Welcome toT.U.S.C.!

The Grade 5 TUSC program addresses all six types of language arts learning which include: reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and representing. Although we focus on all areas, our emphasis is on speaking and listening skills.

Every person is required to communicate in public in some way at some point in his/her life. A good public speaker is not born. The only way to learn how to speak confidently is to learn the techniques, observe other speakers and practice, practice, practice!

The grade 5 T.U.S.C. (The Ultimate Speaking Club) is a wonderful opportunity to observe, plan and practice. The objectives are not just to improve confidence and abilities, but to encourage good public speaking skills. Once a cycle on Day , we will hold a class TUSC meeting where the Chairperson calls on each classmate to present their assigned role for the meeting.

Your child's T.U.S.C. duotang contains a detailed description of each role. The date of the first meeting is . Your child's duty for the first meeting is . It is very important that she/he be prepared for each meeting. Unprepared students will receive a mark of zero. In case of absenteeism, students will be required to present their two roles at the following meeting.

If you have internet access at home, please feel free to prepare for your speech at home or you may use the computer in the electronic library during lunch break or after school.

Past experiences with this program have shown incredibly positive results and progress. Please talk to your child as the program progresses over the next few months. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Please sign, indicating that you have seen the T.U.S.C. duotang and that you and your child have discussed the responsibility involved in T.U.S.C..

Meet Your Basic Needs You've been chosen as the deliverer of basic needs. Remember the basic needs are fun, power, freedom, and belonging. These are the basic needs that everyone requires, in order to live a happy life. Sometimes you'll feel more drawn to power, sometimes to fun, it's always changing! This category is all about options! Remember to keep this role to less than 2 minutes!!

Here is a list of some of the things you can do for this category:

• The Angry Chef. This category meets your belonging need. Sometimes food can make you feel better. There's nothing like a warm cup of tea when you're down or a hot bowl of soup when you're cold. In this category you will prepare something for the class to taste. Remember to make it a healthy snack! You will share the recipe and explain how you made it.

• Skittles. This category will meet your need for fun. Skittles draws on your ability to mimic. A mimic is someone who can act like someone or something else. Your skills as a speaker will be sharper when you can observe and copy other people! Your job in this category is to act out a scene from a movie or TV show. Try to make it one that we've seen before, the rest of the TUSC members will have to guess it! Your movie must be rated at a level appropriate for grade 5.

• The Artiste! This category is where you can meet your freedom need. Often times artists (including painters, musicians, and dancers just to name a few) find great freedom in their art form. Paint or draw a picture you are proud of, sing or play a song, dance or do something artistic we've never seen!

• Trebek! This category is perfect for that person trying to meet their need for power. There is no greater power that being the holder of great knowledge and Alex Trebek (host of Jeopardy) embodies that power. Your task in this option is to develop some trivia questions on any topic of your choosing. Try to come up with 3 trivia questions to stump the class. Be creative in this category. You can assign point values to your questions!

The coming attraction could be a concert, sporting event, school celebration or activity within the community. Be sure to include the 5 W's of reporting (who, what, where, when, why/how)! Try to think of an interesting opening sentence to capture your audience.

Internet Pick This person is responsible for recommending an Internet site appropriate for grade 5. You must share the website address on the whiteboard and give us details about what you can find on the site. Please use this sheet to help guide you through your presentation.

Optional: You may videotape your commercial at home and play it to the class

Impromptu Speech An impromptu speech is one that is performed without rehearsal or preparation. The speaker relies on personal knowledge and experience. You will draw randomly a strip of paper that has a topic written on it. Though your speech is not formally prepared, you must still try to organize your thoughts so that your speech has an introduction, body and conclusion.

Although you can't fully prepare for this speech, you should practice at home by asking family members or friends to give you "practice" topics to speak about. Some examples may include: Why soccer is better than hockey. What my favourite zoo animal is and why. Why we should get paid to go to school.

Birthday of the Day The person reporting on a birthday may go to www.famousbirthdays.com or find the information in the Winnipeg Free Press and report on one famous person who has a birthday on the date of the meeting. Give a mini-biography of that person as well as their current age or calculate how old they were when they died.

Feelings: What do you feel when you look at this image? What might the people in the image feel?
