Note: The Princeton Review has an on-line newsletter with several subjects including a list of may colleges and scholarships and criteria to qualify for them.

The following information is from Jade Smith Shulist, Executive Director of The Princeton Review:

Some of the students took the SAT on October 10th. As you may know, The Princeton Review carefully monitors every SAT so that we can provide students with the most up-to-date information on the test. We thought you would be inter-ested in what we observed about the October test and how it might help you advise your students.

General Impressions When students complain about the SAT and say it’s hard, they’re exhibiting selective re-call. That is, they tend to remember the questions that gave them the most trouble, and quickly dismiss the questions they found manageable. Additionally, students generally rush through questions they find unremarkable and spend most of their time on questions they find difficult. The problem with this particular approach to the SAT is that it fails to ac-knowledge that all questions on the SAT are worth the same number of points and rushing is the single biggest mistake you can make on this test. Needless to say, this test had quite a few memorable questions.

Math Highlights Since the questions on the Math section are organized in ascending level of difficulty, students should be able to predict which questions will give them the most trouble. Additionally, students should also be aware of their own sets of strengths and weaknesses so they can recognize questions topics they know will give them trouble. Of course, the best way to determine what those topics are is to take practice tests. If you would like to organize a free practice test at your school, give us a call at 800-2REVIEW. Reading Highlights Students dread Critical Reading on the SAT. And it’s not necessarily because they have low com-prehension or don’t enjoy reading. If you asked a student – we mean really press him – why he doesn’t like the Reading section, you’d eventually discover that the reading itself isn’t so bad. Even the questions aren’t too daunting. No, the hardest part of the Critical Reading section is picking the right answer choice. You could ask a student open-ended ques-tions about the passages all day, but the second you give him answer choices to pick from, the test becomes a different animal altogether. Students really struggle here, not because they don’t understand the passage, but because they don’t know which answer choice the shadowy creators of the SAT deem correct. They’re not sure how deeply they should be reading into the text, whether they should be reading between the lines, or what to do when the question uses words such as imply, infer, and suggest. Again, learning a little about the test and its makers before going in there can mean huge benefits. Writing Highlights We found students generally felt comfortable with the Grammar questions but struggled a bit with the Essay topic, which, unfortunately, we’re not allowed to discuss here. Students need to realize that the graders of the Essay are looking for three important components in any essay:

1. The Essay must be clearly written and generally free of grammatical and spelling errors that could obfuscate the meaning of the writing.

2. The Essay must show strong organization with a well-defined introduction, body, and conclusion. 3. The thesis must be supported by concrete, specific, and appropriate examples. We found one essay topic gave students trouble with component #3, specifically, with finding appropriate historical ex-amples. Hopefully, they were able to regroup, consider a different genre to draw from, and write solid essays.

SAT or ACT: Which one is right for your students?

As many as a third of the students who take the SAT would actually do better on the ACT. Since any school that requires standardized test scores will accept either the SAT or the ACT, students should keep an open-mind about what has hith-erto oftentimes been the red-headed stepchild of College Admissions criteria. So, how do you nudge them in the right direction? The differences in content on the two tests allow for some generalizations:

Another way for students to determine which test is right for them is to jump right in! The Princeton Review offers the PRA (Princeton Review Assessment), which is a free four hour test that is half SAT & half ACT. Students can use the results to determine which one is right for them.

Students who do better on the SAT typically… Students who do better on the ACT typi-cally…

enjoy brain teasers or riddles enjoy science, economics, or debate

don't have to study to pass tests work hard in school to earn good grades

are "street smart" are "book smart" are good at reading between the lines are good writers have a good eye for detail are better at reading for general idea

COLLEGE INFORMATION FROM ACT: College Planning Ter ms Common or universal application: A form that allows a student to submit one application to many different schools. Both are available online: commonapp.org and universalcollegeapp.com. Some schools also require supplemental forms. Early decision: A binding agreement between you and the school. You apply early, and if admitted, are bound to attend the school. The application deadline occurs early and the admission decision is delivered early. Rolling admissions: A process in which a school reviews applications and makes decisions on them throughout the year. Early action: You can apply to an early action school and receive your admission response early. The decision is usually nonbind-ing, but you may need to agree to forgo applying to other early action/early decision institutions. When conditions apply it is some-times called Restrictive Early Action. Open admissions: An admissions policy, usually of public junior and community colleges, of accepting students without regard to their academic performance. Transcript: The official record of your educational achievements, provided by your high school. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): The key to unlocking student financial aid, it should be completed and sub-mitted as soon after January 2 as possible. The form and supporting information can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov. How Do Colleges Use ACT Scores? ACT scores are one of the tools universities use when selecting students for admission. They also use score reports for other pur-poses, such as course placement and student guidance. Here are five examples of ways universities use score reports: Admissions. ACT test results — along with high school grades, academic preparation, and extracurricular activities — help college admission officers identify which students will thrive at their institution. Scores alone do not determine admission. Course placement. ACT scores, academic background, and high school grades are used together to determine which college sec-tions would be most appropriate. Academic advising. College advisors look at ACT results, high school grades and classes, projected college grades, employment plans, and other factors to help students find the perfect fit for their course of study. Scholarships and loans. Some scholarships may use ACT scores and estimated grades to identify qualified candidates. ACT’s unique score report also provides information about students educational needs, extracurricular achievements, and educational plans. Joined with other data, agencies can evaluate applications for both scholarships and loans. ACT Writing Test. If students take this optional test, any college that receives their scores will also receive writing scores and com-ments along with subject area scores and a composite score. Colleges may review students essays to help them make admissions or course placement decisions. Narrowing down college options Finding a college that “fits” means taking into account majors, study abroad programs, internship opportunities, career placement success rates, and much more. Compiling data from many different schools can be challenging if you’re relying on marketing materi-als or information received during a campus visit. One easy way to get a snapshot of a potential school is to review its Common Data Set. These uniform reporting documents, which are provided by many four-year colleges and universities, contain a wealth of information, including admission rates, financial aid sources, high school course requirements and recommendations, and more. Here’s a sampling of the information you’ll find on a Common Data Set form: • The relative importance placed on various factors in an application review. • Freshman class profiles showing average GPA, ACT scores and class rank, which allows students to see their relative chances of

