Budget. Like any family or large organisation, Council must formulate a budget for each financial year. The budget gives council discipline and direction. If you would like a summary of Council’s 2014/15 budget please email me or contact my office.

Eden Station Drive. Eden Station Drive is on track to be open to traffic mid-August. This will link Augusta Parkway to Springfield Greenbank Arterial.

Camira State School. Camira State School was opened in 1974 and will celebrate 40 years this year. When I was primary school age, Camira State School did not exist, so I attended Goodna State School.

My younger brothers were able to attend Camira State School. I look forward to their celebrations. Congratulations to Camira State School on their 40th anniversary.

Lagoon. Swimming in a lagoon will be one of the last things on our minds given the time of year. However, come summer we will all be hoping it is complete. The expected completion date is March-April 2015. The lagoon will be a fantastic asset for Ipswich City.

Mater Health. After many years of negotiations, the current State Health Minister, Lawrence Springborg, made a significant announcement on June 18.

The State Government will partner with Mater Health Services so public patients will be able to be referred to the Mater Hospital at Springfield Central. I congratulate Minister Springborg for this announcement. I believe it is a wise partnership and a smart use of public funds.

In summary, stage one of Mater Hospital at Springfield Central will cost $85 million and the State Government will commit $26 million per year for the next ten years to ensure public patients can be treated. Well done to Mater and Qld Health.

Channel Nine. Channel Nine has expanded into Springfield Central. The official opening of their Springfield Central office is Friday 18th July. A unique partnership with USQ media students will ensure USQ Springfield Central students will have some of the best training opportunities available.

Swisse Color Run. I have been involved in a de-brief of the Color Run held at Springfield Central. When 15 000 people descend on Robelle Domain during normal business hours, there were some logistical issues. Lessons have been learnt.

Despite some issues and local concerns that will be addressed, it was a fantastic event and the crowd were very well behaved.

Springfield Station. I still speak to locals who know about Springfield Central Station but are unaware that a station is also at Springfield. The Springfield station is on Nev Smith Drive with 200 car parks and is close to Camira, Springfield and Springfield Lakes.

Ipswich Cares. Once again the month of September will be the focus of Ipswich Cares. This year a dinner launch will be held at Spring Lake Function Centre on Wednesday 27 August and a 50km walk across Ipswich on 1st September. If you or your business would like to be involved in any way, please contact my office.

Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objects must first be overcome.

PersonallySpeaking

I’ve been thinking recently about prejudice and how it happens. You see, there is just blatant racism or prejudice for no sane reason whatsoever, and then there are prejudices that are based on a past experience that was negative.

Tattoos used to be, and I say ‘used to be’ because it seems every man and his dog has a tattoo these days, the mark of people typically thought of as ‘dangerous’ or ‘tough’. If you’ve had a nasty encounter with someone who is covered in tattoos, chances are you’ll be wary of all people who are heavily tattooed and give them a wide berth. We are incredibly good at ‘tarring all feathers with the same brush’.

What I’m trying to say is that sometimes, our prejudices can seem reasonable and in fact, are often understandable. But does that make them right?

Here’s an example. Recently I spoke at a local club (you know who you are!) about the work of Destiny Rescue. One of the products for sale to help Destiny Rescue fund the work they do, is coffee beans. Many of the clubs and groups I speak to have members at the ‘wise’ end of life, and I have found that most people in this bracket don’t have coffee machines. So even though I have coffee listed as a product on my powerpoint presentation, I don’t usually mention it.

Well, at this particular club I was asked about it and my response (unfortunately!) was that I didn’t talk about it because not many people in ‘this age group’ have at-home coffee machines.

Oops! Seems that about a third of the group I was speaking to, do in fact have coffee machines at home!

Didn’t I feel embarrassed. I had made an assumption - you might even say I was prejudiced! - based on my past experience, that was incorrect.

So if we take that example and apply it to the rest of life, we can perhaps see where some of it is coming from. If a child is bitten by a dog, usually there will be some sort of fear and trepidation around dogs when the child is an adult. And it’s right and wrong at the same time. Yes, dogs can bite, as the child experienced, but it doesn’t mean that all dogs will bite.

And it’s the same with people. Some people are mean, angry and aggressive - and sometimes those people have a different skin colour to us, have tattoos and shaved heads, might not be well educated, or dress well - but that doesn’t mean that all people who have different skin colour, tattoos, shaved heads, minimal education or less money to spend on clothes will be mean, angry and aggressive.

