new group on campus, the Organization for Spirit and Tradition may prove to be very important to the overall atmosphere at OCE. Organized fall term by students concerned with the lack of school spirit, the club performed many service3 such as informing students of athletic contests, having the victory bell at as many games as possible, creating "Waldo Wolf" to join the rally at games, and sponsoring events to acquaint the student body with our athletes. OST is interested in renewing such traditions as class gifts, and in replanting the grove. If this organization can continue with the work it has begun, there will be much improvement in school spirit at OCE.

Student Oregon Education Association
Membership in SOEA is open to all students in teacher education. The club attempts to foster better teaching and better candidates for the teaching program. This year's SOEA found lack of organization and lack of student interest a definite problem, which they tried to solve with the help of student questionaires. It is hoped that through reorganization and new ideas, SOEA can become the vital club that it should be on this campus.

Inter -Varsity seeks to present a corporate witness of Jesus Christ and to deepen and strengthen the spiritual life of Christians on campus through their various activities. In addition to weekly meetings, IVCF sponsored special evening meetings, Friday morning breakfast programs, dorm Bible studies, and prayer meetings. Social exchanges were held with IVCF groups from surrounding college campuses. One of this year's major projects was sending eleven members to the worldwide Inter-Varsity Missionary Conference at Urbana, Illinois.

UCCF is an organization of students and faculty for study, worship, and fellowship. This inter-denominational group meets for Sunday morning seminars, Sunday evening symposiums, and a mid-week discussion on topics of interest to students of all faiths. This year a familiar figure to OCE students was Rev. Phil Hanni, our first full-time campus minister, who was active leader of UCCF,

Hui O Aloha fhe Hawaiian club was organized to strengthen the ties between Hawaii and the Continent through social and informative functions. Members must have resided in Hawaii for at least one year. The Hawaiian dance, "There's No Place Like Hawaii", and the Hawaiian barbecue assisted members in carrying on the traditions of Aloha.
International relations were
of paramount concern during 1964 -1965 !

Political Clubs Thrive During Elect ions
Young Democrats
The election year of 1964 saw increased participation in both of the political groups on campus. One of the reasons for this was the fact that Mr. Hess required that each member of his classes join one or the other of the political clubs. As election time drew near, campus politicians were on hand to register voters, introduce candidates at Polk County fairgrounds, and to take an active part in other related election functions.
Young Republicans
During the national campaign, interest in the campus political organizations ran high, but after elections, participation declined sharply. Although in pre-campaign weeks the Young Republicans assisted in such camp::iign activities as checking voter registration at the polls and encouraging voter response, lack of student interest was evident during the remainder of the year.

Court with escorts show excitement of Homecoming game-from right to left: Queen Marilyn Scott, Junior Nancy Good; back from the left, Sophomore Marianne Longacre, and Freshman Jeanne Fowler.
Homecoming was again homecoming with the first bonfire since 1961. The bonfire was not fully enjoyed because a number of activities were planned for the same evening-not giving it a chance to start burning. However, Emily Bump and Kerry Koopman, as· cochairmen, had things so well planned that they made a profit. Their efforts are to be congratulated. Activities included: dorm activities award, won by Arnold Arms; student talent show, coronation; bonfire and noise parade; dorm open houses; Homecoming Game, OCE vs. SOC; faculty talent show and announcement of "Who's Who"; and the Homecoming Ball.

Dads' Day A unique situation occurred when student council found themselves without a chairman three weeks before Dads Day-but Roger, Financial Secretary, volunteered to head the task. Even with this limited time element Dads Day was well prepared. Activities included: a football game, (OCE vs. George Fox), IK Barbecue, dance, band concert, Dads Club meeting, dormitories and buildings tours, banquet, and meeting of the faculty coffee.

Oregon College of Education held its most successful blood drive in recent years under the chairmanship of Cheryl Bohanon. This was attributed to an inter-dormitory competition that saw Arnold Arms as the winner, (pictured: Cheryl presenting Ron Keyes, President of Arnold Arms, with campus trophy). Over 3 75 students contributed their blood to the Red Cross in dorm competition as well as an attempt to win an inter-collegiate contest between Portland State College, Southern Oregon College, Lewis and Clark College, Linfield, and Willamette University.

Basketball Coach McCullough's team found itself at the bottom cf the Oregon Collegiate Con£ erence toward the end of the season. However, at the beginning of the season it looked as though our team had a chance at possibly placing in the Oregon Collegiate Conference. But as the season progressed cur team went on to lose a number of close decisions which made c ur chances of placing impossibfe.
Dave Sturgis led the O.C.E. team in both rebounds and scoring. Stu Merchant, although plagued by injuries, proved a competent scorer and in addition estahlished a new 25 rebound record in a sin1gle game. Freshmen Bill Coutts and Junior letterman Dave Pappin presented one of the most impressive backcourts in co,nference play. Even though our team did not do its best, this has been labeled a building year, since there were no Seniors on the starting line-up-hopes are high for next year.

My fellow students:
As we entered this institution in the fall of 1961 there lay before us the unique opportunity of self-betterment through the academic world. And now, as we near the completion of those requirements there looms on the horizon one glaring and imposing thought -have we really taken advantage of those opportunities offered to us? Did we attain as much as we would have desired from education, major course material, .etc., for the majority of us the shameful truth is no! I realize that hindsight is so much easier to appf y than foresight in this instance now that we are Seniors. However, we should realize that we, as students, ha,,e not taken full ad,,antage of the situation presented to us. But, as we go on to further degrees or practical work in the classroom it is of a paramount nature that we have the foresight to realize the latter.
As most of us are entering the field of teaching next year, or shortly after graduate school, we can here fulfill our duties of leadership and responsibility to this country as future teachers working in the classroom and the community. We should welcome this responsibility as is illustrated in the words of our late president. "In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of def ending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility-I welcome it." A democracy such as ours demands that we take this responsibility through character building, self-restraint, and self. discipline. To provide the best education obtainable, we must have the best trained teachers who realize their responsibility and leadership potential. My fellow students, this is our responsibility. This is the area where we shall take an active role and, through constructive criticism develop an educational system which shall further promote the growth of the American concept of life.
