LUNCH BUNCH will be Tuesday, June 7th at 12:30 at the new Gennaro’s restaurant, on Com-mon Street (Johnny Carino’s building). Sign-up sheet in the Narthex.

Both Men of the Church ac-

tivities, Devotional Break-

fast and Fellowship Dinner,

will take a break for the

summer. We will resume in

APNC UPDATE:

Praise God! The search committee for

an associate pastor for Christian Educa-

tion received 25 applications on the first

day our position was listed. Please pray

for the right person and for the

committee.

Let the Little Children Come…

As you have likely seen in the announcements,

Children’s Worship will take a break for the

summer. Beginning June 5, age-appropriate chil-

dren’s bulletins and crayons will be available in

the Narthex in addition to the busy bags. Par-

ents of young children are encouraged to help

their children engage in worship as much as

possible. Here are some tips to help you with

that:

Sit close to the front! You may be tempted

to sit in the back so that your children are

not a distractions to others. Be assured,

your church family enjoys the sight of

children during worship. They are not a

distraction. In fact, they are an added

blessing. In addition, the children will be

much more attentive and engaged if they

can see what’s going on.

Encourage your children who are begin-

ning to read to look for words they rec-

ognize in the bulletins or on the screen as

the songs and prayers are displayed.

Let them see you participating in wor-

ship. Children learn about worship by

observing us worship. So, sing, pray, lis-

ten…Share with your children what you

are doing!

Remember that your children are a bless-

ing to this congregation. We want to

see them, hear them and greet them.

They belong in worship too!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY: On

Sunday, May 15th a special offering was taken to cele-

brate Pentecost. Your gift of $705 will help the

church encourage, develop, and support its young

people, and also address the needs of at-risk chil-

dren. Mission Outreach has directed that forty per-

cent ($282) of the Pentecost offering be donated to

John Knox Ranch. The remaining 60% is used to

support ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agen-

cy. These include Youth Adult Volunteers, Ministries

for Youth, and Children-At-Risk.

NEW SOUND SYSTEM TO BE

INSTALLED IN THE

SANCTUARY:

In April, The Session approved the purchase

of a universal digital sound system for the

sanctuary. The benefits of the new system

go far beyond the Praise and Traditional

Services. It will greatly enhance the quality

of sound for weddings, funerals, and com-

munity functions. Installation will com-

mence in June after Vacation Bible School.

COMBINED WORSHIP SERVICE

JULY 3RD

The Session approved a combined Praise and

Traditional Service on July 3rd (July 4th week-

end) at 10 AM. There will be no Sunday School

that day. Plans are being made to do the same

on Labor Day weekend (September 4th). Wor-

ship Committee recommended to take ad-

vantage of holiday weekends for joint worship

services so the congregation can have the op-

portunity to worship as one body. There are

usually four combined services per year. Put

these dates on your calendar.

BRENT FERGUSON TO BE LEAVING NBPC: Brent Ferguson, our Praise

Team Leader, will be leaving in June to pursue his music PhD. at the University

of Kansas. Brent came to us in October 2014. Through his leadership the Praise

Team has grown in both quantity and quality. One only had to witness the great

performance by the team at the Pentecost Sunday worship service to attest to that

fact. Brent has also been instrumental in directing the children’s choir and youth

ensemble. It goes without saying that he will be greatly missed.

The Praise Team will not be without a leader. Daniel Wyman has agreed to take

on this responsibility as well as his current job as organist. Our best goes with

Brent and his wife T.J. as they move on to this next phase of life, and to Daniel as

he assumes his new position

NBPC NEW LOGO!- Here’s a sneak peek at

NBPC’s new logo that we will officially start

using on June 1st. We will incorporate it into

the July newsletter but you will start seeing it

before then on the church bulletin and other

places. Thank you to the Communications

Committee and to the Session for their invalua-

ble input, feedback, and discussions!