So regardless of our prejudices, we may be able to see the reason behind it, but it’s never okay to stay that way.

Each individual is just that - an individual. Shouldn’t we start treating them individually?

Camira Cub Scout, William Burns, has been presented with the Grey Wolf Award which is the highest award that can be achieved by a Cub Scout.

A gold boomerang badge, participation in four outdoor activities in 12 months, attendance at two pack councils, completion of four level-two achievement badges and a special interest badge and the development of a resource for their fellow members are all prerequisites to receiving the Grey Wolf Award.

COUNSELLING WITH

Kathy BallantynePSYCHOLOGISTCORNER

It is important to remember that your partner is only human...as are you. So, while it’s a great idea to work on improving your relationship, it’s equally important to allow for imperfection. When a problem arises, there are times to address it; and there are times to let it go.

Have you ever walked through your home when it’s pitch black and stumbled over something? Most likely, you would have stepped over that shoe or walked around that box if the lights were on. But they weren’t. The same thing happens for us psychologically; we trip over the things we cannot see. And, what’s worse, we often don’t know how to turn on the light, so we keep tripping. Below are the four main types of relationships - so which do you think you fit into?

Preoccupied Attachment: If you are always worried about what others think of you and don’t really factor in your thoughts and feelings, this style of attachment most likely fits you. People with a preoccupied attachment style feel a powerful need to be close to others, and they show this by clinging. They need a lot of validation and approval. They are concerned that others don’t value them, and they also doubt their own worth in relationships. So, they often worry a lot about their relationships.

Dismissing-Avoidant Style: Although the need for connection is biologically wired in people’s brains, those with this style of attachment deny it. They like to see themselves as independent and self-sufficient; and they minimize the importance of relationships. To keep their relationships unimportant, they suppress or hide their feelings. They also often think of other people less positively than they think of themselves. When faced with rejection, they cope with it by distancing themselves.

Fearful-Avoidant Style: People with this style of attachment tend to think of themselves as flawed, dependent, and helpless. And, they think they aren’t worthy of loving or caring responses from their partners. As a result, they don’t trust that others see them positively, and they expect to get hurt. So, although they want to be close to others, they also fear it. Understandably, they often avoid intimacy and suppress their feelings.

Secure Attachment: If you relate positively to others and yourself, you probably have a secure attachment style. Securely attached people are generally happy in their relationships, feeling that they and others are sensitive and responsive to each other. They sense that connection can provide comfort and relief in times of need. They also feel that they are good, loved, accepted, and competent people.

In thinking about personal connections in this way, you can naturally see how people are often their own worst enemy in developing healthy relationships. Their established ways of viewing themselves and others are like invisible obstacles that trip them up. Although they know that their relationships are less than fulfilling, they fail to see that their attachment style is the problem - which is what prevents them from moving freely toward the close connection they need.

Recognising your style or pattern of relating switches on the light, allowing you to see how you help or hinder your relationships. You can also decide to be different - or at least decide to work on changing your approach and step around that no-longer-invisible obstacle.

Woodcrest welcomes Constable Phil Criss to the school community

A special P-6 Assembly was held recently at Woodcrest State College to welcome Constable Phil Criss, the Adopt-a-Cop for the Junior School.

The Adopt-a-Cop program was implemented in 1985 to build positive relationships between police and members of the school community through the voluntary appointment of Adopt-a-Cops to schools and other relevant organisations.

The program is an integral part of policing and reflects a greater emphasis on police partnerships with the community. Currently there are over 950 Adopt-a-Cops performing duties in over 1100 Queensland schools.

Adopt-a-Cops perform a rapport-building and educational role within the school, with functions including: delivering classroom presentations in partnership with teachers; delivering presentations to parents, carers, teachers and other school staff; attending key school events such as swimming carnivals and/or sports days; addressing school parades; coordinating QPS events and QPS representation at relevant events, e.g. Under 8s Day; attending graduations and/or presentation nights.

Adopt-a-Cops also conduct informal ‘drop in’ visits, particularly during break times, attend meetings, such as Parents and Citizens Meetings and attend school excursions and/or camps.

Goodna/Springfield Probus Club Updateby Pat van der Beek

Welcome to the July column of the Goodna/Springfield Probus Club. As I write this, there is still no real evidence of winter except for a few cool mornings, it seems that climate change is becoming more evident with every change of season. Have you thought how you might be able to make an individual contribution to negate its effects? Careful recycling is a good start.

