HEALTH & BEAUTY .1312. HEALTH & BEAUTY

When the sun starts shining most of us start to think more about our health and fitness. Prepare for Summer and de-grease your diet by following our top tips on keeping and feeling healthy!

SHAPE UP FOR SUMMER

PORRIDGE FOR BREKKIE! Packed with minerals, vitamins, protein and dietary fibre, porridge oats are also 100 per cent natural, with no added sugar, salt or additives. A bowl in the morning will keep you full until lunchtime so you won’t snack on sweets!

FORGET FATTY, SUGARY DESSERTS! Get your sweet treat fix by having a colourful fruit salad!

REDUCE YOUR PORTIONS! It might not just be what you’re eating, but how much of it. Try a week of reducing around 10% of the not-so-healthy stuff from your plate.

LOSE THE CHIPS! They go with everything. The trouble is they aren’t good for you AT ALL. Try swapping your chips for a few sweet potatoes and some veg or salsa.

GRIDMAG.CO.UK

CARBOHYDRATES The biggest part of your plate should be made up of starchy foods such as bread, rice, potatoes or pasta as these are high in the energy that your body needs. Choose brown or wholemeal varieties for a healthier option.

PROTEIN Protein is essential for your body to recover after exercise, so don’t forget to include this in your meals too. Protein can be found in any kind of meat or fish, as well as eggs, beans and nuts. It can also be found in dairy products but these can be high in fat so be careful with your portions sizes of these!

FRUIT & VEGETABLES Your ‘5 a day’ fruit and veg portions should be made up of a variety of colours – aim to ‘Eat a Rainbow’ to get the most amount of vitamins into your diet.

SUGAR Sweets and treats should be limited as they contain lots of bad fats and sugars which can be bad for your heart and teeth. Swap them for healthier options such as water or fruit.

EXERCISE Remember you should aim to be active for at least 60mins every day so try to keep these tips in mind when choosing your meals to allow you to get the most fun out of your games and activities!

Food provides us with the energy we need in order for our bodies to work at its best. If you are exercising or taking part in sports then the food that you eat beforehand can have a big impact on how well you perform. There are 5 main groups that you should aim to have in every meal.

Step 3 - Cut your nails to the length you want using nail clippers.

Step 4 - Shape your nails using a nail file. Make sure you filethem in one direction toward the centre of the nail (don’t go back and forth).

Step 5 - Apply a tiny drop of cuticle oil to each finger andmassage them in a clockwise/anti-clockwise direction. Gently push the cuticles on your fingernail back using the flat end of a cuticle pusher.

Step 6 - Apply hand lotion just on your hands & not yournails. Rub a cotton pad over your nails to remove leftover oil & moisture.

Step 7 - Apply a clear base coat on each nail, this willprotect your nail from staining.

Step 8 - Apply any nail polish in the colour of your choice. You should always apply nail polish using 3 strokes, one from the centre base to the tip and one on each side. Re- apply a 2nd coat when the previous coat is completely dry.

Step 9 - Apply a clear top coat on each nail. It helps the nailpolish last longer. Please note Refresh Spa users must be aged 16+ www.emiratesarena.co.uk/refresh-spa

SPORT SPORT EMIRATES .2726. SPORT EMIRATES REPORTER

GRIDMAG.CO.UK

We sent Katharine Gemmell, our Emirates Arena Reporter

competition winner to check out the World Cup Gymnastics

and the Indoor Athletics to give us her take on these fantastic

sporting events!

On the 8 December 2012 The World Cup Gymnastics

took place in the brand new Emirates Arena. The

Glasgow World Cup was one of ten artistic World Cup

events in 2012, with Glasgow hosting the UK’s only

round of competition. Women and men were pushed

to their limits to perfectly perform their routines in

front of the judges and a sold out arena. The audience

was energetic and ready for a day of sporting

excellence.

The atmosphere was electric as the men kicked it off

with the floor exercise - the strength and stamina

which each athlete possessed was stunning. Great

Britain’s Kristian Thomas demonstrated a sublime

double tuck, topping the first round with 15.8. With

the woman’s vault next Elizabeth Price of the USA

came out on top with 15.9. Great Britain’s Niamh

Rippen and Team GB’s youngest member Rebecca

Tunney both showed a great start to the delight of

the crowd.

Perhaps the athlete with the loudest cheers of the

day was Daniel Purvis, the 2012 Olympic team bronze

medal winner with Team GB, who is set to represent

Scotland in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Purvis

shined on the Pummel horse, to a heartbeat piece of

music which left the audience on the edge of

their seats.

The men’s rings was an exciting one to watch - the only

piece where the athletes not only have to stabilise

themselves but also their apparatus. Marcel Nguyen

of Germany, topped this round. Purvis also displayed

why he won his medal this summer.

The second round brought the men’s vault and the

woman’s beam. The crowd gasped at Yusuke Saito’s

nasty landing on the side of his legs and

Rebecca Tunney’s fall from the beam.

The gripping day came to a finish with Elizabeth

Price gaining a deserved Gold followed by Germany’s

Elizabeth Seitz and Kim Bui in Silver and Bronze.

In the men’s, Germany’s Marcel Nguyen was the clear

winner, with Japan’s Yusuke Saito in second and GBs

Daniel Purvis winning the bronze in what was

a very memorable day overall.