Thank You for Helping Us Pick Up Trash!

NBPC was once again represented well dur-ing our quarterly Adopt-A-Highway trash pickup on the two-mile stretch of Loop 337 near the intersection with Highway 46. A huge thank you goes out to the volunteers, like Cameron Gibson, Luke Bryant, and Eli Lowe (pictured here), who did terrific job in a short amount of time! Mark your calen-dars for the next trash pickup on Saturday, August 13th. We will start earlier, at 7 am in the NBHS parking lot. Hope to see you

Presbyterian Women Birthday Luncheon

The annual Presbyterian Women Birthday Party luncheon

on May 14th was a rousing success with fabulous fellow-

ship, a generous offering, recognition of an outstanding

PW Coordinating Team member, and a winsome presen-

tation by our talented organist.

The Birthday Offering will be distributed to three national

agencies and one in Sudan in keeping with the 94 year old

PW tradition of caring for others. Our contribution of

$645 will help “justice roll down like waters, and right-

eousness like an ever-flowing stream.” (Amos 5:24.)

Thank you to all for your support.

It was a delight to honor Ann Rider with the Honorary

Lifetime Membership in Presbyterian Women. Ann has

been a member of NBPC for 10 years, was a founding

member of the service oriented Dorcas Circle, and was in-

strumental in forming the prayer shawl ministry. She continues to pray over and cre-

ate beautiful handmade shawls to comfort people in need. Ann has been PW’s treas-

ure for 4 years and has agreed to continue for a 5th term.

After a lovely meal the program continued in the parlor with a presentation by Dan-

iel Wyman, our organist. Daniel presented two of his original compositions and

shared tales of his ministry in music. He began playing for church at the age of 14.

After studying Music at Texas State University, Daniel continues to play an array of

instruments in a variety of venues in and around San Antonio. He said he was

blessed to find NBPC’s ad for an organist on Facebook. (It has sure been a blessing

for us!) Daniel will take on the additional job title of Praise Team Leader when

Brent Ferguson heads to Kansas in June.

When “Pull Yourself Together” Doesn’t Work:

You’ve heard it time and time again: “Pull yourself together...Cheer up...Tough it out...It’s not

that bad.” Perhaps people have said it to you. Or perhaps you keep saying it to yourself. But it

hasn’t helped. You’re still hurting. Things are coming apart. Here’s the good news: You don’t have

to go through your struggles alone. Help is available. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers

who will walk with you, listen to you, and provide confidential, one-to-one care as you search

through the pieces and find what is truly in your heart. To learn more about what Stephen Minis-

try can do for you, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry leaders: Susan Bell (830.625.1102), Scott

Payne (830.625.6705), or Anne Felts (830.625.4803). Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for

you.

COMAL COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY APOSTLE BUILD:

Thank you to the wonderful group of volunteers from NBPC that came out on May 21

and participated in our annual Apostle Build with Comal County Habitat for Humani-

ty. NBPC donated $3,500, along with similar donations from about 10 other New Braun-

fels’ churches, to make the Apostle Build possible. It’s our fourth year to do so. This im-

portant mission in the life of the church makes a positive impact in the lives of others

now and for years to come. Join us next time!

NBPC’s participation in the Habitat for Hu-

manity’s Apostle Build was full of hard work,

laughs, and sharing God’s love for others. Our

volunteers worked on the roof of the home be-

ing built for the Dominguez family by about a

dozen churches in New Braunfels. Some of the

NBPC church members present for the photo

were (from left) Mr.

Dominguez, Dawn, JP,

and Hayden Kesselring, Zoe Jacobie, Bob Presley, Pastor Scott

Nowack, Hollis Jacobie, Sam Stewart, Charlie Felts, Courtney

Cowden, and Elton Reneau. Other volunteers not pictured were Ste-

ve and Mitch Beito, James Lowe, Duane Knudson, and Carolyn

Reed.