Our July speaker was Neil Kendall from Tupicoffs who spoke on ‘How to Stop Worrying about Money and Start Living’. Neil offered planning advice and strategies on how to achieve personal financial goals and better enjoy our retirement.

Our speaker for August will be Patrick Pickett CSM, Director/Conductor of the Queensland Pops Orchestra.

The picture above shows some of us enjoying morning tea with ‘Lucy’ and ‘Henry’ on our June excursion to the ‘Destiny’ Donkey Farm at Boonah where we heard about the work being done to look after thirty donkeys, some of which have been rescued from dire circumstances. We travelled by coach on this occasion which gave us all the opportunity to relax and enjoy the view. Following the tour, we enjoyed lunch at a Boonah hotel before heading home after a day with a difference.

July’s outing is again to Boonah, this time for “Christmas in July” at the Boonah Bowls Club. This has proved a popular outing over previous years. The cost of the lunch is $25pp and we will car pool for this outing.

In August, we have booked a tour of the historic ‘Woodlands of Marburg’ for Tuesday 19 August. The cost of the tour and a fruit and sandwich lunch is $20pp. We will car pool for this excursion.

Our monthly pub lunch will be at Springfield Tavern (opposite Coles) on Thursday 17 July.

All members are welcome at all activities and potential members are encouraged to contact Vic on the number below for details. There is no charge for your first meeting and you are under no obligation to join. Your first step is to ring Vic on 3271 1096 or join us at 1.30pm on the first Wednesday of each month at the Camira Friends and Neighbours Clubhouse in Bruce Lane (cnr Langley Road), Camira.

Visitors from Brisbane, The Redlands, Logan and local residents had a fun but also educational afternoon with Gwen Raynor, of Butterfly Wings, as she led them through song, rhyme and storytelling at the first Soroptimist fundraising afternoon tea held at Springfield Tavern. Members also heard from Cesarina Gigante who spoke on various Soroptimist programs. Funds from the afternoon will be donated to the Queensland Cancer Council.

Regional Soroptimist President, Ralda Forzin said, “It was wonderful having so many locals and visitors at our first fundraising venture.”

Local resident Luise Manning, who has written a book, Hold My Hand (on road safety in driveways and car parks), recently launched the book at a breakfast at the Springfield Tavern. Luise was able to obtain a grant for the book through the help of the Soroptimists. Please phone Luise 0407 167 722, if you’re interested in the book.

Soroptimist International would like to invite community minded women to one of their meetings as they embark on starting new clubs in Springfield. The club’s focus will be on education, empowerment and enabling. Soroptimists do this through local and international projects to benefit women and girls and so benefit the whole family. They have social activities and members make new friends from diverse backgrounds and also have fun. Soroptimists can attend conferences and meetings throughout the world. Several Soroptimists at the meeting had just returned from a conference in Kuching, Malaysian Borneo.

Soroptimist International is a women’s service club and dinner meetings will be trialled on the first Monday of the month. Phone Shelley on 0419 546 013 or email Ralda, [email protected] for more information or go to the website www.siswp.org.

With the 2015 financial year on our door step, the team at G J Walsh & Co are preparing themselves for change. Whilst there are limited changes to tax compliance, G J Walsh & Co have now opened the doors at two new exciting office locations - Orion Shopping Centre at Springfield and High Street in Boonah.

For over 20 years, G J Walsh & Co have serviced clients from their central Ipswich location and are now diversifying the way they provide advice by expanding into two growth areas. Services will be more widely accessible than ever before with the dedicated team of professionals remaining committed to being informed of all legislative changes in order to provide the most relevant service and advice for the upcoming tax season.

There are some minor changes individuals should contemplate when preparing their 2014 income tax returns. The Medicare Levy rises to 2% so there will be adjustments to pay packets from 1 July 2014. There will be a sweetener for employees as the superannuation guarantee increases from 9.25% to 9.5%.

For small businesses, the previously available concessions for instant asset write-offs of $6,500 and $5,000 up-front for motor vehicles remain in limbo as the Federal Government continues to push its repeal of the Carbon Tax. Additionally, clients need to ensure the ATO has a current email address as paper Business Activity Statements will no longer be issued to clients who lodge electronically. The ATO will send an email notification only.

Why not visit G J Walsh & Co at their new office in Orion Shopping Centre and let them take the stress out of tax time. Call 3812 3838, visit their website www.gjwalsh.com.au or send an email to [email protected].

Pam Blamey, an art therapist, textile artist and Australian Textile Surface Design Association’s member was the guest speaker at a recent Creative HeART meeting.

