PAYMENTS FROM OUTSIDE THE U.S.

The policy for payments from countries other than the U.S. has been changed. All payments for membership, books, or other purposes must now be in U.S. dollars, and must be by check drawn on a U.S. bank, or by postal money order or International money order (also called U.S. Dollar World Money Order, and available from banks in each country).

The reason for this is that U.S. banks have all begun making large charges for processing foreign checks. Sometimes the charge is greater than the value of the check.

article on this subject, pp. 123-124, 1993 GFNL.) Years ago we had a deacons’ retreat at Graves Mountain Lodge (in Syria, VA) -- the food is excellent.

But why not find a place close to the heart of Capt. Thomas Graves? The Jamestown area is fascinating, and stays warm throughout most of the year. The library at Williamsburg is very cooperative for genealogical research, and of course archeological wonders like Carter’s Grove are interesting to visit, as part of the Williamsburg tour. And the Eastern Shore of Virginia, which plays a part in the life of Capt. Thomas Graves, is nearby.

For the children, there are Busch Gardens and Virginia Beach, and for the wives, there are the great plantation homes along the James River. I’d like to see Bacon’s Castle, Smith’s Fort, and Yorktown.”

What do the rest of you think? Please let me know.

CORRECTIONS TO ATTENDENCE AT NEW ENGLAND GRAVES REUNION IN

MANSFIELD, MA

Somehow a line or two was accidentally omitted in the article on page 49 in the June issue. As a result, the paragraph starting with Deacon George Graves was wrong.

Attendees descended from Deacon George Graves of Hartford, CT were: Dr. and Mrs. John W. Graves (Helen), Chatham, MA.

The other people in that paragraph are descended from John Graves of Concord, MA: Mr. Karl E. Graves and son Matthew Graves, Andover, NY; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth W. Graves (Kay), Sanibel, FL and New Milford, PA; Mr. Dean L. Graves, Milton, MA; Mr. and Mrs. Phillip L. Graves, Sr. (Marian) and grandson Frank P. Graves, Gifford, PA.

GRAVES FAMILY BOOKS

Graves Families of the World was published in March and mailed to all those who had ordered it. It is still available to anyone who wants a copy at $41 postpaid.

The other three books are being completed as quickly as possible.

Expected for 1995 are John Graves of Concord, MA and John Graves of Frederick Co., VA.

Targeted for 1996 is the book on Capt. Thomas Graves of VA.

It should be remembered that these expected and targeted publication dates are not firm commitments, but are only targets. They indicate the order in which the books will be published. Because of the huge amount of effort involved in publication, dates can easily slip.

TRIP TO ENGLAND IN MAY 1995

This trip will be May 20 through June 1, 1995. The planning is proceeding on schedule. By the time you receive this issue of the newsletter you will probably have already received the mailing with details of the tour. If you want more information and have not received it, contact Kenneth V. Graves, 261 South St., Wrentham, MA 02093, (508)384-8084.

We will be departing the U.S. Saturday evening, May 20, and arriving at London’s Heathrow Airport on Sunday morning, May 21. On Sunday we will visit Oxford, the “City of Spires”, then on to our hotel in Stratford-on-Avon, Warwick. We will be headquartered in Stratford for 3 days, visiting Shakespeare attractions, the lovely traditional villages of the Cotswolds, and the Graves ancestral home of Mickleton Manor, Gloucestershire.

We will then travel to southern Yorkshire and vicinity for a 3-day stay. Dr. George Redmonds, a Yorkshire native and expert on Yorkshire surnames, will host the tour much of the time in Yorkshire. Highlights will include many quaint towns connected with the Graves

family, the area associated with the novels of Charlotte Bronte, and the Jorvik Viking Centre in York.

Saturday and Sunday will see us in Bakewell, Derbyshire. The highlight of this part of the tour will be the visit to Beeley Hilltop where the Graves family lived as early as the reign of Henry III (1216-1272). The townspeople will host us at a church service and dinner at Beeley Church and the Village Hall.

On Monday and Tuesday we will visit Horbling, southern Lincolnshire, where a Graves family member was recorded in the Doomsday Book as living about 1086. We will visit nearby Kirton (where many Graves families still live) and the cathedral city of Peterborough, and then on to London for a tour or free time.

On Wednesday we will tour Gravesend, Kent (possible home of several Graves ancestors), visiting the burial site and statue of Pocahantas, and then back to London for a free afternoon. Departure from Heathrow will be Thursday, June 1, after breakfast.

FUTURE HOME FOR THE GRAVES FAMILY ASSOCIATION

Bay from Orleans to Chatham, MA, to hold the genealogical records of the Nickerson Family Association.