Our youth were very involved and much appreciated during this

year’s Apostle Build with Habitat for Humanity. Mitch Beito, left,

hands roof decking to Hayden Kesselring in this photo.

Dear Friends, My Nana passed away four years ago on May 12th. She was 96 years old. I learned a lot of

things from her over the course of my life. One of those gifts she and my Pop-Pop gave me was the

chance to learn how to play golf. They had retired, sold the family business and moved to a 55+

adult golf community. Here they learned how to play golf for the first time and they loved it.

Whenever my brother and I visited them in the warm weather months, they would take us to the

driving range and teach us how to hit a golf ball. I loved it and enjoyed learning how to do it. I

would watch both my Nana and Pop-Pop hit the ball and I would attempt to imitate their stroke.

Starting at age 8, I slowly learned how to swing a club properly off the tee and on the putting green.

It is a gift that I have kept and maintained ever since, hoping to pass it along to my children.

In the language of the Old World, my grandparents had apprenticed me. I started on the

driving range with an old set of junior-sized clubs learning how to hold the club, then how to make

contact with the ball. When I was older, I learned how to putt on the practice green and learned

some of the etiquette of the game. It took me a long time to learn to swing properly and putt accu-

rately (and I still am learning). When I was 14 years old, I was ready to play my first hole of golf. I

had done more than just learn how to play the game of golf. I had become a golfer. And I have no

idea how to teach someone how to swing a club or putt a ball, any more than I would know how to

teach someone to breathe. For me, golf is an integral part of who I am.

Religion is often shared in the same way. Inheriting faith means following your parents and

learning the practices that make up a spiritual way of life. I learned to be a golfer as a child. At the

same time I had learned to be a Presbyterian. I did so by watching my parents and participating in

the community. I grew up in the Sunday School rooms, the sanctuary, the playground, and in the

church kitchen. Over time, I learned how to be a Christian. I learned how to read the Bible, listen

to sermons, sing, and help those in need. Our faith was inherited, but it was also formed and creat-

ed by joining together the skills of the community.

So why is church attendance declining, especially among youth and young adults? Did you

know that 45% of Americans have opted out of family faith? Almost half have chosen a way differ-

ent from the one (their) parents gave (them). Why the change? Why the switch? We were taught

the how, but we were not all taught the what and the why. The what asks: what is so compel-

ling about our faith tradition? The why asks: why should I devote my life to this faith tradition?

Have we ever offered to the younger generations what is significant about being a Christian

and a Presbyterian or asked why you should be one? I often hear the comment, “Why don’t the

young people come to church?” Can we give them plausible reasons about why we do what we do

besides saying, “That’s how we’ve always done it.”? Can we offer all generations a new way of faith

where the how of religion follows the what and the why of spiritual practice? Choice, meaning,

and practice intertwine and will open us up to the resolute ways of living as Christ’s disciples in the

world. In Christ,

Pastor Scott Nowack

Mission & Outreach Activities and News

A big shout out to all of the church members who participated in the 24th Annual

“Stamp Out Hunger” Letter Carriers’ Food Drive on May 14th and put non-perishable

food at their mailboxes. All local donations were given to the SOS Food Bank, a local

organization our church supports in various ways.

The Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation has created a new community out-

reach program to provide lawn maintenance each month for the aging adults in our

area. They would love your help! Contact Jana Evans at the Comal County Senior

Center at 830.629.4547 if you are interested.

Thank you once again for the incredible financial support from our NBPC congrega-

tion in the 2nd Annual Family Promise Bed Race. Your donations totaled $2,641, mak-

ing NBPC the entry raising the most money for the second year in a row. As you

know, our race team, the Wave Riders, also won two awards on race day—People’s

Choice and Best Theme. The “most money raised” trophy was presented to the NBPC

team by Family Promise Board members on May 15th.