Pam explored with the group the concept of creativity and its direct links to health and community strength. Not long after the meeting, a call for presentation at the 6th Annual International Arts and Health Conference in Melbourne caught her attention and she is considering, with the group’s support, her submission to share the Creative HeART’s development and its impact on and within the community with much broader, Australia-wide and international audience.

The group’s development, since its idea conception and the groups’ early formation steps, are great examples of the community movement to address local’s creative needs. It will be a showcase and a story Pam is considering to share at this prestigious international conference.

And it is not an isolated case. Ashley Sang, a QUT student, is also closely following the Creative HeART Greater Springfield’s development with much anticipation and academic rigour, not only to observe the group’s stages of development, part of her creative industry degree, but also with an intention to assist the group on the principles of art and cultural developments in communities.

These are exciting opportunities, an opinion Jolanta Szymczyk and Julie Maddocks, both involved in the project from its early days, share unanimously. External support not only gives the group strength and energy to carry out the vision but also is a sign of growing community involvement.

If you would like to participate in both Pam and Ashley’s initiatives and the Creative HeART’s development and would like to be part of this creative journey, contact Jolanta by sending an email to [email protected] or call 0405 336 240. You can also keep up to date on meeting details by seeing www.facebook.com/GSCreativeHub.

Time is fast running out for poetry enthusiasts to prepare their entries for the 2014 Ipswich Poetry Feast competition. The organising committee would love to receive entries from any aspiring poets in the community.

“We are looking for a strong showing from poetry enthusiasts from throughout Ipswich, Australia and overseas. It does not matter where you live or what style of poetry you write,” Cr Pahlke said.

“If you are interested in writing poetry, we encourage you to take part in this year’s Ipswich Poetry Feast International Writing Competition. You have until 5pm on August 1 to lodge your entry and put yourself in the running for a share in more than $5500 in prize money on offer for the winners of the competition’s different age categories.”

First prize winners in each category will receive a Babies of Walloon Medallion. The overall winner in the Open Age categories will also receive a bronze statuette of the Babies of Walloon. A mentorship worth $1050 and 15 hours of tuition with a Queensland poet will also be awarded to one successful Queensland entrant.

Entry is free to school-aged children (aged five to 17-years-old) while entries for the open age categories cost $5 per entry.

The poetry competition is part of the annual Ipswich Poetry Feast which is co-ordinated by Ipswich City Council and the community.

Over the past 11 years, the competition has gone from strength to strength and has uncovered some wonderfully talented poets, both locally and throughout Australia.

Cr Pahlke said many former entrants participated in the competition without fail each year.

“I’m sure many past entrants of the competition are getting ready to try their luck again and we want to encourage them to do so along with all interested amateur poets throughout Australia.”

Cr Pahlke said the Ipswich Poetry Feast was designed to encourage and reward excellence in poetry writing and council hoped to showcase a wide range of works from throughout Australia.

“This competition offers young and aspiring poets an opportunity to gain experience and skills in the art of poetry writing, showcase their work and talents and have their work published.”

The Ipswich Poetry Feast was established to celebrate the special connection which exists between the City of Ipswich and Australian literary legend Henry Lawson.

Registration forms can be accessed on the Poetry Feast website at www.ipswichpoetryfeast.com.au and entries also can be lodged online. Enquiries can be made by phoning 3810 6758.

Poetry enthusiasts urged to compile 2014 entries

Adopt-a-Road is a wonderful way for volunteers and groups such as the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield to give back to their local environment and help build strong and vibrant communities by removing litter from local roadways and streets.

For too long, local communities have been frustrated by litter on roadsides damaging the environment and detracting from the amenity and utility of public space. By removing litter from roadways, Adopt-a-Road groups such as the Rotary Club of Greater Springfield are sending a clear message to the community that littering is an unacceptable behaviour, not only in their local community but throughout the country.

Volunteers from the local Rotary club recently undertook a coordinated litter cleanup of the Augusta Parkway at Augustine Heights in support of the Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland program.

Keep Australia Beautiful provides each Adopt-a-Road group with resources and materials including safety vests, road safety signs, sharps containers, rubbish bags, safety guidelines and a safety DVD to help group members understand the do’s and don’ts of the Adopt-a-Road program.

After the cleanup, the Rotary club filled out a short report to provide feedback to Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland in order to provide a record of the litter collected to aid ongoing support.