This is the sort of thing that it would be marvelous to have for the Graves Family Association. One option for preserving records is to eventually deposit them in a library such as the New England Historic Genealogical Society library in Boston. However, having a headquarters and library of our own has several advantages. It would help provide for continuity of the Association, and it would more easily allow collection of and

access to other family memorabilia such as photographs and various family items of historical importance. It could also serve as an office for the Association, and provide a place for members to come and do research.

One step that is needed before considering a permanent home is to incorporate the Association as a non-profit organization.

All comments, suggestions, and offers of help on this subject will be appreciated.

CAPT. THOMAS GRAVES OF VA AND THE SETTLEMENT OF JAMESTOWN,

VA

King James I of England, on April 10, 1606, granted letters patent (charter) to Sir Thomas

Gates, Sir George Somers, Richard Hakluyt, Edward-Maria Winfield, Thomas Hanham, Raleigh Gilbert, William Parker, and George Popham, in whose names the petition for the charter to the Virginia Company of London

Page 6: THE GRAVES FAMILY NEWSLETTER · THE GRAVES FAMILY NEWSLETTER ... purposes must now be in U.S. dollars, and must be by check drawn on a U.S. bank, ... Sept. 25, 1994, Blue Licks State

had been made, for the founding of two colonies in Virginia.

In 1606 the name Virginia designated the North American coast north of Spanish Florida. The First Colony was to “begin their plantation and place of their first sojourning and dwelling in any place along the aforesaid coast of Virginia or America where they thought it suitable and convenient, between the aforesaid thirty-four and forty-one degrees of the aforesaid latitude.” The Second Colony was to locate at some point between thirty-eight and forty-five degrees of northern latitude.

The First Colony (consisting of knights, gentlemen, merchants and others of the city of London) made a settlement at Jamestown on May 13, 1607, which became permanent. The Plymouth grantees (from the English cities of Bristol and Exeter, the town of Plymouth, and other places) established the second colony at Sagadagic (on the coast of what became Maine) in August 1607, but abandoned it in the spring of 1608.

Jamestown was the first permanent English-speaking colony in America. The voyage to

Virginia under the command of Capt. Christopher Newport took over four months, and followed the route shown in the preceding drawing. The colonists left London on Dec. 19-20, 1606 in 3 small ships, Discovery, Susan Constant, and Good Speed (painting shown below).

They arrived in the West Indies March 23,

and left there for Virginia on April 9. They made their first landing at Cape Henry, VA, on April 26, 1607. After exploring and visiting Indian villages along the James River (as

shown on the map on the next page), they selected an island in the river for their settlement on May 13, 1607, and took their provisions ashore there on May 14. The 104 or 105 men completed the fort in 30 days, naming it James Fort for King James the First.

The settlers had many difficulties. Adding to their problems was discord among them-selves, and leaders who were sometimes less than competent. During the summer and autumn of 1607, two-thirds of

the

settlers died from disease, famine, and other causes. During the winter of 1609-10, known as the “Starving Time”, almost 90% of the colonists died. Out of 500 people, only about 60 were alive at winter’s end. Conflict with Indians was also a serious problem. On March 22, 1622, 347 people were killed in the outlying settlements. In April 1644, approximately 400 colonists were killed in a 2-day attack. By 1699, however, the Indians of Tidewater Virginia had all but disappeared from the area below the falls of the Potomac, Rappahannock, and James Rivers.

Capt. Newport returned to Jamestown on Jan. 8, 1608 with the first supply in the John and Francis. The Phoenix, commanded by Capt. Francis Nelson, which had sailed as part of the first supply, finally arrived on April 20, 1608.

Thomas Graves, gentleman, arrived in Virginia in Oct. 1608, coming from England in the ship Mary and Margaret with Capt. Christopher Newport’s second supply. Thomas Graves was one of the original Adventurers (stockholders) of the Virginia Company of London. He was also the first known person named Graves in North America.

In May 1610 Sir Thomas Gates (the newly appointed Governor) arrived at Jamestown, after having been delayed a year in Bermuda when his ship was wrecked. Arriving in the two smaller ships he had built in Bermuda, he found the fort in ruins and the people desperate. Deciding that the only chance for survival was to return to England, they had started down the river when they learned of the arrival of Lord Delaware and his fleet with 150 new settlers and ample supplies. Gates then turned his ships about and returned to Jamestown. They called it “The Day of Providence”.

Capt. Thomas Graves was a member of the First Legislative Assembly in America, and, with Mr. Walter Shelley, sat for Smythe’s Hundred when they met at Jamestown on July 30, 1619.Thomas Graves moved to the Eastern Shore between Aug. 1619 and Feb. 16, 1623

(when he was included on a list as living on the Eastern Shore). His patent for 200 acres on the Eastern Shore is of record 14 March 1628. This land was in what was then known as Accomack, now a part of Northampton Co.

