The Graphics Fairy’s
Envelope & Pocket Templates Bundle
Helpful Folding Instructions and Design Considerations
About This Document. We put this document together to help you understand how to use the pocket
and envelope templates in The Graphics Fairy Membership Site’s Envelope & Pocket Templates Bundle.
We have noted helpful tips, folding instructions, and design considerations to help you make the most of
this kit.
General Notes. A few notes about envelopes and pockets…
Envelope templates are what we consider a single-sided template. This means they fold in such a way
that all of the outer surfaces of the finished envelope stay on the outside. In short, you only need to
design one side of the template.
Most folded pocket templates are different. When the pocket is folded, you will see elements of both
the front side (designed side), and back side (paper color) of your template. If you want all surfaces of a
finished pocket to have images on them, you will need to design (or print out) a second version that is a
mirror image of the first side, and then paste the two sides of the template together before folding. In
this image set, we have included a and b side versions for pocket templates #2 and #3 to help you with
this.
Securing Pockets & Envelopes. There many ways to secure pockets and envelopes. You will definitely
want to have a glue stick handy to secure the bottom and side tabs. You may also want to try stickers,
washi tape, and adhesive dots as a way to close sides.
Folding & Printing. The type of paper you use for these templates is up to you and your project’s needs.
Most people are happy printing their work out on a light cardstock (65 pound). Unlike standard printer
paper, this weight gives the pocket or envelope more substance and can stand up better to usage. Light
cardstock is readily available at craft stores and is fairly inexpensive.
If you are gluing two sides together to create a two-sided template (most commonly for pockets), you
can print the two versions (one right-side version, one mirror image) and join two layers of light
cardstock with a glue stick. Printer paper works, just be careful not to use too much glue when you join
the two pages and smooth out any air bubbles before the glue sets.
If you do a lot of work with envelopes & pockets, you may want to create a heavier template. Print out
the template on printer paper, trace the template on to heavy cardstock (file folders work great too),
and cut out. Now you have a template you can trace on to any scrapbook paper you want!
It is helpful to have a bone folder (or use the edge of an old credit card) when folding heavier stock
papers. Bone folders will help you get crisp folds and edges.
Sizing. All of the templates in this bundle will fit on a single sheet of 8 ½” x 10” paper. The size of the
template is included in the file name to help you. You can always enlarge or decrease the size of the
templates in a graphics editing program if you need another size.

Folding: Fold the bottom section up. Secure the two side tabs either to the outside or on the inside of
the large back side.
Design: To ensure the bottom portion of your design appears right-side up when folded, design the
bottom section of the template upside down. See note below about two-sided designs.
Note: When folded, this pocket will show some of the back of the paper. For a two-sided design (as
shown above), you will need to design two versions, one for the front and one for the back of the paper.
Since this template is symmetrical, you can also simply print two copies of the same template design,
cut them out, and glue them together before folding.

We have included the “a” and
“b” versions of this template, which can be used individually, or combined to make a two-sided design.
For a two-sided design (as shown above), you will need to design the “a” and “b” versions, one for the
front and one for the back of the paper. Print out the coordinating “a” and “b” files. Cut the images out
and glue the sides together before folding.

Folding: Fold the triangular side across the back side. Secure the bottom tab either to the outside or on
the inside of the large back side.
Design: See note below about two-sided designs.

Folding: Fold the bottom section up. To close the left and right sides, glue the side edges (only glue
approximately ½” in from the sides) to the back of the pocket. Fold the top section down.
Design: To ensure the top and bottom portions of your design appears right-side up when folded,
design the top and bottom sections of the template upside down.
Note: Print out the gift card holder. Cut the image out and follow the gluing & folding instructions
above.

Folding: Fold all three tabs inward. Secure tabs to journal page / project with glue.
Design: There are no specific design considerations for this template.
Note: When folded, this pocket will not have its own backing. It is meant to attach to another page or
paper to form the back of the pocket. Print out the template. Cut the image out and follow the folding
& gluing instructions above. The folded front and back of the pocket template is shown above.

Note: We are discussing template #6 and #7 together as there is only a size difference

Folding: Fold the left side back behind the notched side. Secure the bottom and right side tabs either to
the outside or on the inside of the back side.
Design: The main portion of your design should be centered on the notched side of the pocket.
Note: Print out the template. Cut the image out and follow the folding & gluing instructions above. The
folded front and back of the pocket template is shown above.

Note: We are discussing template #8 and #9 together as the only difference is a small window.

Folding: Fold the left side back behind the right side. Secure the bottom and side tabs on the inside of
the back side.
Design: The main portion of your design should be centered on the right rectangular side of the pocket.
Note: Print out the template. Cut the image out and follow the folding & gluing instructions above. The
folded front and back of the windowed pocket template is shown above (tabs adhered to the inside of
the pocket).

Folding: Fold the left and right side tabs inward (glue tabs to one another if desired). Fold the smaller,
bottom tab up and secure. Fold the larger, top tab down.
Design: The main portion of your design should be centered on the main rectangular area of the
envelope. For a horizontal design, rotate the template 90 degrees in your graphics editing program.
Note: Print out the template. Cut the image out and follow the folding & gluing instructions above.

Note: We are discussing template #11 and #12 together as the only difference is envelope shape.

Folding: Fold the side tabs inward. Fold the large bottom section upward. Glue the side tabs to the
bottom tab where they meet. Fold the top tab down.
Design: The main portion of your design should be centered on the main square / rectangular area of
the envelope. If you want the bottom or top tabs to have design focal points, make sure the images you
use are upside down (or vertically flipped), so they appear right-side up when folded.
Note: Print out the template. Cut the image out and follow the folding & gluing instructions above.

Folding: This is our most challenging fold. You may want to print a second copy to practice with first.
First, fold the bottom section up; fold on each of the dotted lines, accordion style.
Fold the sides inward; fold on each of the dotted lines accordion style. Score / fold the triangular area on
the sides inward to the center fold (this will allow the bottom accordion fold to nest nicely in this area
later). Glue the bottom section to the side sections only where the two sections meet.
Work the bottom of the envelope so the center fold is going inward. Work the sides so their center folds
are also going inward. Work the bottom triangular fold so it follows the edges of the bottom accordion
fold.
To close the top of the envelope, fold the top section down; fold on each of the dotted lines, accordion
style.
Design: The main portion of your design should be centered on the main square / rectangular area of
the envelope. If you want the bottom or top tabs to have design focal points, make sure the images you
use are upside down (or vertically flipped), so they appear right-side up when folded. Avoid designing in
the dotted line areas, as these areas will be mostly hidden when the envelope is assembled.
Note: Print out the template. Cut the image out and follow the folding & gluing instructions above.
