The Great Plains Cultural Region extends through 10 states andthree countries. It is the largest cultural region in the U.S.

It was home to several different nations; Blackfoot, Arapaho, Crow,Cheyenne, Kiowa, Sioux and others, each with unique languages.

Wildlife Beliefs

- Each nation was divided into tribes overseen by chiefs or Sachems.-Leadership was passed hereditarily.

- Children were raised communally, and the tribe functioned like anextended family.

- Buffalo (American Bison) were an important resource. - All parts were used and the animal itself was worshipped.

- Horses were introduced in the 1700’s by Europeans- Became valuable for hunting, trade, transportation and defense.