In the census of February 1625, Capt. Thomas Graves was one of only 51 people then living on the Eastern Shore. He was put in charge of the direction of local affairs later in 1625. In Sept. 1632 he, with others, was appointed a Commissioner "for the Plantacon of Acchawmacke". He was one of the Burgesses to the Assembly, representing Accomac, for the 1629-30 session and the 1632 session. He attended many of the meetings of the Commissioners, but he was absent from Dec. 30, 1632/3 until Oct. 23, 1633/4. It appears that he was out of the country.

The old Hungars Episcopal Church is located about seven miles north of Eastville, on the north side of Hungars Creek. Hungars Parish was made soon after the county was established, and the first minister was Rev. Francis Bolton, who was succeeded by Rev. William Cotton. The first vestry was appointed in 1635. The first vestry meeting was on Sept. 29, 1635, at which Capt. Thomas Graves headed the list of those present. The first church edifice was erected in 1690-95 and was still standing around 1900, one of the oldest churches in the country.

Captain Thomas Graves died between November 1635 when he was witness to a deed and 5 Jan. 1636 when suit was entered against a servant to Mrs. Graves (Adventurers of Purse and Person, pp. 188-189). His birth date is not known, but is believed to be about 1580. That would have made him only about 55 years of age at his death.

Since Captain Thomas Graves had been active in the affairs of Virginia from his arrival, the absence of any mention of him during certain periods indicate he had returned to England. This is also confirmed by patents issued to him and to others in which he is mentioned. Mrs. Hiden stated: "Even a cursory reading of Northampton (formerly Accomack)

Page 9: THE GRAVES FAMILY NEWSLETTER · THE GRAVES FAMILY NEWSLETTER ... purposes must now be in U.S. dollars, and must be by check drawn on a U.S. bank, ... Sept. 25, 1994, Blue Licks State

--8811--

records reveals how frequent were the trips to England, Ireland, Holland, and New England" of those living on the Eastern Shore. Mrs. Hiden also stated: "We know from the land patents that Capt. Thomas Graves made several trips out of the country, to England presumably, and on one of his return voyages his family accompanied him."

Thomas Graves was probably unmarried when he arrived in Virginia in 1608. He was young, and adventure was probably the reason for his coming to Virginia. He was obviously educated, of some "social status" and financial means, and a leader.

It is likely that he returned to England, possibly in Oct. 1609, either on the same ship with Captain John Smith (who left Virginia for England for treatment of his wounds resulting from an explosion), or on one of the other seven ships which arrived in Virginia in August 1609. In that way he would have missed the "Starving Time" of the winter of 1609-10, which so few survived.

He may have then married in England in about 1610, fathered John Graves and Thomas Graves, remained in England for several years, and returned to Virginia prior to the formation of Smythe's Hundred in 1617, or possibly a little later. It is known that he was "entreated to take charge of the people and workes" at Smythe's Hundred in April 1619, and was there then.

Also, there is no record of his being in Virginia after the meeting of the Burgesses in July-August of 1619 until he is shown as living on the Eastern Shore in 1623. It seems reasonable that he was in England at the time of the Indian Massacre of March 1622, and upon returning to Virginia settled on the Eastern Shore where it was less perilous to live. The fact that he fathered three children, the girls, during this period certainly lends support to his being in England.

CLUES TO THE ANCESTRY OF CAPT. THOMAS GRAVES OF VA

Part of our projest for locating the origins of immigrant Graves ancestors is to search for the origins of those people who were closely associated with them. The Croshaw (and variant spellings) family is certainly one of those very closely associated with Capt. Thomas Graves of VA. The surname of Thomas’s wife, Katherine, has long been rumored to be Croshaw, and later generations of Croshaws and Graves intermarried.

Mrs. Kay Lee W. Gunn, 4327 Westside Dr., Dallas, TX 75209, descended from Capt. THOMAS GRAVES of VA, has provided some clues to the possible early connection in England. She wrote: “My guess: Rev. Wm. Crashaw, B.D. (Yorkshire) could be the key in examining the Crashaw/Croshaws of Yorkshire & Lancashire (together), also the Derbyshire line related to Rev. Wm. Crashaw.”

