The Greater Philadelphia Locksmiths Association’s 67th Anniversary Convention will be held September 28 through October 1, 2016, at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Philadelphia Airport hotel in Philadelphia, PA. Highlights include: Nine cutting-edge, hands-on Training Classes, most taught by nationally recognized instructors. Two of the classes are NJ State Certified CEU classes to help you acquire or maintain your NJ State Locksmith license. From basic locksmithing skills classes, journeyman level classes, and more advanced classes in safes and automotive, we’re sure you will find something that will interest you. Friday “Country Western Night” Social. Git along little doggies! Dust off your best cowboy hat and kick the mud off of your cowboy boots! Renew industry friendships and start some new ones while you enjoy BBQ and fixin’s, and assorted drinks (won’t be no sarsaparilla!). We’ll be conducting some rodeo-themed games (with prizes) and everyone is encouraged to join us on the dance floor for some Boot Scootin’! Costumes optional, but there will be prizes for best dressed Cowpoke and Texas Rose! The Professional Products Exhibit. The product exhibit features both manufacturers and distributors. Don't miss this opportunity to view new products or strike a bargain with your favorite distributor. You’ll want to brush up on your technique for the Lock Picking and Lock Bumping Contests. Cameras of the 21st Century Please note: This class will be held at GPLA Headquarters. Please see the map on page 22 for directions and alternate overnight accommodation suggestions. Instructor: William B. Neff, CPP, PSP, CML One of the fastest growing segments of the physical security industry is security camera systems. In this class the students will learn about the new technologies that have revolutionized this industry. Each student will receive and take home with them a 3 mega-pixel cube camera with 64 GB storage card. Students must bring a laptop with Ethernet port with them for the hands-on training. Students will configure this camera for LAN with POE & WiFi and learn how to monitor from web browser and smart phones. Students will learn to schedule alarms using video motion, PIR, sound or dry contact and send alarms to email or text. The course will also cover remote playback, archiving video incidents, video management systems, NVRs, Hybrid DVRs plus much more. Upon completion of the course the student will have advanced knowledge of today's security camera systems. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be presented to each student. Note: There is a lab fee of $130 for materials which includes a 3 mega-pixel camera, 64 GB SDC Card and LAN cabling. 8:00 AM to Noon Auto Transponder Chip Harvesting & Re-shelling

Instructor: Sven K. Hellwig, Sr., CRL Go green, re-use, re-cycle, re-new! This ½ day class is designed to give the student the basic understanding of transponder chip identification and location in order to harvest and re-use chips in new shells to produce a new low cost key, ready to be cut and programmed. Students will learn which keys are locked and not worth harvesting and which can be easily harvested to save them money. Topics to be covered include: how to shell keys to replace customers worn keys, harvesting chips to save time and programing, how and where to get the keys to harvest, and how to market their new skill. Other subjects related to automotive work will be discussed and any question that the student has pertaining to the auto industry is encouraged. Beginners and journeyman will walk away from this class with a vast understanding of auto chips. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be presented to each student.

About the instructor:

Sven K. Hellwig Sr., CRL has been in the locksmithing industry for 31 years. He has owned and operated, SKH Locksmiths Shop & Mobile Service out of Hatboro, PA since 1981. Sven has been a member of the GPLA since 1989 and is a recipient of the prestigious Herman C. Henssler, Jr. Award. He has served as President, Chairman of the Board, Sergeant at Arms, Corresponding Secretary, Convention Chairman and Holiday Party Chairman and currently serves on the Board of Directors.

1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Lishi Automotive Lock Picks

Instructor: Paul Kline, RL In this ½ day class, each student will be instructed on the different Lishi pick tools currently available and the proper use to pick and decode various automotive locks from Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda and others. Once the student decodes the lock there will be code cutting machines available to cut the key for the lock. This is a great hands-on experience for beginners, intermediate and seasoned professionals. Discount coupons for the Lishi tool will be made available to purchase from vendors at the product exhibit on Saturday. In addition, several Lishi picks will be given away during class. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be presented to each student.

About the instructor:

Paul J. Kline, RL, is a second generation locksmith, having started in a family business with his father in 1975. He is currently a member of AOLA and GPLA, and has served GPLA as Recording Secretary, Sergeant-at-Arms, Corresponding Secretary and is currently serving as GPLA Vice President. Paul is the owner of Lightning Locksmith, a full service lock shop specializing in Automotive Locksmithing along with commercial and residential service. Instructors: John Truempy, ICML, CRL, CMIL, IFDI Vernon Kelley, ICML, CFDI, CPL, CMIL, IFDI Stop giving away work to door companies! This class will cover multiple brands and styles of exit devices. Installation, servicing and troubleshooting techniques will be covered in depth. The pros and cons of rim, mortise, surface and concealed rod installations will be discussed. Related life safety code issues will also be covered. While the class will contain some hands-on servicing, students should be prepared to take copious notes. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to all students. Instructor: Joe Reustle, CPS, CAI, GSAT:I This hands-on class is suitable for all safe technicians who wish to be able to service common key locks found on many safes. Upon completion of this class students will be familiar with the proper ways to operate, change keys and reset the Lagard 2200 series locks, S&G 6804 Key - OP locks and the S&G/FAS 6800 series locks. This class will consist of both a slide show and hands on. We will disassemble all locks and cover common issues seen in the field. We will also discuss defeat methods briefly but there will be no locks defeated in class. Instructor: Patrick Mulloy This class is designed for the student who wants to enter into the lucrative automotive remote sales and service market, as well as those students already selling automotive remotes. This class will demonstrate the different ways to be versatile with a variety of automotive remotes and parts. The class will focus on Ford, General Motors, Mopar (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram), Toyota/ Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti and Honda. Topics covered will also include the reuse of remotes, keeping track of your inventory, cleaning remotes, compatibility and replenishing. The product knowledge gained in this class will allow you to fully utilize your remotes and parts inventory. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to each student. About the instructor: Patrick Mulloy became interested in Automotive Locksmithing a few years back. He joined an automotive remote supply company, where he started from the ground up sorting remotes, keys and chips. Patrick spent countless hours separating the thousands of remotes received each day and preparing them for refurbishing. During this time he began to learn what parts could be superseded by other parts, which electronic components locked and needed to be reset, and compatibility between makes and models. Mr. Mulloy enjoys working with automotive locksmiths across the country through his affiliation with Locksmith Resource and is excited to share his extensive knowledge of remotes here at GPLA.

8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Access Control

Instructor: Russ Anderson This composite class consists of 3 NJ State Certified CEU classes: Electric Strike Installation COURSE LENGTH: Two (2.0) hours. Students will be shown the easiest techniques for cutting and installing an electric strike into a hollow metal door frame. Cutting tool selection and use of the HES metal template kit is demonstrated. Students will be allowed to individually measure and cut in a strike. Among the topics covered will be: codes and standards, fire rated versus non-fire rated openings, electric strike application and selection, frame and door types, fail safe to fail secure conversion of HES strikes, 12 to 24 volt strike conversion, solenoid testing and troubleshooting and installation techniques. Advanced Technical Product Troubleshooting COURSE LENGTH: Two (2.0) hours. This course is designed for participants with previous basic electronic knowledge and use of a multi-meter. Covered in this course are complete product and system troubleshooting, including eight “Hands-On” troubleshooting stations covering the following subjects: power supplies, magnetic locks and electric strikes, touch sense bars, digital keypads, motorized exit devices, access control systems and additional troubleshooting exercises. Advanced Electronic System Wiring and Basic Troubleshooting COURSE LENGTH: Four (4.0) hours. This course is designed for participants with previous basic electronic knowledge and use of a multi meter. Covered in this course are advanced access control and system wiring techniques, installation and product troubleshooting. The class includes instructional and hands-on exercises covering the following subjects: creating wiring diagrams, fire alarm interface, fail safe lock system wiring, fail secure lock system wiring, basic system troubleshooting-using multi-meter, wiring troubleshooting - what you should test, DK-26 and power supply troubleshooting, magnetic lock and electric strike troubleshooting, touch sense bar troubleshooting, digital keypad troubleshooting and basic access control systems troubleshooting A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to each student. Students who check the appropriate box on the registration form and include the additional $20.00 will receive three certificates totaling 8 CEUs for their 2019 NJ State Locksmith License renewal. Students must bring their NJ State License to class to receive their CEUs. Instructor: Joseph R. Reustle CPS, CAI, GSAT:I Stop turning down lucrative safe servicing jobs! Through a combination of hands-on training and lecture, students will learn mechanical and electronic safe lock combination changing and servicing. If time permits, the class will also cover diagnosing and repairing bolt work problems, hinge adjustments and more. These skills and techniques will allow the student to keep their customer’s safes operating properly and provide additional revenue generating opportunities. Eye protection is a must and students should bring end or diagonal cutters, vice grips, assorted Phillips and slotted screwdrivers, hammer, center punch, pencil and paper.

Instructor: Jim Hetchler This course will focus on automotive transponder systems, including theory of operation and programming. Students will learn how to identify and service transponder systems and their respective components. Students will also become acquainted with the interaction of keys, systems and programming tools. An introduction to EEPROM will also be presented. Students wishing to more fully participate will bring their standard tool kit of commonly used bench tools, their laptop computer, their vehicle programmers such as a Zedbull, T-Code, MVP, TKO etc. Each programmer should be accompanied by their respective guide books and manuals. About the instructor: Jim Hetchler worked for over 20 years in the law enforcement, EMS and repossession industry before becoming a locksmith in 1995. He has served on the NASTF Vehicle Security Committee for over 14 years and taught throughout the USA for different associations and distributors linked to locksmiths. Jim established the Key Pro® Website in 2005, dedicated to the automotive industry. To date there are 1500 members with almost 320,000 posts and over 170 training videos available. He enjoys sharing the 18 Gigabytes of videos, articles and data he has gathered in the last 20 years with those members. Jim is President of the Just Cars Auto Expo LLC. which each year puts on a show that gathers over 800 locksmiths and industry leaders together to share and learn the latest techniques in the industry.