The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield hopes to mobilize its volunteers to undertake regular litter cleanups to ensure the club’s adopted section of road is maintained in a litter free state. After three months, permanent signage is proposed to be installed on the adopted section of road to publicly recognise the Adopt-a-Road group’s efforts in Springfield community.

Meanwhile, while members of the club were cleaning roadsides, other members were conducting a sausage sizzle at the Brookwater Shopping Centre with proceeds donated to assist with the medical expenses for local 21 month old Giuliana de Petro who is suffering an eating disorder which is baffling the experts. This initial assistance will go a long way in helping the de Petro family in their quest to raise a total of $20,000 for Giuliana’s rehabilitation program.

The Rotary Club of Greater Springfield holds its meetings every Thursday evening at 6.30pm at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club, 1 Tournament Drive Brookwater. For enquiries, please contact the Club Secretary, Lachlan Clarke on 0409 711 199, visit them on Facebook or email: [email protected].

Camira Friends and Neighbours update

At the meeting on 4 June, our guest speaker was The Red Hat Ladies which is a group that was formed April 1998. They are famous for their red hats and purple outfits and are a fun and friendship group. It was very interesting to listen to them and all enjoyed a lovely morning with morning tea.

Trivia Day was on 11 June, so we needed our thinking caps on.

Our bus trip to the Robotic Dairy Farm at Beaudesert on 18 June was very interesting. We watched the cows being milked by robots and ended the day with lunch at the Beaudesert Golf Club.

Soup Day on 25 June went down really well on such a cold morning. Some of the ladies from the club made a variety of soups, which were enjoyed by everyone.

We have a bus trip in August to Rockhampton and Frazer Island, leaving on 11th August and returning 19th August. If you’re interested in a holiday with friendly people, you will be made most welcome.

Please ring Val for more information on 3288 2689.

A common reason for cat owners to contact a vet is when they have seen blood in the cat’s litter tray or have seen their cat going to the tray more frequently than normal or straining to go to the toilet. A common cause of these signs is the syndrome known as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), sometimes referred to as cystitis.

FLUTD or cystitis can have numerous causes. Viral or bacterial infections are sometimes involved, but not nearly as frequently as in dogs and people.

Formation of crystals in the urine often plays a role and certain diets are more likely to contribute to this. Stress plays a role in some cats. Sometimes the cause is unknown and this is referred to as idiopathic cystitis.

Cystitis is a distressing, painful condition. Even when the bladder is empty, the cat will feel the need to urinate and will strain, producing only small drops or no urine at all. The inflammation leads to spasm of the muscles of the bladder and urethra, making the problem worse. In male cats, the urethra can be obstructed by a plug of crystals and mucus so the cat cannot pass urine. This is a life-threatening emergency, which requires immediate veterinary attention.

The treatment for cystitis depends on the cause, and it is necessary to examine urine sample to determine what the cause is. It can sometimes be difficult to get urine samples from cats and your vet may recommend hospitalisation for a short period to achieve this.

Male cats with obstructions need to be anaesthetized to have the obstruction relieved, and a urinary catheter may be left in place for a short time.

Medications to relieve spasm, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics may also be used. If the cystitis is related to crystal formation, special diets will help to control it. In cases of idiopathic cystitis, drugs that protect the bladder lining may be used. Long term management is needed in many cats that suffer from cystitis.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict which cats will be affected. Cats that are overweight seem to be predisposed; also cats that only eat supermarket brand biscuits often develop urinary problems.

As a general rule, always ensure your cat has easy access to drinking water, try to feed the premium brand cat foods available at vet clinics, and if you see any signs indicating cystitis, consult your veterinarian promptly.

In their June 21-22 edition, The Weekend Australian published the Nation’s Top Schools by State. It was extremely pleasing to see The Springfield Anglican College rank 49 across all schools in Queensland based on the 2013 Years Three, Five, Seven and Nine NAPLAN results.

It is well accepted that NAPLAN results do need to be taken in context. That is, NAPLAN results provide one view of the level of student performance at one point in time. To gain a genuine view of student progress and levels of achievement, schools use a range of different indicators. That said, NAPLAN results do provide schools with a valuable point of comparison to other schools both within the State and across Australia.

The Springfield Anglican College is a non-academically selective school that delivers a holistic approach to education. The College, however, does have a strong academic focus with approximately seventy per cent of each Year Twelve cohort seeking university pathways. Results such as this highlight the quality of teaching and learning across the College. This is further reinforced by the 2013 OP results in which twenty nine percent of students received an OP in the OP 1-5 band, with sixty three percent in the OP 1-10 band.