Excerpting from the will of William Crashawe, PCC 97 Hale, 1 Nov. 1621, proved 6 Oct. 1626, as published in Virginia Settlers and English Adventurers, by Currer-Briggs: “William Crashaw, Bachelor in Divinity, Preacher of God’s word first at Bridlington, then at Beverley in Yorkshire, afterwards at the Temple, since than Pastor of the Church of Agnes Burton in the Diocese of York, now paster of that too great parish of Whitechapel in the suburbs of London... (indicates he is married, and then bequeaths books to many libraries in Cambridge, London, Ireland, and Yorkshire, etc.)... To the parish church of Hausworth in Yorkshire where I was born... To my brother Thomas all my civil law books he hath not and 20/ - to bestow on a fair Bible for my sister his wife.” The will goes on to list other relatives, and also mentions Sir Edwyn Sandys and others involved with the Virginia Company of London.

It is possible that the brother referred to above may actually be a brother-in-law, Thomas Graves, married to William’s sister, Katherine Crashaw. An exciting possibility!

JOHN GRAVES OF ROXBURY, MA A NEW POSSIBILITY FOR IMMIGRANT

ANCESTRY

Although the information about immigrant John Graves of Roxbury, MA has been known and published for many years, he and his descendants do not seem to have been written up by John Card Graves or any of the other compilers of genealogies, and I know of no one who claims ancestry from him. That is especially strange, since his home in England is known.

At first I thought he might be the same as John Graves of Concord, MA, but that is obviously not the case, since John of Roxbury died in 1644, and his children were all born before those of John of Concord.

More research will be done to discover who he is and whether he is connected with other immigrants or with some of the known American Graves families.

The Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants to New England, 1620-1650 by Charles Edward Banks, Baltimore, 1957, lists John Graves from Nazing and Harlow, Essex, England, emigrating to Roxbury, MA.

Savage (pp. 294-295) states: John Graves of Roxbury came in May 1633 with wife, who died soon after, and 5 children: John, Samuel, Jonathan, Sarah, and Mary, according to the church record. The William and Jane came in that month but, as Winthrop says, she brought only 30 passengers. I think these came, perhaps that month in the other ship, Mary and Jane, which had 196. In Dec. 1635 he married Judith Alward, or Allard, had Hannah, born 8 Sept. 1636; was freeman 18 April 1637, and died 4 Nov. 1644. Elliot calls him “godly brother” and after mention, next to him, of funeral of “Thomas Ruggles, a godly brother” adds: “these two broke the knot first of the Nazing Christians. I mean they first died of all those Christians that came from that town in England.” As he, also, came from that little town, we know how he must have felt their

loss. Fourth after death of the son we read in the record Jan. “about 24 day, old mother Graves died. She was about 80 years of age.” In his will, of 1 Nov. 1644, he provides for his mother, his wife, and all the children. Executrix Sarah, who was probably dead; but on 26 Nov. of the next year his son John made his will, and gives to all his brothers and sisters, yet more to Sarah than the other two, and to his father’s widow. On 5 Dec. 1645, the writer adds to his sad list: “John Graves, a godly young man, eldest son of him who died the year before.” The widow Judith married 2 June 1646, William Potter, survived him and married 13 Dec. 1654, Samuel Finch; and Hannah married 24 May 1654, John Mayo.

According to Thomas Lechford’s Notebook, 1885, pp. 38-39: “To all to whome these presents shall come greeting, Knowe yee that I John Graves1 of Roxbury in New England, Cowleech, guardian of Sarah Graves my Daughter under age, Doe hereby constitute and make my wellbeloved friends Robert Wood of Harlowe in the County of Essex, shoomaker, and Nicholas Campe of Nasing in the said County, husbandman, my true and lawfull Attorneys joyntly and severally for me & in myne name and my said daughters name to demand and receive by suit of law if need be to recover of Lydia Ford late of Nasing aforesaid, widdow, my Sister, the summe of seaven pounds and tenne shillings, for six yeares rent of a certaine peice of meadow in Nasing aforesaid, to be ended the Twenty first day of March next ensuing the date hereof, being part of my said daughter’s legacy, according to the last will and Testament of Thomas Finch2 late of Hertford in the county of Hertford, yoeman, deceased. And acquittance or acquittances therefore in my name and my said Daughters name to make upon such receipt, and the same money received to return unto my wellbeloved freind Nicholas Parker of Boston in New England, Planter, whome I have appointed to receive the same... 1. John Graves was a friend of John Eliot the Apostle, coming as did Eliot, from the town of Nasing, in Essex, and living in Roxbury. He died in 1644.

2. This provision for one of the daughters of John Graves may account for the omission of her name in his will, made Nov. 1, 1644, by which his estate was left to his wife, mother, and children, except Sarah. Perhaps whe was the only surviving child by a second wife (daughter of Thomas Finch), who died shortly after his arrival in New England, or of Judith Alward, or Allard, his third wife.)