Pictured are (from left) team members

Session Highlights From May- The following are highlights from the May 10 meeting of the Session:

Prior to the business meeting, Session heard Statements of Faith from the six confirmands — Troy Petmecky, Bailey Grace

Snyder, Hayden Kesselring, Megan Carr, Jack Snyder, and Eleanor Hardwick — and moved and approved their member-

ship into the church.

Treasurer Rosanne Stockhorst reported that for the month of April expenses exceeded offerings by $5,156. Year-to-date defi-

cit is $10,538. Pastor Scott Nowack is working on stewardship update letters to be sent to church members in the next few

weeks, especially as it relates to financially supporting a new Associate Pastor.

The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee updated Session on its progress. Together the group reviewed a draft of the

Ministerial Information Form (MIF) that will be submitted to the Presbytery for approval and advertising. Session also dis-

cussed the effective salary and decided on $45,000 plus benefits.

Julia George, Session Clerk, informed Session that Valin Miller submitted a letter asking that her name be removed from the

rolls. During new business, Jerri Petmecky was approved to serve as a commissioner during the June 3-4 Presbytery meeting

at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin.

The Christian Education Committee, led by Sharon Jebens, said that 23 children have registered for Vacation Bible School at

this point. Graduating high school seniors will be honored during the June 5 service. They are Alan Carr, Brandon Kessel-

ring, and Tristan Clark. She reminded Session that beginning in June the children will remain in the sanctuary and will be

given “children bulletins” to occupy them during the worship service. The Communications Committee, chaired by Kari Hutchison, asked that the Session review the new NBPC logo developed

and recommended by the committee. It includes a new slogan/tagline ,“A Light in the City,” and is a representation of the

stained glass window cross with rays in the sanctuary. The Session approved the logo with a slight modification.

Jody Cosson, chair of the Congregational Care Committee, reported that 11 college students received congratulatory cards

from NBPC. Elders on the committee are now prepared to give communion to shut-in members.

The Facilities Committee, led by Joyce Taylor, announced that the security card reader system at the KDO door is complete.

The voice intercom at the back door is in the process of being installed. The committee voted to donate the memorial mon-

ey from David Altenhoff to KDO for playground upgrades.

Austin Talley reported that the Fellowship Committee’s next Family Fun Fellowship is May 25. The theme is Burgers,

Beans, and Boccie Bash. Dinner begins at 5:30 pm and activities at 6:15 pm. There were 64 people who attended the April

fellowship dinner and 16 of them were children.

Laura Smith, liaison with Kids Day Out, reported that the Golf Tournament benefitting KDO netted just over $11,000. The

last day of school is May 18.

The Membership Committee, led by Ann Brunn, continues to work on the new membership pictorial directory. Postcards

have been printed to send to visitors to the church. One baptism was conducted on May 8 when Elizabeth Diane Pullin,

daughter of Scott and Ashley Pullin, was baptized. Jerri Petmecky reported on the Mission & Outreach Committee’s actions and activities. They are reported elsewhere in this

newsletter and include committee action to designate 40 percent of the Pentecost offering to John Knox Ranch for summer

camp scholarships.

During the Personnel Committee report, Michael Meek reported that pastor evaluation forms distributed to Session mem-

bers should be completed by now. Other NBPC personnel evaluations will begin in September.

Courtney Cowden, chair of the Stewardship Committee, reported that Ronnie Scheel’s estate donated about $34,000 to the

church and it has been deposited in the memorial fund. Laura Sears has agreed to serve as the acting chair of the committee

once Courtney leaves in June. David Wright, on behalf of the Worship Committee, asked for approval of joint worship services on July 3 and September 4

starting at 10 am. Approval was granted. Installation of the new sound system in the sanctuary will begin after Vacation Bi-

ble School in mid-June. Century Music Systems revised its quote to reflect a $500 discount. New total for the system is

$16,895. As reported in last month’s newsletter, a dedicated memorial fund for equipment and the general memorial fund are

being used for this expense.
