St. Gregory the Great

Mission Statement

St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live.

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT SPECIAL COLLECTION During his visit to Brazil for World Youth Day in 2013, Pope Francis said, “The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need.” With these words, Pope Francis continues to bring our attention back to the poor and to our responsibility toward them. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) responds directly to his call by addressing the root causes of poverty in the United States. CCHD funds programs in communities across the United States. By giving a hand up, rather than a handout, CCHD helps people living in poverty join together to identify problems, make decisions and find ways to improve their lives and their neighborhoods. Your support helps to end poverty through building solidarity in our communities. Please visit www.povertyusa.org to read more details about CCHD’s efforts to spread Christ’s love by helping to break the cycle of poverty in your community and across the country. We will take up a second collection next weekend, Nov. 19-20, at all our Masses for the support of the work of CCHD. Please be as generous as your means allow. TAIZE PRAYER SERVICE On Sunday, Nov. 20, we will be hosting a Taize Prayer service beginning at 4p.m. in Church. Taize prayer involves simple chanting in the Taize style, a Scripture reading, intercessory prayer, and an opportunity for silent prayer and reflection before an icon of Jesus, Mary or one of the saints. If you have never experienced this form of prayer before, please consider joining us.

PARISH TRANSFORMATION UPDATE #7

Our recent Parish Transformation meeting began by reviewing and summarizing the work that we have accomplished thus far. We were then invited to continue with the next step in the process which is the development of a theme that we see emerging from our discussions and the lived experience of our parish. A tool that will help us in the development of this theme or vision is the choice of one or more of the mission building blocks we have reflected upon over the past weeks. We see evangelization and catechesis as key mission building blocks for the ongoing transformation of our parish. It is clear that several common elements have emerged from our discussions and sharing. These elements include an outward focused parish, a faith community that is comfortable to share who we are, what we are about and what we believe with others, and a community that is characterized by intentional disciple-ship. In the next two weeks we will create a parish narrative that describes how we hope to see our parish experience transformation as we move into the future. We will also begin to develop an action plan which will consist of some new initiatives that we want to accomplish in the next three to four years. Please continue to pray for our Parish Transformation Team and the work they are doing to renew and transform our parish that it might become more vital and dynamic. Thank you.

International Chamber Artists 2016-17 “Collaboration in Concert” season continues

with concert featuring works for cello

“Champion Cello” program includes works by Frank Bridge, Brahms, and Handel

Sunday, November 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the National Shrine of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Sunday, November 13 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church

CHICAGO – The International Chamber Artists (ICA) continues its 2016-17 season on Sunday, November 6 at 1:30 p.m. at

the National Shrine of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini (2520 N. Lakeview, Chicago). The theme of the season, “Collaboration in

Concert,” celebrates ICA’s partnerships and joint performances with a range of leading Chicago-area artists and organiza-

tions. Join ICA at the season’s second concert, which features ICA cellist Jocelyn Butler in chamber works by Frank Bridge,

Brahms, and Handel, led by Artistic Director Patrick Godon. The program will be repeated on Sunday, November 13 at 4:00

p.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church (5535 N. Paulina, Chicago).

The concert, entitled “Champion Cellist,” includes the Phantasie Trio in C minor by Frank Bridge; the celebrated Cello Sonata

No. 1 in E minor, Op. 38 by Johannes Brahms; and the Passacaglia from the Harpsichord Suite No. 7 in G Minor by George

Frideric Handel, arranged by Johan Halvorsen for violin and cello. "All cellists look forward to the chance to play such an

expressive and exciting program that shows off the full range of the cello and confirms the reason why the cello is a favorite

among most listeners," said Butler.

Following each ICA concert, audience members are invited to mingle and join the performers at a buffet dinner hosted by

Ranalli’s of Andersonville (1512 W. Berwyn, Chicago; $15 including soft drinks and tip). Tickets for all ICA concerts are FREE

($15 donation recommended).

For a full listing of ICA’s 2016-17 season, visit www.icamusic.org.

YEAR OF MERCY WEEKLY ACTION STEP In the bulletin every week from now until the Feast of Christ the King on Nov. 20, 2016, we will publish in the bulletin a weekly action step that will help you to live out in a very practical way what the Year of Mercy is all about. We ask that every day in the week that follows, you look for opportunities to put that action step into practice.

The action step for this week is: Offer hospitality in your home to someone or a group of people you would normally never invite over.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: “What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now?

HURRICANE MATTHEW EMERGENCY APPEAL In early October, Hurricane Matthew killed over 1000 people and destroyed thousands of buildings and homes in the southeast United States and Caribbean. Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities teams are currently evaluating needs and providing emergency relief and support in the most affected areas. Please consider donating to support our sisters and brothers in the midst of their suffering. This work will continue throughout the long recovery period. Thank you for your prayers. To donate and for further updates, please visit: http://www.chicagopeaceandjustice.org/hurricane-matthew-appeal.

BABY BOTTLE PROJECT There is still time to return your baby bottle filled with spare change in support of the work of the Women’s Centers of greater Chicagoland. You can return your baby bottle to the Usher’s tables in the back of Church, or you can bring it to the Parish Center during the week. Thank you for your support of this very worthy cause which provides support and assistance to women experiencing crisis pregnancies.