From The Town of Roxbury, Francis S. Drake, 1905, pp. 11, 49, 393: “In the year 1631 the ship Lyon, William Pierce, master, left the shores of England with the first batch of Nazing pilgrims on board. Eliot, the apostle, was there, with William Curtis and Sarah, his wife, Eliot’s sister and their children, in company with the wife of Governor Winthrop... Early in 1633, John Graves, with his wife and five children, left their home for the shores of New England... emigration from Old to New England ceased about 1640, when the popular cause there began to look hopeful.”

“West of Stony Brook and south of Heath Street, a district since included in the Lowell and Heath estates, originally contained the homesteads of Philip Eliot, James Astwood, Isaac Johnson, Robert Pepper, John Graves, Arthur Gary, John Perry, and William Heath.”

QUESTIONS AND INFORMATION

MISCELLANEOUS GRAVES FAMILIES Mr. Robert A. McCully, 314 Deertrail Lane,

Mill Valley, CA 94941, has sent information on JOHN TRUMAN GRAVES and his descendants. He was a son of John Truman Graves and Mary Edley, was born about 1806 in St. Mary’s Co., MD, and died 23 Feb. 1860 in St. Mary’s Co., MD. He married Mary Ann Wathen, daughter of James Hanson Wathen and Mary Ann Lowe, on 8 Jan. 1833 in St. Mary’s Co. Mary Ann was born 5 May 1810 in St. Mary’s Co., and died 16 March 1866 in St. Clements, St. Mary’s Co., MD.

Bob McCully is very interested in information on the ancestors and descendants

of Mary Ann Wathen, and also about the ancestry of John Truman Graves.

(ED. NOTE: The Graves descent is from JOHN GRAVES of St. Mary’s Co., MD, as follows: John1 Greaves, Thomas2 Greaves, John Baptist3 Graves, John Truman4 Graves m. Ann Edley, John Truman5 Graves m. Mary Ann Wathen.)

NORTHERN GRAVES FAMILIES

Mrs. Kaaren A. Matthews, Box 1863, Cardston, Alberta T0K 0K0, Canada, descended from JOSEPH GRAVES and Rachel Pratt of Framingham, MA, is still searching for the ancestry of Joseph Graves.

She has sent information on the ancestry of Rachel Pratt, as shown on the ancestor chart on the next page.

Joseph Graves was born about 1699 in MA. He married Rachel Pratt on 3 May 1722 (or 1723). Their children, all born in Framingham, MA, were: • Joseph Graves, b. 21 Jan. 1722/3. (An

LDS record shows that Joseph m(1) Mary Newton, 19 Feb. 1744, m(2) Lydia Newton, 10 Aug. 1758. However, that appears to be wrong, since that Joseph was b. 3 Feb. 1777 in Lynn, MA, and was #99 in the Samuel Graves of Lynn book.)

• Hannah Graves, b. 5 July 1725, d. 2 March 1738/9.

• Rachel Graves, b. 23 July 1727, m. Thomas Eames, Jr., 21 Sept. 1748.

• William Graves, b. 22 Jan. 1729, m. Mary Gay, 8 Dec. 1763, d. 1 April 1801.

• Benjamin Graves, b. 22 Jan. 1729. Twin of William.

• Phineas Graves, b. 8 Feb. 1735, m(1) ------ Pepper, m(2) Elizabeth Banks. (ancestors of Mrs. Matthews)

• Bathsheba Graves, b. 20 June 1737, m. Phineas Butler, 29 April 1755.

• Timothy Graves, b. 20 Oct. 1739. • John Graves, b. 31 March 1742, m.

Susannah Hill, 3 May 1764. • Ebenezer Graves, b. 27 Oct. 1746.

(ED. NOTE: As has been mentioned previously, it is believed that descendants of this family include the families of Lt. William Graves of MA, Nova Scotia & New Brunswick, Canada (238), and Joseph Graves of CT, New Brunswick & Nova Scotia, Canada (282).

It seems possible that Joseph Graves (b. 1699) was descended from Rear Adm. Thomas Graves of Charlestown, MA. The sons of Thomas1 were John, William, Thomas, b.c. 1638, Nathaniel, bapt. 1639, and Joseph, b. 1645. It is believed that John stayed in England and William died young. Thomas2 had only one son who lived, Thomas3, b. 1683, who would not have been old enough to have had Joseph (b. 1699). Nathaniel2 had only one

son who lived, Nathaniel3, b. 1678, but it is not known whether he married and had children. Joseph2 had several sons who could have been the father of Joseph (b. 1699). All the children of Joseph2 were born in Sudbury, MA, which is next to Framingham (as can be seen on the present-day map below), and it would have been reasonable for a grandson of Joseph to be given his name. None of the known grandsons of Joseph2 are named Joseph.