As noted in the table published in The Weekend Australian, the College has one of the lowest Index of Community Socio-

Economic Advantage (ICSEA ) scores. The ICSEA is a measure of socio-economic status, including family education and income, developed from the My School website. In basic terms, schools with a lower ICSEA score have a parent body with a lower level of income than that of high ICSEA schools.

Most of the schools ranked in the top 50 schools in Queensland have much higher ICSEA scores than that of the College and also have much higher fee levels, in many cases more than double that of a TSAC education.

At the College, every endeavour is made to keep fee levels down. Over the past four years, fee increases have been contained to between three and five percent each year, with the College Council clear in its intent to keep future fee increases in line with this trend.

Independent school fees increased across the sector, however they moved at a much higher rate during the same time period, generally between seven and eight percent per annum, with many of the older independent schools in Queensland now charging in excess of $20,000 per annum for Senior Schooling. In the southern States, this level moves to in excess of $30,000.

Now in our sixteenth year, the College is well established and, we believe, is offering our students not only a well balanced education but also a high quality education and at an extremely competitive fee level by independent school standards.

The Preps at Staines Memorial College were excited to receive a visit last term from a Queensland Fire truck. Friendly firemen, dressed in their safety fire clothes spoke to the children about fire safety and what to do in the event of a fire at home. The children were shown how to call the fire service and to keep everyone safe until the fire truck arrived.

The 40 preps and their teachers joined in with the firemen by crawling across the classroom floors pretending there was a fire they were escaping. The fire truck sirens and lights were on and flashing and they quickly unrolled the fire hose to put out the pretend fire. The firemen generously let every student pull the hose trigger to squirt the water. The students enjoyed the water so much, they were almost swimming in it.

National Seniors holds branch meetings each month with guest speakers or activities of interest. However, on another level NSA lobbies on behalf of its members aged 50 onwards.

Last month there was a need to harness this energy to advocate on behalf of the membership, indeed all seniors. I refer to the recent issues relating to cuts to concessions for Concession card and Seniors card holders which had a successful outcome.

On the subject of fun, last month, branch members were entertained by Joel Archer with an old time film “How green was my valley”. It was hard to believe just how tough it must have been to live in that age.

Christmas in July will be celebrated ‘at home’ this year with a delicious lunch served by our favourite caterer, Con, and entertainment by Jay and Doll. Bookings for this event have closed. The Wanderers next excursion on the 8th August is a train trip to Rosewood with lunch in the pub.

A date claimer for Seniors Week: the club will be hosting a high tea event on Tuesday 19th August. Entertainment will be provided by the Apollo Choir. There will not be a branch meeting before hand. Bookings can be made at the next branch meeting in July.

The Goodna/ Redbank National Seniors meet at the Goodna Leagues Club Brisbane Terrace, Goodna on the third Tuesday of each month commencing at 9.30am for a 10.00am start. For further information please phone Val Randle on 3297 5735.

Ipswich City Council handed down its 2014-2015 Budget on June 26, my 11th as Mayor and it is always a difficult task to balance the needs of such a diverse community.

This year’s budget is a budget that invests in infrastructure and improves services, while also building and planning for future growth.

One of those investments is Robelle Domain stage two which will include the Robelle Lagoon swimming pool in Springfield Central.

The new lagoon will be completed this financial year, so no need to travel to Southbank anymore.

The $10.3 million project is jointly funded with the Australian Government and once completed, will provide another world-class outdoor recreation facility for residents and visitors to enjoy.

It is tremendous to see how far our city has come in 10 years. In 2004, there was no Robelle Domain, Orion Town Centre and the Springfield region was nowhere near the size it is today.

There are so many things we have achieved and many more yet to come. Today our city is respected by people both nationally and internationally and we are proud to promote our city and call it home.

Then and now...a look back at Greater Springfield

Springfield Councillor David Morrison reflects back to when Discovery Lake at Springfield Lakes was being constructed in 2006. The Delfin (now Lend Lease) Project Manager was Marc Wilkinson, the State Minister for DNR and Member for Inala was Hon Henry Palaszczuk.

Cr David Morrison said he remembers very clearly the first lake called Spring Lake being created and when it filled. He was excited to be involved in the planning and witness the design and construction of Regatta Lake. Regatta Lake sits just above Discovery Lake and is approximately 9ha in size.

Springfield Lakes is a fantastic place to live with three lakes totalling 25ha of water.