being admitted. • Tuition, room and board costs, as well as estimated expenses (books, transportation and others). • How financial aid is determined (using federal methodology, an institutional methodology or both), and how much and what

kinds of financial aid (loans, scholarships, need-based, merit-based) are awarded.

Scrip Update

A reminder to all parents and guardians – each family is required to offer a minimum of twenty-five (25) hours of service to the school for the 2009-10 school year. Families who prefer can opt out of the requirement by paying $250. It is the responsibility of each family to record their volunteer hours using the "2009-10 Family Volunteer Service Record Sheet" and submit the form to the school office. Copies of this form can be picked up in the main office or downloaded from the school website (click news, click parents, click Parent Volunteer Form).

It is important that families submit these forms as soon as hours have been completed so that the school’s re-cords are up to date, and are due no later than May 15th, 2010. Families will be billed for any unworked hours at a rate of $10.00 per hour as per school policy. A summary list will be printed in the March-May editions of the newsletter reflecting the school’s records of hours served by family.

The list of activities that count for service to school include: Service as part of any fundraising committees, Parent Teacher Guild (PTG), and Booster Club, school maintenance, transportation for field trips & sporting events, working as a team parent, selling tickets or working the snack bar at athletic events, and helping with hospitality (set-up/clean up for school events & donation of baked goods). Donated items (i.e. for fundraisers, athletics, etc.) may be exchanged for hours at a rate of one hour per $10 value only if agreed upon by a school administrator in advance.

Scrip News Our profound thanks to the many families and friends who continue to purchase gift certificates and gift cards from our scrip program… Even during the past year with its economic challenges, this fundraiser continued to be very successful (raising close to $30,000).

2009-2010 1st Quarter Summary (July 1st – September 30th):

Income = $24,997.38 Expenses = $18,790.44 Profit = $6,206.94

We do need to make an announcement regarding our previous policy of offering rebates of amounts raised by families beyond the threshold figure. Due to the fact that 1) those who purchase scrip receive the full value of their actual pur-chase, and 2) the funds raised are in fact considered donations to the school (a non-profit institution) by the vendors who support this program, we have been notified that we are compelled to utilize all funds raised for the school and therefore are unable to continue to offer rebates.

Shop Online! We are very pleased to announce a new addition to our Scrip Program. We are in the process of setting up an online purchasing program through Shop-to-Earn. This program provides links to 1200+ major retailers and eco-friendly companies with St. Bonaventure High School receiving cash back in amounts up to 30% on all purchases made through this shopping portal.

The advantages of this program include: Promotion of the use of green, environmentally-safe products Year-round fundraising by simply doing what we do everyday - shop for our basic necessities Access to nearly 100 environmentally-friendly, organic products that are good for our health and for the environment

(also paying higher cash back percentages (15% to 30%) on all purchases Stay tuned for information on how to make online shopping purchases to benefit SBHS. We anticipate adding a link to from the school website to this new portal by approximately November 1st.

The Girls Volleyball team is off to a great start. The team is currently 9-1 with a 4-1 league record. The Seraphs are ranked fifth in the CIF-SS Division II poll and are in a dogfight for the league title. Four TVL teams are currently ranked in the top seven of the latest CIF poll and are deadlocked for the league lead with one loss each. Juniors Hannah Hill, Hannah Harrison and Alyssa Tamsing continue to lead the way along with senior captain Kara Van Duzer. The JVs , under first year coach Janee Richards have also gotten off to a flying 8-1 start and a share of the TVL lead.

The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams have started off league where they left off last year as contenders to advance to the CIF postseason meets. The Boys led by Zach Noonan and Morgan Gilcrest have finished a solid second in both Fron-tier League matches to date. The Girls have been led by Natalie Gear, Kristin Mack and Shelby Barrios have also placed a solid second in the Frontier League leading to hopes that both teams will advance onto CIF for the second consecutive year.

The Football team finished the non-league portion of what could arguably be the toughest in school history with a 4-1 re-cord its only loss coming in overtime to undefeated Bishop Amat. The Seraphs played four teams that are projected to advance to the CIF Pac 5 Division (D1) play-offs along with LA City Section power LA Jordan with four of the games taking place on the road! Logan Meyer and Devon Blackledge lead a balanced offensive attack while Dylan Davis, Cody Kurz and Jalen Jefferson have been standouts on the defensive end of the field.

The Winter teams at SBHS have begun workouts in anticipation of their upcoming seasons. We hope to see you out there supporting these teams.