In summary, if Joseph (b. 1699) was descended from Rear Adm. Thomas Graves, he was probably a grandson of Joseph2 Graves of Sudbury. Help is needed on this. It would be helpful to check wills, probate records, and land records for connections.)

Mrs. Barbara A. Lincoln-Miller, 1121 Maple Ave., Galesburg, IL 61401, needs the parents of HANNAH GRAVES, born 26 Feb. 1773, probably in CT, and died 24 July 1851 near Knoxville, Knox Co., IL. Her burial place and gravestone has never been found, and she has not been located on any 1850 census.

She married Dan Randall Hovey, son of Daniel Hovey and Keziah ------, on 2 July 1795. Where did they marry? He was born 17 Feb. 1774 in Mansfield, Windham Co., CT, and died 15 June 1826 in NY or OH. Dan had a brother, Ezra, buried in 1843 in Jefferson Co., NY. Dan and Hannah lived in Ontario

Co., NY, near Sodus, in 1800-1810, and were in the census records for those years.

Their children were: Philena, b. 1796; Lucinda, b. 1798; Rozenia, b. 1800; Marinda Keziah, b. 1801, m. George Saunders; Pamela M., b. 1805; Sophia P., b. 1808; Eliza D., b. 1810; Lucretia J., b. 1812; Marshall L.R., b. 1814, m. Elizabeth Fox.

Mrs. Joyce Bernard, 60 Hillcrest Ave.,

Manhasset, NY 11030-2316, is looking for more information on a Graves family of Maine. They lived at Leeds, Androscoggin Co., ME, about 15 miles north of Lewiston, ME. A summary of the family follows.

DESCENDANTS OF SAMUEL GRAVES AND REBECCA YOUNG OF MAINE

GENERATION 1 Samuel Graves (1) married Rebecca Young,

daughter of Joseph Young (born in England) and Rachel Moore (b. 1774, NJ, d. 8 Jan. 1851, Swanville, ME). Rebecca was born in Digby, Nova Scotia. She had a sister, Rachel A. Young, who was born 21 Aug. 1815 in Digby, Nova Scotia, died 30 March 1907 in Belfast, ME, and married James Young McClintock on 7 Aug. 1837 in Digby, NS.

Samuel and Rebecca apparently lived in Leeds, Androscoggin Co., ME, since all 4 of their children were born there.

There is a discrepancy involving Samuel’s name. His death certificate shows his name as Joseph, but a certified letter from the town of Leeds and Maine State Archives both show it as Samuel.

Children - Graves 2. Lindley Graves, b. 21 Nov. 1823. 3. Rachel Graves, b. 24 May 1825. 4. Cynthia Ann Graves, b. 9 Aug. 1827. 5. Edward Young Graves, b. 12 April 1829,

m. Ann R. Terry, d. 13 June 1910.

GENERATION 2

She was born 20 Jan. 1836 in Montville, ME, died 22 March 1923 in Boston, MA, and was buried in Milton, MA.

Children - Graves 6. Edward Milton Graves, b. 15 Nov. 1855

(Montville, ME), m. Agnes E. ------. He was city auditor of Fitchburg, MA, and was living there in 1925 and 1928.

7. Eugene Walter Graves, b. 3 Sept. 1857 (East Boston, MA), m. Caroline E. Hird, d. 13 or 14 Nov. 1945 (Boothbay Harbor, ME). Bur. 16 Nov. 1945, Oaklawn Cem., Boothbay Harbor, ME. They lived in Southport, ME. She was b. 17 March 1863 in Aroroatin, Scotland, and d. 14 Dec. 1944 in Boothbay Harbor, ME, daughter of George Hind (b. Scotland) and Matilda Young (b. England).

8. Frank Arthur Graves, b. 1859, m. Annie Wainright Snow, 5 June 1900, d. 30 July 1915.

9. Hattie Florence Graves, b. 1863 (South Boston, MA), never married, d. 4 July 1933 (Arlington, MA). Bur. Milton, MA.

GENERATION 3

Frank Arthur Graves (8) was born in 1859, died 30 July 1915 in South Orrington, ME, and was buried in Milton, MA. He married Annie Wainright (or Wainwright) Snow on 5 June 1900. She was born 20 March 1867 in Boston, MA, died 20 March 1918 in Milton, MA, and was buried in Milton.

Children - Graves 10. Marie Carleton (or Carlton) Graves, b. 12

June 1902 (Milton?, MA), d. 16 June 1902 (Milton, MA). Bur. Milton, MA.