If you’re in a band, a Singer-Songwriter,DJ or Rapper

and would like to feature on our page, drop us an

email at: [email protected]

and we’ll send you a submission form!

Holly Wilson is an unsigned artist studying in Glasgow. With a

prominent Scottish accent and natural husky tones she has an

individuality that simply cannot be matched…

How did you first get into performing?

I’d been playing and writing my own songs for a few years

before I had the nerve to perform in front of anyone, but

a friend told me about gigs she’d been doing and I decided

to give it a go. My material went down well so I decided to

start performing a bit closer to home.

How would you describe your music? Some songs are catchy pop, but my new song Veins is more

funky with a catchy bass riff. I’d say it was a cross section

of folk, pop, funk and blues.

Who are your influences? At the moment it’s Alt-J but others include The White Stripes,

Van Morrison, Mazzy Star.

What are your plans for the band in 2013?

I’m in the process of finishing recording a Demo which will

be released later this year which features two tracks –

‘Veins’ and ‘Season Change’. I’ll also be continuing to play

in venues across the UK and maybe even further afield

come Autumn.

What bands/ singer-songwriters do you admire?

I’m a huge admirer of Scottish acts. My favourite would

have to be Frightened Rabbit who my dad introduced me to!

What did you last use your Young Scot Card for?

I probably used it for a Topshop discount!

Tell us something our readers might like to

know about you? I’m always looking for feedback from listeners on what

songs they like/don’t like so leave a comment on my

Facebook or Soundcloud and I’ll be sure to reply.

Look out for my upcoming demo which will be available

for download later in 2013.

How would you describe your music?

I wouldn’t say it’s one style. I have a fairly strong Glasgow

accent that doesn’t seem to shift when I sing. I’m a huge fan of

Folk which comes through in my lyrics and melodies, but most

times there’s a good beat to tap along to.

Who are your influences? I find new influences all the time. It can be an artist I like or a

lyric will inspire a way of thinking.

What are your plans for 2013?

My album release! I also want to play at festivals, plenty

of shows and hopefully start a fan base and build a name

for myself.

What bands/ singer-songwriters do you admire?

I’m really into Mike Rosenbergs album but my favourites are

Mumford & Sons, Ben Howard and Kings Of Leon.

What album or artist do you have on repeat

at the moment? My manager, Maeve O’Boyle’s album Being Patient.

What did you last use your Young Scot Card for? To go swimming.

Keep up to date with me on Facebook and Twitter @Ryanmdmusic.

You were a runner up in City Sounds 2010 –

tell us a bit about the experience?

I applied in my last year of school aiming to get a bit of help

and advice with my music and hopefully play my first live gig,

but I got so much more from it!

What have you been up to since then?

I completed my HNC in Commercial Music and I’m working

towards my HND. I’ve signed to Toy Town Records and played

some support tours in Scotland and Sweden.

How did you get into performing? Through the MIMA Project which I joined after City Sounds.

I worked on my songwriting and performance. From there I

played some small local gigs and worked my way up to bigger

profile ones like supporting Admiral Fallow.

She added: “My World of Work is a great starting point as it has all the information you need about jobs and which roles you would be suited to. We have a great tool on the site called My Strengths that will help you understand what you’re good at so that you can choose a job based on your abilities”.

My World of Work also has details about training, so if you’ve always fancied being a Modern Apprentice, you can find out more by visiting the site.

My World of Work can help you make sense of the options available. It can give you a better understanding of your strengths so that you can decide which job could be perfect for you; it can also help with practical advice such as completing job applications.

Kate Hooper, editor of the interactive careers site said:

Exam time can feel quite stressful but so too can the decision about what to do afterwards. Many young people don’t know where to turn to find out about their options.

The site is also packed with all the latest on what it’s like to work in jobs in different areas - such as tourism and life sciences. For example, did you know that 61% of people working in tourism are female? Or that there are over 9,500 people in Scotland working with medical technology?

REAL LIFE .37

Everyone goes through difficulties in life and it’s

normal to feel down sometimes.

Worries about our relationships,

home life, money, school or

work can build up if we feel

we have no-one to share them

with. There are places to go

for support and people to talk

to, face to face, or by phone

or email. When someone feels

very down and thinks that life

won’t get any better then they

may think about suicide. When

someone feels like this, or if

we are worried someone else is

‘It’s OK to Ask’ is a short film made by young people in North East Glasgow.

It looks at what can make us feel down and even suicidal and suggests ways

you can get help. The young people who made the film have experiences of

feeling suicidal or of helping their friends when they are feeling suicidal so

they know what they are talking about.

ORGANISATIONS BELOW:These organisations offer support on a variety of issues or

worries, including the death of someone close to you.

IT’S OK TO ASK You can see It’s OK to Ask on the You Tube channel

There are lots of other short film clips on the

channel too. You can watch the film on youtube or

you might want to suggest your teacher or youth

worker uses it to get people talking about suicide in

your school or youth club.

important to get help. Often it’s

friends and family that people

turn to first so it’s important for

us all to know what to do if we

are worried about suicide.

The first thing we all need to

about suicide. Asking someone if

they are thinking about suicide

does not put the idea of it into
