The Green Flash And Other Maritime Mysteries

There is a rite of passage that young men in some parts of North America endure at the tender age of 12 or so — young enough to be fooled yet old enough not to be permanently traumatized. It’s called a snipe hunt.

Evening Dress Code: Crystal CasualWomen’s Crystal Casual includes:A blouse, sweater, dressy slacks, skirt, dressMen’s Crystal Casual can include:A sport coat, dress shirt, button-down shirt, open collar or collared polo shirt and dress pants or smart trousers (no tie required)

This legendary hunt involves an initi-ated elder weaving an elaborate tale about an elusive sea bird (the snipe in question) that can only be captured in the dark of night using a brown paper shopping bag and a flashlight. Armed with these simple tools, the youngster is taken to a lonely spot late on a moonless night and left to capture his prey. The drama ends when the initiate figures out it’s all a joke, and the joke’s on him.

There are many who believe that the “green flash” is the shipboard version of the snipe hunt. And, no wonder. How many of us have literally fried our eye-balls staring directly at the setting sun hoping to be one of the fortunate few to witness this legendary phenomenon?

How many of us actually know someone who has seen it — and can prove it? And how many of those people who claim to have actually seen it just happen to be officers on this ship? Is this all just an elaborate hoax by those handsome guys in the starched white uniforms? Nah. They’re not that mean.

Well, Then, What Is It?The green flash actually has a very

simple scientific explanation. As light

rays pass through the Earth’s atmo-sphere, they are refracted (bent) and spread out into a spectrum. The longest wavelengths (which are red) are at one end of the spectrum while the shortest (which are violet) are at the other. The shortest ones are bent the most.

As the sun sets, this dispersion of light is at its greatest and the spectrum is the most visible. The colors of the spectrum disappear one by one — the lowest red rays vanish first, while the green go last. We see it as a flash of green light. Why don’t we see violet last, you ask? Actually we do, but it’s the same color as the sky, so our eyes can’t sort it all out.

Now do you get it? It’s a rather simple phenomenon, really.

This factoid is also fascinating: the sun sets more slowly toward the north and south poles. Therefore, the slower the sun sets, the longer the flash lasts. In Norway, for example, the midsum-mer flash can last as long as 14 minutes as the sun dips below the horizon only briefly. Admiral Byrd reported a flash lasting 35 minutes in 1929. Being color blind, his dogs sadly missed it all.

...continued from front cover

Even with all this knowledge, you must remain vigilant. Be on the lookout for a very clear evening during sunset. It may be your very best chance of joining the elite clique of those lucky souls who’ve been witness to the elusive green flash. And keep a friend at your side, for you’re certainly going to need some corrobo-rating testimony or risk ridicule from your pals on board. (NOTE: Never stare directly at the sun, for obvious reasons.)

AirglowEver wonder how many animals and

some people can literally “see in the dark?” Well, this is courtesy of another of Mother Nature’s light shows. When oxygen and nitrogen recombine in the ionosphere, some energy is released by the reaction. Atoms become excited (you would too) and can radiate, emitting faint but visible light in the green and red regions of the spectrum. This produces the phenomenon known as airglow.

Airglow originates principally from altitudes above fifty miles. It is responsi-ble for the diffuse background light that makes it possible to distinguish objects on the Earth’s surface even on dark, moonless nights. This is also the last bit of helpful information you give your young snipe hunter before dropping him off on the lonely moors and driving off into the night.

AurorasThere is one other visual miracle

we may have a chance to see on our journey, or on a future one closer to the North and South Poles. It’s something called the aurora borealis, which is also known as the Northern Lights. Auroras actually occur in both hemispheres. On the flip side of the world, however, they’re called aurora australis and occur upside down. (No… just kidding for any Aussies on board.) Again, the further

toward a pole we go, the better our chances are of spotting an aurora.