11. Florence Wainright Graves, b. 16 May 1904 (Milton, MA), m. Alexis John Strong, 3 July 1938 (Shelbourne, MA), d. 3 April 1991 (Morro Bay, CA). Bur. Santa Monica, CA. No children. Alexis was b. in Libau, Russia.

SAMUEL GRAVES OF LYNN, MA

Ms. Joan Bradshaw, 10310 Kings Grant, San Antonio, TX 78230, wrote: “I would like to connect with individuals who have information about the Graves descendants from Marblehead, MA. I am the granddaughter of Carrie Orne Graves (1864-1948), daughter of JOSEPH GRAVES II (1828-?) and Sarah A. Orne (1827-?). Carrie had four sisters and two brothers: Margaret, Sarah, Lissie, Mary, Joseph and William. I would like to find out more about this line.

(ED. NOTE: Carrie O. Graves is descended from SAMUEL GRAVES of Lynn, MA, and is listed as #2228 on p. 194 of that book.)

Mr. Benjamin F. Dake, III, 1267 Manzanita

Way, N.E., Keizer, OR 97303-3546, is descended from Capt. THOMAS GRAVES of VA. He wrote: “In reviewing one of my New England ancestries, I have noted that my grandfather (?) John2 Choate, born 15 June 1661 in Chebacco, Ipswich, MA, had as his first wife, Elizabeth Graves, daughter of Samuel and Joanna Graves. Elizabeth was born 29 June 1667 in Ipswich. They were married 7 July 1684. Elizabeth died before 19 May 1690, when John remarried.

John’s daughter Anne3, who married 29 Nov. 1706, is stated in several genealogies to have been the daughter of the second wife, but a child of this second marriage was born 27 April 1691, leaving hardly an opportunity for Anne to have been an earlier child of this marriage, yet all the genealogies claim her mother to be the second wife. In fact, she is alleged in at least one to have been born in 1690. Since one of my first questions in genealogy is “does the math add up,” I question the circumstances of a birth immediately after marriage, then that girl marrying at 16, or a later birth and the child marrying at 14, to a man born about 1679-1680. Then she had only one child born 17 Jan. 1708. Her death is not known, but she was deceased by 1734.

John2 Choate shows as father of only one child by Elizabeth Graves, John3, born 28 May 1685, who was deaf and dumb and died young.

So my question, do your records show this Elizabeth’s death date? I think it makes more sense that my Anne was actually daughter of Elizabeth, but don’t really know where to start. The thumbnail sketch on her from the Choate genealogy is:

“Elizabeth Graves, who became Mr. Choate’s first wife, was the youngest of four children. Samuel was born Aug. 5, 1658, and died Nov. 22, 1679; John was born Aug. 1, 1660, and her only sister, Hannah, was born Dec. 19, 1663. Samuel Graves, her father was born in 1624.” Torrey indicates that the wife of Samuel

Graves was Grace Beamsley. Savage didn’t know when the second marriage took place and doesn’t have Anne at all.”

(ED. NOTE: Samuel2 Graves who married Grace Beamsley was the third son of immigrant Samuel1 Graves of Lynn, MA. Elizabeth3 Graves (listed as #29 in the book) was his fourth child, but not the youngest. He had a total of 7 children.

The parents of Elizabeth were correctly stated above as Samuel Graves and Grace Beamsley, not Samuel and Joanna as incorrectly stated in the first paragraph. Samuel2 Graves did have a son Samuel3 who married Joanna Pearce.

I do not know when Elizabeth3 (Graves) Choate died. Can anyone help with this, and with evidence of whether Anne Choate was by Elizabeth?)

Rebecca Houk, (8) Patricia Ann Graves, b. 15 Oct. 1939, Greensboro, NC, m. Von Reagan.

She is looking for information on the wife and German background of John Graves/Graff, the immigrant.

(ED. NOTE: Note that she has at least 3 lines of descent from John Graves. In addition to the marriage of cousins in generation 3, Sophia Graves in gen. 4 was a dau. of Daniel3 Graves, who was a son of Boston2 Graves and Sarah Efland.

John1 Graves is believed to have been born about 1703 in the German Palatinate.

Although the date of his arrival in America is uncertain, it was probably 1730. According to Roy Stockwell (author of John Graves and His Descendants, 1954), the following record is from Pennsylvania Colonial Records, vol. 3, p. 386: “At the courthouse in Philadelphia, Sept. 5, 1730, a list was presented of the names of forty-six Palatines who, with their families making in all 130 persons, were imported here in the ship Alexander and Ann, William Clymer, master, from Rotterdam, but last in Deal.” In this list appears the name of

Johann Sebastian Graff. It is probable that this is the man whose name is recorded as John Graff, the father of Jacob and Sebastian Graff, born in Berks Co., PA, in 1746 and 1747. The family name was not changed from Graff to Graves until the family moved to North Carolina.

