READING COMPREHENSION
TASK 1:
Read the text below. Some sentences have been removed from the text. Bring them (1 -4)
into their correct positions. Be careful! There are more positions than you need.
The greatest sporting event on earth
FOOTBALL With just days to go before the first match in Russia, we look back at the history of the World Cup.
By Moya Irvine
Today, the World Cup is the greatest sport show on earth, but in 1930, when it began, it was a relatively
small event. FIFA president Jules Rimet, the ‘Father of the World Cup’ played a big role in organising the
first championship and the trophy presented to winning teams until 1970 was named after him. Uruguay
was chosen to host the first championship. In those days it was a football giant, winning gold at the
Olympic Games twice in a row. 1930 was also the centenary of the country’s independence – a good
reason to hold an international event. And it was Uruguay that won the first World Cup. Watched by a
crowd of 93,000 in the stadium in the capital Montevideo the hosts beat Argentina 4-2 in the final. The
1934 World Cup in Italy looked a bit more like today’s competition. Teams had to qualify to become one
of the 16 finalists. [ A ] More fans were able to experience the matches because this time there were radio
broadcasts. France hosted the World Cup in 1938 and then there was a gap during the war years. The
first competition after the war took place in 1950 in Brazil. [ B ] In a match that became known as the
‘Miracle of Bern’, in Germany, the West German team were two goals down, but came back to win 3-2
against Hungary. There have been many other unforgettable moments. [ C ] Germans remember the
same match for the ‘Wembley Tor’. Today, football experts still argue over whether the goal that put
England 3-2 ahead in the 101st minute of the final against Germany really did cross the line. In Mexico in
1986, England had their own problems with a controversial goal. The Argentinian star Diego Maradona
used his hand to put the ball in the net in a quarter-final. The referee didn’t see what had happened and
allowed the goal. Maradona later said he was helped by the ‘Hand of God’. [ D ] Some of the best
remembered moments have been even more shocking. In the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Uruguay’s striker
Luis Suarez was sent off after he bit an Italy defender.
[ E ] He headbutted Italy’s Marco Materazzi and was sent off. Italy won the match 5-3 on penalties. Just
as shocking – but in a good way, was the 2014 semi-final between Germany and Brazil. Fans watched in
amazement as the Germans thrashed Brazil, who were also the hosts, 7-1. [ F ] It was the biggest semi-
final defeat in World Cup history. A lot has changed since the first World Cup. Today, teams from all five
continents take part, and qualifying matches decide the 32 teams that play in the finals. Goal line
technology, introduced in 2014, has made it much easier for the referee to make decisions on goals like
the ‘Wembley Tor’. [ G ] According to FIFA, 3.2 billion viewers watched the 2014 World Cup, and 1 billion
saw the final. The biggest question is always: who is going to win? Germany and Brazil are favourites.
Russia has the advantage of playing at home, but is only ranked 63rd in the world. England usually
expect to do well, but for many years they have disappointed their fans. Manager Gareth Southgate feels
that less is expected this time, but said in a FIFA interview that he is “very excited” about the team. [ H ]
1 The 1954 World Cup in Switzerland had one of the most amazing finals in the
history of the competition.

6 For England fans the best memory is the final at Wembley in 1966, the only time
the national team won the cup.

TASK 2:
B FIFA president Jules Rimet, the ‘Father of the World Cup’ played a big role in organising the first championship and the trophy presented to winning teams until 1970 was named after him. Uruguay was chosen to host the first championship. In those days it was a football giant, winning gold at the Olympic Games twice in a row.
J According to FIFA, 3.2 billion viewers watched the 2014 World Cup, and 1 billion saw the final.
The biggest question is always: who is going to win? Germany and Brazil are favourites. Russia
has the advantage of playing at home, but is only ranked 63rd in the world. England usually
expect to do well, but for many years they have disappointed their fans. Manager Gareth
Southgate feels that less is expected this time, but said in a FIFA interview that he is “very
excited” about the team. “I believe in them and we’re really looking forward to the World Cup.”
E France hosted the World Cup in 1938 and then there was a gap during the war years. The first competition after the war took place in 1950 in Brazil. The 1954 World Cup in Switzerland had one of the most amazing finals in the history of the competition. In a match that became known as the ‘Miracle of Bern’, in Germany, the West German team were two goals down, but came back to win 3-2 against Hungary.
G In Mexico in 1986, England had their own problems with a controversial goal. The Argentinian
star Diego Maradona used his hand to put the ball in the net in a quarter-final. The referee didn’t
see what had happened and allowed the goal. Maradona later said he was helped by the ‘Hand
of God’. Some of the best remembered moments have been even more shocking. In the 2014
World Cup in Brazil, Uruguay’s striker Luis Suarez was sent off after he bit an Italy defender.
A Today, the World Cup is the greatest sport show on earth, but in 1930, when it began, it was a relatively small event. There were no qualifying rounds and only 13 countries took part; big names like Germany, Spain and England were missing from the list.
F There have been many other unforgettable moments. For England fans the best memory is the
final at Wembley in 1966, the only time the national team won the cup. Germans remember the
same match for the ‘Wembley Tor’. Today, football experts still argue over whether the goal that
put England 3-2 ahead in the 101st minute of the final against Germany really did cross the line.
D Teams had to qualify to become one of the 16 finalists. However, there were no groups: it was a
knock-out competition which meant that some powerful teams like Argentina and Brazil only
played one match. More fans were able to experience the matches because this time there were

radio broadcasts.
I A lot has changed since the first World Cup. Today, teams from all five continents take part, and
qualifying matches decide the 32 teams that play in the finals. Goal line technology, introduced
in 2014, has made it much easier for the referee to make decisions on goals like the ‘Wembley
Tor’. And of course, more people can now watch the games thanks to TV.
C 1930 was also the centenary of the country’s independence – a good reason to hold an
international event. And it was Uruguay that won the first World Cup. Watched by a crowd of
93,000 in the stadium in the capital Montevideo the hosts beat Argentina 4-2 in the final. The
1934 World Cup in Italy looked a bit more like today’s competition.
H In the 2006 final in Berlin, it was France’s captain Zinedine Zidane who lost his temper. He
headbutted Italy’s Marco Materazzi and was sent off. Italy won the match 5-3 on penalties. Just
as shocking – but in a good way, was the 2014 semi-final between Germany and Brazil. Fans
watched in amazement as the Germans thrashed Brazil, who were also the hosts, 7-1. It was the
biggest semi-final defeat in World Cup history.
