This annual event has been held for three years consecutively. This year, we have Segambut Welfare Association and Sathya Sai Baba Bhajan Kepong Unit as co-organizers to make the event a success. Approximately 300 children have participated in the drawing and colouring contest with the theme “Waste Separation” and 50 parents attended Takakura Home composting workshop. Dr. Wong Ruen Yuan, the president of Green and Blue Group, addressed the importance of practicing waste separation among the urban residents as the amount of garbage generated in the city is much higher than in rural area. By separate the garbage accordingly, we can reduce the negative impact to the environment. GGWK3, a happening family day indeed! See you in 2012!

Go Green With Kids 3The Green & Blue Group (G&BG) has successfully organized “Go Green

With Kids 3. This annual event has been held for three years consecutively. Thisyear, we have Segambut Welfare Association and Sathya Sai Baba BhajanKepong Unit as co-organizers to make the event a success. Approximately 300children have participated in the drawing and colouring contest with the theme

Recipe of making FruitPeel Enzymes

Takakura Method

Stet-By-Step guide toTakakura HomeComposting Method

1. Making a fermenting solutionMake fermenting solution by mixing

tempe, jaggery and water in an

airtight container for fermentative

micro-organisms to grow. 

2. Making the seed compostMix rice bran and rice husk and stir 

in with fermenting solutions to form

a fermenting bed, then let the

mixture dry out.

3. Making a compost container 

Prepare a laundry baskets or 

storage boxes with the inside lined

with thick paper carton or carpet,

then fill 2/3 of the container with

seed compost.

4. CompostingMix the cut kitchen scraps into seed

compost, cover the container with

cloth to keep mixture warm. Repeat

the process until the container isfull. Store the removed compost for 

2 weeks to allow it to mature.

5. Using compostCompost gradual ly re leases

nutrients into the soil, thereby

improving the soil environment.

Takakura Home Composting Method

In the Takakura composting method, organic waste is broken down by microorganismsthat are cultivated from local materials. The method involves making a seed compostfrom fermented solutions and a fermenting bed. Organic waste is mixed with the seedcompost and left to degrade in a ventilated container or basket.

The participated parents were very excited and happy to receive the new method indoing composting, that is particularly suitable for those household with backyard to docomposting. The baskets and compost were given away to the participants of theworkshop, sponsored by Green and Blue Group.

Enzyme Making Hands on

Feeling guilty about the amount of rubbish generated by you? There are alot of benefits making organic enzymefrom fruit peel! With only a bit of brown sugar, chopped fruit peel fromfresh orange, pineapple and water,then leave it for 3 months. We can usethe end product for cleansing(mopping, dish washing etc) purpose!

Children and parents got to knowwhere have the rubbish gone oncethey threw it. Rubbish travels from theurban area, passes through oil palmplantation, greens, padi field,

mountains and arrive at the landfill.How much carbon emission, air pollution and water pollution havebeen produced? The kids would findout.

Editor’s Word:It was indeed a huge success to have Go Green With Kids 3 organized for thisyear! Many thanks to our co-organizers, Segambut Welfare Association andSathya Sai Baba Bhajan Kepong Unit, volunteers of different groups, media andmost importantly, the supportive parents and participants! The weather was too

good that it rained right after the event was ended. It is hoped that our nextgeneration will apply what they have leant today and share the concept of WasteSeparation with the community around them.Our Earth, Our Home!