The name of John’s wife is unknown. The list of arrivals contains nothing to indicate whether he was married or had children prior to his arrival in America.

According to The Story of the Palatinates, by Sanford H. Cobb, the Palatinate, as a political entity, maintained a varying importance from the 13th century to the close of the 18th. It was finally shattered by the Napoleonic wars. Situated between the greater and rival powers of France and the German princes, its soil was the frequent path of armies and a field of battle. The French were the major problem.

There were, in fact, two Palatinates -- the Upper, or Bavarian, Palatinate, and the Lower, or Palatinate of the Rhine (or the Pfalz). The latter was by far the more important. Its boundaries may be vaguely stated as the states of Mainz, Treves, Lorraine, Alsace, Baden, and Wurtemberg. Its lands lay on both sides of the Rhine, extending from near Cologne above Mannheim and containing almost 3500 square miles. Its capital was Heidelberg and its principal cities were Mayence, Spires, Mannheim, and Worms.

It is not know where in the Palatinate was the original home of John Graves.)

Dr. William Hughes Graves, III, 106

Tanglewood Dr., Starkville, MS 39759, wrote that his great-grandfather, WILLIAM M. GRAVES, was born in 1858 in Winchester, Franklin Co., TN. His death certificate states that his father was born in England and his mother in Ohio.

The descent is: (1) William M. Graves, b. 12 Aug. 1858, d. 7 Sept. 1933, Columbia, TN, m(1) Ella Sarah Tucker, m(2) Fannie B. -----, (2) William Hughes Graves, b. 1 Aug. 1882, Nashville, TN, d. 5 Sept. 1944, Durham, NC, m. Mary Ellen Trumble, (3) William Hughes Graves, Jr., b. 28 May 1916, Junction City, KS, d. 6 June 1967, Winnsboro, SC, m.

Claudia Pressley Crawford, (4) William Hughes Graves, III, b. 3 Sept. 1942, Sumter, SC, m. Elizabeth Ann Nybakken.

(ED. NOTE: The first thing that should be checked is the 1860 census for TN to find a Graves family with William as a child. Then the 1850 and 1870 censuses could be checked to learn more about the family.

William M. Graves may be descended from WILLIAM GRAVES of Abbeville Co., SC and Franklin Co., TN, b. 1750, d. 1805 or 1808 in Franklin Co., TN. That William had sons Jacob, John R., possibly Joseph, and 3 others.)

Ms. Virginia Warbington, 2401 Engleford

Dr., Arlington, TX 76015-1220, is “trying to identify the parents of NANCY GRAVES (b. 1784 in GA, according to MS census) who married Moses Starnes in 1800.

Nancy and Moses settled in Amite Co., MS in 1801, moved to Marion Co., MS, and then on to Copiah Co., MS, where they lived out their lives. Their eldest son, Moses Dawson Starnes, was my g-g-grandfather.”

(ED. NOTE: This may be part of the family of James Graves and Mary Copeland of VA & GA. There were several marriages with the Starnes family in this Graves family. John Graves, b. 1793, a probable grandson of James and Mary, had a daughter, Amanda E. Graves, b.c. 1822, MS, who m(2) Dr. William A. Starnes.)

Ms. Gerri Clevidence, 3305 Acorn Lane,

Jeffersonville, IN 47130, is descended from JOSEPH GRAVES (b.c. 1808-1810, VA or MD) and Caroline Carpenter. She would appreciate more information on this family.

According to family tradition, Joseph Graves was of Cherokee blood. He moved to KY between 1820 and 1830, around the time the Cherokees were rounded up and sent to OK. “Of course, there may be no connection whatsoever. But I do know that my grandmother was disowned by her family,

both sides, for marrying Joseph’s grandson, Samuel Tilton Graves. The reason given was that he was ‘not a suitable match.’ My grandmother said it was because of the ‘Indian blood’, which she said was Cherokee.”

Dorothy Schelling. Mr. John G. Graves, 719 Cockeysmill Rd.,

Reisterstown, MD 21136, would like help in locating records of his Graves ancestors and their earlier ancestry. He is descended from RICHARD T. GRAVES and Nancy Watkins of VA.

The information he has is mostly from death records, the 1850 U.S. census, and marriage and birth records of their children. He has also checked the compiled records for King and Queen Co., published by the Genealogical Publishing Co. of Baltimore, and has found them very incomplete and not helpful.

An incomplete genealogy of this family (entirely from information provided by Mr. Graves) follows.