In the Northern Hemisphere, auro-ras appear most frequently along a line running from northern Scandinavia, through Iceland, near the southern tip of Greenland, onto Hudson Bay, Alaska, and finally overhead of the folks colder than cold in Siberia.

But auroras have been known to show themselves as far south as 40 degrees latitude (think San Francisco, Sorrento or Seoul). In these lower latitudes, they tend to be mainly red and were believed by the ancients to be a sign of doom. Californians call it “earthquake weather.”

Auroras are created when solar winds bring charged particles into the Earth’s atmosphere (yes, another simple scien-tific explanation.) These particles are captured by our magnetic field and con-ducted downward toward both magnetic poles. The lights can move rapidly across the sky or hang nearly vertically, almost

AVENUE OF THE STARS BOUTIQUES, Tiffany Deck 6

motionless like heavenly drapes. And just as with snowflakes and fingerprints, no two aurora displays are exactly alike. Why We See Better at Sea

One of the greatest joys of our life at sea is the opportunity to study the heavens without interference from ambient light — the kind we get from cities on land. As ocean people, we are afforded the rare chance to witness these naturally-occurring phenomena in a purer environment. So, stroll about on deck each night before turning in and you, too, just might witness some of these awesome atmospheric attractions.

As American author Maxine Ting Hong Kingston observed, “Ocean people are different from land people. The ocean never stops saying and asking into our ears, which don’t sleep like eyes.”

Well, that just about sums it up. Scientifically. – Karyn L. Planett

Some things just belong together: Earth and Moon, Sherlock and Watson, milk

and cookies. Now there's another perfect pairing that is sure to delight: Lunch and

Lecture, an enriching new event at the Vintage Room.

Located between the Library and Silk Road on the port side of Promenade Deck 7 Aft,

our intimate Vintage Room was created to promote wine education and showcase the

fine wine selections offered on board during occasional daytime wine tastings and

wine-themed dinners.

Now you can enjoy this enriching experience during a special Lunch and Lecture on

Wednesday, January 29, at 11:45am in the Vintage Room.

Remember that incredible almond-crusted sole sautéed in butter you savored at that

cozy bistro in Paris? Or the time you discovered the perfect grilled lamb at an off-the-

beaten-path restaurant in Tuscany? Such exquisite dining moments usually arise from

the artful marriage of food and wine. But knowing which wine to pair with your meal

is an acquired skill, and our Lunch and Lecture event is designed to shed light on a

specific wine region as you enjoy a perfectly paired, savory multi-course menu.

Don't know a chardonnay from a pinot noir? No problem. Our Head Sommelier is

a highly trained expert happy to introduce you to the joy of wine appreciation with

an interactive and entertaining presentation where you'll start to cultivate your own

understanding of wine's delicious nuances. During your lunch, he will share fasci-

nating wine insights, offering complete tasting notes and explaining the unique

properties of the vintages with each course.

There is a nominal fee of $125 per guest for this exclusive Lunch and Lecture

experience.

For more information or to reserve your place at the event, please contact Head

Sommelier Jiri Kapal via the Reception Desk.

Jim Battaglia was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He received his bachelor’s degree at the State University of Buffalo. He worked as a recreation therapist for 35 years at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center where he frequently organized dance socials for the residents. Jim is an avid card, backgammon and Scrabble player, and also enjoys dining out, movies and sporting events. He feels fortunate that his post-retirement ventures take him to many exotic ports of call.

Luke Daniel was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest and immediately upon graduation left for Los Angeles to pursue a career as a professional dancer which he did for ten years. His highlight as a professional dancer was being selected as one of the lead dancers in Steven Spielberg’s movie “1941!”

Kevin Woods was born and raised in Chicago and now resides in Las Vegas. He is a managing consultant in the information technology field and is also a veteran serving in the military and reserves for thirty-four years and holds the rank of lieutenant colonel. Kevin dances socially and competes. Kevin has been a nationally ranked amateur dancer for the past three years and won in the 2006 Global Spectrum National Championship for student couples.
